    Smart Travel Podcast

In this YouTube bonus episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke reviews American Airlines' new Flagship Business Class aboard a Boeing 787-9, flying nonstop from Auckland to Dallas Fort Worth. After 33 days exploring Hong Kong, Fiji, and New Zealand on their honeymoon, DeAndre and Taryn were ready for a comfortable journey home. With private suites, lie flat seats, and premium amenities, the 13 hour flight promised a luxurious experience, but not everything went according to plan.

The journey started strong at the Qantas Lounge in Auckland, followed by an impressive onboard experience featuring spacious Flagship Suites, sliding privacy doors, premium entertainment, comfortable bedding, and pajamas. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the aircraft's quality. Chaotic boarding, rushed meal service, and inconsistent crew attention left them disappointed, despite enjoying some of their best sleep on a long haul flight.

After landing, the American Airlines Flagship Lounge in Dallas helped redeem the experience with excellent dining, drinks, and comfortable spaces. DeAndre also shares how they booked two business class tickets worth approximately $6,000 for just 218,000 Qantas Points and $160 in taxes, using American Express Membership Rewards instead of paying cash or redeeming significantly more American Airlines miles.

Ultimately, American Airlines delivered an outstanding premium cabin but fell short on service. Despite the frustrations, the comfortable seats, excellent lounges, and incredible points redemption made the experience worthwhile. The episode offers valuable insights into booking business class with points and miles while setting realistic expectations for premium airline travel.

    Key takeaways:

    • Choose the right campervan: A comfortable layout, fixed bed, bathroom, and adequate storage make a major difference.
    • Prepare for driving challenges: Left side driving, narrow roads, roundabouts, and one lane bridges require extra attention.
    • Allow more travel time: Mountain roads and campervan driving can make journeys longer than navigation apps suggest.
    • Book campsites and ferries early: Popular locations and Interislander crossings require advance planning.
    • CamperMate is essential: The app helps locate campsites, dump stations, facilities, and traveler reviews.
    • Understand daily maintenance: Water refills, waste disposal, electricity, and organizing the vehicle become part of the routine.
    • Don't overpack the itinerary: More time in fewer destinations creates a more relaxed and rewarding road trip.
    • Campervan travel is worth trying: The flexibility, scenery, and shared experience made it a memorable honeymoon adventure.

This week's Quick Hits is packed with major changes across the points and miles world, and some of them could seriously affect how travelers maximize their credit card benefits. DeAndre Coke kicks things off with an update to MaxMyPoint, which now supports award searches for Leading Hotels of the World properties, before diving into one of the biggest developments of the week. American Express has officially confirmed that starting January 1, 2027, Platinum Card members will need to book a minimum two-night stay through Fine Hotels + Resorts to use their $300 semiannual hotel credit. DeAndre explains why this is such a significant change, especially for travelers who have relied on single-night luxury stays or stacked multiple Platinum credits across consecutive bookings.

The changes don't stop there. American Express is also adjusting how new Membership Rewards accounts are linked, while Airbnb is introducing new checkout rules that prevent hosts from requiring guests to complete certain cleaning tasks. Citi and American Airlines are refreshing their AAdvantage Platinum Select and Business credit cards with higher annual fees and additional benefits, and Citi has added Copa Airlines ConnectMiles as a new 1:1 transfer partner. DeAndre also highlights a StubHub promotion that can be stacked with Chase Sapphire Reserve credits, Rakuten rewards changes affecting Bank of America credit card applications, and several opportunities to earn additional points through shopping and travel.

Bilt Rewards takes center stage with another major program overhaul coming in 2027. The company is eliminating its 4% flexible Bilt Cash earning option for new cardholders, changing expiration rules, and limiting certain hotel redemptions. DeAndre breaks down what existing cardholders need to know and why the latest changes have left him questioning the program's direction. He also covers November's Rent Day offers, including hotel discounts and boosted gift card redemptions, which may disappoint members hoping for another massive airline transfer bonus.

The episode wraps up with several limited-time opportunities, including transfer bonuses from Citi to Cathay Pacific and Capital One to Virgin Atlantic, an Emirates promotion that awards miles for time spent in Dubai, and a Hyatt promotion offering bonus Aeroplan points on qualifying stays. DeAndre also shares updates on the upcoming BoldlyGo Live Miami meetup and Taryn's Travel Things, the new weekly series featuring practical travel products and packing tips.

    Key takeaways:

    • Amex Platinum Hotel Credit Changes in 2027: Starting January 1, 2027, Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings will require a minimum two-night stay to qualify for the $300 semiannual Platinum hotel credit, eliminating the popular single-night strategy.
    • One Last Chance to Stack Amex Hotel Credits: Eligible cardholders can still use their current hotel credits for qualifying single-night bookings made before the end of 2026, including reservations for travel in 2027.
    • Amex Membership Rewards Accounts No Longer Link Automatically: Newly opened Amex cards may have separate Membership Rewards accounts unless they are linked during the application process or through customer service afterward.
    • MaxMyPoint Adds Leading Hotels of the World: Travelers can now search award availability, compare points and cash rates, and set alerts across more than 400 independent luxury hotels.
    • Airbnb Introduces New Checkout Rules: Starting November 20, hosts generally cannot require guests to wash dishes, strip beds, or take out the trash before checkout.
    • Citi AAdvantage Credit Cards Get More Expensive: Starting January 24, the Platinum Select and Business cards will increase their annual fees from $99 to $150 while introducing additional benefits and bonus categories.
    • Citi Adds Copa Airlines ConnectMiles: Citi ThankYou Points can now transfer to Copa ConnectMiles at a 1:1 ratio, opening additional Star Alliance redemption opportunities, including flights on United, Lufthansa, SWISS, ANA, and Turkish Airlines.
    • StubHub Offers Another Opportunity to Stack Rewards: Through November 15, eligible purchases of $150 or more can receive $20 off through Payz, potentially stacking with Chase Sapphire Reserve StubHub credits, Payz rewards, and shopping portals.
    • Rakuten Changes Bank of America Card Offers: Bank of America credit card applications through Rakuten are now limited to cash back, removing the option to earn Bilt points or Amex Membership Rewards through those offers.
    • Bilt Announces Another Major 2027 Overhaul: New cardholders will lose access to the 4% flexible Bilt Cash option, while existing cardholders must actively elect to keep it before their renewal date. Bilt Cash will also receive a rolling 12-month expiration period.
    • Bilt Hotel Redemptions Become More Restricted: Bilt Cash redemptions toward qualifying hotel stays will generally be limited to twice annually, although the program is adding rental car elite status matches and new daily rewards features.
    • November Bilt Rent Day Focuses on Hotels and Gift Cards: Members can receive up to $150 off eligible hotel bookings, while gift card redemption bonuses range from 25% for Blue members to 100% for Platinum members.
    • New Airline Transfer Bonuses: Citi is offering a 10% transfer bonus to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles through November 14, while Capital One has a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic through November 20.
    • Emirates Rewards Time Spent in Dubai: Registered Skywards members can earn one mile for every minute spent in Dubai on eligible Emirates or flydubai itineraries booked by November 5 for travel through December 13.
    • Hyatt Members Can Earn Bonus Aeroplan Points: World of Hyatt members can earn 1.5 Aeroplan points per dollar on qualifying Hyatt stays through February 14 by linking their accounts and registering by November 11.

  3. How Devon Gimbel Got Air France Platinum Status in Just 3 Months - And Why It Paid off BIG (Ep. 150)

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke welcomes back points and miles expert Devon Gimbel for a fascinating conversation about rethinking loyalty programs and the surprising benefits of airline elite status. After years of focusing primarily on Hyatt Globalist status, Devon completely changed her approach in 2026, strategically pursuing American Airlines Platinum Pro, Bilt Platinum, and Air France Flying Blue Platinum. She explains why these programs deserve a closer look, how family travel has influenced her decisions, and why the real value of status often extends far beyond complimentary upgrades.

The conversation explores how Devon maintains Hyatt Globalist through a combination of hotel stays and credit card spending, why American Airlines Platinum Pro is particularly valuable for its Oneworld Emerald benefits, and how Bilt Platinum became the foundation of an entirely new airline status strategy. By leveraging a Bilt status match, the Air France KLM credit card, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel purchases, Devon managed to reach Flying Blue Platinum status in just three months.

The results were remarkable. When comparing business class award availability between Chicago and major European hubs, Devon found only 35 dates with at least one saver-level seat through her comparison search. However, after logging into her Flying Blue Platinum account, she found 184 dates with availability for at least four passengers. A similar search from Los Angeles revealed an equally dramatic difference, opening up possibilities for families who previously struggled to find multiple business class award seats on the same flight.

DeAndre and Devon also break down the actual costs of pursuing elite status, the benefits that can make those investments worthwhile, and the strategies Devon is considering to maintain Flying Blue Platinum in future years. More importantly, they challenge experienced travelers to reconsider the assumptions guiding their points and miles strategies. As loyalty programs continue to evolve, the opportunities that once seemed unnecessary might become some of the most valuable tools in your travel arsenal.

(61:15) 184 vs. 35: The Massive Difference in Business Class Award Availability

(65:00) Maintaining Flying Blue Platinum and Rethinking Your Points Strategy

    Key Highlights:

    • Airline Elite Status May Be More Valuable Than You Think: Certain airline programs offer meaningful benefits beyond upgrades, including expanded award availability, waived fees, and greater booking flexibility.
    • Flying Blue Platinum Unlocks More Award Availability: Devon found 184 dates with at least four business class award seats from Chicago to Europe through her Platinum account, compared with just 35 dates showing at least one saver seat in her comparison search.
    • Los Angeles Shows a Similar Difference: Her searches revealed 121 dates with availability for at least four passengers through Flying Blue Platinum, compared with only seven dates with saver-level availability in her comparison search.
    • Flying Blue Platinum in Just Three Months: Devon used a combination of Bilt Platinum status, a Flying Blue status match, credit card benefits, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel purchases to reach Platinum status in approximately three months.
    • Bilt Platinum Was the Key: Matching Bilt Platinum to Flying Blue Gold helped Devon bypass part of the traditional qualification process and significantly reduce the remaining requirements.
    • Sustainable Aviation Fuel Can Earn Elite Status: Devon spent approximately $2,200 to $2,300 on qualifying Sustainable Aviation Fuel purchases to accelerate her Flying Blue Platinum qualification.
    • Flying Blue Platinum Offers Additional Benefits: Beyond award availability, Platinum members can benefit from complimentary seat selection, waived award change and cancellation fees, and increased booking flexibility.
    • Hyatt Globalist Remains a Priority: Devon has maintained Hyatt Globalist since 2021 by combining approximately 30 to 35 hotel nights annually with elite qualifying nights earned through credit card spending.
    • American Airlines Platinum Pro Is a Sweet Spot: The status provides Oneworld Emerald benefits, including valuable advantages when flying partner airlines such as British Airways and Qatar Airways.
    • Family Travel Makes Status More Valuable: Complimentary seat selection, reduced fees, and access to multiple business class award seats can create substantial savings for families traveling together.
    • Elite Status Is an Investment: Devon recommends evaluating the financial costs, spending requirements, and opportunity costs against the benefits travelers will realistically use.
    • Maintaining Platinum May Be Easier: Once Flying Blue Platinum is achieved, the annual requalification requirement is 300 Experience Points, and XP rollover or qualifying credit card activity may help.

    Smart Travel Podcast

This week's Quick Hits kicks off with DeAndre Coke reflecting on an incredible weekend at Points Travel Festival Chicago, where he connected with BoldlyGo community members, hosted an unforgettable group dinner, and spoke to a packed room of points and miles enthusiasts. After sharing a helpful clarification about Hyatt's current bonus points promotion, he dives into some major loyalty program changes, starting with Rove adding JetBlue TrueBlue as a new 1:1 transfer partner with a limited-time 20% bonus. Bilt has also added JetBlue, raising speculation about a potentially massive Rent Day transfer bonus.

The biggest news comes from Southwest Airlines, which is making a significant change to its popular Companion Pass program. Starting in 2027, credit card welcome bonuses will no longer count toward earning the Companion Pass. Instead, travelers will need to qualify through Southwest's new Platinum Elite status, requiring 140,000 qualifying points or 100 flights. However, there's still one final opportunity to take advantage of the existing credit card strategy by opening an eligible Southwest card before December 2. Southwest is also introducing new international award partners, including Etihad, Icelandair, and China Airlines.

Elsewhere, World of Hyatt members can now transfer points between accounts online, while Explorist and Globalist members have access to an Air Canada Aeroplan elite status challenge. Japan Airlines has launched a 30% award discount, creating opportunities to book economy flights between Japan and North America for fewer than 19,000 miles or business class flights between Japan and Europe for as little as 38,500 miles. Combined with current Citi ThankYou and Rove transfer bonuses, these deals could become even more attractive. DeAndre also covers a potential change to how the IRS processes credit card payments and exciting new Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines nonstop routes from Seattle to Osaka and Tahiti, both scheduled to launch in 2027.

    Timestamps:

(00:00) Intro: Points Travel Festival Chicago and the BoldlyGo Community

    (02:45) Hyatt's 3,000 Bonus Points Promotion Explained

(04:02) Rove and Bilt Add JetBlue as a Transfer Partner

(05:03) Southwest's Major Companion Pass Changes for 2027

(06:12) Southwest Adds New International Award Partners

(06:32) Hyatt and Aeroplan Introduce an Elite Status Challenge

(08:00) Hyatt Finally Allows Online Points Transfers

(08:34) Japan Airlines Award Sale and Massive Transfer Bonuses

(09:50) IRS Credit Card Payment Changes

(11:00) New Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines Routes to Osaka and Tahiti

    Key takeaways:

    • Southwest Companion Pass Changes in 2027: Credit card welcome bonuses will no longer count toward earning the Companion Pass. Travelers will instead need Platinum Elite status, requiring 140,000 qualifying points or 100 flights.
    • One Final Companion Pass Opportunity: Opening an eligible Southwest credit card by December 2 could still allow travelers to use the welcome bonus toward a Companion Pass valid through the end of 2027.
    • Southwest Adds International Award Partners: Etihad, Icelandair, and China Airlines are joining Southwest's international award partner lineup, creating new potential redemption opportunities.
    • Rove Adds JetBlue TrueBlue: Rove now supports 1:1 transfers to JetBlue with a 20% transfer bonus through November 14.
    • Bilt Adds JetBlue: Bilt has introduced JetBlue as a 1:1 transfer partner. DeAndre speculates that a future Rent Day promotion could feature an unusually large JetBlue transfer bonus, although nothing has been confirmed.
    • Hyatt's 3,000 Point Promotion Is More Flexible Than Expected: Members earn 3,000 bonus points for every three qualifying nights in total, even when those nights are spread across different stays, up to 36,000 bonus points.
    • Hyatt and Aeroplan Status Challenge: Hyatt Explorist and Globalist members can enroll in a 90-day Air Canada elite status challenge. Eligible paid flights are required, and participants do not receive temporary status during the challenge.
    • Hyatt Finally Allows Online Points Transfers: Members can now transfer Hyatt points between accounts online, with separate annual limits of 525,000 points sent and received.
    • Japan Airlines Award Sale: JAL is offering a 30% discount on select awards, including Japan to North America economy flights for under 19,000 miles and Japan to Europe business class for as little as 38,500 miles one way. Bookings must be made by October 31, with restrictions and potential fuel surcharges.
    • Citi and Rove Transfer Bonuses: Citi ThankYou is offering a 30% transfer bonus to Japan Airlines through October 24, while Rove is offering a 50% bonus through October 31, potentially reducing the points needed for discounted JAL awards.
    • IRS Credit Card Payment Changes: A newly published rule allows the IRS to contract directly with card processors, although fees would still apply and no implementation date has been announced.
    • New Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines Routes: New nonstop Seattle to Osaka service is planned for May 2027, followed by Seattle to Papeete, Tahiti, in June 2027. Both routes are expected to use Hawaiian Airlines A330 aircraft with lie-flat business class seats.

From her early adventures in pharmacy school to flying Qatar Airways Qsuites and Emirates First Class, Taylor shares how she and her husband have made travel a priority without letting points dictate where they go.

One highlight of the conversation is Taylor's recent trip to the Dolomites in northern Italy. She explains how she built the itinerary around an Emirates business-class redemption from New York to Milan, upgraded to First Class with points, and paired award stays with carefully chosen cash bookings at hotels truly worth the splurge. From Lake Como to the dramatic mountain landscapes of the Dolomites, Taylor makes a compelling case for using points to reduce the cost of a trip rather than expecting every part of the experience to be free. She also explains why positioning flights, planning far in advance, and understanding airline partnerships have become essential to her strategy.

Then things get interesting. Taylor breaks down how a British Airways shopping portal promotion offering 250 Avios per dollar at Kate Spade resulted in approximately 400,000 Avios after a roughly $1,600 purchase. She also shares how a targeted Barclays personal loan offer let her earn 33,000 Alaska Atmos points for about $18 in interest after quickly repaying the loan. Beyond these unusual earning opportunities, the conversation explores the importance of welcome bonuses, shopping portals, smart financial decisions, and knowing when a promotion is worth pursuing.

The episode wraps with practical advice on taking better travel photos, making the most of limited PTO, and building a travel calendar around work and family commitments. Taylor explains how she and her husband combine purchased vacation days, unpaid leave, holiday weekends, and shorter trips to make room for multiple adventures every year. Her biggest takeaway is simple: points and miles should support the life you want to live, not force you into trips or redemptions that don't fit your goals.

(53:20) Maximizing PTO With Purchased Vacation Days and Unpaid Leave

(56:00) Where to Follow Taylor and Her Final Travel Philosophy

    Key Highlights:

    • 400,000 Avios From Kate Spade: Taylor took advantage of a British Airways shopping portal promotion offering 250 Avios per dollar at Kate Spade. A purchase of approximately $1,600 eventually earned her around 400,000 Avios.
    • 33,000 Atmos Points From a Personal Loan: A targeted Barclays offer awarded one Atmos point per dollar borrowed. Taylor took out a $33,000 loan, repaid it almost immediately, and earned 33,000 points while paying approximately $18 in interest. This was a specific targeted opportunity, not a broadly available or risk-free strategy.
    • Prioritize Experiences Over Redemption Values: Taylor doesn't chase the highest cents-per-point number on every booking. Her goal is to make points stretch further while still enjoying the hotels, destinations, and activities she actually wants.
    • Plan Travel Far in Advance: She often plans trips a year or more ahead, working backward from available PTO and preferred travel dates to determine which points and miles she needs to earn.
    • Positioning Flights Unlock Better Awards: Even though Charlotte is an American Airlines hub, Taylor regularly positions to cities like New York, Washington, Atlanta, and Miami to access better international premium cabin redemptions.
    • Emirates First Class to Milan: Taylor and her husband booked Emirates business class from JFK to Milan for 87,000 points per person plus approximately $102 in taxes and fees, then upgraded to First Class for an additional 39,000 points each at check-in.
    • The Dolomites Are Worth the Splurge: Taylor combined points hotels, free night certificates, and paid luxury stays during her northern Italy adventure, including a bucket list hotel experience that inspired the entire trip.
    • Hotel Points Aren't Always the Best Choice: In destinations with limited award availability, paying cash for a special property can be more rewarding than forcing a points redemption that doesn't fit the itinerary.
    • Shopping Portals Can Be Extremely Valuable: Taylor regularly checks Rakuten, Capital One Offers, and other shopping portals before purchases, using spending she already planned to earn additional rewards.
    • Learn Transfer Partners and Airline Alliances: Understanding how airline partnerships work can open up better redemptions and help travelers recognize valuable opportunities when they appear.
    • Maximize Every PTO Day: Taylor and her husband use purchased vacation days, unpaid leave, and carefully planned holiday weekends to fit several major vacations and shorter trips into their schedules.
    • Travel Photography Doesn't Require Expensive Gear: Simple techniques like cleaning your phone lens, using the rear camera, shooting at 0.5x when appropriate, and taking photos during golden hour can dramatically improve travel pictures.
    • Points Should Fit Your Lifestyle: Taylor's philosophy is to make points and miles work for her travel goals, finances, and schedule rather than changing those priorities to chase a particular redemption.

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this YouTube bonus episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke and Taryn trade luxury hotels and resorts for a completely different kind of adventure: exploring New Zealand by campervan. As the final chapter of their month-long honeymoon, they take on their first motorhome road trip, discovering the freedom, challenges, and unexpected realities of traveling with their accommodations on wheels.

The episode begins with their decision to rent a premium campervan from Wilderness Motorhomes. DeAndre explains why they chose a more comfortable vehicle with a fixed bed, private bathroom, kitchen, plenty of storage, and unlimited Wi-Fi. He also walks through the rental process, vehicle orientation, insurance considerations, and practical details that first time campervan travelers should understand before hitting the road.

Once the journey begins, the learning curve becomes real. Driving on the left side of the road, navigating narrow mountain highways, managing roundabouts, and crossing one lane bridges all require extra attention. DeAndre also shares their experience taking the Interislander ferry between New Zealand's islands, along with the importance of booking ferry crossings and campsites well in advance.

Beyond the driving, the episode explores what daily campervan life actually looks like, from preparing meals and organizing personal belongings to managing water tanks, electricity, waste disposal, and campground facilities. DeAndre highlights how the CamperMate app made finding campsites and essential services much easier, while their rental company's support helped simplify the experience.

Ultimately, the biggest lesson wasn't about operating the campervan. It was about slowing down. Their ambitious itinerary left less time to enjoy certain destinations, but the experience gave them a new appreciation for road trips, flexibility, and traveling at their own pace. By the end, DeAndre explains why campervan travel offered a memorable alternative to traditional hotel stays and became a fitting conclusion to their New Zealand honeymoon.

    Smart Travel Podcast

This week's Quick Hits comes straight from the Admirals Club lounge in Honolulu, where DeAndre Coke is wrapping up an incredible Hawaii anniversary trip before heading to Points Travel Festival Chicago. Before diving into the latest points and miles news, he shares a special shoutout to BoldlyGo listeners Dan and Megan, whom he met at the Grand Hyatt Kauai. Then it's straight into several important credit card, hotel, and airline loyalty updates, starting with an opportunity to earn 15,000 American Airlines miles through the AAdvantage Business program and an extended promotion that could help Citi AAdvantage Business cardholders earn elite status faster.

The biggest potential shakeup involves the American Express Platinum Card. Information reportedly discovered on an Amex test server suggests the card could add a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit while introducing a two-night minimum stay requirement for its hotel credit starting in 2027. DeAndre explains why this rumored change could make the benefit significantly harder to maximize, especially for travelers who currently stack credits across multiple cards for single-night hotel stays. Meanwhile, United Airlines is moving toward a spending-focused elite status system by eliminating flight segments as a qualification path, and Chase has clarified that elite night credits from certain IHG credit cards can stack, potentially giving cardholders 35 elite nights annually before checking into a hotel.

Other updates include Marriott testing an upgrade waitlist inside its app, Cathay Pacific temporarily suspending Japan Airlines award bookings through Asia Miles, targeted 75,000 point Chase Sapphire Reserve upgrade offers, and reports that Lululemon gift card purchases may no longer trigger the Amex Platinum quarterly credit. DeAndre closes with a preview of the upcoming Chicago conference, the BoldlyGo Miami meetup, and more Hawaii travel content coming soon.

(06:39) IHG Credit Cards Can Stack Up to 35 Elite Nights Annually

(07:24) Amex Lululemon Gift Card Changes and Final Travel Updates

    Key takeaways:

    • 15,000 Free AAdvantage Business Miles: New members can register for the free AAdvantage Business program using promo code GET15K by October 31 to receive 15,000 bonus miles without additional activity, according to the offer discussed.
    • Citi AAdvantage Business Loyalty Points: An extended targeted promotion through 2028 allows eligible primary cardholders to earn matching Loyalty Points from authorized user spending, while authorized users also earn Loyalty Points.
    • Marriott Tests Upgrade Visibility: Marriott is testing an in-app upgrade list that allows Gold Elite members and above to see their position before arrival, with plans to expand to more properties in the United States and Canada.
    • Cathay Pacific Suspends JAL Awards: Asia Miles redemptions on Japan Airlines have been temporarily suspended, although previously issued award tickets remain valid.
    • 75K Chase Sapphire Upgrade Offers: Some Sapphire Preferred cardholders are receiving targeted offers of 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points for upgrading to the Sapphire Reserve and spending $4,000 by December 15.
    • Amex Platinum Changes Are Rumored: The Platinum Card could introduce a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit while requiring a minimum two-night stay for its hotel credit starting in 2027. These changes have not been confirmed.
    • United Changes Elite Status Qualification: United is moving away from flight segment qualification and toward Premier Qualifying Points, making spending an even more important factor in earning elite status.
    • IHG Credit Card Elite Nights Stack: Chase has reportedly clarified that qualifying elite night credits from the IHG Premier Select and IHG Business cards can stack, potentially providing 35 elite nights per year.
    • IHG Milestone Rewards Become More Accessible: Those stacked elite nights can count toward milestone rewards, potentially helping cardholders unlock benefits such as suite upgrades and lounge membership.
    • Lululemon Gift Card Warning: Reports suggest that in-store Lululemon gift card purchases may no longer trigger the Amex Platinum $75 quarterly credit, so cardholders should be cautious about relying on this method.

Malta may be small enough to explore by car in just a few hours, but there's a lot more to this Mediterranean destination than its size suggests. In Part 2 of their Turkey, Malta, and Switzerland trip recap, DeAndre and Taryn share everything they learned during four days in Malta, from navigating left-side driving and choosing the right hotel to discovering beautiful beaches, historic cities, incredible restaurants, and some unforgettable experiences on the water. They break down their stay at Hyatt Regency Malta, including how they booked a suite using 54,000 Hyatt points, and explain why the location, dining scene, and easy access to nightlife made it a great base for exploring the island.

The adventure continues with a diving trip to Gozo, a private boat excursion to the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon, and visits to Mdina and Valletta. Along the way, DeAndre and Taryn share practical advice on renting a car, using Bolt, avoiding parking fines, planning a shorter private boat tour instead of a crowded group excursion, and making the most of Malta's food and cocktail scene. They also explain why four days felt like enough time for their visit, even though Malta has enough history, beaches, and activities to fill a much longer trip.

From Malta, they turn their journey home into a three-night stopover in Zurich using Air Canada Aeroplan, adding the stop for just 5,000 points per person. They stay at the Park Hyatt Zurich with Chase points, take the train to explore Lucerne, enjoy Swiss fondue and Zurich's cocktail bars, and discover firsthand how expensive Switzerland can be. Finally, they share their experience flying SWISS business class back to New York, a redemption worth approximately $13,000 in cash that cost them 140,000 points plus $260. Between the incredible value of their flights, the challenges of navigating unfamiliar destinations, and the experiences they would repeat or skip, this episode is packed with practical advice for planning a memorable multi-country trip using points and miles.

    Key Highlights:

    • Four Days in Malta Worked Well: DeAndre and Taryn found four days sufficient to enjoy several of Malta's highlights, although the island offers enough history and activities for a week or more.
    • Driving Requires Preparation: Malta drives on the left, and narrow roads, roundabouts, parking restrictions, and speed cameras can make renting a car more stressful than expected.
    • Hyatt Regency Malta Offers Great Points Value: Their four-night suite stay would have cost approximately $2,000 but was booked for 54,000 Hyatt points transferred from Chase.
    • Gozo Is Worth Considering for Diving: Their experience with Scuba Kings was positive, although they felt that travelers staying on Malta's main island could find excellent diving options without making the ferry journey.
    • A Private Blue Lagoon Tour Can Be Worth It: Their private boat excursion covered the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon in approximately two hours, avoiding the crowds and longer itineraries of larger group tours.
    • Don't Skip Mdina and Valletta: Mdina offers incredible historic architecture and a medieval atmosphere, while Valletta delivers beautiful streets, waterfront views, and a fantastic cocktail scene.
    • Malta Has an Impressive Food Scene: From Japanese cuisine and mezcal bars to caviar, oysters, and fine dining, Malta exceeded their expectations for food and nightlife.
    • Aeroplan Stopovers Add Incredible Value: They added a three-night Zurich stopover to their journey home for just 10,000 additional Aeroplan points total, making it possible to explore Switzerland without booking a completely separate award itinerary.
    • Zurich Is Extremely Expensive: Dining, drinks, hotels, and everyday purchases were significantly more expensive than in Malta or Turkey, making points bookings and Hyatt Globalist benefits especially useful.
    • Park Hyatt Zurich on Points: Their three-night stay cost 135,000 Hyatt points instead of about $3,268 in cash, though the hotel experience didn't fully meet their expectations.
    • Lucerne Is an Excellent Day Trip: A scenic train journey from Zurich brought them to Lucerne, where they enjoyed beautiful architecture, waterfront scenery, and traditional Swiss fondue.
    • SWISS Business Class Was a Valuable Redemption: Their return flight cost 140,000 points plus $260 for two passengers instead of approximately $13,000 in cash, delivering over nine cents per point in value.
    • Flexibility Matters When Booking Awards: Their return positioning flight plans changed, showing why travelers should understand airline cancellation policies and compare rebooking costs against keeping an existing award.

This week's Quick Hits comes straight from Maui, where DeAndre and Taryn are celebrating their first wedding anniversary at the Andaz Maui at Wailea. Between diving, enjoying their ocean view suite, and preparing for the next stops in Kauai and Oahu, DeAndre catches up on some major developments in the points and miles world. First up is an exciting update to Creddy, the credit card benefits tracking app that the BoldlyGo community helped beta test. Creddy now offers optional Plaid integration that can automatically connect credit cards and track eligible benefits, potentially eliminating much of the manual work involved in managing multiple cards. DeAndre also highlights several October transfer bonuses, including Rove bonuses to Japan Airlines, Flying Blue, and Qatar Airways Avios, along with new American Express transfer promotions.

The biggest news is a major change to Bilt Rewards. Starting January 1, Bilt's transfer ratio to World of Hyatt will drop from 1:1 to 4:3, meaning a 60,000 point Hyatt redemption will require 80,000 Bilt points instead of 60,000. DeAndre explains why this is particularly frustrating alongside Hyatt's recent award pricing increases and why Chase may become an even more important source of Hyatt points. On the positive side, Hyatt has returned to Capital One Shopping and Capital One Offers, creating opportunities to earn additional rewards on eligible direct bookings.

There is also great news for families using Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards, with a new program offering 20% of points back on eligible award tickets booked for children ages 12 and under. DeAndre wraps up with American Airlines introducing Cash & Miles bookings and two luxury Hilton properties in Mexico transitioning to all-inclusive resorts, potentially creating exciting opportunities for Hilton free night certificate holders.

    Smart Travel Podcast

Cappadocia may be famous for its sunrise hot air balloons, but planning the perfect trip takes more strategy than simply booking a flight and showing up. In Part 1 of their Turkey, Malta, and Switzerland trip recap, DeAndre and Taryn break down their entire Cappadocia experience, including how stranded Turkish Airlines miles inspired the trip, how they used points and credit card benefits to save thousands of dollars, and the lessons they learned after weather nearly ruined one of their biggest bucket list experiences.

The trip started with Turkish Airlines business class from JFK to Istanbul, followed by an overnight airport stay before continuing to Cappadocia. Once there, DeAndre and Taryn stayed at the incredible Argos in Cappadocia, a cave hotel where Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts credits helped significantly reduce their out-of-pocket cost. They share their thoughts on Turkish food and wine, the hotel's underground caves and spa, the best areas to stay, and the activities that made Cappadocia feel like much more than a destination built around balloons.

The biggest lesson came from the hot air balloon experience itself. Their original flight was canceled because of weather, and conditions remained bad the following morning. Because they had intentionally left multiple mornings available, they eventually got the experience they traveled all that way for. They explain why travelers should plan at least three mornings in Cappadocia, why the earliest sunrise flight matters, what the balloon ride actually feels like, and why having backup activities can turn a canceled flight into another memorable day. From horseback riding through Cappadocia's valleys to Turkish Night, shopping, local food, and watching Balloon Fest, this episode is a practical guide to building a Cappadocia itinerary that does not depend on everything going perfectly.

(45:00) Why You Should Always Book the Sunrise Balloon Flight

(50:00) Horseback Riding, Turkish Night, Shopping and More Cappadocia Experiences

    Key Highlights:

    • Plan Multiple Mornings: DeAndre and Taryn recommend having at least three mornings in Cappadocia if riding in a hot air balloon is a major reason for the trip.
    • Balloon Flights Can Be Canceled: Weather and wind can cancel flights with very little notice, and consecutive cancellation days are absolutely possible.
    • Book the Sunrise Flight: They strongly recommend the earliest balloon departure instead of a later morning flight. The sunrise, colors, and hundreds of balloons in the sky are a huge part of the experience.
    • Stranded Miles Created the Trip: Around 65,000 Turkish Airlines miles from a previous phantom award booking were approaching expiration, giving them the push to finally plan Turkey.
    • $27K Trip for a Fraction of the Cost: The complete Turkey, Malta, and Switzerland itinerary had an estimated cash price of roughly $27,000. They used approximately 518,000 points plus $742 in cash, producing about 5.08 cents per point in value.
    • Positioning With Virgin Atlantic: Their Norfolk to JFK positioning flight cost 12,000 Virgin Atlantic points plus $11 instead of roughly $607 in cash.
    • Turkish Airlines Business Class Delivered: Despite the older 2-3-2 configuration, they enjoyed the food and service and would happily fly the product again.
    • Watch Turkish Baggage Rules: Turkish Airlines was stricter about carry-on weight than they were accustomed to in the United States, resulting in DeAndre having to check his carry-on.
    • Istanbul Airport Strategy Matters: For an overnight connection, they used the landside YOTEL inside Istanbul Airport rather than making the lengthy trip into the city.
    • Amex Credits Saved Hundreds: At Argos in Cappadocia, they stacked Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits across multiple eligible Platinum cards to reduce the cost of their cave hotel stay.
    • Cappadocia Is More Than Balloons: Horseback riding, underground caves, scenic valleys, Turkish Night, shopping, food, wine, and simply watching the balloons from the ground all added to the experience.
    • Have a Backup Plan: When their balloon flight was canceled, they turned the morning into a photoshoot and continued exploring instead of allowing the cancellation to ruin the day.
    • The Balloon Ride Lived Up to the Hype: Despite years of anticipation, the actual flight exceeded expectations and felt like much more than simply checking off a bucket list item.

  11. We Spent $900 on Milford Sound’s Fly–Cruise–Fly — Worth It? [YouTube Bonus]

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this YouTube bonus episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke and Taryn take on one of New Zealand's most iconic experiences: a fly, cruise, fly adventure from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Instead of spending 12 to 13 hours traveling by road, they turn the excursion into an unforgettable five-hour journey across the Southern Alps and through one of the most dramatic landscapes of their entire honeymoon.

The experience comes with a premium price tag of around $900 for two people, covering scenic flights in both directions and a two-and-a-half-hour Milford Sound cruise. DeAndre explains why they chose to spend more on the experience, how saving money on flights and luxury hotels with points and miles gave them more room in their travel budget, and why booking several months ahead is especially important during peak season.

The adventure begins aboard a small Cessna with individual window seats for every passenger. The 45 minute flight becomes an attraction of its own, offering aerial views of glaciers, alpine lakes, waterfalls, mountain ranges, valleys, and even Lord of the Rings filming locations that would be impossible to experience the same way from the road.

Once in Milford Sound, they board the cruise and share practical advice for getting the best views, including heading straight to the upper deck and packing for wind, mist, and rapidly changing conditions. DeAndre also explains why rain isn't necessarily bad news at Milford Sound, since it can create hundreds of temporary waterfalls cascading down the surrounding mountains.

By the end, the verdict is clear: the fly, cruise, fly option wasn't simply a faster way to reach Milford Sound. The flights became two of the most memorable parts of the excursion, making the premium price worthwhile and giving them perspectives they could never have experienced by road or water alone.

(12:13) Scenic Return Flight to Queenstown

(13:27) Essential Milford Sound Planning Tips

(14:24) Final Verdict: Was It Worth $900?

    Key takeaways:

    • Flying saves major time: The experience takes about five hours compared with a 12 to 13 hour road trip.
    • The flight is part of the adventure: Glaciers, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and mountain views make the journey unforgettable.
    • Book early: Scenic flights have limited availability and can fill months ahead during peak season.
    • Weather matters: Flight operations depend heavily on conditions, so itinerary flexibility is important.
    • Head straight to the upper deck: Getting there early provides some of the best unobstructed cruise views.
    • Pack for changing conditions: Wind, rain, waterfall spray, and cooler temperatures can appear quickly.
    • Rain can make Milford Sound better: Wet weather creates dramatic temporary waterfalls throughout the fjord.
    • The $900 price was worth it: The combination of two scenic flights and the cruise delivered one of their favorite honeymoon experiences.

This week’s Quick Hits kicks off with the Southwest Companion Pass season officially underway, giving travelers a chance to start planning one of the most valuable companion benefits in domestic travel. DeAndre also covers a new Hyatt promotion offering 3,000 bonus points for every three qualifying nights, targeted Southwest members unexpectedly receiving 5,000 Rapid Rewards points, and a useful American Airlines app feature that can automatically move travelers into a preferred window or aisle seat when one becomes available.

One of the biggest updates comes from Alaska Airlines and Atmos Rewards. Members can now choose how they want to earn rewards based on miles flown, ticket price, or flight segments for flights beginning January 1. Alaska also announced that eligible Bank of America cardholders will eventually be able to transfer points into Atmos Rewards, with a new debit card and upgrades to the Atmos Rewards Visa Business Card also on the way. Hilton is making news too, with a 10,000 point promotion and rumors of an even higher elite status tier called Black Diamond.

The episode wraps with several opportunities for point travelers. Chase may be preparing to add Qantas and Cathay Pacific as 1:1 transfer partners, while some Sapphire Preferred cardholders are seeing targeted 75,000 point offers to upgrade to the Sapphire Reserve. Even bigger for families, Philippine Airlines is showing as many as eight business class award seats on some flights to Manila, while American Airlines has strong award availability to Peru with as many as seven seats on select dates. DeAndre also shares updates on the BoldlyGo community ahead of Points Travel Festival Chicago and previews his upcoming anniversary trip to Hawaii.

  13. Can Your Retirement Account Pay for Travel? Meet Silo Markets (Ep. 146)

    Smart Travel Podcast

What if your investment portfolio could earn travel rewards without requiring you to spend another dollar on a credit card? In this episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke sits down with Harry, co-founder of Silo Markets, a platform that rewards users with credit card style points simply for holding investments or cash. Silo currently offers 0.5 points per dollar of portfolio value annually, meaning a $100,000 portfolio could generate 50,000 points per year while the underlying investments remain invested.

DeAndre approaches the conversation from two perspectives, as a points and miles enthusiast and as a financial advisor. Together, they dig into how Silo actually works, its membership tiers, supported investment and retirement accounts, how existing investments can be transferred without liquidating positions, and how Silo plans to fund its rewards program. Harry also explains the relationship with Interactive Brokers, where customer assets are actually held, and what would happen to those assets if Silo itself were to shut down.

The conversation gets especially interesting when they explore retirement accounts. Traditional IRAs, rollover IRAs, and Roth IRAs can potentially earn Silo points, creating a way for long-term retirement savings to generate rewards that can be used today without withdrawing the underlying retirement assets. They also discuss Silo's current 1 cent per point cash redemption, travel portal, upcoming transfer partners, break-even points for each membership tier, and why most existing users are currently holding their points in anticipation of airline and hotel transfer partners.

DeAndre and Harry also address some of the biggest questions surrounding a newer financial platform, including account protection, fees, investment control, and how Silo differs from platforms like Symphony. Harry ultimately describes Silo's ambition as building a modern version of Vanguard, but with loyalty rewards layered on top of long-term investing. It is a fascinating look at what could happen when two traditionally separate worlds, investing and points and miles, begin to overlap.

    Key Highlights:

    • Earn Points From Investments: Silo currently offers 0.5 points per dollar of portfolio value annually, paid out monthly.
    • $100K Could Earn 50K Points: A $100,000 qualifying portfolio could generate approximately 50,000 Silo points over a year.
    • Three Membership Tiers: Silo offers Blue, Gold, and Platinum plans with points earning caps based on portfolio size, reaching up to $1 million on the Platinum plan.
    • Up to 500K Points Per Year: A qualifying $1 million portfolio on the Platinum plan could generate up to 500,000 points annually at the current earning rate.
    • Retirement Accounts Qualify: Silo supports traditional IRAs, rollover IRAs, and Roth IRAs, along with individual brokerage accounts. Joint and trust accounts can also be supported by contacting Silo.
    • Transfer Existing Investments: ACATS transfers allow eligible stocks and ETFs to move from another brokerage without requiring investors to sell those positions first.
    • Cash and Travel Redemptions: Points can currently be redeemed for cash at 1 cent each or used through Silo's travel portal covering hundreds of airlines and hotel options.
    • Transfer Partners Are Coming: Harry says direct transfer partners are Silo's biggest current priority, with the company targeting several partners before eventually expanding the roster further.
    • Know Your Break-Even Point: According to Harry, the approximate portfolio levels needed to break even on membership fees through points are $20,000 for Blue, $50,000 for Gold, and $200,000 for Platinum at the current redemption value.
    • Most Users Are Saving Their Points: Harry says 82% of points issued have not yet been redeemed and 80% of customers have never redeemed a point, with many waiting for transfer partners.
    • Retirement Savings Can Generate Rewards Today: One of Silo's most interesting concepts is allowing eligible retirement assets to generate points that can be used separately without withdrawing the underlying retirement funds.
    • Silo Is Self Directed: Investors remain responsible for choosing and managing their own investments rather than having Silo actively manage the portfolio.

This week’s Quick Hits starts with a potentially major development for Chase cardholders. Reports suggest Chase may be tightening approvals for some business cards, particularly the Ink lineup, with certain applicants potentially facing a 3/24 threshold instead of the familiar 5/24 rule. DeAndre breaks down what is known so far, why the reports remain unconfirmed, and what it could mean for small business owners and sole proprietors. He also reminds readers to use expiring Q3 credit card benefits before the end of September.

Transferable points are also moving fast. Citi ThankYou has added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a 1:1 transfer partner and launched a 30% transfer bonus, while Bilt has added Amtrak Guest Rewards as its first rail transfer partner. DeAndre also covers Bilt card upgrade opportunities, Citi’s new once-per-lifetime welcome bonus language on Strata cards, and the approaching changes that will make Chase to Hyatt transfers less valuable for some cardholders starting October 1.

The episode wraps with two useful opportunities for travelers. The Chase Freedom Flex has eliminated foreign transaction fees, making the no annual fee card more useful internationally, while Flying Blue offers an interesting way to earn miles when purchasing eligible Apple products through its dedicated Apple storefront. For anyone considering a new iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods, it could be another opportunity to stack valuable airline miles on a purchase already planned.

    Key takeaways:

    • Chase 3/24 Rumors: Reports suggest Chase may be testing stricter approval requirements for certain business cards, particularly the Ink lineup, although data points remain mixed and Chase has not officially announced a change.
    • Use Your Q3 Credits: September is almost over, making this the final opportunity to use quarterly credits that reset at the end of Q3.
    • Citi Adds Japan Airlines: Citi ThankYou has added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a 1:1 transfer partner and is currently offering a 30% transfer bonus.
    • Watch JAL Expirations: Japan Airlines miles expire after 36 months and cannot be extended, making speculative transfers particularly important to consider carefully.
    • Bilt Adds Amtrak: Bilt Rewards has added Amtrak Guest Rewards as its first rail transfer partner, creating another option for using points to position for trips or travel around the United States.
    • Bilt Card Upgrades: Select Bilt cardholders may now be able to upgrade their cards without a hard credit pull, with some targeted offers reportedly including a bonus.
    • Citi Tightens Bonus Rules: Citi has changed the welcome bonus language on its Strata family, replacing the previous 48 month restriction with once per lifetime language for individual cards.
    • Chase to Hyatt Changes: Starting October 1, some Chase cardholders will receive less than the traditional 1:1 value when transferring Ultimate Rewards points to World of Hyatt.
    • Freedom Flex Gets Better Abroad: The Chase Freedom Flex has eliminated foreign transaction fees while keeping its $0 annual fee and rotating bonus categories.
    • Earn Flying Blue Miles on Apple: Flying Blue’s dedicated Apple storefront can offer miles on eligible Apple purchases, including some newer devices commonly excluded from other shopping portals.

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke sits down with Sagar, founder of Creddy, a new app designed to solve one of the biggest problems for serious points-and-miles travelers: keeping track of everything. As premium credit cards add more monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual credits, it becomes increasingly difficult to remember benefits, annual fees, free night certificates, spending goals, points expirations, and other valuable perks. Creddy brings all of that information together in one place, giving travelers a central dashboard for managing their credit card and loyalty strategy.

This launch is especially meaningful for the BoldlyGo community because members have spent months beta testing Creddy, suggesting features, and helping shape the app before its public release. Sagar walks DeAndre through features including benefit tracking, smart sorting, expiration alerts, keeper card calculations, annual fee tracking, points balances, loyalty programs, vouchers, transfer bonuses, and spending goals. DeAndre also shares how Creddy revealed benefits on cards he didn't even realize existed, while helping him weigh thousands of dollars in annual fees against the value he actually receives.

The conversation also explores where Creddy is heading next, including more automation, additional loyalty integrations, a desktop experience, and potential Plaid connectivity. Sagar explains how community feedback continues to shape the product and shares a special offer for BoldlyGo members. For anyone juggling premium credit cards or trying to make sure expensive annual fees deliver value, Creddy makes an increasingly complicated points-and-miles strategy much easier to manage.

    • Never Miss a Credit: Users can track monthly, quarterly, semiannual, annual, and cardmember year benefits with expiration reminders.
    • Built With BoldlyGo: Members of the BoldlyGo community helped beta test Creddy and suggest features before its official launch.
    • Keeper Card Tracking: Creddy helps compare annual fees against the credits and benefits actually being used to evaluate if a card deserves a long term spot in your wallet.
    • Smart Benefit Tracking: Benefits can be marked as automatic, manually completed, or hidden so users are not overwhelmed by credits that do not require attention.
    • Hidden Card Benefits: Creddy can surface lesser known benefits that cardholders may not realize are included with cards they already have.
    • Loyalty & Certificate Tracking: Users can monitor points balances, expiration dates, free night certificates, companion certificates, and other vouchers.
    • Spending Goals: Creddy can track progress toward welcome bonuses, elite status, free night certificates, and other spending based benefits.
    • Transfer Bonus Tracking: The platform also brings current transfer bonuses into the same ecosystem.
    • More Automation Is Coming: Future plans include additional integrations, desktop functionality, and potentially using Plaid to automate more of the tracking process.

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this YouTube bonus episode of the BoldlyGo Podcast, DeAndre Coke and Taryn begin the New Zealand portion of their 33 day honeymoon with four days in Auckland, but almost everything starts going wrong before they even arrive.

The trouble begins at the airport in Fiji, where they discover they're missing the New Zealand Traveller Declaration just minutes before check-in closes. Slow Wi Fi makes the situation even more stressful, but their Oneworld elite status gives them access to the Fiji Airways business class check in line and extra time to complete the required paperwork.

Getting on the plane turns out to be only the beginning. After arriving in New Zealand, they navigate strict biosecurity procedures, delayed luggage, illness, and other unexpected problems that completely reshape their original Auckland itinerary. Instead of packing their days with sightseeing, Auckland becomes the reset they actually need after nearly three weeks of nonstop travel.

Their stay at Park Hyatt Auckland proves especially valuable during the chaos. The hotel's location, spacious suite, and exceptional service give them a comfortable base while recovering, tracking down luggage, and handling medical issues. They still find time to explore the waterfront and Viaduct Harbour, visit Commercial Bay, and enjoy a standout meal at Hello Beasty.

DeAndre also shares some of the biggest lessons from the experience, including completing New Zealand entry documents early, taking biosecurity seriously, placing trackers in checked luggage, carrying travel insurance, and deliberately building recovery time into longer trips. Auckland may not have gone according to plan, but it became an important reminder that successful travel sometimes means adapting rather than trying to force the original itinerary.

(19:35) Essential Auckland & New Zealand Travel Tips

    Key takeaways:

    • Complete entry documents early: Missing paperwork nearly caused them to miss their flight to New Zealand.
    • Elite status can matter: Oneworld status gave them access to a faster check in experience during a critical moment.
    • Biosecurity is serious: New Zealand has strict arrival procedures travelers need to prepare for.
    • Track every checked bag: Luggage trackers became extremely useful once their bags were delayed.
    • Travel insurance paid off: Coverage helped reimburse expenses and activities lost due to illness and luggage problems.
    • A great hotel adds real value: Park Hyatt Auckland became their recovery base when the trip went sideways.
    • Build recovery time into long trips: Auckland's slower pace helped them reset before Queenstown and their campervan adventure.

This week’s Quick Hits is packed with points and miles updates, starting with a targeted IHG promotion offering 20,000 bonus points after just two qualifying nights. DeAndre also breaks down the newly refreshed Chase Aeroplan Card, which now comes with automatic Aeroplan 25K status, Air Canada credits, and a 15% discount on eligible award flights, but also doubles its annual fee and loses some valuable existing benefits. Other updates include a potential TSA PreCheck pilot allowing full water bottles through security, CardPointers Version 8, a 70% Chase transfer bonus to Marriott, and a delay to Symphony’s anticipated transfer partner launch.

The biggest story comes from Hilton, where elevated Amex Hilton card offers now include free night certificates across multiple cards. DeAndre explains how he and Taryn used a similar Hilton card strategy to accumulate five free night certificates and turn them into an incredible five-night stay at Calala Island in Nicaragua that would otherwise cost around $22,000. The episode wraps with Wyndham’s new four-tier award chart, Qatar Airways reversing its restrictive Avios traveler list policy, and unusually strong business class award availability to Dubai on Emirates and from Paris to New York on Air France.

    Key takeaways:

    • IHG 20K Promotion: Targeted members can earn 20,000 bonus points after two qualifying paid nights within 60 days of registration.
    • Aeroplan Card Refresh: The annual fee increases to $195, but new benefits include Aeroplan 25K status, up to $100 in Air Canada credits, and 15% off eligible awards.
    • TSA Water Bottle Pilot: TSA is reportedly considering allowing PreCheck travelers to bring full water bottles through security at select airports equipped with newer scanners.
    • CardPointers Version 8: The latest update adds improved automatic offer syncing, AI integrations, new widgets, and tools for choosing the best card for a purchase.
    • Symphony Transfer Partners: The anticipated rollout has shifted from early September to approximately late October or early November.
    • Hilton Free Night Certificates: Elevated Hilton card offers make it possible to earn valuable unrestricted free night certificates through multiple cards.
    • $22K Calala Island Stay: DeAndre and Taryn built a strategy around five Hilton free night certificates that could cover an approximately $22,000 five-night stay in Nicaragua.
    • Wyndham Award Changes: Wyndham now prices free nights at 5,000, 15,000, 30,000, or 45,000 points per bedroom per night.
    • Qatar Reverses Restriction: Privilege Club members can once again redeem Avios for other travelers without maintaining a predefined traveler list.
    • Huge Business Class Availability: Emirates is showing up to seven award seats on some North America to Dubai flights, while Air France is showing as many as nine business class seats on select Paris to New York dates.

    Smart Travel Podcast

DeAndre Coke sits down with Carrie Yoder, Creative Director at Frequent Miler, to explore a side of long-term travel that does not always make it onto Instagram. Carrie shares how she and her former partner built a life around travel, points, miles, and extreme flexibility, eventually visiting around 70 countries while spending years living nomadically. What started as an experiment in proving that long-term travel could actually cost less than a traditional lifestyle gradually became their everyday reality.

Carrie takes DeAndre inside the evolution of that lifestyle, from backpacking through Asia on a tight budget to learning how airline miles and hotel points could completely change the way they traveled. She explains why IHG became especially valuable during their nomadic years, how hotel promotions and inexpensive stays helped them build huge points balances, and how points eventually opened the door to experiences that once seemed completely out of reach. But after years of constant movement, travel began to feel different. Once-in-a-lifetime experiences started becoming routine, and Carrie realized she was ready for something she hadn't had in years: a home base.

That realization eventually led her to West Virginia through the Ascend WV program, where she was actually paid to relocate and build a more stationary life. Now, Carrie is entering a completely new chapter. After years of being the P2 in a two-player points strategy, she is learning how to become her own P1, rebuilding her credit card strategy, earning points independently, and deciding what travel looks like when she is no longer traveling simply because she can. The conversation explores travel burnout, identity, solo travel, financial organization, and the surprising challenge of rediscovering travel excitement after seeing so much of the world.

    Key Highlights:

    • Nomadic Life: Carrie spent years traveling full-time and has now visited around 70 countries.
    • Travel Can Become Routine: Even extraordinary destinations can lose some of their magic when constant travel becomes everyday life.
    • IHG Strategy: Cheap stays, promotions, and award opportunities made IHG especially valuable during Carrie's nomadic years.
    • Travel Burnout Is Real: Years of moving constantly eventually left Carrie craving stability, routine, and a permanent home base.
    • Moving to West Virginia: Carrie joined Ascend WV, a program offering financial incentives and other benefits to remote workers who relocate to the state.
    • From P2 to P1: After years of participating in a two player points strategy, Carrie is now building and managing her own credit card and rewards strategy.
    • Rebuilding Credit: Carrie started carefully with a Capital One Savor card while focusing on improving her credit and avoiding unnecessary complexity.
    • Travel With Intention: Carrie's biggest challenge now is deciding where she genuinely wants to travel instead of simply chasing another destination.
    • Points Feel New Again: Building her own balances has brought back some of the excitement and curiosity she experienced when first discovering points and miles.
    • A New Chapter: Carrie's story shows how travel goals and points strategies can evolve dramatically as life changes.

    Smart Travel Podcast

In this special announcement episode, DeAndre Coke introduces the official BoldlyGo Patreon, a new optional way for listeners and community members to support the podcast, videos, blog, WhatsApp community, and other resources BoldlyGo continues to create. Over the years, members of the community have asked how they can contribute directly, but DeAndre explains that he never wanted financial support to determine who gets access to valuable information. With the launch of Patreon, that philosophy is staying exactly the same. Every podcast episode, bonus release, travel strategy, guide, and community resource will continue to be available for free.

DeAndre also shares some of what goes into keeping BoldlyGo growing behind the scenes, from producing the podcast and creating videos to maintaining the website and developing new resources for the points and miles community. Patreon gives those who find value in the content an opportunity to help support that work, with contributions starting at just $1 and no exclusive content tiers or special access based on contribution level.

More importantly, Patreon will also become another way for the BoldlyGo community to give back. Twenty percent of every dollar contributed will be donated to Give Kids The World Village, a nonprofit resort in Kissimmee, Florida that provides cost free vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families. DeAndre's financial planning practice will match those charitable contributions, doubling the impact generated by the community. Supporting through Patreon is completely optional, and listening, sharing, subscribing, leaving reviews, and participating in the community remain equally meaningful ways to help BoldlyGo continue its mission.

If you want to contribute, here’s the BoldlyGo Patreon link.

    Smart Travel Podcast

This week’s Quick Hits covers a relatively quiet week in points and miles news that was interrupted by one major loyalty shakeup. DeAndre starts with an elevated Capital One Venture Rewards offer featuring 75,000 miles plus a $300 hotel credit, followed by a new Bask Bank promotion offering 20,000 bonus AAdvantage miles for eligible new Miles Savings customers. He also highlights an easy path to I Prefer Gold status through AARP, which is available to members 18 and older, and a new Amex Offer that can earn 20,000 Membership Rewards points on qualifying Air France or KLM purchases.

The biggest story of the week is Hyatt’s changing airline loyalty strategy. American Airlines and World of Hyatt are ending their enhanced partnership, bringing an important relationship that dates back several years to a close. Just hours later, Hyatt announced a new long-term partnership with Delta SkyMiles. DeAndre breaks down what is known so far, what benefits may remain during the transition, and why this could matter most for travelers who used the American Airlines partnership to access Hyatt elite status challenges. He also shares how that opportunity helped him earn Globalist status and what he will be watching for as the new Delta-Hyatt relationship develops.

    • AA + Hyatt Partnership Ending: The enhanced American Airlines and World of Hyatt relationship is coming to an end, although some existing benefits will continue during the transition.

    • Elite Members Will Cross Earn: Eligible Hyatt elites will be able to earn Hyatt points on qualifying Delta flights, while Delta Medallion members can earn SkyMiles on qualifying Hyatt stays.
    • Hyatt Status Challenges Could Change: The biggest potential loss may be the Hyatt status challenge opportunities previously available through American Airlines elite status.
    • Globalist Strategy Impact: DeAndre originally earned Hyatt Globalist through one of these 90-day challenges, making this partnership change especially significant for similar travelers.
