Sexual Predators, College Campus Sexual Assault & The Systems Protecting Powerful Men | Dr. Caroline Heldman
Show notes
What happens when the people and institutions meant to protect us become part of the problem?
In this powerful and unsettling episode of lovelustlaw, Attorney Michele Locke sits down with scholar-activist Dr. Caroline Heldman to investigate the disturbing realities behind sexual violence, institutional betrayal, and a culture that too often protects powerful men at the expense of survivors.
From the college campus “Red Zone,” where SAs spike during the first weeks of the academic year, to the calculated manipulation of vulnerable young women through alcohol, coercion, and power imbalances, Heldman exposes the patterns that make sexual violence so difficult to prevent, and even harder to report. Why do so many survivors remain silent? What happens when universities turn sexual assault protections into political battlegrounds? And who benefits when accountability disappears?
But the investigation doesn't stop on campus.
Locke and Heldman venture into the darker corners of the internet, examining how the manosphere and incel culture prey on insecure boys, normalize misogyny, and turn resentment into an ideology. They explore the disturbing intersections of online exploitation, pornography, trafficking, and platforms that profit from a system where consent and safety can become secondary to money.
The conversation takes another unsettling turn as they examine celebrity culture and the music industry's longstanding relationship with power, exploitation, and alleged predatory behavior, including the public reckoning surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Drawing on Heldman's personal experience as a survivor and decades of research into gender, power, and sexual violence, this episode challenges the myths that protect perpetrators and the institutions that enable them. They also confront an uncomfortable truth: patriarchy doesn't just endanger women. It teaches boys and men to suppress vulnerability, equate masculinity with dominance, and measure their worth through power.

Nichole Schmidt on Gabby Petito’s Legacy: Domestic Violence Awareness, Coercive Control & A Mother's Mission To Save Lives
Show notes
What can we learn from Gabby Petito’s story to help recognize dangerous behavior
in relationships?Michele Locke sits down with Nichole Schmidt, Gabby Petito’s mother, to discuss the devastating impact of losing her daughter – and how her family is turning unimaginable grief into meaningful action.
Nichole opens up about the emotional toll of repeatedly sharing Gabby’s story, the importance of setting boundaries while navigating trauma, and the coping tools that help her keep going, including meditation, breathwork, and taking time to step away. She also reflects on co-parenting Gabby with her father and how they have come together through the Gabby Petito Foundation to honor their daughter’s legacy.
Michele and Nichole explore the warning signs of abusive relationships, including coercive control, isolation, love bombing, future faking, and the dangerous escalation of abuse. They examine why it can be so difficult to recognize these behaviors from inside a relationship, the reasons asking “why didn’t she leave?” places blame in the wrong place, and why understanding the dynamics of abuse is essential to prevention.
Nichole also shares the mission behind the Gabby Petito Foundation, which works to educate young people about healthy relationships and dating violence, train law enforcement officers and 911 dispatchers, advocate for lethality assessment laws, provide scholarships, and support families of missing people whose cases may otherwise receive limited attention. The conversation highlights the urgent need for stronger training, accessible resources, trauma-informed responses, and early education that empowers people to recognize red flags before abuse escalates.
This episode is a reminder that domestic violence prevention requires more than recognizing the signs. It requires compassion, informed intervention, meaningful support, and a willingness to listen without judgment. No one should have to navigate abuse alone, and no family should have to fight to have their loved one’s story heard.
In this episode, we discuss:
— The emotional realities of grief, trauma, and sharing a loved one’s story publicly.
— The warning signs of coercive control, love bombing, future faking, and isolation.
— Strangulation and other indicators associated with escalating danger in abusive relationships.
— Why leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated and why victim-blaming must stop.
— Lethality assessments, legislative advocacy, and gaps in domestic violence response systems.
— Teaching children and young adults about boundaries, healthy relationships, and personal safety.
— The work of the Gabby Petito Foundation and how education can help prevent future tragedies.
— Supporting missing-person cases, standing alongside families, and approaching survivors with empathy.

After the Mansion: Crystal Harris on Coercive Control, Trauma & Finding Freedom after Playboy
Show notes
Behind the glamour of the Playboy Mansion, Crystal Harris describes a life shaped by rigid rules, curfews, financial restrictions, and a struggle to reclaim her independence. In this powerful episode of LoveLustLaw, attorney and host Michele Locke sits down with Crystal for an unflinching conversation about coercive control, the lasting effects of trauma, and the complicated journey toward healing.
Crystal reflects on how her childhood experiences and the early loss of her father shaped her vulnerability, why it took years to recognize and name the dynamics she experienced, and how public scrutiny and bullying made it even harder to tell her story. Together, Michele and Crystal examine the contrast between the mansion’s glamorous public image and what Crystal describes as a world where personal freedom could feel painfully out of reach.
But Crystal’s story is also one of determination and self-reclamation. She shares how brand deals, DJ work, and real estate investments helped her build financial independence while still at the mansion, ultimately creating a path toward a life of her own. She also opens up about caring for Hugh Hefner during his final years, navigating grief, and facing criticism from people who were not there to experience her reality firsthand.
In This Episode, We Discuss:

— Reclaiming financial independence: How brand deals, DJ work, and real estate investments helped Crystal build a path toward freedom.
— Caretaking, grief, and complicated relationships: Crystal’s experience caring for Hugh Hefner during his decline and the emotions surrounding his final years.
— Healing and rediscovering identity: Moving beyond trauma, rebuilding self-trust, and learning to embrace a new chapter in life.
— The power of storytelling: Why Crystal wants to share her experiences and create space for others to tell their stories.
— Introducing After the Mansion: Crystal’s upcoming podcast featuring former Playmates, staff, and others sharing both the lighter and darker sides of life connected to the Playboy Mansion. Now embracing a new chapter in Hawaii, Crystal is turning her experiences into a platform for honest conversations with her upcoming podcast, After the Mansion. Through stories that span the full spectrum of experiences, she hopes to bring previously unheard perspectives to light and encourage more open conversations about control, trauma, and healing.

Michele Locke sits down for another conversation with advocate Bill Mitchell, whose devastating loss transformed into a lifelong mission to educate others about dating violence and domestic abuse.
Bill shares how his family’s tragedy inspired his work with survivors and his podcast, When Dating Hurts, where survivors tell their stories of abuse, control, survival, and healing. Together, Michele and Bill explore why sharing these stories matters - and how hearing someone else’s experience can help a person recognize that they are not alone.

Michele and Bill discuss why “just leave” is rarely as simple as it sounds, the importance of creating a personalized safety plan, and how domestic violence professionals can help survivors prepare for a safer path forward. They also explore how friends and family can provide meaningful support without judgment, pressure, or shame. Bill Mitchell’s When Dating Hurts podcast and domestic violence support organizations can provide additional education and resources for those seeking help.

Coercive Control Explained: Lindsay Clancy and Death of a Pastor's Wife
Show notes
What does coercive control look like when there are no visible bruises? How can power, religion, sexuality, mental health, isolation, and public perception become part of an abusive dynamic? And what happens when highly publicized cases are tried not only in courtrooms, but online?
In this episode of LoveLustLaw, Attorney Michele Locke is joined by the Dirty Laundry Podcast Hosts Amanda Silver and Alex Howard, for a candid and wide-ranging conversation about coercive control, domestic abuse, mental health, faith, and the challenges of judging complicated cases from the outside.
Using Netflix’s Death of a Pastor’s Wife and the Lindsay Clancy case as starting points, the conversation explores what these cases can – and cannot – tell us about the hidden dynamics that can exist behind closed doors.
In this episode, we discuss:
— What coercive control actually looks like and why abuse isn't always physical.
— The allegations and relationship dynamics portrayed in Death of a Pastor’s Wife, including alleged grooming, sexual coercion, isolation, triangulation, public shaming, stalking, and cyberstalking.
— The intersection of religion and power, including concerns about spiritual authority being used to influence intimate relationships and divorce decisions.
— How shame, sexual expectations, and religious teachings can potentially become tools of control.
— Mental health as a potential battleground, including allegations and questions surrounding diagnoses, treatment, medication, and who has influence over someone's care.
— Why post-separation periods can be especially complicated, and the importance of safety planning when someone is attempting to leave a controlling relationship.
— The importance of preserving texts, emails, recordings, social media posts, medical information, and other evidence when documenting concerning behaviour.
— Legal developments surrounding coercive control, including Canada's emerging recognition of family violence involving coercive and controlling behavior.
— The Lindsay Clancy trial, including the hung jury and the public debate surrounding mental health, postpartum crisis, and criminal responsibility.
— Questions surrounding Patrick Clancy, the family's timeline and support system, and the limits of what the public can know from media coverage.
— The significance of sealed evidence, including the 911 recording, and why missing pieces of evidence can make public conclusions especially difficult.
— The danger of turning tragedy into an online courtroom, and why “keyboard warrior” judgment can do more harm than good.
— How we can replace speculation and condemnation with curiosity, compassion, practical support, and constructive conversation.
These cases have generated enormous public attention, but the bigger conversation is about something that happens far beyond the headlines: how people recognize coercive control, how victims seek help, how families and professionals respond, and how the legal system addresses behavior that may not leave obvious physical evidence.
Michele, Amanda, and Alex also discuss an important question: What can we actually learn from these cases without pretending we know everything that happened behind closed doors?

In this deeply personal episode of LoveLustRaw, Michele opens up about the moments that changed her life, and the women who helped remind her that starting over is possible.
Michele takes us from a hilarious and wildly awkward restaurant encounter into the much more vulnerable story behind her transformation. She reflects on once weighing nearly 300 pounds, undergoing gastric sleeve surgery, using Zepbound, and later having a 360 tummy tuck and inner thigh lift. Her transformation also involved two knee replacements, an ankle replacement, and three cervical fusions which allowed her to leave the sidelines and finally get back into the game of life. Along the way, Michele discovered that losing weight didn't automatically mean loving the woman in the mirror. Michele talks candidly about body dysmorphia, weight-loss plateaus, changing confidence, and the reality of “skinny privilege.”
Then comes the harder story: after 22 years of marriage, Michele made the decision to leave in March 2024. She shares what escalating conflict, emotional strain, and controlling behavior felt like, and how the stress affected her physical health, including severe anemia and dangerously high blood pressure.
Leaving wasn't the end of the story. It was the beginning of Michele finding herself again.
She talks about rebuilding her health, rediscovering confidence, finding laughter and joy, and learning to give herself grace for the choices she made while simply trying to survive.
Michele also pays tribute to a few of the women who inspired her. The most important influence came from her mother, Margo, whose strength shaped Michele from an early age and showed her how to survive anything life throws your way. To her mother Michele says “Thank You.”
Michele also discusses more recent women that have been inspirations on her rebuilding journey post divorce. Women like Mackenzie Fultz aka Freedom Barbie, whose public journey and physical transformation have inspired her, and Brett Butler, a pioneering female comedian whose story and resilience have made an indelible mark on Michele’s journey of rebuilding, rediscovering, and finding joy again.

The Bedroom Problem That Starts Outside the Bedroom: Marriage, Intimacy & Connection
Show notes
What happens when a major fight, a career setback, and a question at a funeral force you to take an honest look at the life you're building?
In this episode of LoveLustLaw, Michele Locke sits down with Mitchell Osmond of Dad Nation for a powerful conversation about marriage, personal transformation, emotional connection, and intimacy.
Mitchell shares how losing a senior leadership role sent him into a difficult season of depression, weight gain, debt, and substance use. After a major fight with his wife—and a powerful question at a funeral, “Are you living a life worthy of imitation?”—he began an 18-month journey that included losing 60 pounds, paying off $100,000 in debt, getting sober, and rebuilding his marriage.
Michele and Mitchell also explore why couples become emotionally disconnected, how communication breakdowns can contribute to marital conflict, why men can struggle to identify and express emotions, practical ways couples can create greater intimacy and emotional safety, and introduce Mitchell's Attraction Triangle: Seen, Heard, Safe.
Key Takeaways
• Seen: Appreciation, acknowledgement, and affection.
• Heard: Use the Mirror → Summarize → Clarify active-listening loop.
• Safe: Build physical, financial, relational, and emotional security.
• Understand why emotional connection can matter more than simply trying to “solve” a problem.
• Learn how vulnerability and transparency can strengthen trust.
• Explore why respect and feeling valued can be especially important to men.
• Discover the “microwave vs. oven” analogy for intimacy.
• Try asking: “Do you want me to listen, or do you want me to help fix it?”**DISCLAIMER** The information shared in this podcast is intended for entertainment purposes only. It should not be considered as professional legal advice or a substitute for seeking professional legal advice.

Lindsay Clancy Trial Analysis: Insanity Defense, Reasonable Doubt & Justice: Part 1
Show notes
One juror. One holdout. No verdict.
What happens when 11 jurors reportedly believe a defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity, while one juror refuses to agree?
In this episode of LoveLustLaw, Attorney Michele Locke takes a closer look at the Lindsay Clancy trial and the legal and human questions left behind by a hung jury.
Michele brings a unique perspective shaped by experience as a criminal defense attorney, magistrate, criminal jury foreman, and 22 years married to a highly regarded prosecutor who handled capital murder cases.
She breaks down the insanity defense, reasonable doubt, jury deliberations, juror questions, and the Allen charge, while examining what the reported 11–1 split can - and cannot - tell us about the case. She also discusses the father's emotional 911 call and why the judge's decision to restrict its public release matters.
But beyond the courtroom lies an even harder question: What does justice look like when severe mental illness, postpartum mental health, and an unimaginable crime collide?
After a hung jury, is a retrial the right path - or does justice require something more?
This is not just a conversation about a verdict. It’s a conversation about accountability, mental health, compassion, and what justice really means.
**This episode contains discussions of child murder, assault, child abuse. Listener discretion is advised.

AI and Digital Stalking: How to Protect Your Privacy and Stay Safe | Alan Silberberg
Show notes
What happens when AI, surveillance technology, and high-conflict relationships collide?
In this eye-opening episode, Michele Locke is joined by cybersecurity expert Alan Silberberg and correspondent Jake Deptula for a candid conversation about AI, digital privacy, cybersecurity, and digital stalking, and what you can do to protect yourself.
AI can be an extraordinary tool, but it can also make it easier to impersonate, manipulate, surveil, harass, and deceive. From fake texts and spoofed emails to forged signatures, spyware, location tracking, and misinformation, technology is changing the landscape of divorce, family law, business disputes, and personal safety.
The good news? You don't have to be a cybersecurity expert to reduce your risk.
They discuss AI’s growing role in legal research, fraud, spoofing, identity manipulation, and high-conflict relationships, while examining Alan’s four levels of AI, from consumer tools to government-scale tracking.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why AI should be a starting point not an authority
- How AI is changing stalking, fraud, and digital manipulation
- Alan's four levels of AI and surveillance
- How your phone, car, apps, and connected devices contribute to your digital footprint
- Why public Wi-Fi, QR codes, Bluetooth, and AirDrop can create privacy risks
- How Faraday bags and boxes can help protect certain devices
- Practical digital hygiene habits for adults, families, and businesses
- What parents should teach kids about privacy and digital reputation.**DISCLAIMER** The information shared in this podcast is intended for entertainment purposes only. It should not be considered as professional legal advice or a substitute for seeking professional legal advice.

P*rn, Power & Perception: Censorship, Double Standards & the Fight to Be Heard feat. Ryan Keely
Show notes
What happens when SW collides with censorship, financial restrictions, and deeply rooted social stigma? In this compelling episode of LoveLustLaw, attorney Michele Locke sits down with media personality, writer, and adult performer Ryan Keely for a candid conversation about the realities of working in today’s adult industry, and the systems that continue to shape who gets heard, paid, and protected.
Ryan reflects on her evolution in the industry, from the pre-social-media era to today’s highly regulated digital landscape, where platform restrictions, payment policies, and censorship can make earning a living increasingly difficult. Together, Michele and Ryan unpack the double standards faced by SWers and question why adult creators are often denied opportunities routinely available to other online creators.
The conversation also examines the growing influence of financial institutions and policies that restrict adult content, the unintended consequences of censorship, and the ways these measures can push SWers into more vulnerable circumstances.
Beyond the industry itself, Michele and Ryan challenge common assumptions about pornography and relationships, including the notion that consuming p*rn*graphy is inherently a form of infidelity, a particularly consequential issue in high-conflict divorces and family law disputes.

When Dating Hurts: Dating Violence, Coercive Control & Relationship Red Flags | Bill Mitchell
Show notes
How can we recognize the warning signs of dating violence, coercive control, emotional abuse, and dangerous relationship patterns before it’s too late?
In this powerful episode of lovelustlaw, Michele Locke sits down with Bill Mitchell, author and host of the When Dating Hurts podcast, to explore the hidden realities of intimate partner violence and the warning signs that are often missed.
Bill’s mission began after the devastating murder of his 21-year-old daughter, Kristin, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2005 shortly after graduating from college. Bill shares Kristin’s story, the impact of her killer’s ongoing parole hearings on their family, and how unimaginable loss became a mission to educate others about dating violence and relationship abuse.
They discuss why abuse is hidden behind shame, isolation, and the appearance of a loving relationship and why there doesn’t have to be bruises for abuse to occur.
The conversation also explores relationship red flags, emotional abuse, strangulation, digital stalking, evidence collection, self-esteem and vulnerability, safely leaving an abusive relationship, healthy boundaries, and how parents can talk to their children about dating violence.
Bill outlines a common five-step “template” of abuse - fairy tale romance, isolation, threats, violence, and a convincing apology - repeating in cycles. They also discuss why victims may minimize what happened, why leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated and dangerous, and how friends, family members, educators, and communities can provide support without judgment.
Most importantly, this episode is about prevention: teaching young people what healthy relationships look like, recognizing red flags early, and knowing when control has crossed the line into abuse.
In This Episode:
— How dating violence and coercive control can begin
— The hidden warning signs of abusive relationships
— The five-step cycle of abuse
— Why emotional abuse can be just as traumatic as physical violence
— Isolation, shame, threats, and manipulation
— Strangulation and other serious warning signs
— Digital stalking and documenting evidence
— How predators use reward-and-punishment tactics
— Why self-esteem can affect vulnerability to abuse
— How to safely leave a dangerous relationship
— How parents can talk with kids about healthy relationships
— Why victims need patience and nonjudgmental support
— Men as victims of intimate partner violence
— Teaching boundaries and relationship skills early
— Resources for people experiencing domestic or dating violence**DISCLAIMER** The information shared in this podcast is intended for entertainment purposes only. It should not be considered as professional legal advice or a substitute for seeking professional legal advice.

Why Stalking Victims Struggle to Get Justice feat. Anna Nasset
Show notes
How do you rebuild your life when a stalker is determined to destroy it?
Michele Locke is joined by Stalking survivor, author, and advocate Anna Nasset who shares the terrifying reality of being stalked for years after opening an art gallery. What began as persistent emails and unwanted contact quickly escalated into threats, cyberstalking, and years of fear that ultimately forced her to close her business, leave her home, and rebuild her life across the country.
Against overwhelming odds, Anna helped achieve one of the rarest outcomes in stalking prosecutions. After years of documenting evidence and working with prosecutors, her stalker was convicted of aggravated felony stalking and felony cyberstalking in a landmark case. She also recounts the extraordinary experience of being cross-examined in court by the man who stalked her.
But this episode goes far beyond one survivor's story.
Anna explains why stalking remains one of the most misunderstood crimes, why victims often struggle to get protection, and how technology has made stalking easier than ever. She discusses safety planning, digital privacy, trauma, dating after abuse, and the lasting emotional, financial, and professional impact stalking has on survivors. She also shares how her experience inspired a new mission: training law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates, and organizations to better recognize stalking behaviors and protect victims before violence escalates.
Guest: Anna Nassett, Author of Now I Speak, international stalking expert, survivor advocate, trainer, and speaker.

Christopher Titus on a 12-Year Divorce Battle, Family Court Chaos, and How Comedy Saved Him
Show notes
Content/Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of murder, and attempted murder, suicide and suicide attempts, domestic violence and domestic violence allegations, child abuse and child abuse allegations, pet abuse and animal death. Listener discretion is advised.
Comedian Christopher Titus joins attorney and former family court judge Michele Locke for a candid conversation about the painful 12-year divorce battle that reshaped his life. After discovering his wife was sleeping with two other men and had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars, Titus filed for divorce on 6/6/06, setting off more than a decade of courtroom battles, 108 court appearances, false abuse allegations, costly forensic accounting, and frustration with attorneys who failed to present critical evidence.
He also opens up about the emotional toll of the ordeal, including experiencing suicidal thoughts while on tour and being removed from his own home.
Titus shares how his now wife, Rachel, became an unwavering source of support, helping reverse a ruling that once required him to pay his ex, into one that ultimately required his ex to pay him. He also explains the Richmond order that finally brought his alimony obligations to an end.
Drawing on her experience overseeing CPS and protective-order cases, Locke offers practical insight into how family courts evaluate evidence, issue temporary orders, and navigate parenting disputes. Together, they discuss the importance of playing the long game for the sake of children, the value of settlement when possible, and the lasting harm caused by turning kids against a parent.
The conversation also explores how comedy helped Titus transform trauma into connection, and why honesty and authenticity remain at the heart of both great storytelling and healing.
