  1. Ep 275 - Elemental Landscape Photography with Tirta Winata

    Season 6, Episode 275

    Show notes

Tirta Winata started photographing with his father's DSLR in Jakarta and eventually earned a Master's degree in art creation from the Jakarta Institute of Arts. His practice began as personal meditation, a way to experience solitude and freedom in nature, and gradually evolved into something he calls elemental photography.

The idea is straightforward but demanding. Tirta isolates a single element of nature in its environment, portraying it as if untouched by human intervention, the way a portrait captures a person's identity. Much of this work is minimalist black and white, shaped partly by Indonesia's long rainy season and his partial colorblindness.

In this episode Tirta talks about using constraint to expand compositional options, the challenges of applying minimalism to wider scenes, and how Indonesia's climate and infrastructure shape what's possible in the field. He also shares a delayed flight in Bali that led to a waterfall image that caught gallery attention, and his frustration with social media in an era of generative AI.

  2. Ep 274 - Yellowstone Wildlife & Wilderness with Tom Murphy

    Season 6, Episode 274

    Show notes

Tom Murphy grew up on a 7500 acre cattle ranch in western South Dakota, which taught him animal behaviour, a love of wide open land, and a firm conviction that chasing cows wasn't his future. He's been photographing Yellowstone since 1975 and has skied across the park three times, including a solo 175 mile, 14 day crossing in 1985.

Few photographers know Yellowstone as intimately as Tom does. He was the first person licensed to lead photography tours in the park, has donated work to the Old Faithful and Mammoth visitor centres, and has published multiple books including the Emmy nominated Silence and Solitude and the four volume Seasons of Yellowstone series.

In this episode Tom talks about his fieldwork process, giving wildlife the space to tell their own stories, and what five decades of backcountry travel in one of the world's great wilderness areas has taught him about patience, presence and the natural world.

  3. Ep 273 - Mastering Fine Art Landscape Photography & Film with Dani Watson

    Season 5, Episode 273

    Show notes

Danielle Watson spent more than 20 years in professional sport as a tennis coach and biomechanics specialist before burnout brought him to a stop. She walked into a camera store in Melbourne one quiet afternoon, bought a DSLR without a plan, and photographed her eight week old kelpie. The images travelled further than expected and something clicked.

The years since have been serious and deliberate. A Master's degree pushed her well beyond technical skill into meaning, artist statements and immersive presentation. Working alongside Ken Duncan taught her discipline, storytelling and the responsibility of making work someone might choose to live with for years. Film and a Hasselblad system slowed her process and sharpened her intent.

In this episode Dani talks about co-founding Irid Gallery to present limited edition fine art photography at art fairs, moving from grand dramatic vistas toward atmosphere and aerial abstraction, and why she now makes far fewer images than she used to.

  4. Ep 272 - Landscape Photography & Creative Vision with Saumya Kesurvala

    Season 5, Episode 272

    Show notes

Saumya Kesurvala has spent 15 years as a professional designer and visual storyteller, working across brand identity, editorial and environmental graphics. Landscape photography has become his way of stepping away from screens and reconnecting with the natural world.

Growing up in a creative household and attending boarding school close to nature gave him an early appreciation for the outdoor experience itself, not just the images it produces. That philosophy shapes how he approaches long term projects, including photographing Uluru with the Milky Way core and capturing an osprey crossing the moon, both requiring serious research and pre-visualisation.

In this episode Saumya talks about valuing community over gear, navigating social media comparison, and choosing exhibition images based on the joy of making them rather than technical perfection. He also shares memorable close calls on an Iceland glacier and a near encounter with a brown snake, plus his thoughts on AI and the importance of honesty in photography.

  5. Ep 271 - New Zealand Landscapes & ICM Photography with Noelle Bennett

    Season 5, Episode 271

    Show notes

Noelle Bennett moved from northwest England to New Zealand in 2002 and was immediately overwhelmed by the light, colour and space of her new home. A camera arrived in 2013 and she hasn't stopped since.

Now living in a tiny home in the foothills of the Southern Alps after living on a yacht her husband built in the Marlborough Sounds, Noelle seeks out quiet locations well off the tourist trail, often via off-roading and drone work to reach truly remote perspectives.

Her ICM body of work grew out of a difficult period when her husband was seriously ill, The experience of pulling that body of work together was cathartic and ultimately earned her a Fellowship from the Photographic Society of New Zealand in 2025, their highest distinction.

In this episode Noelle talks about spontaneous feeling led shooting, her post processing work in Affinity Photo including multi-image composites and live stacking, and using competitions as a tool for focus and growth rather than validation.

  6. Ep 270 - Storytelling via Aerial Abstract Photography with Nilmini de Silva

    Season 6, Episode 270

    Show notes

Nilmini De Silva grew up in Sri Lanka, studied civil engineering at UC Berkeley, taught English in South Korea, backpacked across Europe and Asia, and eventually landed in Australia in 1998. A ten month sabbatical that included conservation photography work in South Africa, cheetah documentation in Namibia and a trip to Antarctica changed the direction of her life entirely.

She launched her first exhibition in 2011 and spent five years living and travelling Australia in a motorhome with her partner, covering stretches of the country most people never see. These days her work centres on aerial photography, flying over salt lakes, flood plains and working sheep stations by drone and light aircraft, finding abstract paintings in the Australian landscape from above.

In this episode Nilmini talks about discovering drone photography during COVID, repeated recognition in the Siena Drone Awards, how editing reveals muted aerial colour and texture, and using competitions and exhibitions as tools for honest feedback and craft development.

  7. Ep 269 - The Circle of Light: Women Elevating Nature Photography

    Season 6, Episode 269

    Show notes

Circle of Light is a collaboration between six landscape and nature photographers, Anna Morgan, Charlotte Gibb, Claudia Welsch, Jennifer Renwick, Michele Sons and Sarah Marino, formed to counter the isolation that comes with landscape photography and to push the boundaries of what nature photography can express.

Their first project, the ebook The Nature of Place, brings together lead essays and dialogue style responses that read like a campfire conversation about creativity, connection to place and personal expression. It's the result of 18 months of Zoom calls, peer editing and genuine collaborative effort.

In this episode four of the six members talk about building supportive peer community, encouraging photography as expressive art rather than technique driven documentation, and why elevating diverse voices in the landscape photography world matters to them. They also discuss solitude versus community, finding honest critique networks and their thoughts on AI's growing presence in photography.

  8. Ep 268 - Waterfalls & Landscape Photography with Jeffrey Tadlock

    Season 5, Episode 268

    Show notes

Jeffrey Tadlock grew up around cameras, his dad was an advanced amateur with a Nikon film setup, and early years photographing BMX and skateboarding events taught him camera settings before he really knew what he was doing. A decade long gap ended in 2016 when he picked up his wife's old Nikon and the fire came back.

Based in Ohio, Jeffrey has built a life around landscape photography as a creative outlet alongside a headshot business, YouTube channel and the Shutter Nonsense podcast. A sunset on Lake Erie shot on his phone was the moment that shifted his focus from documentary snapshots to images that try to convey how a place actually feels.

In this episode Jeffrey talks about his patient approach to working scenes particularly waterfalls, the value of revisiting locations like Hocking Hills and Death Valley, and why he defines success as enjoying the process rather than chasing great images. His natural, true to scene editing philosophy is refreshing too.

  9. Ep 267 - Landscapes & Wildlife Photography Around Bathurst with Warren Lloyd

    Season 5, Episode 267

    Show notes

Warren Lloyd got his start with a Praktica SLR and a Mamiya 600mm lens in the late 1970s, learning fast because film cost money and mistakes weren't cheap. A robbery cleared out his gear and photography went quiet for years, until a 2013 road trip through southeast Australia reignited the bug for good.

Now retired and based in Bathurst, Warren has found a rich subject in the rolling countryside on his doorstep. Fog, moody light, the Capertee Valley and locations like Oberon Dam give him more than enough to work with close to home, supplemented by occasional architectural shoots in Sydney.

In this episode Warren talks about using PhotoPills to plan shoots alongside spontaneous outings, entering competitions with themed series, and using captions to promote conservation including work in an endangered grassy box woodland reserve. He also shares a practical rain tip involving shower caps and the story of a camera destroyed by a wave.

  10. Ep 266 - Street Photography & Mindful Living with Greg Cromie

    Season 5, Episode 266

    Show notes

Greg Cromie first fell in love with photography at school, then stepped away while life took over. It was his wife's sudden death in 2013 that brought him back, using the camera as therapy and a way to re-engage mindfully with the world around him.

Based in Melbourne, Greg's focus is street and travel photography, roaming the city's laneways and making an annual trip to Japan to document a culture he's genuinely fascinated by. His involvement with the Australian Fujifilm community, regular blogging and paid writing for outlets like Shotkit and Lucky Straps keep his thinking sharp and his motivation strong through Melbourne winters and the harder days.

In this episode Greg talks about the ethics and safety of street photography, his minimal editing approach using Fujifilm film simulations, involvement with the Bright Festival of Photography, and how writing and shooting consistently fuel each other. He's also thoughtful about what authentic human experience means in an era of AI generated imagery.

  11. Ep 265 - Conservation Photography & Ecological Thinking with Anna Morgan

    Season 5, Episode 265

    Show notes

Anna Morgan came to landscape photography via veterinary science, her own practice, and a Master's degree in Conservation Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. That research brought photography and conservation together in ways that still shape everything she does.

Now based on Vancouver Island after moving from the UK, Anna gravitates toward quiet, intimate scenes and abstract interpretations of the natural world rather than grand vistas or wildlife subjects. She chose landscapes partly to avoid disturbing animals, and partly because solitude in nature is central to her practice and her wellbeing.

In this episode Anna talks about Indigenous stewardship and why she avoids sharing precise locations, her preference for intuitive and serendipitous shooting over heavy planning, and how she defines success as opening people's hearts rather than building a large audience. She also discusses running workshops focused on authenticity, creativity and ecological connection, and the thinking behind her master's thesis on photographers' roles in conservation.

  12. Ep 264 - From Australia, Across the World with Timothy Poulton

    Season 5, Episode 264

    Show notes

Timothy Poulton's path to landscape photography wound through graphic design, print marketing and a serious motorsport career that ended when the passion ran out. A cherry blossom shoot in Tokyo in 2007 pointed him in a new direction, and he hasn't looked back.

Best known in Australia for his Photoshop and post processing courses, Timothy has built a reputation for helping photographers master complex digital workflows and prepare work confidently for print, competition and publication. His iconic Shocking Bondi image won the International Aperture Awards in 2011 and his courses regularly sell out.

In this episode Timothy talks about building and eventually scaling back an international touring operation running up to 14 tours a year, the competitive realities and online negativity that come with a visible profile in the industry, and what he actually defines as success. His fast Photoshop based editing workflow and thoughts on photography's future amid phone cameras and AI are worth hearing too.

  13. Ep 263 - The Art of Landscape Photography with Joe Cornish

    Season 5, Episode 263

    Show notes

Joe Cornish has been photographing landscapes professionally since the early 1980s, and few people in the UK have thought more carefully or more deeply about what landscape photography actually is.

With an art school background and early influences including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Joe has always approached the landscape as an expressive art form rather than simple documentation. That philosophy runs through dozens of books, National Trust commissions, artist in residence projects at Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks, and a career that earned him an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society.

In this episode Joe talks about cultivating curiosity and visual literacy as foundations for better photography, the value of collaboration and peer learning, and why he finds the craft of editing and printing as creatively satisfying as being out in the field. He also reflects on landscape photography's relationship to environmental change and the role images can play in helping people value the natural world.

  14. Ep 262 - Yosemite Landscape Photography with Michael Frye

    Season 5, Episode 262

    Show notes

Michael Frye has lived in or near Yosemite National Park since 1983. That kind of deep, sustained connection to a place shapes everything about how he photographs, and it shows in work that's been published in over 30 countries and featured in National Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer and American Photo among many others.

His time at the Ansel Adams Gallery was formative, bringing him into contact with photographic history, printmaking and a way of working that emphasises decisions made before the shutter rather than fixes made after. That old school foundation sits underneath everything he does, even the surreal nighttime work and high key images that sit alongside his classic landscapes.

In this episode Michael talks about conveying how a place feels rather than just how it looks, balancing planned shoots with spontaneous responses to conditions, and building a sustainable photography business alongside his wife. He's also thoughtful about growing mistrust in imagery as manipulation and AI become harder to detect.

  15. Ep 261 - Peter Eastway: 50 Years of Landscape Photography

    Season 5, Episode 261

    Show notes

Peter Eastway has been photographing for more than 50 years, from film era long exposures and surf photography to becoming one of Australia's most decorated and internationally recognised photographers. He's also spent four decades in publishing, running Better Photography magazine since 1995.

His concept of The New Tradition and invisible Photoshop sits at the heart of how he works, subtle, seamless post production that expands creative control without drawing attention to itself. It's an approach that's earned him a Grand Master of Photography title and ambassadorships with Phase One, Canon, Adobe and others.

In this episode Peter talks about using projects to guide shooting, building a database of ideas by studying other artists, and why he makes work for himself rather than for judges. He's also refreshingly candid about the business realities of professional photography, his practical view of AI as a tool, and the difference between running workshops and photo tours.

    Season 5, Episode 260

    Show notes

Scott Leggo's path to becoming one of Australia's most recognised landscape photographers took in an Air Force career, frontline service, high performance aerobatic aircraft and a stint as a diplomat. The discipline and attention to detail from those years transfers directly into how he runs his photography business today.

Based in Canberra with a gallery, a team and over a million photos sold, Scott has built something genuinely rare, a commercially successful artist led business with Australian landscape photography at its core.

In this episode Scott talks about simplifying compositions by eliminating distractions, scouting on location rather than over planning, and how customer demand shapes his work more than personal preference. He also covers a successful COVID era jigsaw puzzle pivot, safety in remote environments and why conveying emotion has always been a bigger challenge for him than mastering camera settings.

    Season 5, Episode 259

    Show notes

Alfonso Calero grew up in Manila with National Geographic on the coffee table and his father's camera in his hands. After moving to Australia at 15 and spending a year travelling Europe, he eventually turned a lifelong passion into a professional photography career at 30.

The path there wound through hotel porter work and tour guiding across multiple languages, and it's that background in connecting with people and places that shapes everything he does. His photo walks grew from a single Sydney outing into a national business now operating across six Australian cities and internationally in destinations including Tasmania, the Philippines, Japan, Spain and the Faroe Islands.

In this episode Alfonso talks about using the camera to build empathy with local communities, the importance of returning to a location repeatedly to truly understand it, and the logistics of running photography experiences that work for complete beginners and experienced shooters alike.

  18. Ep 258 - Aurora & Rocky Mountain Photography with James Andrew

    Season 5, Episode 257

    Show notes

James Andrew bought his first camera in 2018 to document his daughter growing up. He was working as an electrician at the time and spending his days off driving out into the Rockies alone. A Tuesday night aurora at Peyto Lake at minus 30 changed everything.

Three years of learning the craft later, James walked away from a 20 year electrician career to pursue photography full time. Based in Calgary, minutes from Banff National Park, he photographs aurora, storm light and the fleeting moments that most people never slow down enough to see.

In this episode James talks about balancing the creative pull of the Rockies with prairie landscapes, how a Discord community accelerated his improvement through honest critique, the gap between social media growth and actual print sales, and how he's building a print based business while keeping his storytelling authentically human amid the spread of AI imagery.

  19. Ep 257 - Project Based Landscape Photography with David Baker

    Season 5, Episode 258

    Show notes

David Baker started with a small digital camera photographing standing stones. Early photo blogging and the feedback it generated gradually shifted his focus from simple documentation toward images that convey how a place actually feels.

Based in rural Aberdeenshire after a lifetime on the south coast of England, David works exclusively in long term projects, each with its own constraints and parameters. Five books published, more than 20 exhibitions including three appearances at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and an Arts Council funded solo show at Southampton City Art Gallery mark out a serious and sustained practice.

In this episode David talks about using mapped circles, triangles and specific times as creative constraints, the role of instinct over heavy planning, and why printing and handmade books are the essential final step in his process. He also reflects on how moving to northeast Scotland changed his subjects while keeping his project based approach completely intact.

  20. Ep 256 - Tasmania's Tarkine & Conservation Photography with Tim Cooper

    Season 5, Episode 256

    Show notes

Tim Cooper is a full time picture framer based in northwest Tasmania who spends as much time as possible in the Tarkine, one of the most significant and threatened wilderness regions in the Southern Hemisphere.

Since 2016 his photography has focused on the rainforests, rivers and rugged coastlines of this ancient landscape and the very real threats it faces from logging, mining and climate driven fire. His work documents not just the landscape but activists, burn scars and threatened species like the swift parrot, images built around conservation impact rather than likes.

In this episode Tim talks about the challenges of working full time while pursuing serious landscape and wildlife photography, how selling at markets helped him refine his personal style and curation, and why he believes the printed image is where photography's real power lies. He's also candid about careful location sharing and the responsibility that comes with photographing sensitive environments.
