#61- It’s Okay to Be Second: Finding Your Place Outside the Arena with Tawny Fye
Episode 61
Show notes
Not everybody’s meant to go down the fence. Some of us are meant to bring the pickup.
This week I’m joined by one of my dearest friends, Tawny Fye: business partner, best friend, and self-proclaimed “Swiss Army knife of life” at Setting Sun Ranch in Stratton, Colorado. If you heard Naomi Bancroft’s episode, this is the other side of that story. It’s the side about the person hustling outside the arena to make the dream happen.
Tawny started out at the Colorado cow horse shows as “free entertainment.” Then she got tired of watching the show stall because nobody was at the gate, so she grabbed a rule book and started checking bits. For free. For about two years. That one decision turned into scribing major events, landing on the management team for majors, and eventually becoming CRCA president and show manager.
We get into:
• The two-broke-kids-with-a-dream way of building a performance horse business (the horses ate good, the girls ate ramen)
• Roofing houses, paving roads, and driving truck to keep one horse going down the road
• Why the 20 feet after the out gate is a free pass, and why you should “get interested in the dirt”
• What it’s actually like to scribe a big NRCHA final when you can’t hear the judge
• The real career paths behind a horse show: scribing, gate, show management, and show secretary
• Being honest about fear, and owning what you can and can’t do
• Never once saying “I told you so” in 15 years of business
• Why it’s okay to be the supporter instead of the spotlightPlus deer, sharks, Joe Dirt, and a very important PSA about cars. Honestly, we didn’t follow a single one of my questions, and it’s one of my favorite conversations yet.
If you’re the glue, the barn spouse, the best friend, or the one making the phone calls nobody else wants to make, this one’s for you.

#60- One Little "What If" | Jennifer Case on Stubbornness, Frozen Semen & Building the Regional Stallion Access Program
Episode 60
Show notes
What happens when a self-proclaimed glorified colt starter with a breeding obsession and a serious stubborn streak hears one little "what if"?
This week, Crystal sits down with Jennifer Case of Dry Creek Quarter Horses, founder of the Regional Stallion Access Program. Jennifer's road has taken her from Nevada to Canada, North Dakota, Texas, Oregon, and Montana, mostly running from snow. She finally landed in Louisiana, where she bred around 40 mares by herself this past season.
The Regional Stallion Access Program started as a friend's offhand idea, and Jennifer ran with it. Stallion owners send in frozen semen, and Jennifer promotes their horses for them. Every stud on the roster gets the same spotlight, whether he's earned a fortune or isn't even broke yet.
In this episode:
• How one small "what if" turned into a roster of stallions from across the country
• Why the other 99% of horse people deserve great stallions without taking out a second mortgage
• Why she refuses to let anyone feel like just a number
• Her go-to advice for anyone scared to start: what's the worst they can say? No.
• And yes, things get a little weird talking semen in public (airport story included)Connect with Jennifer: Facebook – Dry Creek Quarter Horses LLC

#59- Keep Social Media Social: 5 Tips for Horse Businesses That Actually Work | Caroline Arendt
Episode 59
Show notes
Are you a business owner stressing about social media? We got you. If you've ever stared at your phone wondering what to post, or spent a whole week planning content that should've taken five minutes, this episode is your sign to take a breath.
Caroline Arendt, owner of Caroline Arendt Creative, has spent about seven years running social media for horse, Western and ag businesses. Most days she works from her horse trailer. She tells Crystal how she went from thinking Instagram was "just a filter app" to quitting a secure job with two clients and a dream. Then COVID hit and marketing blew up.
Then she gets into her five tips for making social media work for your horse business:
• Consistency beats constantly
• Stop waiting for the perfect post
• Your business is already content
• Make it recognizable, not perfect
• Keep social media socialPlus: why your engagement matters more than your follower count, why cell phone videos are winning right now, and how to tell what's working using your insights.
Thinking about doing social media management as a career? Caroline covers that too. She talks about building a portfolio, learning marketing, pricing yourself fairly, and why that "free" work might open the biggest doors. She also shares her trick for handling imposter syndrome.
Whether you're a horse trainer, ranch, small Western business or just trying to grow your personal brand, you'll walk away with something you can use today.

#58- Stay Out of the Penalty Box: A Horse Show Judge's Guide to NRCHA & AQHA Ranch Classes with Jan Dublin
Episode 58
Show notes
Ever walked out of the show pen, grabbed your scorecard, and thought "...okay, but what actually happened?" Same. This week we pull up a chair next to horse show judge Jan Dublin and break down how NRCHA and AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse classes get scored, so you can stay out of the penalty box.
Jan got her first judge's card (NRHA) in 1998 and hasn't slowed down since. She now holds AQHA, NRCHA, and a long list of breed and stock horse association cards, and she judges a whole lot of ranch horse classes across the country from her home base in San Angelo, Texas.
In this episode:
• How scoring works: everyone starts at 70, maneuvers run +1½ to -1½, and penalties land in specific spots on your card
• Cutting: why switching cows costs you 5 points, what correct working position looks like, and how back fence markers work
• Reining: pattern placement, overspins, and how a missed lead change stacks up penalties fast
• Cow work and box drive box: fence turns, corner markers, and the real reason you didn't get a new cow
• Ranch trail and ranch riding: logs, lope departures, and why extended gaits shouldn't look like a horse race
• OPs vs. DQs in ranch classes (and why your tail braids need to come out before you walk in)
• How to read your scorecard, and why you should actually go ask your judgeWhether you're heading to the NILE in Billings this October (Jan will be there!) or gearing up for your first ranch horse show, this one's worth a listen. Maybe listen twice, with your rule book open.

#57- 2Rank 2Ride: Taming Mustangs, Egos, and Everything In Between with John Silva
Episode 57
Show notes
This week we sit down with John Silva of 2Rank 2Ride — a 30-year professional bulldogger turned Mustang trainer out of Wyoming who's built a whole brand (and a wildly entertaining TikTok following) out of taking wild BLM Mustangs and turning them into tough, versatile using horses.
We start with the horses — the painful learning curve of switching from rodeo horses to Mustangs, why John would rather over-reward good behavior than correct bad, and the origin story behind the name 2Rank 2Ride (it involves a wood stove, coffee, and Baileys). But the conversation doesn't stay in the round pen for long. What starts as horse talk turns into something bigger: taming egos, building the right circle, and the humility it takes to actually change.
John gets honest about who he used to be, why "listen to your dad" is advice nobody takes soon enough, and why the same patience it takes to earn a Mustang's trust is the patience it takes to earn your own growth.
Genuine, unfiltered, and a little dry — 2Rank 2Ride style.

#56- You Don't Have to be Qualified: A Cowboy's Call to Ministry with Dave Shumpert
Episode 56
Show notes
Dave Shumpert used to run cattle and horses from Colorado to the Canadian border — until a broken irrigation pipe, a bad mood, and one honest question to God changed the entire direction of his life. Today he leads X2D Ranch Ministries out of Ault, Colorado, feeding families in crisis through a herd God built and meeting horse people — literally — on both sides of the cattle guard.
This week on Horses Hope & Hustle, Dave gets real about identity, burnout, and what happens when the thing you built becomes the thing you worship. We get into a genuine conversation on leading people to God simply by being people of God — no polish, no script, just real talk about faith, ranching, and the ripple effect of showing up for people.

#55 The Cost of a Wonderful Life- Solo Reflection
Episode 55
Show notes
Six words from a past guest just rearranged my whole brain, and I couldn't NOT make an episode about it. Charlotte Volt said something so simple during our anniversary recap that I haven't stopped thinking about since: "That is the cost of a wonderful life."
In this solo episode, I'm unpacking what that means — for business, for relationships, for the messy, expensive, worth-it life you're building. I get real about my own darkest season, the years I spent rebuilding alone, and how every hard thing I paid for back then paid the price for the life I have now.
If you're in a season that feels like it's costing you everything, this one's for you. You might be one "no" away from the wonderful life you're working toward.
Stay true, stay tough, and keep hustling.

#54 One Year Later: Two Businesses, Two Totally Different Bets with Charolette Volt
Episode 54
Show notes
One year ago, Charlotte Vault of Colorado Horse Sale was Crystal's very first podcast guest. A lot has changed since then — for both of them.
In this one-year recap, Crystal and Charlotte get real about the completely different directions their businesses took over the last twelve months. Charlotte doubled down, adding vet requirements and radiograph sessions to elevate Colorado Horse Sale into a more selective, reputable sale — even when it meant fewer consignments and a serious "slice of humble pie." Crystal went the opposite way, selling her company, Big Sky Horse Sales, to go all-in on Horses Hope & Hustle.
They talk through burnout (including Charlotte's naturopath visit and the physical toll of chronic stress), how to take feedback without taking it personally, why quality over quantity is worth the growing pains, and why collaboration — not competition — has been the real secret to both of their businesses surviving the hard years.
This one is big sister business advice through and through: honest, unfiltered, and for anyone building something that isn't going the way they expected.
In this episode:
• Why Charlotte added vet exams and video requirements to every horse at Colorado Horse Sale
• The moment Crystal knew it was time to sell Big Sky Horse Sales
• How both women handled burnout and physical stress from running high-pressure businesses
• Why being selective in business is harder than it sounds — and worth it
• The power of collaboration over competition in the horse industry
• What they'd tell their younger selves about identity, stress, and successFollow Colorado Horse Sale: ColoradoHorseSale.com | @ColoradoHorseSale

#53 It's Impossible to Fail If You Keep Showing Up- Horse Training Long Game with Trevor & Kaylie Haught
Episode 53
Show notes
There's no shortcut to building a horse training business that lasts — and Trevor and Kaylie Haught of Haught Horses and Livestock in Scottsdale, Arizona are proof of it.
In this episode, Trevor and Kaylie get real about the decade it actually took to get here: quitting a steady paycheck to ride colts for twelve bucks a ride, living in a fifth wheel with no shade in 120-degree heat, and learning the hard way that talent alone doesn't build a full barn — relationships do. We talk about the growing pains nobody warns you about (employees, getting paid, running the business side of a horse business), the moment a near-disaster at a sale in Big Sky turned into one of their most important client relationships, and why they train every horse for who he actually is instead of who they wish he was.
If you've ever wondered whether doing the right thing consistently actually pays off — even when it feels painfully slow — this conversation is your answer.
In this episode:
• Why customer service, not talent, has carried their whole program
• The growing pains of hiring, getting paid, and running a horse business
• The Big Sky sale story that changed everything
• Training the horse in front of you instead of the one you wish you had
• Their advice for anyone starting out: keep learning, keep showing upFollow Trevor and Kaylie at Haught Horses and Livestock on Instagram and Facebook

#52- Building a Legacy: Mariah & Johnny Jerviss on Marriage, Horses & Betting on Yourself
Episode 52
Show notes
On this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, host Crystal Show sits down with Mariah and Johnny Jerviss of Legacy Horse Company — a husband-and-wife team who've built one of the most recognizable young-horse programs in the industry.
Mariah and Johnny share how their love story started at a birthday party in California, how "Legacy" became more than just a business name, and the moment they packed up everything they owned — including a one-year-old son — and moved to Wyoming with nothing but a leap of faith and a maxed-out credit card to buy their first horses.
They open up about the early struggles of building a brand from scratch, learning to market horses honestly instead of with "flourish," why they shifted their focus to yearlings and two-year-olds, and how simplifying their feed program changed their horses' health for good. Mariah and Johnny also get real about what it's actually like running a business — and raising a family — with your spouse: the fights, the growth, and why respect and quick apologies matter more than winning the argument.
Whether you're dreaming of starting your own horse business, married to your business partner, or just need a reminder that the struggle is part of the story — this episode is packed with hard-earned wisdom from two people who bet everything on their dream and made it work.
In this episode:
• How Mariah and Johnny met and built Legacy Horse Company from the ground up
• Why they shifted from aged horses to a colt-heavy program
• The credit-card gamble that jump-started their business in Wyoming
• Lessons on marketing horses honestly (and why over-embellishing backfires)
• Running a business and marriage together — the real, unfiltered version
• Their move to Dewey, Arizona and what's next for Legacy Horse CompanyConnect with Legacy Horse Company:

#51- Surrendered: Olivia Allen on Surviving an Eating Disorder and Finding Her Purpose in Horses
Episode 51
Show notes
In this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, we sit down with Olivia Allen — wife, mom, and reining horse trainer out of Oklahoma — for one of the most honest conversations we've had on the podcast.
Olivia opens up about growing up without the means to afford nice horses, working her way up cleaning stalls and riding other people's colts, and eventually building her own reining horse program from literally a gutted chicken coop. But behind the hustle was a private battle with an eating disorder that started in high school and spiraled during a season of isolation, anxiety, and a global pandemic — a battle she candidly shares brought her to her lowest point.
Olivia shares how a simple question to her now-husband on a drive home from church — "Do you think I'm good?" — led to her baptism that same night, and how surrendering her life to the Lord became the turning point that carried her out of years of struggle. She's now been free from her eating disorder for nearly five years, and shares openly about rebuilding her faith, her marriage, and a training program that's grown from a backyard round pen to a full-scale facility — all while raising her daughter alongside her husband in the barn.
This episode is a raw, faith-filled reminder that no one is too far gone, no one is alone, and God can take a shell of a person and do more than she ever imagined.
Content note: This episode includes an open discussion of disordered eating and suicidal thoughts. If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text, anytime.

#50- Dusty Whitford — Cutting Horse Trainer, Horse Pro TV Founder & Creator of Tin Top
Episode 50
Show notes
Dusty Whitford has built a cutting horse training program, a streaming platform, and now an independent television series — all without a dollar of corporate or Hollywood money. In this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, Dusty shares how he went from the Army National Guard to apprenticing under hall-of-fame cutting horse trainers, then built Horse Pro TV into a streaming app rivaling Netflix in scale, funded almost entirely by everyday horse people.
We dig into the real story behind Tin Top, his new PG-13 Western drama series shot entirely with real horse people (no actors), why he turned down big-money investors in favor of $1,000 checks from ranchers, and the marketing philosophy that's grown Tin Top's following by tens of thousands in a single month with zero ad budget.
Dusty also opens up about bullying in the horse industry, why chasing broad appeal kills your business, and the mindset shift that let him stop caring what people think — including his now-famous line: "By trying to please everyone, you attract no one."
In this episode:
• Building Horse Pro TV from a website to a full streaming app
• Why Dusty avoided big trainers and elite sponsors on purpose
• The real story and cast behind Tin Top
• Marketing with zero budget: turning followers into "an army of myself"
• Why fear — not money — is what actually kills most dreams🎥 Follow Dusty: Horse Pro TV & Tin Top on Facebook and in every major app store

#49- The Man Who Swore He'd Never Marry (And Then Met Crystal)
Episode 49
Show notes
Brian swore he'd never get married — until he met Crystal, and everything changed. In this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, Crystal and her husband Brian sit down together to open up about their whirlwind romance: less than six months from first date to "I do," and one full year of marriage since. They talk about what almost didn't happen, why they believe that when you know, you just know, and how God's hand was on their relationship from the very beginning.
Brian and Crystal share honest, real-talk marriage and relationship advice pulled straight from their own first year together — the highs, the hard parts, and the faith that carried them through it all. If you've ever wondered whether a fast love story can also be a lasting one, this episode is proof that it can.
Tune in for a raw, faith-filled conversation about love, timing, and trusting God's plan even when it doesn't look the way you expected.

#48 Morgan's Mountain Performance Horses: The $400,000 Jester Story
Episode 48
Show notes
Jester Sells for $400,000: Inside Morgan's Mountain Performance Horses' Record Sale at Premier's Big Sky Horse Sale
How does a family-raised colt named Jester become the reserve high seller — selling for a record-breaking $400,000 — at Premier's Big Sky Horse Sale? On this episode of Horses, Hope & Hustle, I sit down with Lisa Morgan, BJ Morgan, and Kelsey Friedly of Morgan's Mountain Performance Horses (MMPH) to break down exactly how it happened.
For over 30 years, this Montana horse breeding and training program has focused on raising working ranch horses — real using horses with mountain experience, not arena-bred show horses. Jester, a half-draft colt out of a Percheron bloodline, spent his early years packing salt, moving cattle, and working 25,000 acres of grazing land before ever setting foot in a sale ring.
We talk through the full journey to the Big Sky Premier Horse Sale: the professional photography and video marketing strategy that turned Jester's story into a must-follow, the registry and DNA testing scramble before the deadline, and what it actually felt like in the bleachers as the bidding blew past every number they'd imagined. As Lisa put it, "We didn't really think we had a story. We were just living it."
This episode covers:
• How Morgan's Mountain Performance Horses built a 30-year horse breeding program from a single Percheron stud
• What it takes to qualify for a premier performance horse sale (registries, scoring rubrics, professional video)
• The marketing strategy behind Jester's record-setting sale price
• The emotional, faith-filled moments behind the scenes at the sale
• Advice for anyone consigning a horse to a major sale for the first timeWhether you're a horse breeder, a ranch horse enthusiast, or just love a good underdog story, this conversation about Jester's $400K sale at Big Sky is one you don't want to miss.

#47 From Racehorses to Cow Horses with Manda McCarthy
Episode 47
Show notes
Some people wait for opportunities. Others create them. This week on Horses, Hope & Hustle, host Crystal Show sits down with horse trainer Manda McCarthy, whose journey has taken her from racing Thoroughbreds in Australia to training Warmbloods, and now building a career in the cow horse and cutting horse industry.
What makes Manda's story so inspiring isn't just the variety of horses she's trained — it's her mindset. Every time she set her sights on a new goal, she was willing to start from the bottom, put her nose to the grindstone, and do whatever it took to learn. She believes that becoming a better horseman starts with becoming a better student, and she's never stopped chasing knowledge that helps both her and her horses improve.
This conversation is about embracing the uncomfortable, trusting the process, and having the courage to reinvent yourself in pursuit of the life you want. Whether you're chasing a dream in the equine industry or simply trying to become better than you were yesterday, Manda's story is proof that hard work, humility, and a willingness to learn can take you farther than you ever imagined.
Topics covered: horse training, cutting horses, cow horses, Thoroughbred racing, Warmblood training, horsemanship, mindset, entrepreneurship in the horse industry, personal growth.
