The Green Lantern Corps Podcast

Phillip Kennedy Johnson, the writer behind Green Lantern: War Journal, joins the Green Lantern Corps Cast for a candid conversation about John Stewart and the Lanterns series. He talks about why he almost turned down John, the conversation with Geoffrey Thorne that changed his mind, and the Neal Adams panel that still shapes how he sees the character. He's open about his issues with the show's Hal Jordan, including the car scene and a death he thinks came too easily, and also points to what the series got right. We also get into whether War Journal counts as horror and how his John compares to Superman, including a story from his own time in the Army. Plus, he pitches a Constantine and Doctor Strange team-up that really needs to exist. Find us on YouTube at http://youtube.com/glspotlight

It's season finale time! Naaim and Brandan talk "Dirt and Stars," walking through the whole thing beat by beat: what landed, what didn't, and one very specific creative choice at the end of the episode that we may have had thoughts about.

Along the way we get into the season as a whole – the front half versus the back half, the ring-construct budget, whether this works as a John Stewart origin story or just as prestige TV with a lantern on the poster, argue about superhero ethics until we somehow end up relitigating the Mutant Registration Act, and look ahead to Man of Tomorrow and what James Gunn's DCU might mean for John going forward. There's also a brief, unresolved mystery about Paula Patton that we never quite put to bed.

Naaim and Brandan break down the penultimate episode of Lanterns "The Jordan Boys Legacy." One episode left. Hal's a hologram, John's a mess, Sinestro's on the loose, Noah's giving off Manhunter vibes, and we have theories about all of it. Plus, some theories for a potential Season 2 and does this show work without Kyle Chandler?

Naaim and Brandan dig into "Bad Optics" from the John/Hal café confrontation and Hal's broken nose, to Guy Gardner finally showing up five and a half episodes into an eight-episode season. With two episodes still to go in HBO's Lanterns, they recap where the season stands, react to the episode's biggest turns, and get into the bigger question hanging over the final stretch: can the show still deliver on the Hal-and-John partnership it promised, or did that arc quietly slip away a few episodes back?

Naaim and Brandan break down episode 5 of HBO's Lanterns, the one where Hal finally gets to do some real Green Lantern stuff and John's arc takes a big step forward.

We dig into Hal's performance on the job (and mount a full defense), what the episode says about creativity and what it really means to be a Green Lantern, and John's push-and-pull with the mantle. Then a beat-by-beat on one of the season's tensest scenes.

In this episode of Green Lantern Corps Cast, Naaim and Brandan dig into Lanterns Episode 4, "The Weenie," which they think might be the strongest of the season so far. They break down Ulrich Thomsen's Hannibal-Lecter-grade Sinestro and the wedge he's driving between Hal and John, get into why the Hal/John relationship is the real engine of the show, and build out a full Manhunter suspect board. They close with some bigger-picture talk on where Lanterns fits in the current prestige-TV landscape, John Stewart's evolving comics canon, and whether this show is finally the cultural moment GL fans have been waiting for.

In this episode of Green Lantern Corps Cast, Naaim and Brandan dig into Lanterns Episode 3, "OutKast", exploring the backstory and childhood of John Stewart. They unpack Jasmine Cephas Jones's scene-stealing turn as Bernadette Stewart, dig into the multi-decade flashbacks that shape John into the man who'll carry the ring, and talk about the racial undertones and overtones that drive his story. They close with a rundown of the best Green Lantern comics to pick up if the show has you hooked, from Rebirth and Secret Origin to Venditti's run and Morrison's JLA, plus some real talk on whether DC is doing enough to ride the Lanterns momentum.

Naaim and Brandan break down HBO's Lanterns Episode 2: John Stewart's mysterious bird construct, Hal's suspicious closet full of hanging Green Lantern suits, the eerily empty Rushville hospital, and the aliens tasking John with hunting a hidden Manhunter in 48 hours, all leading to that Sinestro cliffhanger.

They dig into the Hal/Sinestro "Hannibal Lecter" dynamic and debate why Hal won't go to the Guardians. Plus: the new People vs. Gorilla Grodd cast and Lanterns' record-breaking 9.3M premiere.

And does this finally feel like the Green Lantern adaptation we've been waiting for? We'll dig into the episode's characters, performances, world-building, and biggest moments. Plus, we'll revisit some of the predictions we made before the premiere and see how badly we managed to get things wrong.

Before Lanterns premieres, we're taking a look at what DC's newest series has in store. We'll talk about Hal Jordan, John Stewart, the murder mystery at the heart of the show, and the show's creative team (Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King) and look at what their previous work might tell us about the kind of Lanterns we're about to get. We'll also revisit 2011's Green Lantern movie and ask whether this new series can finally get the character right.

Then we'll share our hopes, concerns, and predictions for the first season, from the mystery at its center to the larger DC Universe connections. And before Episode 1 gives us any answers, we'll put our wildest theories on the record so we can see just how wrong we were later. Definitely check it out!
