Motherhood in ADHD – Parenting with ADHD, Productivity Tips, Brain based Science, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Productivity, Parenting, and Education for Moms with Adult ADHD

Are you overwhelmed by the never-ending to do list of motherhood? Are you burnt out and barely keeping your head above water? Are you confused and frustrated by how all the other moms make it look so easy? And somehow you're still floundering despite trying even harder...

Your purse is as overflowing as your mind, you never feel like a good enough mom, and you don't dare have anyone over to visit to witness your messy home. You just want the best for your kids, but you can't figure out how to manage the chaos, both in your mind and in your house.

Oh, I've been there, mama. Some days, I'm still there. Parenting with ADHD is hard!

We want to be structured for our kids, yet we can't seem to stay consistent even for ourselves. But I'm letting go of everyone else's perception of a "good mom" and stepping into loving who I am a little more each day. Will you join me?

Whether you have ADHD like I do, or think you might, here is your permission slip to let go of the pinterest worthy visions of organization and structure fit for everyone else. Let's do life like our brains do life: creatively, lovingly, and with all your might. Moms with ADHD have a superpower of always trying their best, even when it doesn't pan out.

How do I know? I have known about my ADD for over twenty years, and I want to share all of this hard-earned ADHD knowledge with you, making your adjustment a lot easier and faster than mine was.

What does Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder look like in women? We'll dive into emotional regulation, motivation, executive function, hormones, medication, and natural treatments. Women with ADHD share their diagnosis stories with us, whether inattentive, hyperactive or combined, from childhood through adult diagnoses. We also talk about ADHD's so-called friends like depression, anxiety, addiction, disordered eating, other learning differences, and what I've learned through therapy and CBT.

Science is my jam and learning about how our brains work through the lens of scientific research helps us understand who we are. ADHD is not just for little boys; it looks different in girls.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological medical condition, not an excuse for lazy, stupid, unmotivated people to not live up to our potential. Let's agree to throw that thought in the trash.

Once we understand how our brains work, we can dive into the practical strategies like structuring our day, minimalism, money, nurturing our relationships, daily rhythms, using a planner, and improving our sleep. I want to help you build your version of a joyful family life.

We talk about everything from ADHD to Zebras, because that is how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder works: to us, our thoughts are clearly connected, but non-linear to everyone else. I want you to love being a zebra in a world full of horses. We were born as unique, gorgeous creatures, not meant to blend in with the usual nor mundane.

When we embrace who we are and how our brains work, we can figure out how to live out lives successfully and in turn, lead our families well.

At the end of the day, we just want to be good moms. Spoiler alert: you are already a great mom.

If you're ready to see that with your own two eyes, hit play and listen in as we love ourselves a little more each day of our ADHD lives. ADHD does NOT mean you're doomed to be a hot mess, mama!

You CAN rewrite your story from shame spiral to success story, and I'll be right here beside you to cheer you on!

With love, Patricia Sung, a fellow mama with ADHD

  1. E289: Paris Hilton's ADHD Creator Summit: Sliving or Sus?: Unpopular Opinions

    Show notes

Ever wanted an invitation to something you weren't even sure you wanted to attend? Yep, me too.

When I saw Paris Hilton's ADHD Creator Summit, my first thought was, "How come I didn't get invited?" Then I realized I couldn't have gone anyway. But I still wanted the invite, because I want to feel included.

In this episode, I'm practicing speaking boldly and sharing my unpopular opinion about the summit's backlash. I'm talking about the sting of being left out, rejection sensitivity, and the expectations we put on other people to show up according to our values.

I wholeheartedly want more diversity and inclusion in ADHD spaces. And I'm glad someone took imperfect action to bring people together. Both things can be true.

We'll talk about holding that both/and, speaking up for what matters, and making room for improvement without letting perfectionism stop us from starting.

Plus, I'm sharing a peek behind the scenes of recording my audiobook. Find Motherhood and ADHD: Practical Strategies to Calm the Storm in Your Home, Heart, and Mind and preorder bonuses at patriciasung.com/book. Please order your copy this month!

  2. E288: Take the ADHD Medicine: Unpopular Opinions

    Show notes

What if I don't feel like myself? What if it makes things worse? What if I make the wrong choice for my kid?

If you've been afraid to try ADHD medication, I get it. The unknown is scary, and the horror stories don't help.

The next bold, unfiltered opinion of mine is this: Take the ADHD medicine. Talk to your doctor, ask your questions, and give yourself permission to explore a tool that could help.

In this episode, I share my own experience finding the generic medication that works best for me, why one disappointing experience doesn't mean every option will be a poor fit, and why I'd rather explore support before life becomes a dumpster fire.

Medicine isn't a magic fairy wand that takes your ADHD away. It is one great tool available to you. Finding a good fit can be frustrating. But fear doesn't have to make the decision for you.

Need help explaining your experiences to your doctor? My free ADHD symptoms checklist can help you put real-life examples into words. You can also find my book and preorder information at patriciasung.com/book.

Come listen, mama. You deserve support and room to ask questions while you figure out what works for you and your family.

  3. E287: Stop Saying Everyone Has ADHD: Unpopular Opinions

    Show notes

"Doesn't everyone have a little ADHD?" Ugh.

As a recovering people pleaser, I've spent a lot of my life keeping my opinions to myself. But I'm practicing speaking boldly, and I'm starting here: please stop saying everyone has a little ADHD.

In this short episode, I'm sharing an excerpt from my upcoming book and talking about the difference between occasionally losing your keys and a persistent struggle that creates compounding problems in your everyday life. We'll also talk about why ADHD can feel like it's everywhere when you look around.

When someone says "everyone does that", it can feel like your struggles aren't serious enough to deserve concern. But having a brain that works differently is hard, and you deserve to have that taken seriously.

If you're wondering whether you have ADHD or preparing to talk with your doctor, I'm also sharing my free ADHD symptoms checklist. It includes real-life examples and space to write your own, so you don't have to remember everything in the middle of your appointment.

If you've ever felt brushed off by the comment "everyone has a little ADHD", this conversation is for you.

  4. E286: Take the Easy Way Out: Unpopular Opinions

    Show notes

There are no trophies for making your life the most difficult. So why are we making things so hard for ourselves?

My unpopular opinion today: take the easy way out.

As a recovering people pleaser and perfectionist, I'm practicing sharing my opinions more boldly. And today's opinion is this one: you're already doing 700 things. Please make some of them easier.

In this short episode, I'm sharing why my purse stays by the door and why my kids buy school lunch. We'll also talk about how I let my older kids take responsibility when they want to pack their own lunch, instead of adding another thing to my morning.

When something feels difficult, ask yourself: "What's the easiest way I could do this?" It's not lazy. It's efficient. It's working with your brain.

I'm also sharing an update on my book, Motherhood and ADHD, coming out in February. If we reach 500 preordered copies by October 13, I'll draw one winner on October 14 for a spot at my Houston retreat the following weekend. Lodging, food, and activities are included; all you have to do is get here. Submit your receipt at https://patriciasung.com/book, with one entry per copy pre-ordered.

Come listen, mama. You're allowed to choose an easier way.

  5. E285: Tell Your Child They Have ADHD: Unpopular Opinions

    Show notes

Should you tell your kid they have ADHD?

My unpopular opinion: YES. This is a hill I will die upon.

We want to protect our kids. But when they're struggling and don't understand why, they start to believe they're the problem. They already know something feels different. Giving them a name for it helps them understand what's going on instead of blaming themselves.

In this episode, I'm practicing speaking boldly as a recovering people pleaser and perfectionist. I'm sharing why I feel so strongly about telling kids about their diagnosis. We'll talk about using words that fit your child's age and maturity, explaining what helps their brain, and reminding them that there are lots of us out here who learn and do things differently.

I also read a short passage from my upcoming book, Motherhood and ADHD. We don't need to pretend that feeling different is easy or cover it with toxic positivity. We can help our kids understand who they are and find support that fits.

Plus, I'm sharing my book preorder details, including a retreat giveaway if we reach 500 preorders by October 13, and a reminder that October 1st is the last day to register for the October 16–18 Successful As a Mother weekend retreat.

Come listen, mama. You don't need perfect words to help your child feel understood.

  7. E283: When Simple Questions Feel Like A Personal Attack: The Gas Tank Fight

    Show notes

Why does one tiny question sometimes feel like a full-body emotional attack?

In this episode, I'm walking you through a very ordinary moment that turned into a huge realization for me: my husband asking why my gas tank was almost empty. Not a fight. Not a disaster. Just a question. But internally? My brain immediately launched into anxiety, defensiveness, shame, overexplaining, and mental gymnastics before he even finished speaking.

And honestly, I think so many of us with ADHD do this all day long without even realizing it.

I'm sharing what came up for me emotionally, how old childhood narratives around being "careless" still show up in everyday situations, and the exact neuroplasticity exercise I'm practicing to change those automatic responses. We talk about slowing down your stress response, recognizing the physical sensations tied to anxiety, and intentionally replacing old shame-based beliefs with sturdier, kinder truths.

Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) does not have to rule your emotions! With time, I've shifted my responses so that I'm able to separate from roller coaster feelings.

This episode is deeply personal, practical, and validating for anyone who feels exhausted from constantly preparing to defend themselves. You are not broken, Mama. Your brain learned patterns, and your brain can learn new ones, too.

  8. E282: How Neuroplasticity in ADHD Coaching Can Feel Like Magic

    Show notes

I need your help. Have you ever tried to explain something life-changing… and somehow it still feels impossible to put into words?

That's where I found myself after several coaching sessions that completely transformed how my clients saw themselves, their work, and their lives. One client untangled burnout and learned how to rest without guilt. Another stopped spiraling around work procrastination. Another finally separated her own inner voice from years of criticism she'd been carrying around for decades.

And honestly? Sometimes even I step back and think, "How did we just do that in less than an hour?"

In this episode, I'm sharing the analogy I use to explain what ADHD coaching actually feels like. If you've ever felt emotionally overloaded, mentally tangled, or like you're dragging invisible baggage everywhere you go, this conversation is for you. I talk about why ADHD brains need different strategies, how I help clients rearrange the "bags" they're carrying, and why so much of this work is about letting go of weight you were never supposed to carry alone.

I'm not sure if the analogy fully encompasses how I want to describe neuroplasticity in ADHD coaching, but I would love to know if it makes more sense to you now that you've listened to this explanation.

This episode is part practical ADHD strategy, part emotional unpacking, and part permission slip to stop carrying everything the hardest way possible.

  9. E281: Quick Tricks to Organize and Reduce the Doom Piles

    Show notes

"How do I reduce the number of doom boxes, doom drawers, and doom cupboards in my life?" –Mama T asks.

Doom piles are the junk spots for things you don't know how to categorize or put away, so the junk just lives in the pile for months or years, as you shuffle it from one area to another until you get fed up!

If your doom drawers, doom boxes, and mystery piles are quietly multiplying around the house, you are definitely not alone. In this episode of Your Questions Answered, I'm sharing a practical and compassionate approach to dealing with clutter when your ADHD brain gets stuck in overwhelm and decision fatigue.

Instead of seeing doom piles as proof that you're failing, I'm reframing them for what they really are: unmade decisions. And honestly, that shift alone can take a little weight off your shoulders.

Let's walk through my simple system for sorting doom piles into categories like things that already have a home, things that need action, and things you genuinely don't know what to do with yet. You'll hear real-life examples from my own home, encouragement to stop expecting perfection, and permission to create systems that actually fit your life instead of fighting against your brain.

Plus, some "doom spaces" might actually deserve to exist permanently, so let's talk about why, and how having a plan removes so much of the guilt and shame tied to clutter.

This episode hopefully feels like sitting with a friend who gently helps you sort through the chaos one basket at a time

    Episode 280

    Show notes

Have you ever made a mistake and immediately spiraled into shame? Like, "What is wrong with me!?!" Because, same. Except… this time was different.

In this episode, I'm sharing a very real (and slightly painful) story about accidentally taking my stimulant medication before bed. Yup, that was rough. But instead of going down the usual shame and guilt spiral, something surprising happened – I gave myself grace.

And that moment? It's exactly why this year's retreat theme is "You Are Enough."

We're talking about what it looks like to stop beating yourself up, to drop the constant pressure to be perfect, and to finally feel at home in who you are – mistakes and all.

I'm also giving you all the details for the upcoming 5th annual Successful As a Mother Retreat on October 16-18, 2026: who it's for, what we'll do, and why this weekend might be exactly what you've been craving.

If you're tired of carrying the mental load, tired of feeling like you never quite "get it right," and just want a space where you can breathe… this is your invitation.

    Episode 279

    Show notes

Have you ever pushed so hard to finish something… only to realize you're not actually at the finish line?

In this episode, I'm catching you up on life lately, from wrapping up my book to what the last several months have really looked like behind the scenes. Writing over 100,000 words, navigating intense editing, and learning how my brain works best stretched me in ways I didn't expect. And honestly, it was both exciting and exhausting.

We're talking about what happens after a big push, that weird in-between space where you thought you'd feel "done," but instead you feel a little lost. I'm sharing what I learned about perfectionism, pacing, and why celebrating your progress matters way more than we think.

I also open up about slowing down this summer, rethinking what actually matters in this season, and how I'm trying to make life feel easier instead of doing more. Plus, a few personal updates, including a surprising health discovery and what's coming next with the book.

  12. E278: How ADHD Women Are Vulnerable to Toxic Partners

    Show notes

Ever wonder why so many women with ADHD end up in relationships that drain them? You're not alone -- and it's not a coincidence.

After hosting another magical ADHD moms' retreat, I couldn't shake the conversations we had around partners -- some amazing, others... deeply painful. In this episode, I'm sharing the patterns I've seen over and over: women with ADHD stuck in emotionally abusive relationships, often with narcissistic partners. And honestly, it makes me furious.

We're digging into why this happens, how low self-esteem and a lifetime of gaslighting make us vulnerable, and how abusers prey on our empathy and longing for stability. I'm not a narcissism expert (yet), but I've got a stack of library books and a brain buzzing with questions. If you've ever doubted your gut or felt like your relationship was slowly chipping away at your sense of self, this one's for you.

Plus, I give a life and book update, talk about the whirlwind of writing with ADHD, and how I'm navigating deadlines, stomach flu, identity theft, and everything in between.

In this episode, I answer Jacki Hayes' question from her podcast, Here's What I've Learned: How have you evolved as a business owner over the years?

The funny thing is, my response wasn't really a "business" answer. My hard won wisdom fits most situations when ADHD folks are trying something new. Or just trying to live.

Chasing a goal, no matter the size or complexity, requires a lot of the same foundational skills.

I bet you'll find at least one nugget helpful, no matter if you're starting a new business, going back to school, or organizing your hall closet. Today I'm sharing how I build my confidence when imposter syndrome is high; how I collect real data to make better and faster decisions, and how I use simplicity to make it doable, especially by matching my energy levels. When I protect capacity and use my energy management skills, I show up better for both my family and my work.

  14. E276: The Real Reason You're Always Running Late

    Show notes

Are you running late before you even start getting ready? That's time blindness at work, mama. And wow, does it make everyday life harder!

In this episode, I'm sharing the real talk from conversations with two different coaching clients this week about how ADHD brains process time—and why "it's time to go" means something totally different for us than it does for people who are naturally on time. Walking out the door isn't one task; it's a whole project. From shoes and water bottles to wrangling kids and finding the missing lunchbox, no wonder we're always scrambling.

Here's the shift: it's not about fixing yourself or forcing your brain to work like everyone else's. It's about figuring out how your ADHD brain actually works and using that knowledge as the key to the puzzle. Once you see the pattern, you can set up systems that work with your brain, not against it.

I'll walk you through how to break down "leaving the house" into actual steps, estimate how long it really takes, and give yourself the buffer time you need. This isn't about rushing or becoming a morning person – it's about giving yourself space to breathe and creating a rhythm that makes sense for you.

Want a simple way to stop living in reactive "emergency mode"? Download my free Secrets for Overcoming Time Blindness at patriciasung.com/monthahead. In just 15 minutes, you can make major headway on avoiding crises, and feel like you've got your life together.

You're carrying a lot, and you're doing better than you think. Let's make space for mornings that feel calmer and less like a fire drill.

  16. E274: How to Support Your ADHD Child: Mothers Together Q&A with Guest Host Megan Champion - Best Of Friends Series

    Show notes

Have you ever wondered if you're doing enough to support your ADHD child? Or maybe you've questioned if what you're trying is even working. You're not the only one.

When I saw that last year's most downloaded episode was about supporting your ADHD child, I knew I wanted to share this conversation from 2022 with you!

In this episode, I'm sharing a Q&A session from when I was a guest expert in the Mothers Together community, for parents of neurodivergent children. The moms in Megan's community share vulnerable and raw struggles that I know you'll relate to. We dive into some of the most common struggles moms face when raising ADHD kids: school challenges, emotional regulation, should your child try medication (especially when you're worried about them not gaining weight), and that exhausting cycle of wondering, "Am I messing this up?"

You'll hear encouragement, practical strategies, and lots of validation from a real conversation with moms who get it. Because sometimes the most powerful thing isn't a new parenting hack – it's gaining a new perspective or realizing you're not alone and you don't have to figure it all out by yourself.

  17. E273: Managing Your Daily Energy Levels as a Mom with ADHD with Guest Host JoAnn Crohn - Best Of Friends Series

    Show notes

Do you feel like you're already running on fumes – and it's barely breakfast time? You're not alone.

In this conversation from the Happy Mom Summit, I talk with JoAnn Crohn of the No Guilt Mom Podcast about what really drains our energy as ADHD moms – and how to recharge in realistic, doable ways. Spoiler alert: it's not about naps and bubble baths (unless you love those). It's about understanding your own patterns, recognizing the difference between physical, mental, and emotional energy, and creating a rhythm that actually works for your brain.

We also dig into how ADHD makes energy management trickier, why asking for help feels so hard (but matters so much), and how to tell the difference between when you need to push through… and when you need to rest.

Plus, I share more about my Energy Recharge Workshop, and why it's one of my favorite ways to help you find your spark again.

This episode is your permission slip to stop chasing those unicorn days, and start making peace with what realistically works for you. You are not a robot. Let's give ourselves some grace.

  18. E272: You're Not Lazy: Why You Don't Finish Simple Tasks

    Show notes

You start the day with good intentions. "This afternoon, I'm going to drop off this return real quick." But then you can't find the box. Or the tape. And now your printer is out of ink. Suddenly, the whole day's gone, and the box is still sitting by the door. Sound familiar?

In this episode—recorded from my car in full chauffeur-mom mode—I'm breaking down why your ADHD brain struggles to finish simple tasks. Spoiler: it's not because you're lazy. It's because what looks like one small task is actually a full project with multiple steps... and no one told us that.

I'll walk you through the three phases of any project (even the "easy" ones): deciding, preparing, and doing. And more importantly, how recognizing those steps can save your time, your energy, and your self-esteem.

If you've ever beat yourself up over why that return never made it to the post office, this one's for you. You're not lazy. Your brain just needs a different approach.

  20. E270: You're Not Missing Out When You Say No

    Show notes

Ever feel like if you say no to a good opportunity, you'll regret it forever? Like the next big thing is right around the corner... and you'll miss it if you stop moving? I've been there. Saying no is hard, especially when your ADHD brain loves chasing shiny new ideas.

In this episode, I'm sharing a clip from my friend Jacki Hayes' podcast where I answered, "What's the biggest business lesson you've learned lately?" And spoiler alert: it wasn't about business strategy. It was about letting go—of plans, of good ideas, of the fear that saying no means missing out.

You'll hear why I closed something I loved, how I made peace with doing less, and what happens when you create space for what truly matters. And if your brain, like mine, struggles with feeling like every season is forever... this one's for you.

Come take a deep breath with me. You're not falling behind when you say no—you're making space for what's next.
