Not Motivated to Market Your Law Practice?
Season 6, Episode 250
Show notes
You became a lawyer to do meaningful work, and that still matters to you. But lately, the work has been hard. And it’s bleeding into your business development. You’re just not motivated to market your law practice, even though you know you need to do more of it.
Before forcing yourself to just “do it” through sheer discipline, get clear on what’s behind your lack of motivation and reconnect with what can motivate you, especially during difficult law practice seasons.
Because discipline can only get you so far. Listen to today’s episode to learn (1) how to identify whether disconnection from your deeper why is affecting your motivation for legal marketing, (2) how to reconnect with that deeper why, and (3) what else to consider if that doesn’t help.RECOMMENDED EPISODES:

Be the Lawyer Clients Call Before Problems Start (aka the Trusted Advisor)
Season 6, Episode 249
Show notes
Want clients to call you sooner (before issues/problems get out of hand)? Wish they would discuss operational decisions that aren’t purely operational (but have a legal impact)? Want to be involved in clients’ long-term planning? This is what being a trusted advisor to your client is all about. And the benefits are many (and no, it’s not about doing “more work” for them, although that often does happen).
Becoming a trusted advisor to your clients is about being their partner. Not just their legal partner, but a someone who is necessary to their business because:
- You understand the client's goals before recommending legal action.
- You’re better equipped to identify risks while the client still has time to respond.
- You’re able to connect legal issues to business priorities, cost, timing, and reputation.Bottom line: Your clients will make better business decisions (with better timing). Risk is reduced. Money is saved.
Listen to today’s episode to find out my blueprint for becoming a trusted advisor to your clients.

Lawyer Self-Advocacy: How to Speak Up, Stand Out
Season 6, Episode 246
Show notes
Lawyers are great at advocating for clients, yet most are terrible at self-advocacy. We need to do better for ourselves. I rarely use the word “should”, but this is one of the times when I make an exception. Self-advocacy is necessary for building a successful and (more importantly) enjoyable legal career.
Tune into today’s episode to learn why lawyers tend to be bad at self-advocacy, the necessary mindset shift to begin building this skill, and a simple framework for lawyer self-advocacy that works.

Law Firm Operations: How to Get Hours Back Every Week Through Structure
Season 6, Episode 245
Show notes
Law firm operations might sound like a “boring” topic. But what if I told you that having the right structure in place can save you hours each week? What if I told you that this is key to creating a more balanced life? Those two results are definitely not boring. That's exactly what we get into today on Life & Law. Tune into my conversation with Shireen Hilal to learn why moving away from a "person-centric" system to a "process-centric" structure within your law firm (or practice group) will (a) improve how your law firm operates and (b) give you more hours back each week.
Inside today’s episode, you’ll learn:
- How law firm leaders and partners become the bottleneck, making it impossible to step away or achieve balance.
- How systems improve law firm operations, increase employee engagement and improve client service.
- How to implement flexible systems, tailored to client needs, business risk, and unique legal issues.

Stop Hating Law Firm Politics (It's Part of Leadership)
Season 6, Episode 244
Show notes
“I hate law firm politics. I don’t like playing games.” Said a client.
This is a common sentiment (I hear often from clients).
But what if what you're calling ‘politics’ is simply what happens when a group of humans with different experiences, priorities, personalities, values, and agendas work together? And what if, by ignoring all the political stuff, you’re actually hurting yourself (not merely staying above the fray)?
Join me to learn how to shift your mindset around law firm politics so you can navigate your law firm's politics authentically and effectively (without any gamesmanship).

Legal Billing: The Cost of Not Billing Regularly
Season 6, Episode 243
Show notes
If you think legal billing is just an administrative or collections issue, you're missing something important. How often (and even more importantly, how) you bill your clients impacts more than whether you get paid. It impacts how much you collect, client trust, and whether or not a client will continue sending work your way. Listen to today's episode to learn why that is and how to bill in a way that builds trust with clients (hint: there's more to it than just sending a pretty, well narrated bill).

Values Alignment Isn't Safe (That's the Point): Let's Talk About Antisemitism
Season 5, Episode 240
Show notes
I talk a lot about values alignment (aligning your law practice to your values). But what, precisely, does that look like in practice? Here's the thing: Values that cost you nothing probably aren't values — they're just words you aren't really standing behind. Yet the cost is worth it. Because NOT aligning to your values costs something, too.
That's why I was immediately drawn to Ariella Cohen Coleman. She's a lawyer who built a values-aligned law firm and a nonprofit to support the Jewish community. She speaks openly about antisemitism. Even if it makes others uncomfortable. Even though it could cost her something. She is the real thing.
This conversation is about so much:
- What it actually takes to build a values-aligned practice.
- Lawyer wellbeing (and why it's related to peak performance).
- The responsibility lawyers have to speak up about antisemitism (and the role we can play to change course). This conversation is powerful. It's important. Be sure to listen.
