384 What If Farm Marketing Didn't Have to Be So Hard? (Here's How)
Season 1, Episode 384
Show notes
Does marketing your farm ever feel harder than it should?
You know you should be sending emails, posting on social media, making offers, and finding new customers. But somehow, all those marketing tasks keep getting pushed to the bottom of your to-do list.
Maybe it's because you've convinced yourself that marketing takes too much time. Or that you're just not very good at it. Or that if you're going to do it, it needs to look really polished and professional.
But what if you're making marketing harder than it actually needs to be?
In this episode of the My Digital Farmer Podcast, I'm sharing a mindset shift that's helped me approach marketing with a lot more confidence, curiosity, and FUN: You don't have to be perfect to be effective.
I'll share how I went from being completely intimidated by Instagram Stories to making them one of my easiest, go-to marketing tools. And why getting better at marketing isn't about consuming more information—it's about getting your reps in, making mistakes, and discovering what actually works for YOUR farm.
In this episode, you'll learn:
•
Why knowing more about marketing isn't the same as getting better at it.
•
Why confidence comes AFTER you start practicing, not before.
•
How to find the simplest, most effective version of your marketing.
•
Three tiny marketing exercises you can try this week to start building your skills.
PLUS: I'm announcing something special inside Farm Marketing School!

383 Stepping Into the Mist: How to Move Forward When You Don't Know What Comes Next
Episode 383
Show notes
There's a place just beyond the edge of what you already know how to do.
I call it the mist.
As farm business owners, we find ourselves there more often than we probably realize — when an opportunity shows up, when something changes, when we take a risk, or when we find ourselves doing something we've never done before.
And the mist can feel uncomfortable. We can't see very far ahead. We don't know exactly how things are going to turn out. And sometimes, our first instinct is to back away and return to what we know.
But what if the mist isn't something to be afraid of?
What if it's actually a necessary part of becoming the business owner — and the person — you're meant to become?
In this episode, I want to give you a new way to think about those uncertain seasons in your farm business, help you recognize when you're standing in the mist, and challenge you to consider what might happen if, instead of backing away, you stepped confidently into it.
Where is the mist in your business right now?

382 Facebook Is Limiting Your External Links. Now What?
Season 1, Episode 346
Show notes
What would you do if Facebook suddenly told you that you could only share two external links per month from your farm business page?
That's exactly what happened to me while I was scheduling posts for Shared Legacy Farms—and it stopped me in my tracks.
For years, one of the primary jobs of my social media has been to move people off Facebook and onto my email list. But this new restriction, which appears to be rolling out to more business pages, could affect far more than email sign-up links. Think CSA registration, online stores, blog posts, recipes, YouTube videos, event registrations and more.
So... now what?
In this episode, I share the workaround I built for my own farm, why putting the link in the comments may NOT solve the problem, and several ways farmers can continue using Facebook to move followers deeper into their customer journey—even if Facebook makes external links harder to share.
🎧 Listen in to find out what changed—and what I'm doing about it.

381 The Nostalgia Effect: Why Memories Make Customers Buy
Season 1, Episode 381
Show notes
Sometimes customers aren't just buying the product in front of them. They're buying access to a memory.
I recently bought two boxes of sugary cereal I hadn't eaten in decades—even though I don't normally buy the stuff and can't really eat it anymore. Why? Nostalgia got me.
In this episode, we're digging into the psychology behind this surprisingly powerful buying trigger and why farm products are uniquely positioned to tap into it. We'll explore how taste, smell, sight, touch, and sound can bring old memories rushing back—and how you can use those sensory connections in your marketing.
But there's another side to nostalgia marketing that's even more interesting: creating the memories now that customers will want to relive later.
Because sometimes you're not just selling the tomato, the strawberry, or the trip to the pumpkin patch.
You're becoming part of someone's story.

380 Can You Actually CREATE More Demand for Your Farm Products?
Season 1, Episode 380
Show notes
Can You Actually CREATE More Demand for Your Farm Products?
Demand for your farm product often feels like it has a ceiling — but what if that ceiling can actually MOVE?
This is part 2 of a two-part series all about Market Demand -- an important element in the sales/marketing formula. In the last episode, I talked about the danger of scaling production before you have enough demand to support it. But that raises an important question:
What if you check the demand…and there simply isn't enough yet?
Are you stuck with the demand you've got?
Marketing can't magically make everyone want what you sell. But there ARE things you can deliberately do to make a product more desirable, move a hesitant customer toward buying, and cultivate more demand over time.
In this episode, I'm sharing five demand levers you can experiment with on your farm.
We'll talk about:
•
Why limiting something about your offer can actually increase demand
•
Some creative ways to generate buzz and energy around a product that isn't moving
•
How to tap into the power of collaborations and social proof to get more of the right eyeballs on your stuff
I'll also share some real examples from Shared Legacy Farms, including some weird, fun and unexpected things we did that got our customers talking (and buying).

379 Got Demand? The 6 Questions to Ask Before You Grow More Farm Products
Season 1, Episode 379
Show notes
What happens when you're really good at growing something… but you don't have enough people to buy it?
I learned that lesson the expensive way this summer when we ended up renting a refrigerated semi-trailer to hold thousands of pounds of watermelons we suddenly didn't have a market for. We had successfully grown the crop, but growing it and selling it turned out to be two very different things.
In this episode of My Digital Farmer, we're exploring an important piece of the revenue equation that farmers don't always spend enough time thinking about: demand.
Before you add another acre, increase your flock, double your flower production, or launch a brand-new farm product, how do you know whether your market can actually absorb what you're planning to produce?
We'll talk about how to recognize real evidence of demand, why selling out once doesn't necessarily mean you're ready to double production, and some of the factors that can quietly limit how much your market is willing or able to buy.
If growing your farm revenue is one of your goals, this episode will challenge you to look beyond the question, "How much can I produce?" and start asking a much more important question about what happens on the other side of that equation.
Because growing more product doesn't automatically create more revenue.
Tune in to learn the six questions that will pressure-test the demand for your farm products before you decide to scale.

378 Who Should NOT Buy Your Farm Product? (A Worthy Thought Exercise)
Season 1, Episode 378
Show notes
We spend a lot of time defining our ideal customer, but here's a question we don't ask nearly enough:
Who should NOT buy your product?
If you're spending too much time answering questions, overcoming objections, or trying to convince people to buy (only to have them walk away!) you may not have a sales problem. You may have a qualification problem.
In this episode, I'm sharing a recent encounter that made me realize how valuable it is to recognize our "no signals" -- the clues that someone simply isn't a good fit for what we're selling. And even better: What if our marketing could communicate those signals for us, so people self-qualify before they ever reach the sale?
We'll look at practical ways to build these filters into your website, social media, emails, FAQs, pricing, and other marketing assets, so more of the right people make it to the bottom of your funnel.
I'll also challenge you to finish this sentence:
"My farm/product is probably NOT a good fit for someone who…"
Because clear marketing doesn't just attract. It also repels.
Farm Marketing School (FMS) member Bonus: We're workshopping this topic together during our monthly Zoom call this month! We'll identify your "no signals" and brainstorm ways to build them into your marketing. Can't come live? I'll save the replay in the FMS library.

377 Practical Ways to Get More Referrals From Your Farm Customers
Season 1, Episode 377
Show notes
Most farmers will tell you that word-of-mouth is one of their best sources of new customers. But there's a big difference between being grateful for referrals, and intentionally creating more of them.
In this episode, we're talking about how to put an engine behind word-of-mouth.
I'll share a whole bunch of practical ways farms can make referrals easier, more natural, and more likely to happen—without needing complicated software or some fancy loyalty program.
More importantly, I'll show you how to think strategically about who you ask, when you ask, what you give customers to share, and what happens when a referral actually converts.
By the end of this episode, you'll be able to look at your own customer journey, spot the places where referral opportunities are hiding, and design a simple referral experiment you can actually test on your farm.
If you've already got customers who love what you do, this episode will help you turn some of that goodwill into growth.

376 What Should I Call This? How to Name Farm Products (So That They Sell)
Season 1, Episode 376
Show notes
Could changing one word on a sign or product listing make a product sell better?
Last week at our Farmer's Bag Toledo pickup, I noticed something strange happening with two kinds of onions sitting right next to each other. Customers kept choosing one—and passing over the other.
Then one of our volunteers made an observation:
"I wonder if it's the name."
That comment made me think, "Oh I've got to do a podcast about this!"
Because as farmers, we often name our products based on what we call them -- i.e. the variety in the seed catalog, the technical name of the cut, or whatever makes sense to us behind the scenes.
But your product name isn't just an inventory label.
It's marketing copy.
In this episode, I'm sharing seven simple tests you can use when naming (or renaming) your farm products—from everyday items in your online store to bigger signature offers and programs.
We'll talk about how the right name can help a customer understand what you're selling, recognize why they might want it, remember it, and sometimes even stop in their tracks and ask, "Wait... why do you call it THAT?"
If you've ever struggled with what to call something, or you've got a product customers consistently seem to overlook, this episode will give you a new way to look at the words on the sign.
Listen in and then choose ONE product on your farm to rename and test this week.

375 The Five Transformations Farmers Really Sell
Season 1, Episode 375
Show notes
What if your customers aren't actually buying your vegetables?
In this episode, Corinna shares a personal story from her son's Air Force Basic Training that reinforced a key marketing principle, and it has nothing to do with farming.
If you've ever struggled to know what to say in your emails, on your website, or in your social media posts, this episode will help you uncover the deeper reason people choose to buy from your farm. Eventually all business owners realize that customers don't buy products... they buy the life those products help create.
You'll learn how to identify the transformation your farm really delivers, why some customer motivations matter more than others, and how this one mindset shift can change every piece of your marketing.
If you're ready to stop talking about vegetables and start connecting with what your customers truly want, this episode is for you.

If you've ever had an idea sitting in your notebook wondering...
"Could this actually become something?"
...this episode will show you exactly how we walked one idea all the way into the marketplace.
Inside this episode you'll discover:
• Why one unexpected opportunity made us believe Farmer's Bag Toledo needed to exist.
• How the right strategic partnership accelerated everything.
• Why thinking of it as a beta test removed so much pressure.
• The dozens of decisions every new offer requires before anyone can buy.
• How we built the offer itself—from pricing and bonuses to messaging and positioning.
• The technology stack we used to automate the customer experience.
• The launch sequence that created momentum before the doors even opened.
• What surprised me most after watching the entire launch unfold.
• The biggest lesson I'll carry into every future offer I build.Whether you're launching a CSA, opening a farm stand, starting a flower subscription, or creating something completely new, this episode is really about learning how successful offers are designed.

Download the Farmer's Bag Toledo Promo Flier. I originally created this as something to pass out to potential customers to explain what it was in a nutshell. In the end, we didn't need to use it that way. Instead I gave it to my media outlets to help explain our pitch.
I mention Zapier in this podcast. This is a tool that will connect apps to each other and create automations for you.

373: The 7 Essential Offers Every Farm Business Needs
Season 1, Episode 370
Show notes
Imagine asking the first runner in a relay race to carry the baton from the starting line all the way to the finish. No winning team would do that.
Yet many farm businesses unknowingly expect one offer to do exactly that.
In this episode, I introduce a simple framework that completely changed the way I think about marketing: The Offer Portfolio. Instead of relying on one offer to attract new customers, create first-time buyers, build loyalty, increase order value, and generate referrals, you'll discover the 7 essential offers every farm business should consider -- and the unique role each one plays.
Just like a relay team, every offer has one job: run its leg of the race, then pass the baton to the next.
In this episode, you'll discover:
• Why every offer should have one clear job.
• The 7 essential offers every farm business needs.
• How each offer pulls a different business growth lever.
• How to identify the missing "runner" that's holding your business back.By the end of this episode, you'll stop asking, "What should I sell next?"
…and start asking, "Which runner is missing from my relay team?"

372 Dealing with Dread: The Hidden Marketing Obstacle That's Keeping Farmers Stuck
Season 1, Episode 362
Show notes
Have you ever found yourself putting off the very marketing task that could help your farm grow?
Writing the email. Launching the promotion. Recording the video. Raising your prices. Building the sales page.
You know it needs to get done... but every time you think about it, you feel that heavy sense of dread.
In this episode, I share a personal discovery that is challenging the the way I think about procrastination, marketing, and business growth. After catching myself avoiding two important projects this month, I realized something surprising:
I wasn't avoiding the work. I was avoiding the story I was telling myself about the work.
In this episode, we'll explore why your brain creates dread in the first place, why we often mistake uncertainty for difficulty, and why many farmers wrongly conclude they're "bad at marketing" when they're really just avoiding uncomfortable marketing tasks.
Most importantly, I'll show you how to reinterpret dread -- not as a stop sign, but as a possible indicator that you're standing at the edge of growth.
If you've been procrastinating on marketing, struggling to take action, or feeling stuck in your farm business, this episode will give you a completely new way to think about what's really holding you back.

371 Re-Broadcast: Use This Weekly Checklist to Sell More at the Farmer's Market
Season 1, Episode 366
Show notes
This podcast is for all of you who go to farmer's markets!! This episode is a rebroadcast! I first recorded it two years ago, and I decided to share it again, because it needs repeating!
Do you want to walk away from the market feeling like you did everything you could to maximize sales that day?
Here's a fact: You're going to sell more at the farmer's market if you do a little bit of preparation in the sales strategy department.
In this episode, I'm sharing my checklist of "things to make sure you do" before you hop into the truck and head to market. Things like: create a weekly special offer. Print this checklist out and create a workflow each week to check them off. The more of these you can do, the more revenue you will drive.
Promise.

370 Finding the Friction That's Costing You Sales
Season 1, Episode 370
Show notes
Every farm has friction. The question is… can you see it?
Friction is anything that makes buying from your farm harder than it needs to be. It shows up in every business—often in places we've become blind to because we know our own systems so well. The good news? You don't have to eliminate every point of friction to see results. Sometimes removing just one obstacle can make a meaningful difference.
In this episode, I'll introduce you to the concept of becoming a Friction Detective. Together, we'll explore the most common places friction hides in a farm business, the questions you should be asking as you audit your customer experience, and how to identify one simple improvement you can make this week to help more customers move from interested... to buying.
It's time to put on your detective hat.

369 The One Metric That Tells You if Your Farm Leads Are Actually Worth Anything
Season 1, Episode 369
Show notes
What is a lead actually worth to your farm business?
Most farmers know how many email subscribers they have.
Far fewer know what those subscribers are actually worth.
And that can lead to some very bad marketing decisions.
In this episode, I introduce a simple metric called Earnings Per Lead (EPL) that helps you measure the value of the people entering your world -- i.e. whether they came from a Facebook ad, a farmers market, a farm tour, a referral, or a lead magnet.
You'll learn how to calculate EPL, why it's different from Cost Per Lead, and how it can help you decide which marketing activities deserve more of your time, money, and attention.
In this episode, we'll discuss:
•
What Earnings Per Lead (EPL) is and why it matters
•
Why Cost Per Lead can be misleading
•
How to calculate EPL using a simple formula
•
How to track the value of different lead sources
•
Why some leads are far more valuable than others
•
Real-world examples from CSA farms, meat producers, flower farms, and online stores
•
How EPL can help you make smarter marketing decisions
If you've ever wondered whether your lead magnets, email list growth efforts, farm tours, or Facebook ads are actually producing customers, this episode will give you a new way to look at your marketing.

368: How to Prioritize Your Farm Marketing When Time Is Tight
Season 1, Episode 368
Show notes
One of the questions I hear all the time from farmers is:
"What marketing channel should I focus on?"
Or:
"If I only have a few hours a week, what's the minimum marketing I need to do?"
But I think that's the wrong question.
The real question is:
Where should I invest my limited marketing time so it creates the biggest impact?
In this episode, I share a simple framework to help you decide where your marketing time should go based on the three metrics that actually drive farm revenue: customer count, average order value, and order frequency.
We'll talk about the four places marketing time can go, why some marketing activities create far more leverage than others, and how to know whether your next hour should be spent communicating, planning, optimizing, or measuring.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by all the marketing advice out there (or wondered if you're spending your time on the right things), this episode will help you focus on what matters most.

367: Not Every Offer Is a First Offer: A Live FMS Coaching Call with Pigasus Meats
Season 1, Episode 365
Show notes
What happens when you launch an offer that seems like a no-brainer... and nobody buys it?
In this episode, you'll listen in on a real Farm Marketing School coaching call with Lexi from Pigasus Meats. Lexi came to the call frustrated because their Simple Supper Box subscription had only attracted one customer after months of promotion.
As we dug into the problem, we uncovered a lesson that applies to every farm business:
Not every offer is the right first offer.
Many farmers assume that if an offer isn't selling, the offer itself must be flawed. But sometimes the real issue is where that offer sits in the customer journey.
A meat subscription might be a fantastic offer.
A membership, bundle, or annual commitment might be a fantastic offer.
But if you're asking brand-new customers to make a big commitment before they've built trust in your farm, even a great offer can struggle.
In this coaching call, you'll hear us explore:
• How customers move from stranger to superfan
• Why some offers belong later in the customer journey
• The mistake farmers make when they lead with a high-commitment offer
• How to identify the products that should come before your premium offer
• Why sequencing matters just as much as pricing and positioningIf you've ever launched something that didn't get the response you hoped for, this episode will challenge you to look beyond the offer itself and ask a different question:
Is this the right offer... for this stage of the relationship?
This Week's Homework Challenge:
Make a list of every offer in your business. Then put them in order based on what a brand-new customer should buy first.
• What's the easiest, lowest-risk way to get started with you?
• What's the next step after that?
• And what comes after that? When you're done, look at your most profitable offer and ask yourself:
Have I earned the right to present this offer yet?
Because not every offer is a first offer.

366 What Farmers Can Learn from Aldi's "Shop First" Strategy
Season 1, Episode 366
Show notes
I got this podcast episode idea in the middle of Aldi.
Seriously.
I was walking down the grocery aisle when a sign stopped me in my tracks. It said:
"Shop Aldi First."
And I remember thinking: "Dang. That's good."
Buried inside that simple phrase was a powerful marketing lesson that applies to almost every direct-to-consumer farm business.
Aldi isn't trying to convince customers to buy everything from them.
They're trying to become the first stop.
In this episode, I unpack the marketing strategy behind Aldi's campaign and show how farmers can apply the same thinking to become the first place customers think of when they need your __________________.

365 Build Your Farm's "Dream 25" List
Season 1, Episode 365
Show notes
What if the fastest way to grow your farm business wasn't finding more customers… but finding the people who already HAVE your customers' attention?
In this episode, I'm introducing the concept of the "Dream 25 List" -- a simplified version of the famous Dream 100 marketing strategy -- and showing farmers how to identify partnership opportunities hiding all around them.
We're talking about:
• what's a Dream 25 list?
• why partnerships can accelerate trust faster than social media
• how to identify 25 businesses and influencers that already serve your ideal customer
• examples of creative partnerships for flower farms, CSA farms, meat producers, and wedding flower growersI also share real examples from Shared Legacy Farms, Anderson Farms, Weber Ranch, and a coaching call inside Farm Marketing School that sparked this conversation.
Homework Assignment:
Create your own Dream 25 List:
• Who already has the trust and attention of your ideal customer?
• Then choose THREE relationships to begin building this month.Helpful Links & Resources
