  1. #96: Life-Changing Benefits of Quitting Cannabis: What Parents and Young Adults Need to Know

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

When parents tell me their adult child has no motivation, my next question is always: Do they use cannabis? In this episode, my guest Dr. Frank reveals the truth about cannabis use, cannabis addiction, and the life-changing benefits of quitting.

Dr. Frank is a chiropractic physician, a certified addiction peer recovery coach, and the founder of Addiction Mindset. He doesn't just know about cannabis, he lived through a serious addiction. It was only after a serious health scare that Dr. Frank decided it was enough. He also knew how much better his life could be, even though he was already successful.

Today, he has helped thousands of people break the habit.

This episode is for parents of young adults who regularly use cannabis, and for young adults themselves who are ready to take an honest look at their addiction, break the habit for good and significantly improve the quality of their life.

  2. #95: The Conversation Every Parent of a Struggling Adult Child Must Have

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Today’s episode is a topic that almost every parent with an adult child who is not moving forward needs to hear, which is why I want to talk about it. And yes, it’s just me.

This is by far one of the hardest conversations you'll ever have.

Sitting down with your adult child to talk about the way they've been living and that it can no longer continue makes parents very uncomfortable because of the reactions they know they’re going to get.

But you can’t avoid this discussion any longer. Or perhaps, it’s time to revisit it again, only differently.

I’ll share what you shouldn’t say and what you can say that will help set things in motion. I’ll be honest, this conversation is only the beginning. The follow through is where the work begins.

If you feel you need help, let’s do this together. With your adult child, too. Reach out. I’m easy to find and easier to talk to.

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

How many times have you tried to make changes with your adult child but could never follow through? Something would happen and you'd back down. You had the best intentions, your mind was made up, but you couldn't deal with their reaction, and you buckled.

After speaking with many parents, there are 3 concerns that come up repeatedly and in this episode, I talk about about what they are and what needs to happen before you begin setting new boundaries, expressing your expectations, changing the financial arrangements, and so on.

It's common for most adult children who are struggling to launch to become angry, withdraw or resist, but that shouldn't stop you. You need to be ready for it.

This mini episode will help you realize that your adult child's responses cannot get in the way of their growth and it's what you can manage that will determine how successful these changes will be.

  5. #92: Rethinking Your Adult Child’s Trauma and Mental Health | Is Therapy Culture Keeping Them Stuck?

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

What if some of what we’ve been taught about mental health, trauma and therapy is actually making our adult children more fragile and keeping them stuck?

Today I’m joined by Dr. Richard Blake, a British psychologist PhD, researcher, author and breathwork expert whose work challenges some of the assumptions we’ve come to accept about mental health and trauma.

We talk about therapy culture and the stories we tell ourselves about our mental health, and whether we may have taken the wrong approach to understanding psychological distress.

Richard’s perspective really challenges our thinking, and I personally found his approach a breath of fresh air.

  6. #91: Trigger Warning: Will Every "Failing to Launch" Adult Child Launch?

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

This episode may be uncomfortable for some parents to hear.

If your adult child is in their 20s or 30s and still living at home, not working, not studying, not contributing, or showing little direction for their future, you may have asked yourself:

“What can I do if they don’t want to change?”

If you’re parenting an adult child who is struggling with independence, motivation, responsibility, confidence, or launching into adulthood, you may also be dealing with enabling, rescuing, tolerating, making excuses, being disrespected, of living in fear and of doing things for them they can do for themselves.

This episode takes a closer look at what happens when parents reach this point and begin wondering what they can do next if they really want their adult child to launch.

But be warned: this one may hit a nerve. 🐦

  7. #90: When Should Parents of Adult Children Stop Being Supportive?

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

For parents of adult children who are struggling to launch, support can quietly turn into enabling and enabling becomes disabling.

If you have an adult child living at home, not working, not in school, or not moving toward independence, you've probably told yourself you're being supportive. Paying bills. Managing setbacks. Handling stressful situations for them. Sending job postings. Giving them space. Avoiding uncomfortable conversations. Letting them do whatever they want - even when it's unhealthy: like endless hours of YouTube, gaming all night, sleeping all day, eating poorly, never leaving the house. If you're not doing anything about it, you're supporting it.

In this episode, we explore the difference between support and enabling for parents of adult children in their 20s and 30s and what happens when support turns into a pattern that keeps them in place instead of moving them forward. We talk about fear-based parenting, boundaries with adult children, and how to tell whether the support you're offering is actually about your child, or about managing your own emotions.

By the end, you'll have a clearer, more constructive way to think about what real support for a struggling adult child looks like - one that moves them toward feeling confident, capable, and independent.

  12. #85: Do You Have an Orchid Child? 3 Ways to Help Sensitive Adult Children LAUNCH

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Ever wonder why one of your adult children is struggling to LAUNCH while your other child (or children) seem to be doing fine?

You parented them the same, right? Wrong.

The truth is, you couldn't have.

Because your children didn't come to you the same. They're genetically different which means they experience the world differently, respond to challenges differently, and needed different things from you as they grew.

Realizing this can completely change the way you understand your adult child

Some are biologically more sensitive to change, uncertainty, and the challenges of life. They need a new approach especially for launching into adulthood.

But understanding your adult child doesn't mean protecting them from every challenge. It means learning how to guide them in a way that helps them build confidence, resilience, and independence.

In this episode, you'll discover why some adult children struggle more than others to move forward and the three things you can do to help your sensitive adult child take the necessary steps.

Because the goal isn't to change who your child is.

The goal is to understand who they are and help them blossom (hint, hint) into the adult they are capable of becoming.

I'm excited for you to listen to this episode.

  13. #84: Stop Trying So Hard | A Simpler Way to Connect With Your Adult Child

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

What if helping your young adult move forward didn’t require more rules, more demands or difficult conversations? What if it was actually simpler than that?

In this episode, I’m joined by Geoff Owen, founder of Biologically Aligned Parenting and author of The Parenting Assumption. Geoff challenges one of the biggest assumptions we make as parents: that it’s our job to manage and control our children’s behaviour.

His perspective is both refreshing and surprisingly simple. He believes that when we stop trying to control our young adults, we create the conditions for connection to emerge naturally.

If parenting has become exhausting in your home, this conversation may completely change the way you think about helping your young adult move forward.

Maybe the answer isn’t doing more, but doing less. Geoff’s message is simple: parenting doesn’t have to feel like a constant struggle.

Listen in and decide for yourself.

  14. #83: Failure to Launch Explained | 5 Tips to Help Your Adult Child Move Forward

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Failure to Launch is one of the most widely used terms to describe young adults who are not progressing toward independence, but what does it really mean, who does it apply to and where did the term come from?

In this episode, I talk deconstruct Failure to Launch, as I take you through the history of it, from early research in Europe during the 1980s to Japan’s phenomenon of hikikomori and the rise of the term in popular culture.

You’ll learn why Failure to Launch is not a permanent label, why terms like “lost” and “stuck” may not accurately describe what’s happening, and why this challenging stage for young adults has existed for decades.

I also highlight the work of psychologist Dr. Mark McConville, author of Failure to Launch: Why Your Twentysomething Hasn’t Grown Up...and What to Do About It, whose book became an important contribution to understanding this growing conversation. I’m excited to have Dr. McConville joining me on a future episode where we’ll explore this topic even further.

Most importantly, I’ll share 5 practical tips to help your adult child move forward, including how to change the dynamic of your relationship, stop enabling, set healthy consequences, and become the parent they need now.

If you’ve ever felt stigmatized by the term Failure to Launch, wondered what you can do to help them move through this stage, this episode is for you.

  15. #82: Advice from a Developmental Psychologist: How to Help Your Young Adult Thrive in Today’s Challenging World

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

My guest today is Dr. Isabela Granic, a professor, psychologist, and developmental researcher with 25 years of experience studying what young people need to thrive. She’s also a parent of two young adult children and the founder and CEO of Liminal Learning, an innovative program designed to help young adults develop the social skills, confidence, responsibility, and a sense of purpose they need to navigate adulthood.

Even though we're talking about the program at the start, Dr. Granic offers incredible suggestions for parents to reconnect with their adult children and help them to thrive. As always, it's closer to the end of the episode. Please don't miss this invaluable advice. You'll leave feeling as though you can do something.

I'm really excited to share this conversation with you because I believe Liminal Learning is incredible, and so is Dr. Granic.

  16. #81: What CONSEQUENCES Can I Give My Adult Child Who Doesn’t Do Anything I Ask?

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Every once in a while, I release an episode that needs no introduction.

And this is one of them.

It's the number one issue that every parent with a struggling adult child living at home has no idea how to handle.

They honestly believe that there are absolutely no consequences that would stick.

That level of disrespect is so telling. They aren't bad kids. Nor are they lazy. There's a bigger problem and I talk about it in this episode.

But more than that, I explain everything you need to know about consequences and what you can do to create your own.

Please share this episode with any parent that struggles with this. Remember to hit the follow button, and while you're here, I'd be so grateful if you could rate the podcast and leave a positive review.

As always, thank you for joining me.

  17. #80: Stop Supporting Your Stay-at-Home Adult Child

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

If you've been doing everything for your adult child and their lifestyle hasn't changed, in fact nothing about their life has really improved, it's time you stop supporting them.

No, you don't have to kick them out. Unless of course circumstances have become so unbearable at home, and they seem completely uninterested in being responsible and respectful, which means you're setting a move-out date.

If that's the case, don't feel bad. Many parents are at that point.

But if you're not there yet and you still feel hopeful that your son or daughter can become fully independent, while living at home, than you just need a new approach. And today's episode is going to introduce you to one.

This is another mini episode with just me sharing something that has been on my mind. There's a word that is so overused that it is now misunderstood. And we need to reconsider a new perspective and approach.

By the end, I'll give you an exact statement for you to say to your adult child that could pave the way for their future.

  18. #79: Repairing the Parent-Adult Child Relationship: Small Changes Make the Biggest Differences

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

This is a much needed episode and I'm excited to share it with you along with my guest Andie Toderovitz, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) who specializes in relationship issues, attachment styles, and emotional well-being. Andie helps individuals of all ages develop greater self-awareness and build deeper, more meaningful connections.

Although most parents with struggling young adults tend to focus on fixing their adult child - the unemployment, the lack of motivation, the disconnection from life, there's a deeper truth that often explains why they have stalled.

It's the parent and adult child dynamic and until that relationship is healed, nothing changes.

Which is why this episode is so important. Andie introduces us to Esther Perel's three hidden dimensions of conflict that arise when relationships are in need of repair: power and control, care and closeness, and respect and recognition.

She shares with us what the warning signs look like in each area, and offers incredible suggestions to help parents restore and repair the relationship so their adult child can finally begin to move forward.

  19. #78: A New Perspective: Seeing Your Adult Child Through a Different Lens

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

When an adult child is struggling, most parents focus on the most obvious problem: no motivation, lack of employment, low self confidence, complete dependence, zero responsibilities, poor communication…

But what if you’re looking too narrowly?

In this episode, I introduce a different perspective for parenting your young adult, one that looks beyond a single issue and considers the whole person.

Discover why emotional well-being, mental health, relationships, life skills, self-confidence, purpose, and family dynamics are all connected, and how seeing your adult child through a different lens can transform the way you support, guide, and communicate with them.

Sometimes the most powerful change starts with a new perspective.

    Show notes

This episode could be a recurring one because it is the MOST important topic in raising children, and that say a lot.

As powerful as it is, a majority of parents struggle with it because they were raised by a generation who didn’t understand how to apply these principles.

But once you do, and you can, the floodgates will open. Your relationship with your adult children will change. They’ll feel heard, understood and safe to open up to you.

It’s a short episode today. But I think it packs a punch. It’s the one topic you can’t put off.

    Nothing matters more.

To those of you who are letting me know that you're starting to see progress, because you're changing your approach, I'm SO excited for you. You didn't give up, even though you were frustrated and worried. And now, the future is looking a bit brighter.
