  1. Don’t laugh at me but these silly things are changing my life

    Show notes

In this solo episode, Rachel Awtrey hands listeners her JOYFUL report, a letter-by-letter look at what’s bringing her joy and what God is teaching her right now. She dishes on her new backyard chickens (yes, including two Silkies), the bedtime rhythm that’s reshaping her evenings, and the small delights she can’t stop talking about, from a maple sea salt latte to a Christian rap playlist built for anyone who grew up on Lil Wayne and Usher.

Then things get real. Rachel opens up about why being truly known by others is safer than hiding, what the story of Moses taught her about bringing what’s in your hand to who God is, and how she’s learning to filter out the noise online and ask whether she’s adding to it or sharing truth. She wraps up with her hopes for a Thanksgiving morning with the neighbors and a very colorful Christmas.

Whether you’re in a season of joy or just trying to find it, this episode is an invitation to notice the good gifts in your ordinary days and to stop carrying life alone.

  3. “If I let go, it’ll all fall apart” | A Conversation about Control with Lysa TerKeurst

    Show notes

Most of us wouldn't call ourselves controlling. We'd call ourselves responsible. But when someone we love is making a choice that's going to hurt them, when we've prayed the same prayer for years and nothing has moved and stepping in starts to feel like the only reasonable thing left. Lysa TerKeurst has spent a lot of time in that exact tension, and her new book Making Peace with What I Can't Control is her answer to it. In this conversation, we get into the fears that quietly drive our grip, the line between healthy responsibility and fear-driven control, and what it actually looks like to hand something back to God when you've been carrying it for years. Lysa's own framing is simple and brutal: ask whether there's anything that could be done today that you haven't done. Do that, and then let the rest go, because you can only do what you can do today. If you're tired in a way sleep doesn't fix, this one's for you. 4. How to Help People & Let Them Help You

    Show notes

Someone says "tell me how I can help" and you go completely blank. Not because you don't need help. You're drowning. But somebody just opened the door and you can't name a single thing to walk through it with.

In this episode, Rachel argues that the blank stare isn't a character flaw. It's a preparation gap.

People compliment Rachel's community constantly "you have the best people, you're so blessed, you got lucky with Birmingham. " And she'll be the first to say she's blessed. But none of it was luck. Every one of those relationships was built on purpose, mostly years before she ever needed anybody. Which means the community available to her is almost certainly available to you.

This summer, Rachel started taking actual notes on it: what helped, what didn't, what felt clunky, what she'd do one degree differently next time. What she ended up with wasn't a feelings list. It was almost a system — and she's handing the whole thing over here.

Next week: Everything we call independence — I've got it, I don't want to be a burden — Rachel thinks a lot of it is actually control. Same fear underneath both: if I don't hold this, it falls apart. She sits down with Lysa TerKeurst to talk about her brand-new book, Making Peace with What I Can't Control. Listen to these two back to back. They're one conversation.

Mentioned in this episode: Xuan Zhao & Nicholas Epley's research in Psychological Science · Jeffrey Hall on the hours friendship takes · Jason VanRuler, Get Past Your Past · Dr. Alison Cook, The Best of You · Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, Sacred Rest (free rest assessment at RestQuiz.com) · Lysa TerKeurst, Making Peace with What I Can't Control

  5. The biggest story I wasn't allowed to share (but now I can)

    Show notes

Rachel is back after the longest break she's ever taken from anything annnnnnd she's finally able to explain why she left!

Her husband was deployed with hours of notice, on their son's fifth birthday. Whomp, whomp. What followed was a summer of solo parenting with no end date, no countdown, and no way to talk about most of it publicly. For someone who has built her entire career on telling you the truth about her ordinary days, having the biggest story of her life and not being able to share it changed how she thinks about her work, her family, and what's actually hers to give away.

In this episode she catches you all the way up: the hardest part of the whole season, the realization that changed how she parents through hard things, what she had to keep private and why privacy isn't hiding, the fifty neighbors who lined her street with American flags when he came home, the phone call from NBC Nightly News, the cursed family beach trip, and eight chickens.

There are four reflection questions built in, so grab a pen or get ready to replay this one! This one isn't just her summer yap sesh!!

Next week: how to ask for help without apologizing for existing, and how to build the kind of friendships that can actually carry you. OOOOOOOF.

If this episode meets you where you are, rate the show and send it to one person running a marathon with no finish line right now.

  8. The One Habit That's Spicy but Will Build (or Break) You

    Show notes

For real: staying stuck is hard. Overthinking is hard. Avoiding the conversation, the decision, the leap - it's literally all hard. So the real question isn't how do I make life easier? It's which hard am I actually choosing?

In this episode, Rachel unpacks why discomfort isn't a stop sign my girl!! This is an invitation. She walks through the brain science of the avoidance loop (why dodging hard things actually makes the fear bigger), what dopamine, distress tolerance, and neuroplasticity (oooooh big word) have to do with the life you say you want, and why Scripture has been telling us this all along. You'll hear the stories of Amelia Earhart, Winston Churchill, and Corrie ten Boom three very different people who all learned the same thing: you don't rise to the level of your intentions, you rise to the level of what you've trained yourself to handle.

She also gives you a simple, doable weekly practice. Think like small, intentional, on-purpose hard things in four areas (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) so you stop waiting until you "feel ready" and start building the capacity for the life you're actually asking God for.

If you've been quietly wondering why you keep stalling out on the thing you know you're supposed to do, this one's for you.

I’ve been a little MIA - and yes, I’m going to talk about it but also no, I’m not telling you everything 😅

Before you worry, everyone is healthy, my marriage is strong, and things are okay. But life has shifted in a way that requires a little more privacy, a little more wisdom, and a lot more trust.

In this episode, I’m sharing what I can like including why not everything belongs on the front porch, how I’m navigating boundaries while still showing up online, and what this season is teaching me.

We’re also diving into a JOYFUL Report (you know I love these) from random current obsessions to deeper lessons about receiving help and letting go.

And I’ll take you with me to Colorado, where I had one of the sweetest reminders that I don’t always need answers from God, sometimes I just need to sit with Him.

  12. My African Diary | What I'm Seeing and Learning in Kenya

    Show notes

I’m recording this episode from Africa and it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before.

In this episode, I’m sharing a real-time look at what we’ve been doing here: visiting neighborhoods and slums, walking through schools, sitting in family homes, attending church, and hearing firsthand stories from people who are shaping their communities in powerful ways.

You’ll hear about the joy and energy inside classrooms, the pride families have in their homes, the faith woven into everyday life, and the moments that surprised me most along the way. This isn’t a polished highlight reel, though! It’s a journalistic snapshot of what I’m seeing, learning, and processing as I go.

Some of these stories are light and joyful. Some are sobering. All of them are human.

  13. If Prayer Feels Hard, This Episode Is for You | Episode 361 with Addison Bevere

    Show notes

In this episode, I’m joined by Addison Bevere, and this conversation felt like a deep exhale for my soul.We talk about prayer but not in a way that adds more pressure or makes you feel like you’re “doing it wrong.” Addison brings so much wisdom around what it actually means to pray without ceasing, how prayer can be woven into the real rhythms of your everyday life, and how connection with God doesn’t have to look complicated or performative.

  14. 31 Things in 31 Years | Episode 360

    Show notes

Turning 31 has me reflecting and not in a highlight-reel kind of way, but in the real, lived-in, God-meets-the-mess kind of way. In this episode, I’m sharing 31 things I’ve learned in 31 years and some hard-won, some lighthearted, some deeply spiritual, and some that only make sense after walking through motherhood, grief, growth, and a whole lot of changing your mind along the way.

This isn’t a list of life hacks or a “here’s how I got it all together” moment (because…ya know….lol). It’s more like sitting on the couch together talking about what’s actually shaped me like faith, friendship, boundaries, joy, obedience, expectations, and learning to love my life even when I don’t like every part of it.

If you’re in a season of reflection, transition, or just need someone to put words to things you’ve been feeling but haven’t been able to name yet then this one’s for you.

  15. The Best Way to Look at the New Year! | Episode 359

    Show notes

Pull up a chair and let’s talk. 🤍
In this cozy solo episode of Real Talk, I’m taking you with me as I close the door on 2025 and crack open 2026 with honesty, intentionality, and with a lot of heart!

I’m sharing what I’m carrying forward (hello, momentum with margin), what I’m leaving behind (looking at you, hustle culture 👋), and how I’m thinking about joy, faith, purpose, and community in this next season. We’ll talk about choosing depth over noise, letting joy be a practice instead of just a personality, honoring the season you’re actually in, and why rushing, over-explaining, and all-or-nothing thinking are officially off the guest list.

This episode is less about reinvention and more about refinement slow steps, real grace, and trusting that small, faithful choices add up over time.

I’m also giving you a little sneak peek at what’s coming next: a fresh look and feel for the podcast, upcoming travel (including Kenya!!! 🤍), new speaking opportunities, and what’s stirring in my heart as I begin writing my second book.

If you’re heading into 2026 craving more joy, more clarity, and a little permission to move at a human pace this one’s for you. Come sit with me!

We’re talking about joy that doesn’t require perfection, faith that fits real life, and a God who shows up whether this night feels full of celebration, grief, anxiety, or quiet delight. 18. Christmas Traditions We're OBSESSED With! | Episode 357

    Show notes

There’s something about Christmas that invites us to slow down, lean in, and do the same things every year on purpose. In this episode, I’m sharing the Christmas traditions our family can’t imagine the season without—the big ones, the small ones, and the ones that started on accident and somehow became sacred.

We’re talking cozy mornings, childhood throwbacks, foods that instantly feel like home, and the little rhythms that anchor us when the season feels loud or rushed. Some of these traditions are joyful and playful, some are deeply meaningful, and all of them remind us that joy is often found in repetition—not perfection.

If you’re craving ideas to make this season feel more grounded, more connected, or just more fun, this conversation is for you. Come borrow a tradition (or two), feel a little less pressure to do it all, and be reminded that the most memorable moments are usually the simplest ones.

  20. How Do You Trust God After the Unthinkable? with Amber Smith | Episode 356

    Show notes

When country music star Granger Smith and his wife, Amber Emily Smith, lost their three-year-old son, River, their world stopped. In the depths of unimaginable grief, Amber found herself on the bathroom floor—empty, aching, and crying out to God for even a thread of hope.

That moment didn’t erase the pain but it did begin a story of redemption.

Now the author of The Girl on the Bathroom Floor and the host of the Arise with Amber podcast, Amber joins me on Real Talk with Rachel Awtrey for a raw, hope-filled conversation about loss, faith, and learning how to live with both grief and joy in the same breath. We talk about how God met her in the darkest place, how healing didn’t come all at once, and how beauty can still rise from ashes.

This episode of Real Talk with Rachel Awtrey is tender, powerful, and deeply sacred. If you’ve ever wondered where God is when your life falls apart—this conversation is for you.
