Jerry de Wilde: Monterey Pop, The Farm & the ’60s Counterculture | ICYMI
Show notes
What was it like to hear The Mamas and the Papas sing “California Dreamin’” before the world knew who they were? To stand onstage at the Monterey Pop Festival as Jimi Hendrix set his guitar on fire? Or to be part of the free-spirited, anything-goes atmosphere of Los Angeles in 1967?
On this episode of My Rock Moment, photographer Jerry “Dok” de Wilde joins me to talk about his book, In Case You Missed It, and the extraordinary people, places, and moments he captured along the way.
Jerry takes us inside The Farm, the legendary Hollywood Hills gathering place that evolved into a hub for artists, musicians, and counterculture figures. He shares the story of meeting The Mamas and the Papas just before they recorded their first album, and hearing them perform “California Dreamin’” in a living room, and noting that they had something special.
We revisit the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, where Jerry helped build the stage before finding himself with a camera and a front-row view of rock history, including Hendrix’s unforgettable guitar-burning performance, and Otis Redding and Ravi Shankar’s legendary performances. He also recalls the mood of the LA Love-In at Elysian Park, where people came together to share music, food, and a sense of togetherness.
And there’s an eerie story involving Jim Morrison, and his reaction to receiving his anagram “Mr. Mojo Risin'" that would later become part of The Doors’ "L.A. Woman."

Elvis Before the Legend: Scotty Moore & the Rock And Roll Detective®
Show notes
What was Elvis Presley really like before he became Elvis?
On this episode of My Rock Moment, we're joined by Jim Berkenstadt, the Rock And Roll Detective®, to talk about his new book, Elvis Presley: Conversations with Scotty Moore. Scotty Moore was there from the very beginning, standing beside Elvis at Sun Records as they recorded “That’s All Right” and helped create a sound that changed popular music.
Through Scotty’s firsthand recollections, Jim takes us inside those early days with the Blue Moon Boys, from their first rehearsals and the Louisiana Hayride to the frenzy that followed Elvis as his fame exploded. We talk about the musicians behind the sound, the early recording sessions, Elvis’s relationship with Colonel Tom Parker, the band’s decision to walk away, and what happened when Scotty returned after Elvis’s time in the Army.
We also get into Elvis’s Hollywood years, his complicated relationship with the music he was recording for films, and the question Scotty kept asking him: did he really want to be a singer or an actor?
The book offers a rare perspective on Elvis through someone who knew him before the legend took over. I was honored to contribute an endorsement to the back of the book, and Jim and I talk about some of the stories and discoveries that make it such a fascinating read.
And there’s a Spotify playlist to go along with the book, featuring the music behind the story.
If you love Elvis, Sun Records and the early days of rock ’n’ roll, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

Show notes
Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Alison Ellwood has spent years uncovering the stories behind some of music’s most fascinating artists and scenes, from the Eagles and the Go-Go’s to Laurel Canyon and San Francisco. Her latest film, Boy George & Culture Club, takes us behind the colorful image of one of the most iconic bands of the 1980s and into the complicated stories that unfolded behind the scenes.
We talk about the love affair between Boy George and Jon Moss that inspired the music, George’s struggles with drug abuse, the secrets within the band, and the fallout surrounding their missed opportunity to perform at Live Aid.

She shares what she’s really looking for when she sits down with an artist and how she gets beyond the answers they’ve given a hundred times before.

If These Walls Could Rock: The Story of LA's Famed Sunset Marquis Hotel
Show notes
For more than 60 years, the Sunset Marquis has been far more than just a hotel. Hidden behind its unassuming gates just off the Sunset Strip, it became a sanctuary for some of the biggest names in music—a place where artists could escape the spotlight, create, recover, celebrate, and occasionally indulge in a little rock 'n' roll debauchery.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, Amanda sits down with Craig Williams and Tyler Measom, the directors of the new documentary If These Walls Could Rock, opening in theaters and on streaming August 14.
Craig's connection to the story began more than a decade ago when he co-authored If These Walls Could Rock with hotel owner Mark Rosenthal. Together with Tyler, he has now brought the extraordinary history of the Sunset Marquis to the screen.
Amanda and the directors discuss how a hotel inspired by the Garden of Allah became one of the music industry's best-kept secrets, why generations of artists—from Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Slash, Dave Grohl, Roger Daltrey, Cyndi Lauper and many more—considered it a home away from home, and why privacy, discretion, and trust became the hotel's greatest currency.
They also dive into some of the documentary's most memorable stories, including Bruce Springsteen's chance encounter with Ron Kovic that would ultimately influence Born in the U.S.A., the remarkable father-son story of George and Mark Rosenthal that forms the emotional heart of the film, the challenge of separating rock mythology from reality, and some of the incredible stories that never made the final cut.

Blues Guitarist Will Johns: Born Into Rock, Saved by the Blues
Show notes
British blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Will Johns has just released his sixth studio album, On Top of the World, and this September he'll publish his deeply personal memoir, Bluesdaddy: Born into Noise, Raised on Chaos and Saved by the Blues.
The title says it all.
Will was born into one of rock music's most legendary families. He's the son of famed producer and engineer Andy Johns, whose work can be heard on classic albums by Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. His uncle is legendary producer and engineer Glyn Johns. His mother is Paula Boyd, making him the nephew of Pattie Boyd and Jenny Boyd. That also meant that George Harrison, Eric Clapton and even Mick Fleetwood were family. In fact, Eric wasn't just one of the greatest guitarists in history—he was Uncle Eric, and the man who inspired Will to play guitar.
But Bluesdaddy isn't a story about celebrity. It's a story about growing up surrounded by brilliance and addiction, fame and dysfunction, and ultimately finding salvation through the blues.
Today, Will has built an impressive legacy of his own. He's been nominated for Best Original Blues Song at the British Blues Awards three years in a row, was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Chicago in 2025, is currently touring with The Cream of Clapton Band, and this September he'll also perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in Texas.
In our conversation, we talk about what it was really like growing up inside one of rock's most famous families and finding his own voice as an artist.

From the Rock Hall to Rolling Stone: Andy Greene’s Rock Journey
Show notes
Before rock history hardens into legend, someone has to sit across from the people who lived it and ask the right questions.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, Amanda Morck sits down with Andy Greene, senior writer at Rolling Stone. He's been with the magazine since 2004 and is one of the most trusted long-form interviewers. For two decades, Andy has documented the voices behind the music — from global superstars to the musicians who quietly shaped the sound of entire eras.
Andy is the creator of Rolling Stone’s acclaimed interview series Unknown Legends, spotlighting veteran artists who helped build iconic careers without becoming household names, and King for a Day, which explores the high-stakes experience of singers stepping into major bands after the departure of a legendary frontman.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Andy reflects on what Rolling Stone meant to him before he ever walked through its doors, and how his perspective changed once he was inside. He shares stories from interviewing Phil Collins of Genesis (his favorite band growing up), recounts a deeply human moment connecting with Bill Withers, and explains how he builds trust with artists who’ve answered the same questions for decades.
The discussion also turns to California rock — the mythology, the session players, the excess, and the musicians history may not have fully caught up with. Along the way, Andy opens up about interviewing Stephen King, including King’s famously strong feelings about The Shining and Jack Nicholson’s performance.
Andy brings significant perspective to the art of music interviews and has some incredible stories to share from his journey from the Rock Hall to Rolling Stone.

Love, Freddie: Lesley-Ann Jones on Freddie Mercury’s Secret Life and the Daughter He Kept Private
Show notes
Freddie Mercury is one of the most written-about figures in rock history — and one of the most misunderstood.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, Amanda Morck speaks with acclaimed rock journalist Lesley-Ann Jones about her most intimate book yet, Love, Freddie: Freddie Mercury’s Secret Life and Love. Built around private journals Freddie Mercury entrusted to someone very close to him — his daughter — the book offers rare insight into a hidden part of his life, far from the stage, the myth, and the spectacle.
This episode explores claims presented in Lesley-Ann Jones’s book and reflects her reporting and perspective.
Lesley-Ann shares how a mysterious email led her to this extraordinary material, why Freddie insisted some notebooks not be read for decades, and what they reveal about love, secrecy, sexuality, fatherhood, and the emotional cost of fame. The conversation also reexamines Mary Austin’s role in Freddie’s life, the profound secrecy surrounding his child, and the weight of honoring a truth Freddie never intended to be public.
This is not an episode about dismantling a legacy. It’s about adding dimension, and about seeing Freddie Mercury not just as an icon, but as a deeply human man shaped by fear, devotion, contradiction, and love.

Canyon Songs of Love & Heartbreak with Emmeline Summerton of Lost Canyons LA
Show notes
Love, lust, and heartbreak are the secret soundtrack of the LA canyons.
In this episode of My Rock Moment we welcome Emmeline Summerton of Instagram's Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer of the New Topanga Times. Together we trace that soundtrack through eight songs — uncovering the romance, the messiness and the broken hearts behind the lyrics.
We start with “Guinnevere,” David Crosby’s mysterious song inspired by 3 women — Christine Hinton, Joni Mitchell, and the surprising third muse, “Delta Lady” — Leon Russell’s ode to Rita Coolidge and the wild, studio-to-road romance that sent them straight into Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs tour. Then we move to the Mamas & the Papas’ “Go Where You Wanna Go,” a sunny single born from the band’s very messy affairs.
From there: “Our House,” Graham Nash’s tiny, perfect snapshot of life with Joni Mitchell in Laurel Canyon — ordinary moments made into a classic. Then Joni’s own “All I Want’ about her relationship with James Taylor. We’ll also unpack “Leather and Lace,” the duet that reunited Stevie Nicks and Don Henley after a broken romance and leer jet flirtations; “Faithless Love,” J.D. Souther’s devastating ballad given wings by Linda Ronstadt during their fraught romance and end with Neil Young’s "A Man Needs a Maid" off of Harvest.
This is a tour of romance and ruin, tenderness and betrayal — the songs that turned private heartbreak into something the rest of us could sing along to. We’ll share the stories behind each track and the music that made the canyons heartbreak famous.

Steve Rosen's Tonechaser: Understanding Eddie Van Halen
Show notes
In this episode of My Rock Moment, I sit down with veteran music journalist Steve Rosen — author of Tonechaser: Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey with Edward Van Halen — to uncover the untold story of the man behind the legend: Eddie Van Halen.

We revisit that very first night at The Whisky a Go Go, where their friendship began, and talk about the moment Rosen was invited to hear an early cut of Van Halen’s second album — long before the world had any idea what was coming.
Steve shares an intimate look at Eddie’s humility, his complex relationship with David Lee Roth, and the moments that defined both the man and the music.

Show notes
Before becoming a rock ‘n’ roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn’t long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early ’70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin’s legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven’s Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on.

Steve Postell’s Musical Journey — Our House, The Immediate Family, and Beyond
Show notes
Some folks grow up dreaming of meeting their heroes—Steve Postell just grabbed his guitar and did it.
Born and raised in New York City, Steve is a guitarist, songwriter, producer, and composer whose career has been nothing short of a musical odyssey. A classically trained guitarist, he went on to collaborate with legends like David Crosby, and after Crosby’s passing, carried that legacy forward by forming Our House: The Music of CSNY, bringing the spirit of those iconic harmonies back to the stage.
He’s also a founding member of The Immediate Family, the supergroup of legendary session players who shaped the sound of countless rock classics. And with his latest solo album, Walking Through These Blues, Steve brings together an extraordinary cast of collaborators—including David Crosby, Glen Phillips, and Leland Sklar—united by his vision and songwriting.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, Steve shares his New York roots, classical training, unforgettable collaborations, and the stories behind Our House, The Immediate Family, and his solo work.

Blondie Chaplin - Legendary Guitarist, Singer and Former Beach Boy
Show notes
My Rock Moment had the extraordinary privilege of catching up with Blondie Chaplin, a true legend whose musical journey reads like a who's-who of rock history. Born in Durban, South Africa, he first made waves as a teen with The Flames, eventually catching the attention of Carl Wilson, who helped bring him into the Beach Boys family in the early 1970s.
During our conversation, Blondie took me back to that pivotal era - remembering how he and Ricky Fataar joined the group following Bruce Johnston's departure and Dennis Wilson’s hand injury. It was a time when the band sought new identity and creative depth, and Blondie’s soulful presence helped shape that fresh direction.
We delved into the making of "Sail On, Sailor," the standout track from Holland (1973), which Blondie famously sang lead on. He shared how the song wasn’t just another composition. Recorded in a barn outside of Amsterdam and finished at Village Recorders in L.A., Blondie recalled how Carl and the rest of the band coaxed him into singing it, and how the performance eventually anchored the album.
Then we turned to his time with The Rolling Stones, where from 1997 onward, Blondie became an invaluable collaborator - touring, recording, and contributing acoustic guitar, percussion, and backing vocals for around ten years. He reflects on what it was like stepping into that legendary circle.
It was one of those interviews that reminds you: some musicians don’t just witness rock history - they help write it.

Show notes
He’s jammed with Freddie Mercury after Live Aid, written songs with Beach Boys royalty, and once found himself shooting guns in a backyard with KISS guitarist Ace Frehley…while on Quaaludes.

In this episode, we cover it all—from co-writing “Wish” with Al Jardine, to talking quantum physics with Paul McCartney, to the unreleased David Bowie–Brandy track he’s holding onto. He shares the full story behind that surreal Ace Frehley moment and discusses his latest release, “This New Age,” recorded with the band Familiar Faces.
