Is forest bathing just a wellness trend, or is there real science behind it? The answer is a bit of both.

Forest bathing means spending calm, intentional time among trees. It costs nothing, needs no equipment, and carries almost no risk. No supplements, no subscriptions, no complicated routine. Just you, some trees, and a slower pace.

The practice was popularized by Dr. Qing Li, a physician and researcher in Japan who has studied how time among trees affects the body. His work, along with similar studies, links forest bathing to lower stress, better mood, and possible benefits for heart and immune health. Even a view of greenery from a hospital window has been tied to quicker recovery. It sounds almost too easy, which is exactly why it deserves a closer look.

The evidence is encouraging. Here’s what we’re covering:

    • What forest bathing is and what the research shows
    • How trees may benefit our health, from cleaner air to biophilia
    • Phytoncides, soil microbes, and the calming effect of nature
    • Views of nature, plus the risks and benefits of time outdoors
    • How to practice forest bathing using your five senses
    • Everyday ways to bring nature into your home and routine
    • Quick nature breaks for people short on time

So whether your week is wide open or packed solid, there’s a version of this that fits your life. The full episode walks through every one of these topics in detail, so head over and see what forest bathing can do for you.

Why Do We Eat When We’re Not Hungry?

Have you ever stood in front of the fridge for the third time in one evening, not because you were hungry, but because you were hoping something in there would make you feel better? If so, you’re far from alone. Emotional eating is one of the most common struggles around food, and it’s also one of the most misunderstood. It isn’t about willpower, and it isn’t a character flaw. Usually, there’s something deeper going on.

In this episode, we’re breaking down a conversation on emotional eating, binge eating, and food noise. Our guest is Tricia Nelson, an emotional eating expert who lost 50 pounds by identifying and healing the underlying cause of her emotional eating. Her TEDx talk has more than 3.5 million views, and she is the author of the bestselling book Heal Your Hunger: Seven Simple Steps to End Emotional Eating Now. She also hosts the podcast Confessions of a Binge Eater and has spent over 30 years researching the hidden causes of emotional eating. Her work has been featured on NBC, CBS, KTLA, Fox, and Discovery Health.

Here, we walk through what emotional eating really is, where it sits on a spectrum, how it can cross into binge eating, and a simple framework for understanding what drives the urge. We also cover practical tools you can start using today, and why changing your relationship with food matters whether or not the scale ever moves. Whether you’re curious, concerned, or just want to feel more at peace around food, there’s something here for you.

Everything above comes from a much richer conversation. Tricia shares her own story with honesty and hope, especially for anyone who wants to feel less alone around food. Ready for the full conversation? Press play on the full episode.

Let’s Talk About Sugar (The Real Kind and the Fake Kind)

Sugar gets tossed around for everything: the white stuff in your pantry, the fruit in your bowl, even that pumpkin spice latte we swear is “basically just coffee.” In this episode, we break down what sugar actually is, starting with the four types humans eat (glucose, fructose, sucrose, and lactose). We also show you how to decode total, added, and free sugars on a nutrition label, and why “no added sugar” doesn’t always mean “no sugar.”

From there, we dig into what the evidence really says. Cutting back on sugar leads to about two pounds of weight loss on average, but the more you’re eating to start, the bigger the payoff. Sugary foods can also crowd out the veggies, fruit, beans, and other whole foods your body loves. We’ll also cover artificial and non-nutritive sweeteners, including which ones have raised concerns and when a swap might actually make sense.

    Topics discussed:

    • What Is Sugar, Really? A Quick Breakdown
    • How Much Added Sugar Should You Actually Eat?
    • Sugar Isn’t Good or Bad, It’s All About Being Intentional
    • What the Evidence Says About Sugar (and Why Crowding It Out Works)
    • Artificial vs. Non-Nutritive Sweeteners: What to Know Before You Sip
    • The Sugar Wrap-Up: Moderation, Not Fear

The big theme throughout is being intentional. Sugar isn’t evil, and it can absolutely have a place, whether that’s fuel for an ultra race or a seasonal treat. The goal is simply to know what you’re eating and why, so you can make choices that work for your life.

Ready to find out what’s really hiding in your pantry, your coffee, and your yogurt? Tune in to the full episode for the complete breakdown, and don’t forget to follow, rate, and share it with a friend who’s always asking whether their latte counts as “healthy.”

Could You Be Addicted to Sugar?

Ever told yourself you'd have just a few cookies, and then somehow the whole row was gone? Or put the ice cream back in the freezer, only to keep thinking about it until you finally gave in?

If so, you're not alone. Today's guest says sugar and ultra-processed food can pull on the brain harder than willpower can handle. This week, we're digging into food and sugar addiction: what it actually is, how it differs from an eating disorder, which foods are the real culprits, and what helps, from support groups to GLP-1s.

    Topics Discussed:

    • What Actually Makes Something an Addiction?
    • How to Tell If It's Food Addiction
    • Food Addiction vs. Eating Disorders (and Why It's So Common Now)

    • What to Do About Sugar and Food Addiction
    • Food Noise, Cravings, and Getting Support
    • GLP-1s: Helpful Tool, Not a Full Solution
    • There's a Happy Ending Here

Joining me is Dr. Vera Tarman, a Toronto-based physician specializing in addiction medicine, with a particular focus on food and sugar addiction. She's board certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and a fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Tarman is the medical director at Renascent, one of Canada's leading addiction treatment centers, and she also works with the Salvation Army's Concurrent Disorder Treatment Program, supporting patients who are managing both addiction and mental health challenges.

She's the author of Food Junkies: Recovery from Food Addiction and co-hosts the Food Junkies podcast, where she talks with leading researchers and clinicians about ultra-processed food, GLP-1 medications, sugar abstinence, and the neuroscience of cravings. She's also the founder of the free Facebook community Sugar-Free for Life Support Group: I'm Sweet Enough.

That's only a glimpse of what Dr. Tarman shares. The full conversation goes deeper into recognizing the signs, what a sugar-free reset actually involves, and how to build lasting support.

Is it too late to lose weight at 65?

And if it isn't, how much do you actually need to lose, and which treatments are safe for an older body? Now that Medicare patients can access GLP-1 medications through the Bridge program, these questions are a lot more practical than theoretical, and there's like, a ton of confusion out there about what's right for older adults.

To help sort it out, today's guest is Dr. Melanie Jay, a professor of medicine and population health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She's an internal medicine physician and board-certified obesity specialist who sees patients at the New York Harbor Veterans Health Administration in Manhattan, so she's caring for older adults in real life every week. She also directs the NYU Langone Comprehensive Program on Obesity Research, where her work focuses on improving obesity treatment and prevention in primary care settings and among vulnerable patient populations.

Dr. Jay has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, her commentary has appeared in outlets like the New York Times, CBS News, and the Today Show, and her TEDx talk on the future of obesity care was featured as an editor's pick. She's the perfect person to walk through what older adults should know about weight, medications, and surgery.

    Topics discussed:

    • Is it too late to lose weight at 65? Dr. Melanie Jay says no
    • Skipping meals in older age
    • GLP-1 medications in older adults: safe, effective, and no age cutoff
    • Heart protection in older adults: what the SELECT trial showed for Wegovy
    • GLP-1s in older adults: muscle, side effects, hydration, and staying the course
    • Paying for obesity treatment after 65: Medicare, the VA, and why wraparound care matters

Ready to hear how much weight older adults actually need to lose, what to watch for with side effects like dehydration and muscle loss, how Medicare and the VA cover treatment, and why a strong care team makes all the difference? Why "Too Expensive" Keeps Winning Against a Disease That's Costing Us Billions

That's the tension running through this whole episode. Dr. Doug Maready has spent nearly two decades wrestling with that question, not from behind a desk, but in the exam room with actual patients. He's an internal medicine and obesity medicine physician practicing in Mesa, Arizona, and the founder of Maready Medical, now part of Forte Wellbeing. His guiding philosophy is straightforward: obesity is a disease, it responds to treatment, and skipping treatment is often the pricier path in the long run. That stance has earned him a seat at the table on obesity policy in Arizona, where he serves as president of the Arizona Obesity Organization, stays active with the Obesity Medicine Association, and regularly weighs in through Arizona media on coverage and access issues.

    In this episode:

    • The $11 Billion Question: What Obesity Really Costs Us
    • The Real Math Behind GLP-1 Coverage
    • Medicare Access vs. Medicaid's State-by-State Challenge
    • Why Treating Obesity Shouldn't Need an ROI
    • Private Insurance, HRAs, and the Fight for GLP-1 Coverage
    • Tax Benefits for Obesity Treatment and Weight Loss
    • Making Obesity Coverage a Reality
    • Takeaways and the Case for Broader Access to Treatment

Together, we unpack what obesity actually drains from state budgets and the broader healthcare system, why securing GLP-1 coverage remains such an uphill climb across Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers, and why there's still such a disconnect between labeling obesity a disease and treating it like one. Dr. Maready brings a dual perspective, blending the policy landscape with what he's witnessing firsthand in patient care, which grounds the statistics in something more tangible.

You'll come away with actionable takeaways, whether you're building a case for your employer's HR team or advocating for change at a broader policy level. Catch the full conversation to get the complete picture on what's really driving the cost of obesity care and where things can go from here.

Ever wonder why meal replacement shakes have such a bad reputation, even though some of the most successful weight loss stories involve exactly that?

There’s a lingering idea that meal replacements are outdated or that GLP-1 medications have completely replaced them, but that’s not the full picture. In this episode, we sit down with Jennifer Barlow, a board-certified family nurse practitioner and founder of True North Medical in Rhode Island, a practice focused on evidence-based obesity medicine and midlife health.

With more than 25 years of healthcare experience, Jennifer brings a unique perspective to the conversation, combining clinical expertise with her personal experience of losing more than 100 pounds and keeping it off.

We dive into what medical-grade meal replacements are actually made of, why very low-calorie diets can work when properly supervised, how ketosis affects hunger, and how meal replacements can complement medications like GLP-1s. We also discuss exercise, medical supervision, who may not be a good candidate, and how patients can transition off a program.

    Topics discussed:

    • Meal replacement programs and weight loss
    • Very low-calorie diets and nutritional quality
    • Protein, fiber, hydration, and ketosis
    • Variety in meal replacement options
    • Meal replacements and GLP-1 medications
    • Exercise and muscle preservation

Do you actually know the difference between a rough night's sleep and a real sleep disorder?

Most people use the word "insomnia" for both, but the line between them is a lot more specific than it sounds — and knowing where that line sits can change how someone approaches their own sleep struggles entirely.

That's exactly what this episode digs into, with Dr. Muhammad Usama returning to the show after a prior conversation on Zepbound and sleep apnea. He's triple board-certified in sleep and obesity medicine, practices at MultiCare Health System in the greater Seattle area, and serves as an adjunct clinical professor of medicine at A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine. His clinical and research work centers on the intersection of obstructive sleep apnea, obesity, and cardiometabolic health, with a particular focus on GLP-1 therapies like tirzepatide.

This time, the conversation turns to insomnia itself: what actually qualifies as chronic insomnia, why it happens, and what treatment options genuinely move the needle versus which ones just create the illusion of help.

    Topics discussed:

    • When Does Insomnia Stop Being Normal?
    • The Switch That Turns Short-Term Insomnia Into Chronic Insomnia
    • Is Insomnia Genetic? The Nature vs. Nurture Answer
    • Chronic Insomnia: Why CBT-i, Not Sleep Hygiene, Is the First-Line Treatment
    • How to Actually Access CBT-i (No Therapist Couch Required)
    • Do Sleep Medications Actually Work? The Research Says Not Much
    • Acute Insomnia: How Early Intervention Prevents It From Becoming Chronic
    • Does Melatonin Actually Help With Sleep? What It's Really For
    • Do Sleep Supplements Like Magnesium Actually Work?
    • Alcohol and Marijuana for Sleep: Do They Actually Help—or Hurt?
    • Chronic Insomnia: When to Get Evaluated and What Actually Works

Insomnia is far more common, and far more treatable, than most people realize. Between understanding the difference between acute and chronic, recognizing the habits that quietly turn one into the other, and knowing which treatments actually hold up under research, this episode covers a lot of ground that can change how someone approaches their own sleep for good. If sleep has been a struggle for months, it's worth getting evaluated rather than just living with it — this episode is a great place to start.

Do you know what happens in your body when you eat a meal? Or did you, like most of us, make it to adulthood without anyone explaining the basics?

If that question made you pause, you're not alone. Most "healthy eating" advice arrives in fragments — a rule from one diet trend, a warning from another — without ever adding up to a full picture of how food actually works in the body.

Protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients: these aren't competing categories to master one at a time. They're a system. Once you understand how the pieces fit together, meal planning stops feeling like guesswork and starts feeling like common sense.

This episode covers exactly that — what each macronutrient is doing for you, why micronutrients matter even in small amounts, and how to build a plate that supports your body without obsessing over any single food or number. No fad diets, no miracle foods. Just the fundamentals, explained clearly.

    Topics discussed:

    • Macronutrients: The Building Blocks of Your Diet
    • Protein: Why Your Body Needs It
    • Carbohydrates: Choosing Better Sources of Energy
    • Fat: Why It's Essential for Good Health
    • Caloric Density: Why Some Foods Contain More Calories Than Others
    • Micronutrients: The Vitamins and Minerals Your Body Needs
    • Whole Foods: Why Variety Matters More Than Individual Nutrients
    • Building a Balanced Plate for Better Nutrition
    • Reducing Added Sugar Without Feeling Restricted
    • Eating More Protein to Stay Fuller Longer
    • Focus on Adding Healthy Foods Instead of Restricting Them
    • Creating Healthy Eating Habits That Last

Your plate is the one thing you control every single day — three times a day, for the rest of your life. Every meal is a chance to give your body what it actually needs instead of guessing, restricting, or chasing whatever the latest trend says to avoid. This episode hands you the framework to make that choice easier, meal after meal. Press play and find out how to make it work for you.

Have You Ever Wondered If Your Telehealth Weight Loss Clinic Is Actually Giving You Real Medical Care, or Just a Prescription?

This episode dives into a JAMA study that's been generating serious buzz throughout the obesity medicine community, and once you hear what it uncovered, you'll understand exactly why. Researchers conducted a "secret shopper" investigation, sending someone posing as a patient to 49 different telehealth clinics offering obesity management medications, simply to see what kind of care they'd actually receive. The findings shed light on where the gaps really are in this rapidly expanding area of healthcare, and they back up what a lot of obesity medicine providers have suspected for quite some time.

We're unpacking what comprehensive obesity care is truly supposed to look like, and how you can figure out whether the care you're getting, or the care you're offering, actually holds up. And there are two calls to action woven throughout: if you're someone taking these medications or considering starting them, we'll walk through how to find a provider who's doing this the right way. And if you're a clinician providing this kind of care already, consider this your reminder to put yourself out there more, because there are patients who genuinely need access to someone doing it well.

    Topics Discussed:

    • The JAMA Study Raising Questions About Obesity Telehealth
    • The Missing Piece in Many Telehealth Weight Loss Programs
    • Convenience Shouldn't Replace Comprehensive Medical Care
    • The Importance of Clinical Oversight in Telehealth Prescribing
    • What Comprehensive Obesity Care Should Look Like
    • Where to Start If You're Considering Weight-Loss Medication
    • How to Find High-Quality Obesity Care

This episode covers a lot of ground, from the specific numbers behind the study to what a truly thorough evaluation should include, and what red flags to watch for if you're navigating this kind of care yourself. Whether you're a patient trying to figure out if your provider is doing right by you, or a clinician who wants to understand where the industry is falling short, this conversation breaks it all down in a way that's genuinely worth your time. Press play to catch the full episode and get every detail we covered.

What if the biggest thing standing between you and your health goals wasn't food, or exercise, but the screen you're holding right now?

Today we're talking about screen time — how too much of it affects your health, your weight, and what you can actually do about it. I've got five problems screens create, and five solutions to go with them, so stick with me.

Screen time isn't something I bring up with patients as often as I probably should, but it shows up in two specific places in my practice. The first is during a comprehensive annual wellness visit, where I think about screens the same way I think about substances like alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana — something we tend to overuse, often to numb out or fill a void, and something we can usually cut back on to genuinely improve our health. The second is in weight maintenance. Once a patient reaches their goal weight and we shift into maintenance mode, I walk through a handout built around the National Weight Control Registry — a long-running study tracking people who lost 30 or more pounds and kept it off for at least a year. One of the most telling data points from that registry: 62% of people who successfully maintained their weight loss were watching less than 10 hours of TV a week. That's still over an hour a day, so there's plenty of room for your shows — but it tells us something real about the role screens play in long-term success. Today we're getting into exactly why.

    Topics discussed:

    • The Sneaky Way Screen Time Is Draining Your Daily Movement
    • Why Screen Time and Snacking Go Together More Than You Realize
    • The Hidden Link Between Blue Light, Sleep, and Weight
    • The Stress Connection Nobody Talks About With Screen Time
    • The Real Cost of Letting Screens Eat Your Free Time
    • One Easy Shift That Actually Cuts Down Screen Time
    • Try the 30/30 Rule to Break Up Long Periods of Sitting
    • Keep Screens Out of Mealtimes
    • Set a Screen Curfew Before Bed
    • Pair Screen Time With Movement

There's a lot packed into this one, and every piece builds on the last. We'll get into why your favorite show might be quietly killing your daily movement, how it sneaks into your snacking and sleep without you noticing, and how something as small as the 30/30 rule or a bedtime curfew can start turning that around. Press play and find out where your screen time might be costing you more than you think.

  18. Five New Shifts in How Exercise Affects Health

Ever feel like exercise gets treated as this magic weight-loss tool, when really that's not even its main superpower?

Here's the truth: most people don't lose significant weight from exercise alone. Your body is smart (annoyingly so) — it adapts, burns fewer calories than you'd expect, and can even nudge you to move less throughout the day or eat a little more to compensate. So if you've ever felt discouraged because the scale didn't move despite all your effort at the gym, you're not doing anything wrong. That's just physiology doing its thing.

But here's the part that matters even more: exercise isn't about the scale, and it never should be. It's genuinely one of the most powerful things you can do for your overall health, no matter your weight. It also plays a major role in maintaining weight loss once you've achieved it, arguably a bigger win than losing the weight itself. Exercise was never meant to be a punishment for how you look, it's a tool for feeling stronger, sleeping better, and building a body that can support you for the long run.

This week's episode dives into five new conversations we should all be having about exercise, from the real sweet spot for strength training to the surprising ways your muscles work behind the scenes:

    Topics discussed:

    • The Sweet Spot for Strength Training, According to Research
    • The Case for Mixing Up Your Workouts
    • Muscle Mass vs. Muscle Function: What Actually Matters on GLP-1s
    • The Minimum Effective Dose: How Little Exercise Actually Counts?

What If Your Weight Struggle Was Never About Willpower?

What if the reason some people struggle with their weight their entire lives has nothing to do with what they're eating or how hard they're trying — and everything to do with their DNA? It's a question that doesn't get asked nearly enough, and today, we're finally diving into it.

For so many people living with severe obesity, the missing piece of the puzzle isn't a better diet plan or more motivation. It might be written right into their genetic code — and that changes everything about how it should be understood and treated.

Today's guest is Dr. Jesse Richards — board-certified in internal medicine and obesity medicine, Director of Obesity Medicine at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, and the person his colleagues call when they have questions about the genetics of obesity. His research covers genetic obesity, GLP-1s, and novel treatments for obesity and substance use disorders. Safe to say, he knows this space better than almost anyone.

    In This Episode, We Cover:

    • What Sparked Dr. Jesse's Interest in Genetic Obesity
    • Why Some People Are Born With a Stronger Genetic Drive Toward Obesity
    • The Genetic Syndromes Behind Severe Obesity That Most People Have Never Heard Of
    • It's Not in Your Head — But It Is in Your Biology
    • Why Genetic Test Results Are Only Part of the Story

This is just the surface — give the full episode a listen to get into everything we covered and more.

What if Medicare finally made GLP-1 medications for weight management more affordable — could this be the moment that changes access for millions of people?

Today, we're talking about something that's been years in the making in the world of obesity care: the expanded coverage of anti-obesity medications for patients on Medicare. Starting July 1st, eligible Medicare beneficiaries have a real opportunity to access GLP-1 receptor agonist medications at a much more affordable monthly cost through a new federal program — and for many patients, this could mark a major shift in access to treatment that's historically been limited or completely out of reach under Medicare's coverage rules.

This change didn't happen overnight. It comes after years of advocacy, policy discussions, and ongoing efforts to get obesity recognized as a chronic medical condition that deserves treatment just like any other disease. In this episode, we break down where this program came from, how it connects to the bigger picture of obesity care, who it applies to, and everything you need to know about eligibility, covered medications, and how the process actually plays out in real life.

    Topics discussed:

    • How the Bridge Program Could Expand Access to Obesity Medications
    • For the First Time, Medicare Is Opening the Door to Obesity Medications
    • The BMI and Health Condition Criteria
    • Why the Reason for Your Prescription Matters Just as Much
    • The Details That Make a Real Difference — Prior BMI and Lifestyle Support
    • The List of Weight Loss Medications Covered by the Bridge Program

Want the full breakdown? This episode covers all the details on eligibility, covered medications, and what this program could mean for you or someone you love navigating Medicare and obesity treatment. Find it wherever you get your podcasts — and if it helps, share it with someone who might need to hear it too.
