  1. 168. The Evolution of our Homeschool & the Principles that Guide It

    Season 4, Episode 15

    Show notes

I never planned to homeschool. I'm a former middle school teacher, and the only homeschool family I knew growing up joined a polygamist group. Yet in 2020 I pulled my kids out of public school, and on our very first day everyone ended up in tears. In this episode I walk you through how our homeschool has changed over six years. We went from rigid curriculum to deschooling, then to child-led learning and concurrent enrollment, and finally to the vintage curriculum we use today: McGuffey Readers, Ray's Arithmetic and Harvey's Grammar. I also share the five principles I now consider non-negotiable for a successful homeschool. I call them the Old School Advantage. Whether you're new to homeschooling, wondering about unschooling, or homeschooling teens, this one's for you.

  4. 165. Struggling Reader? 3 Things We Do Every Week (Including a 190-Year-Old Reader)

    Season 4, Episode 12

    Show notes

Is your child a "good reader" who can't actually tell you what they just read? A distressed mama asked me in the comments how we handle struggling readers, so in Episode 165 I'm walking through the 3 things we do in our homeschool for reading comprehension:

    1. Read-alouds β€” chosen by me, read purely for the joy of the story (no worksheets!) 2. Quiet Reading Time (QRT) β€” 30 minutes a day, at the level where your child can actually succeed, even if that means dropping back to Frog and Toad 3. The McGuffey Readers β€” the 190-year-old readers we use for oral reading, spelling, vocabulary, narration and comprehension questions in 10–15 minutes

I also share how my "best reader in the class" son broke down in tears over a chapter book, and what I learned about meeting kids where they are.

  5. 164. Have We Confused Schooling With Learning? with Dr. Pablo Riboldi

    Season 4, Episode 11

    Show notes

What happens when an instructional-science PhD decides grades and tests may be getting in the way of real learning?

Dr. Pablo Riboldi joins me to explain why he built a homeschool program without traditional grades or tests, why he returned to classical texts like Euclid's Elements, and why students should become responsible for their own education.

We talk about vintage textbooks, the flipped classroom, intellectual honesty, teaching children to think, and a radically different definition of what it means to be educated.

And if you've ever worried that you're not qualified to homeschool your children, stay until the end. His message to parents is one you need to hear.

  13. 158. Why we should NEVER stop reading aloud to children.

    Season 4, Episode 5

    Show notes

Why do families stop reading aloud once children learn to read for themselves?

In this episode, we make the case that we may be stopping far too soon.

We explore the history of reading aloud, oral recitation, Charles Dickens' public readings, the McGuffey Readers, and modern research on vocabulary, language development, story listening, and shared reading.

You'll also hear why reading aloud should complementβ€”not replaceβ€”phonics and independent reading, how it can become a bridge into books children aren't ready to tackle alone, and why shared stories naturally lead to conversations about courage, loyalty, justice, sacrifice, forgiveness, and human nature.

Plus, you'll get practical read-aloud recommendations for children from preschool through the teenage years and simple advice for creating a family reading culture without turning every book into another school assignment.

Your child may be able to read the book alone.

But that doesn't necessarily mean you should stop reading it together.
