Show notes
DoorDash and Instacart are joining forces, Amazon is taking its fresh grocery ambitions global, and smart carts might be on their way out. There's A LOT to unpack this week on GrocerTalk, and Ben Miller is joined by Neil Saunders, Managing Director of Retail at GlobalData, to make sense of it all.
Sponsored by Instacart Enterprise, Portager, Vusion, and Sifter Solutions, Ben and Neil debate whether DoorDash's $17 billion acquisition of Instacart can stand up to antitrust scrutiny, why Amazon's same-day grocery expansion into Germany could be a bigger story than it seems, and whether Instacart pulling the plug on Caper Cart signals the beginning of the end for smart carts.
This week, they discuss:

David's Bridal Says "I Do" to Wall Street With Pearl Spinoff | Fast Five Shorts
Show notes
David's Bridal is planning to spin off Pearl, its AI-powered wedding planning and vendor marketplace platform, into a publicly traded company through a SPAC transaction. The proposed deal values Pearl at approximately $350 million and includes a $75 million private investment in public equity, with David's Bridal retaining its physical stores and a stake in the new company. Pearl would also acquire the David's Bridal brand and intellectual property, with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2027.
Is David's Bridal unlocking the value of its wedding planning ecosystem or simply putting an AI label on a brand spinoff? Chris Walton and Martin Bailie take opposing positions on the deal, debating whether separating the digital platform from the physical retail business creates new opportunities or introduces significant risks.

Gap Hires an AI Recruiter for the Holiday Rush | Fast Five Shorts
Show notes
Gap Inc. is expanding its AI-powered recruiting assistant, Bridgette, to help manage an expected 200,000 seasonal job applications during the holiday hiring rush. Built on Paradox's AI recruiting platform and integrated with Workday Recruiting, Bridgette has already engaged nearly 45,000 candidates and scheduled more than 7,000 interviews during its pilot across over 100 stores and six distribution centers. The technology handles scheduling and candidate communication while store managers retain control over hiring decisions.
Could AI recruiting be one of the most practical applications of artificial intelligence in retail? Chris Walton and Martin Bailie discuss how the technology could free up valuable store manager time while also raising important questions about data security, governance, and the candidate experience.

The updated offering includes unlimited free same-day delivery on orders over $30, free Flash pickup, 30-minute delivery for a $2 upgrade, and additional loyalty rewards. Albertsons estimates that regular members could save an average of $25 per week through the program.
Is this an essential competitive move or a sign that Albertsons is getting desperate? Chris Walton and Martin Bailie debate whether the aggressive price cut makes financial sense, with Chris questioning the timing and Martin arguing that doing nothing could be even more costly.

Making Space – Real Time: A Bed Bath Mash-Up, Dick’s House of Sport & A “Back to Starbucks” Review
Show notes
What happens when three home brands share one roof? On Episode 3 of Making Space Real Time, Chris Niesen is joined again by Omni Talk’s Chris Walton to talk through three retail stories they saw for themselves on the store floor.
🏠 The Container Store x Bed Bath & Beyond x Kirkland’s
The first co-branded “everything home” stores promise room-based solutions and a big jump in sales per square foot, from $220 to $500. But four months after a “June conversion,” the store we visited still had hundreds of boxes of freight on the sales floor, an Elfa closet space with almost nothing merchandised in it, and very little sign of Kirkland’s. Is there real potential here, or is it a square peg in a round hole? One Chris says no. The other gives it a puncher’s chance.
🏀 Dick’s House of Sport: A Lab That Works Comps are up 4.9%, there are 41 House of Sport stores open, and the plan is 75 to 100 by 2028.
We talk about why House of Sport keeps winning: discipline, a clear point of view, and a floor that changes with the seasons, like how it scaled back swimwear in Minnesota in October without dropping it. While the rest of retail shrank its stores, Dick’s went bigger. Could toys, beauty or electronics do the same?
☕ Back to Starbucks: Inside the Remodels
The 250 closures got the headlines, but we looked at the roughly 1,500 stores getting the “Back to Starbucks” remodel: cognac leather chairs, terracotta walls, linen dividers and the new digital order board. We spent an hour sitting in a remodeled store. Is comfier seating enough when so much of the volume now comes through the app? We also cover Starbucks China now requiring a purchase to sit down.
🛒 The Checkout
A better Old Navy checkout queue, a shout-out to Walgreens pharmacy, the new Adidas concept store at Mall of America with its Anthony Edwards shop, and Halloween plans that didn’t go as expected.
