CHELSEA ROBINSON - Matrescence, Maternal Identity and Rethinking the Expectations of Motherhood
Episode 80
Show notes
On today's episode, we're sitting down with Chelsea Robinson, who joined us on episode 71 to talk all about matrescence. Spoiler: today, we're talking about matrescence again — but this time, we're getting personal and hearing about Chelsea's lived experience. We'll touch on the ideas of intensive mothering, the systemic forces and societal expectations shaping how mothers feel about themselves, and what it looks like to reclaim your identity. We learn a lot about supporting ourselves as parents as we learn how to support our kids. As Chelsea puts it, "You heal for them, you unpack things, and eventually you come around and realize you deserve this too." Stick around for a hoot of a lightning round and a solid pitch to Pixar for the next Inside Out movie. This one is thoughtful, validating, and worth sharing with the mom in your life who thinks she's the only one. So, without further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our friend, Chelsea.

PSI’s Postpartum Psychosis Task Force with Julia Alzoubaidi
Episode 79
Show notes
On today's episode, we're sitting down with Julia Alzoubaidi, a licensed psychologist on staff here at PSI, to talk about Postpartum Psychosis and the incredible work of PSI's Postpartum Psychosis Task Force. We'll cover what Postpartum Psychosis actually is, who's at higher risk, and why it might get missed in the exact moment an accurate read matters most. Julia also makes a case that stuck with me: calling postpartum psychosis "rare" does real harm, because our language shapes how seriously everyone — providers included — takes it. In fact, Postpartum Psychosis happens more often than people think. It’s an emergency requiring immediate provider attention, It happens, it’s treatable, and it’s possible to recover. We'll get into the training and resources PSI has built, how lived experience shapes that work, the push for DSM recognition (wink, wink … nudge, nudge). This is exactly the conversation we should be having out loud - so, here we are. Without further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our friend, Julia.

Part 3 of 3: EMILY JOHNSON & GINNA ERICKSEN - Advocacy, Perinatal Treatment Access & Changing the System
Episode 78
Show notes
On today's episode, we're wrapping up our very first three-part series with both Emily Johnson and Ginna Ericksen. You've heard Emily's story from the inside and Ginna's from right beside it, and now we're talking about what they're doing with it. We'll chat about the gaps that they're working to close, too few intensive treatment options, zip codes that determine the care that you can get, and how little training many providers actually receive in perinatal mental health. We'll talk about Emily's new book, Women Are Dying, Deb (very exciting), the support network that Emily and Ginna have built, and the practical things that any of us can do in our communities. Plus, we'll chat about a few parenting hacks because we're nothing if not full service here at the I Am One podcast. Together, they've turned this shouldn't have happened to us into let's make sure it stops happening to other people. And they're doing it with two very different approaches in mind. We're so excited to share this conversation with you. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our friends, Emily and Ginna.

Part 2 of 3: GINNA ERICKSEN - Multigenerational Living and Support Through PMHDs
Episode 77
Show notes
On today's episode, we're kicking off part two of a three-part series where we'll hear about the pregnancy and postpartum experience from the perspective of a mother who supported her daughter every step of the way. Today, we're sitting down with Ginna Ericksen. Besides being a member of the PSI Volunteer Hall of Fame... That's not a real thing, I just made it up. Ginna is Emily Johnson's mom and the other half of the story that you heard in part one of this series. Today, we'll get the view from the support person. We'll talk about the early signs that didn't look like much at the time, the things that Ginna noticed during Emily's pregnancy that only made sense in hindsight, and what it's like to be the family member trying to get someone the right help from a system that just isn't built to move fast. The road that followed included some genuinely frightening moments and a lot of advocating. What changed everything? Ginna's incessant drive to ask important questions and find answers. This one is tender and essential listening for anyone loving someone through perinatal mental health complications. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy part two with our friend, Ginna.

Part 1 of 3: EMILY JOHNSON - Hospitalization, Recovery & Weaknesses in the U.S. Healthcare System
Episode 76
Show notes
On today's episode, we're kicking off part 1 of a 3 part series where we’ll hear about the pregnancy and postpartum experience from the perspective of a new mother and someone who supported her every step of the way.
Today, we're sitting down with Emily Johnson — a mom, a writer, and an absolute powerhouse of an advocate who is passionate about challenging weaknesses in the US healthcare system. She knows, because she’s navigated it - both personally and professionally. Emily’s entree into motherhood wasn’t at all what she or her family ever expected. She knew something was wrong. She just didn't have the terminology, and neither did most of the people she was asking for help, to pinpoint what was going on or how to find relief. We'll talk about crippling anxiety, what it feels like to leave appointment after appointment with no real answers or resources, and a middle of the night phone call to a crisis line that kicked her family support into high gear. The road that followed included a hospital stay, a specialized program that was miraculously 10 minutes from home, and a family that showed up in a big way. This one is raw, and a powerful reminder of why PSI is in existence - so parents and families face fewer roadblocks to accessing the specialized, informed care that they deserve. We’ve been counting down the days until we could share this 3 part series with you. So, without further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy part 1 with our friend, Emily.

MELODYE PHILLIPS - Birth Trauma, Postpartum Depression & Realizing You’re Not a Bad Mom
Episode 75
Show notes
On today's episode, we're sitting down with Melodye Phillips, a perinatal mental health certified licensed professional counselor supervisor and certified eating disorder specialist who owns and operates her own practice in East Texas. Melodye specializes in working with mothers through pregnancy, postpartum, loss, complicated pregnancies, birth trauma, and disordered eating. And she brings something to this work that goes beyond her credentials. She's a perinatal mental health disorder survivor, she's a loss mama, she has three kids of her own. Her experience in this field isn't just professional. It's personal, and it shows in the way that she talks about this work. We'll talk about it all today, what it means to hold space for mothers in some of their hardest moments, and what it looks like when the person doing the work has lived some of those moments herself. Oh, and let's just say that delivering a baby can take some unexpected turns. There was an incident involving a squirrel, a transformer, and electricity at the hospital. We don't want to spoil it. We'll let Melodye do the honors. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our friend Melodye.

KENDALL CONCINI - Silent Reflux, PPD & Cloudy Days
Episode 74
Show notes
On today's episode, we're sitting down with Kendall Concini-Moore, a perinatal mental health advocate who will tell you that she never wanted to be a mother until she did. When she changed her mind, Kendall and her husband made a plan. They knew that with her mental health history, postpartum depression was a real possibility, and they made sure that supports were in place before ever trying to conceive. They did everything right, and it was still incredibly hard. Today, we'll hear about pregnancy loss, an early birth, a baby with silent reflux, a pandemic, and a version of motherhood that looked nothing like what she planned for. We'll talk about what it's like to prepare for something and still be leveled by it and how she found her way through anyway. Oh, and she wrote a children's book that helps kids understand what it looks like when mom is struggling with depression. So of course, we'll drop a link to that in the show notes as always. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our friend, Kendall.

Show notes
On today’s episode, we’re sitting down to discuss yet another incredible program here at PSI! We’ll be talking with Elizabeth Lilley about the vital work of PSI’s Legal Justice Program, which focuses on educating legal professionals about perinatal mental health disorders and helping improve the support available to parents and families involved in the legal system in the context of a perinatal mental health disorder. This conversation covers PSI’s free resources for legal professionals and families, volunteer opportunities, and the importance of reducing stigma around mental health disorders — which are temporary and treatable. Altogether now: perinatal mental health disorders are temporary and treatable. So, without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode spotlighting PSI's Legal Justice Program.

Episode 72
Show notes
On today’s episode, we’re sitting down with … ourselves! PSI's Annual Conference is right around the corner, and we know what that means — familiar faces, big energy, and a lot of people who are going to walk past the Climb table and think, wait, what is that? So we figured — we have microphones. Let's talk about it! Before I ever led a Climb, I attended one. I showed up to support a friend. What I didn't know at the time was that I was there for me, too. I just didn't know it yet. Whether you're thinking about attending a PSI Climb event, leading one, partnering with one — or you've heard about The Climb and aren't entirely sure what we're talking about — this one's for you. And if you're headed to PSI’s Annual Conference this year, come say hi to us at the Climb table! Without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and let's talk about how to get involved in a Climb near you!

What Is Matrescence?
Episode 71
Show notes
On today's episode, we're talking about matrescence. And if that's a word you've never heard before, you are not alone and you are in exactly the right place. Matrescence is the process of becoming a mother. It's a developmental passage, biological, emotional, social, spiritual. It can begin before birth. And according to our guest, Chelsea Robinson, it may even last a lifetime. Think of it like adolescence, but for motherhood. Messy, disorienting, and probably nothing like what you expected. Chelsea is a licensed clinical social worker, and she brings both the clinical grounding and genuine passion for this topic. We dive into why so many mothers feel blindsided by the identity shift that comes with parenthood. I know that this rings true for a couple of podcast hosts. We also talk about why simply having a name for this experience can be quietly life-changing, and how to know what's normal versus when we might need some extra support. Whether you're in the thick of early motherhood or years in wondering why it still feels like a lot, this one's for you. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode all about matrescence.

Postpartum Planning Class: A PSI Resource
Episode 68
Show notes
Welcome to the I Am One podcast. On today's episode, we're talking about something that doesn't get nearly enough attention in all of those months of getting ready for baby: your mental health after they arrive. We plan for birth, for feeding, for the nursery and the car seat in a hospital bag or bags. Listen, nobody's judging, okay? You pack as many bags as you need. But the emotional reality of postpartum, that part usually gets skipped or saved for after the fact when you're already in the thick of it. Luckily, PSI has a free postpartum planning class designed to change that. It helps expectant parents think ahead about their own well-being, not just the newborn logistics, so that when things get hard, you've already got something in place to help. So without any further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode spotlighting PSI's postpartum planning class.

PATRICIA HOPPMANN - NICU, PPD, and One Mom's Unplanned Dream Come True
Episode 65
Show notes
On today's episode, we're sitting down with Patricia Hoppmann — a Peer Support Program Assistant here at PSI and, as she puts it, the team's unofficial 'sweeper.' That’s a sports reference … sigh … nevermind. We’ll chat about how Patricia's journey into motherhood was unplanned. The road that followed included early labor, the NICU, breastfeeding challenges, PPD, and the very real fear of being honest about how she was feeling. What changed everything? Peer support — and finding the right therapist. This one is honest, heartfelt, and full of the kind of realness that makes you feel less alone. So, without further ado, please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with our good friend, Patricia.
