  1. JMU Football Troy Loss Recap: Napier, Alma Mater & Overreactions | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU is 7-2 after two straight overtime losses, and Bennett and Jack are back for the full recap of the Troy loss.

They start with Billy Napier’s apology for the team leaving before the alma mater, why the tradition matters to them, and what it says about the culture. Then they get into the offense. After scoring on its first three drives, JMU went 13 straight possessions without a point, and the hosts debate whether that’s a player problem or a coaching problem, starting with the overtime fourth-and-one play that Cam Aiken said he loved.

They also cover the five turnovers, why the student section emptied out early on Halloween, and the new must-win at Southern Miss. They break down a full Overreaction Corner, including the “pack of bears” idea and a very long take on whether the program is doomed. They also compare the reaction to Bob Chesney’s second loss in 2024 (the same complaints, with more vitriol), argue over whether this year’s team would beat the 2024 team, and run through the Sun Belt title game scenarios.

Plus: Bennett’s hot take, a look at the Southern Miss line, and a full men’s and women’s basketball recap after the opener loss to Miami (OH).

️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Intro: basketball season and the committee’s view of overtime 2:36 – The alma mater debate 4:56 – Napier’s apology 5:30 – 13 possessions in a row without a point 6:50 – The overtime fourth-and-one play 8:06 – The five turnovers vs. the coaching decisions 10:26 – Why the students left, and the Halloween Thursday 11:36 – A must-win at Southern Miss 12:09 – Overreaction Corner 17:24 – The “pack of bears” overreaction 18:46 – The two-QB debate and is JC Evans healthy? 22:01 – Oregon State’s meltdown 22:33 – The “good days are behind us” overreaction 24:43 – Same reactions as Chesney’s second loss in 2024 26:27 – Hot take: 2026 JMU would beat 2024 JMU 27:34 – Sun Belt title game scenarios 31:31 – Bennett’s EPA hot take 34:39 – Game on Paper’s Southern Miss projection 35:30 – Men’s basketball: Miami (OH) loss 39:21 – Women’s basketball 42:13 – Outro

  2. JMU Falls to Troy in OT: Turnovers Cost the Dukes | To The House

    Show notes

JMU has lost two straight in overtime. After falling at App State, the Dukes dropped a home game to Troy, finishing the loss with five turnovers and six penalties while getting shut out in the second half.

This week, Delvin Joyce skips the usual recap and breaks down four themes from the loss. JMU Hall of Famer Vad Lee then answers your questions on the two-quarterback rotation, the interceptions and what changes next.

In this episode of To The House:

    • Theme 1: An identity crisis. Delvin on the offense and the quarterback rotation, plus comparisons to 2024
    • Theme 2: Self-inflicted wounds. Five turnovers, six offensive penalties, four false starts and a growing list of personal fouls and unsportsmanlike penalties
    • Theme 3: Leadership and response. The late-game clock management, the fourth-and-1 decision in overtime, and who steps up in the locker room
    • Theme 4: The road ahead. The Sun Belt East race, what a successful finish looks like, and why one game at a time matters
    • Vad Lee, answering fan questions: whether two quarterbacks kills rhythm, who should start, a breakdown of Cam Coleman’s two interceptions and JC Evans’ pick six, and the bye-week question
    • Delvin and Vad on the difference between a two-quarterback “system” and a “rotation”
    • Take It To The House: football as a mirror, and how fans respond

  3. JMU vs Troy Reaction: OT Loss, Clock Management & Napier Questions | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU lost 24-21 in overtime to Troy at home, its second straight overtime loss, and Bennett and Jack react right away in a bonus episode.

They break down the last two minutes of regulation: why Billy Napier let the clock run before calling timeouts, and why the Dukes took a Hail Mary instead of a ten-yard throw that would have put Morgan Suarez in range for a 40-yard field goal.

They also cover the overtime fourth-and-one call and the mid-drive quarterback change, why the 33-yard “kick line” was worse than a coin flip, the five turnovers and quarterbacks staring down receivers, and why this loss raises bigger questions about the coaching staff than the App State game did.

Plus: the team not staying for the alma mater and what Seth Cromwell’s night showed. The Dukes are 7-2 and head to Southern Miss on Thursday.

️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Intro: reacting to the Troy loss 0:45 – Terrible game, and not staying for the alma mater 1:22 – The game-winning field goal and the iced kicker 2:16 – Why this was the most frustrating game of the year 3:42 – The end of regulation: first-and-ten with two timeouts 4:33 – The timeout timing debate 7:07 – Third-and-ten and the missed shot to Michael Scott 8:12 – Fourth-and-ten: why not take the throw to the sticks? 8:40 – Quarterbacks staring down receivers 11:29 – Overtime fourth-and-one and the QB switch 13:26 – How involved is Napier in the offense? 14:00 – The 33-yard “kick line” and Suarez’s numbers 16:35 – “This is stuff in Madden” 17:39 – Culture, discipline and the alma mater 20:24 – The final three games and fan trust 22:25 – The national statement they didn’t want to make 23:22 – Looking ahead to Southern Miss 24:12 – Overreactions 25:38 – The turnover bug 26:25 – Third-and-fifteen: why didn’t JMU stack the box? 28:05 – Undefeated in regulation (hang the banner) 28:49 – Shout-out to Seth Cromwell

  4. JMU vs Troy Preview: Sun Belt Title Game Rematch + Pick ’Em | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU gets a rematch of last year’s Sun Belt title game on Thursday night at home. This time Troy is 3-4, 1-2 SBC after a brutal stretch: a 33-6 loss to Louisiana and a home loss to previously winless ULM, which included a bizarre late lateral fumble.

Bennett and Jack explain why the Dukes (favored by about three touchdowns) should win big, starting with Troy’s quarterback play. Goose Crowder and Tucker Kilcrease have combined for roughly -12.9 expected points added against FBS opponents.

They also break down the matchup details: Troy’s strong run defense against JMU’s chance to attack through the air, a huge net field position edge for the Dukes (sixth nationally vs. 112th for Troy), and why JMU’s penalties and third-down problems could keep a blowout from happening. Plus: why this game is a must-have bounce-back after the App State loss.

Then it’s your listener questions on the pass rush, which App State loss hurt the most, which concerns have been fixed, the toughest test left on the schedule, and what Pettaway’s injury means for the backfield.

They finish with the Sun Belt Weekly Pick ’Em and a rundown of JMU sports.

️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Intro: the Sun Belt title game rematch 0:30 – What went wrong for Troy (3-4) 1:15 – The ULM loss and the lateral fumble 2:05 – Is Troy angry or just devastated? 2:41 – Troy’s quarterback numbers: Crowder and Kilcrease 4:09 – Field goals, defense and the nerd numbers 5:49 – The short-week disadvantage for Troy 6:50 – How JMU wins: attack through the air 7:28 – Field position and special teams edge 7:56 – JMU’s penalties and third-down problems 10:06 – What a “get-back game” looks like 11:02 – Listener questions 11:21 – Ranking the App State losses (2022 vs. 2023) 12:48 – The pass rush and defensive play calling 13:41 – Which concerns have been fixed? 14:12 – The biggest test left and winning out 14:41 – Pettaway injury and Nick Herman 15:44 – Sun Belt Weekly Pick ’Em 19:09 – Thursday night plans and around JMU sports 20:29 – Monitoring the situation (the segment)

  6. JMU vs App State Recap: OT Loss, Two-Point Debate & Playoff Hopes | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU’s undefeated season is over. The Dukes lost at App State in overtime after Billy Napier chose to kick the extra point instead of going for two to win in regulation.

Bennett and Jack break down everything that went wrong, starting with why they dismissed App State on paper, and why a roster of FCS and D2 transfers looked rattled in the biggest road environment of its life.

They go through the two-point decision and the overtime play call, the first-half drive chart (too many punts and too few points), and the pass rush numbers that worry them (142 pressures but very few sacks). They also argue about whether JC Evans should play more in the two-quarterback system and whether JMU deserved to be in the playoff conversation in the first place. Then they run through the Sun Belt East and title game picture, why they’re ready to leave the Sun Belt’s fan bases behind, and a full Overreaction Corner built from 136 submissions. Plus: JMU Sports News tailgate plans for the Coastal game.

  8. JMU vs App State Preview + Sun Belt Football Pick ’Em | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU is 7-0 and heads to Boone for its first Thursday night game of the year, with a short week and a lot of noise around the program.

Bennett and Jack break down App State (4-2, 1-1 in the Sun Belt), including the QB situation with Malachi Singleton banged up and Henry Hasselbeck coming off a 125-yard rushing game. They also look at why the Mountaineers’ advanced stats are underwhelming: App State ranks 104th nationally in adjusted EPA per play on offense. They explain why the real danger to JMU’s undefeated season is self-inflicted mistakes, and how a fast App State start could change the game.

Then it’s listener questions on the defensive line’s pressures vs. sacks, how the late bye week could help, a plan for a Sun Belt Championship Game meetup, the G6 playoff debate, how the two quarterbacks will be used in Boone, and whether JMU gets ranked with a win. 12. JMU vs Georgia State Preview: Upset Alert? | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

Georgia State was supposed to be the snooze fest of JMU’s homecoming week, and now it might be the Dukes’ toughest test of the month.

Bennett and Jack break down why the Panthers (4-1) are a real threat. Georgia State ranks 12th nationally in pass EPA, and QB Cam Brown, a former Texas Tech quarterback, has 13 touchdowns and one interception. They also explain how the matchup sets Georgia State’s elite pass defense against its weak run defense, and why George Petaway could have a huge day against one of the nation’s worst teams at allowing explosive runs.

Then Brady Weiler of Panther Talk joins the show to explain how Georgia State went from the worst defense in the FBS to a Sun Belt East contender. He covers Dell McGee’s new portal strategy, a pass rush with 19 sacks in five games, the offensive playmakers to know, and the two things that decide whether the Panthers can win in Harrisonburg: stopping the run and not turning the ball over.

After the interview, it’s the Sun Belt Weekly Pick ’Em, with score predictions for JMU-Georgia State, followed by a rundown of the JMU sports scene: soccer, volleyball, field hockey and a Chase DeLauter shoutout.

  14. JMU to The American Conference: Why They’re Leaving the Sun Belt

    Show notes

JMU is leaving the Sun Belt for the American Conference, and Bennett and Jack break down everything behind the move.

They cover the reported $23 million entry fee funded by corporate sponsors and private donors, why media rights revenue could roughly triple, and how the timeline could work, with JMU in the American no later than July 1, 2028. They also explain why the American turned JMU down in 2022 and why this time it said yes.

They also get into what the move means for football, basketball and the playoff conversation, the Sun Belt fans’ “we made you” reaction, a road trip comparison of the Sun Belt’s small towns and the American’s big cities, and what happens next with the American’s odd number of teams. They confirm that JMU stays eligible for the postseason while it’s in the Sun Belt and that the Liberty series is unaffected.

Plus: your listener questions on realignment, a quick look at the Georgia Southern win and the secondary, and Overreaction Corner.

  16. JMU Football Searches For Its First Win At Georgia Southern | JMU Sports News Podcast

    Show notes

JMU has never won in Statesboro, and this week's forecast could make the game a mud-soaked slog. Bennett and Jack start with a special weather edition of the podcast, then use the numbers to show why JMU should win, including the Dukes' top-30 passing efficiency, Georgia Southern's weak secondary, and a big special teams and field position gap.

Brian also gives his Sun Belt East and West champion picks and his biggest surprises of the season.

Plus: listener questions on JMU "living rent-free" in other fan bases, how to keep students from leaving at halftime, and how the transfer portal affects this roster. Bennett explains what voting in the AP poll is really like, then the guys break down strength of record vs. strength of schedule. They finish with the Sun Belt Weekly Pick 'Em and a roundup of JMU sports.
