  1. Ep. 61 When You Feel Like You're Failing Your PDA, Autistic Child: Changing the Standard You Measure Yourself By

    Season 1, Episode 61

    Show notes

No matter how much you do for your PDA, autistic child, does it never feel like enough? You might be measuring yourself by a standard never made for you.

If you're parenting a PDA, autistic or high-needs child, you're likely co-regulating, accommodating, researching late at night and adjusting your whole life. And still, when your child isn't getting better the way you think they should, the thought comes in: "What if I'm not doing enough? I'm failing my child."

In this episode, I share the years I tried to be superhuman for my son, the night in the garage when I finally caught the pattern, and what helped me step off a standard that was never meant for a family like ours.

    In this episode:

    •

The pattern so many parents of PDA, autistic kids get stuck in

    •

Why you're carrying an extraordinary load while expecting yourself to function as if you're not

    •

Why "What am I doing wrong?" is often the fight response turned inward

    •

Grieving the life you thought you'd have

    •

The island: changing the standard, not trying harder to meet it

    •

"Am I giving up on my child?"

    •

Two practices to help you feel like you're doing enough

  2. Ep. 60 How Do I Know If I'm Accommodating My PDA, Autistic Child the Right Way?

    Season 1, Episode 60

    Show notes

Am I accommodating my PDA, autistic child, or am I giving in? If you swing between the two and can't tell which is right, this episode is for you.

Part 4 of a four-part series on when your PDA, autistic child can't separate from you, and this is the last one.

Most of us are not giving too much. What may be happening is that we're giving from survival, or that survival is keeping us from giving enough. And from inside survival, you can't hear your own read of your own child.

    In this episode:

    1. The fight my husband and I kept having, and the years I spent looking for an expert to settle it

    2. The night I typed "pathological demand avoidance" into Google, and what my body did before my mind caught up

    3. The two survival patterns underneath the swing — we give in because we can't be with their distress, and we push because of what we were taught

    4. The three nervous system patterns that make your own signal impossible to hear: stuck on ON, pretend calm, and dorsal shutdown

    5. Story follows state, and why "just trust your gut" is not useful advice for a parent in our situation

    6. What your child is reading in you while you're making the decision

    7. How to get to know your survival signature and your own instinct signature, and tell them apart

    8. What to do with everything you're told, so other people's frameworks become yours

  3. Ep. 59 Will They Ever Learn to Be Okay Without Me? How to Help Your PDA, Autistic Child Separate From You

    Season 1, Episode 59

    Show notes

Your PDA, autistic child can't let you out of the room, not even to go to the bathroom. Here's what's actually happening inside them.

If you're in the thick of this, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

For a long stretch of my son's burnout I sat beside him in our family room for hours a day, barely moving, holding my pee, because every time my attention left him his anxiety rose. We still have holes in our doors from that time.

And underneath it all was the question I know you're carrying too. Am I giving too much? And will they ever learn?

In Part 3 of this four-part series I go through:

    • The seven reasons your PDA, autistic child genuinely needs this much from you — a lower threat threshold, monotropism, and autonomy as a survival need, not a preference.

    • What the research actually says about responsiveness, so you can put down the word coddling.

    • The three things that can keep your child stuck even when you accommodate well: anxiety, OCD, and the predictive brain.

    • How to tell whether this is your child, with three questions to ask yourself.

    • How to hold accommodation and gentle challenge together, in five steps.

    • Exactly what I did with my son, starting with the bathroom and then leaving the house, with the real timeline and how long it took.

  4. Ep. 58 The 7 Moves That Make Co-Regulating Your PDA, Autistic Child Who Can't Leave Your Side So Much Easier

    Season 1, Episode 58

    Show notes

You give and give all day, and then you snap, and then you feel horrible about yourself. Here are the 7 moves that break that cycle.

If that cycle is your day, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

If you're co-regulating a PDA, autistic or highly sensitive child who can't be away from you, you know how the day goes. The demands. The questions. The needing you to stay right there and not move. You're okay with it for a while, and then something in you runs out.

In this episode I tell you about the night I sat on the bathroom floor crying after getting angry at my son again, and what I finally understood about why that cycle kept repeating.

Then I walk you through seven moves, one for each of the seven things that get triggered in your nervous system inside this kind of parenting:

    1. When the urge to get away comes — let it move

    2. When the NO is stuck — let that move too

    3. When guilt and self-criticism arrive — meet them with compassion

    4. When the fear about their future grips — let them be distressed briefly, and repair

    5. When the grief is there — make room for it

    6. When you feel trapped — give yourself choice

    7. Take in nourishment, however small

We also go into what we're aiming for: building capacity, so you co-regulate from presence instead of survival. And the belief underneath all of my giving, that I should give up all of my needs, and where it came from.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series.

  5. Ep. 57 When Your PDA, Autistic Child Can't Separate and You Just Want a Break

    Season 1, Episode 54

    Show notes

Your child can't let you out of their sight — and you're exhausted. Here are the 7 things happening in your nervous system that nobody tells you about.

If this episode landed for you, start with my free 7 Truths guide — for the parent who has read the books and done the inner work and still reacts: https://www.illuminateu.ca/7-truths-free-guide-podcast

If you have a PDA, autistic or highly sensitive child who can't separate from you, you know this already. They follow you room to room. They hear the toilet flush and call you back. You can't cook dinner without them needing you every few minutes, even when the dinner is for them.

And when you do take a little space, you pay for it afterwards. So eventually you stop taking it at all.

In this episode I share the morning I drove away from my house while my son screamed and banged on the car — and why it felt, inside me, like I was dying too.

Then I walk you through the seven things that happen in your nervous system inside this kind of parenting:

    1. Blocked flight energy — the urge to get away with nowhere to go

    2. Blocked fight energy — the NO you can't say

    3. Guilt and self-criticism for having those urges at all

    4. The fear and pressure about your child's future

    5. Grief, including the grief of feeling completely unsupported

    6. The trapped feeling all of it piles into

    7. Your child slowly becoming a cue of danger to your system

We also go into the meanings underneath each one, where those beliefs actually came from, and the one pattern that makes co-regulation the most exhausting of all — I'm not okay unless you're okay.

This is part one of a three-part series. Next week: the seven moves that make co-regulating a child who can't leave your side so much easier on you.

  6. Ep. 56 Shouldn't I Be Teaching My Child That Hitting Is Wrong? (Part 3)

    Season 1, Episode 56

    Show notes

It's the fear so many parents of PDA and autistic kids carry: that today's aggression means something frightening about their child's future. In Part 3 of this series I gently take that fear apart, and offer a completely different way to understand how our kids actually learn.

If this is where you are right now, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

You'll hear why “just stopping” the behaviour doesn't teach, the difference between stopping a behaviour and building the capacity underneath it, how the meaning we attach to our child's behaviour drives our own reactions, and why the most protective thing you can do for your child's future isn't to frighten the behaviour out of them now.

Part 1 is the foundation (what's happening inside YOU). Part 2 is what to do in the storm. And Part 3 — this one — is how they truly learn, and how to set the future-fear down and hold real hope.

  7. Ep. 55 What to Do When Your PDA or Autistic Child Is Hitting You (Part 2)

    Season 1, Episode 55

    Show notes

You don't want to be hit — and yet every option feels wrong. You walk away, they follow. You close the door, they punch it. You stand there, and you're the one getting hurt. There's no good choice, and underneath it all is that trapped, powerless feeling that this will never end.

If you are in this right now, start with my free 3 Shifts guide — the three patterns most parents get pulled into during a meltdown, and how to shift them: https://www.illuminateu.ca/3-shifts-free-guide-podcast

In Part 2 of this three-part series on aggression, Afshan shares what actually changed it in her own home — where storms went from five hours of daily rage to about thirty minutes, maybe once a week. It was never the perfect strategy (there isn't one). It was learning to move out of the “trauma vortex” and into a safe-enough state, right in the middle of the storm — and the specific shifts that make that possible, both inside you and with your child.

You'll hear why staying “calm” can backfire, the difference between stopping a behaviour and punishing it, what to do when the hitting is aimed at you (or someone else), and how the storms actually get shorter over time.

This is the practical one. Part 1 is the foundation — what's happening inside YOU. Part 3, coming next week, is about the fear of the future: what this behaviour means for your child down the road, and why the way they truly learn isn't what we were taught.

    Season 1, Episode 54

    Show notes

You’ve been told to “just stay calm” while your child rages, hits, or destroys things — and then quietly beaten yourself up when you couldn’t. Here’s the truth: you are not supposed to feel calm in those moments. It isn’t possible — and chasing calm might actually be making them harder.

In Part 1 of this two-part series on aggression, parenting coach Afshan (mom to a once-five-hours-a-day melting-down kid) walks you through what’s really happening inside YOU first: the survival patterns we fall into without realizing, the nervous-system science that finally takes the shame off, and the shift that changes everything — from “what do I do?” to “how do I be?” Because your own regulated-enough nervous system is the real intervention.

This is the foundation. Part 2 gets into what to actually do when the aggression is aimed right at you — including the hitting.

  9. Ep. 53 The Movements That Rewired Her Sons' Brains — and Kept Her Alive

    Season 1, Episode 53

    Show notes

It was 1 a.m., and Alma Galván was in tears. Both of her sons had severe autism, ADHD and sensory differences. Doctors told her to institutionalize her oldest son, and daily two-hour meltdowns had become normal. She remembers thinking, *"This isn't life."*

If this is landing for you, start with my free 7 Truths guide — what is actually running the show underneath when you react: https://www.illuminateu.ca/7-truths-free-guide-podcast

With no internet or roadmap, Alma spent seven years searching for answers. What she discovered changed everything: gentle developmental movements that helped build the brain's lower centers, reducing chronic survival responses. Her sons, who were both non-speaking until after age six, are now adults in their 30s who are working and thriving.

But the biggest surprise wasn't just what happened to her children—it was what happened to her. As she practiced the movements alongside them, her own nervous system began to settle for the first time in years.

That experience led Alma to create **Alma Integration**, a program designed not just for children, but for parents.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why movement reaches the brain when reasoning and rewards can't

    • The role of the pons in survival, sensory overwhelm and meltdowns

    • Why a regulated parent is part of the intervention—not just the support

    • Why play and connection are essential for lasting change

    • How to tell whether your child is leaning in or pulling away

    • Alma's remarkable healing journey after 21 days in the ICU

    • Why healing happens in spirals, not straight lines

    • Two simple practices you can begin today—for you and your child

If you're parenting a PDA, autistic, ADHD or highly sensitive child and feel like you've tried everything, this conversation offers hope for both your child—and for you.

I share the real story of what this looked like in our house during my son's burnout, the two kinds of talking I used to reach for that both backfired every time, what I came to understand about why verbal processing is so hard for kids like ours in an activated state, and exactly how to practice WAIT yourself — including what to do with your own fight-or-flight energy instead of directing it at your child.

This one is close to my heart, and it's the answer I give every time a professional or doctor asks what helped my son the most.🎧 Prefer to read? 11. Ep. 51 Am I Damaging My Child? The 3 Shame Spirals That Keep Parents of PDA, Autistic, ADHD Kids Stuck

    Season 1, Episode 51

    Show notes

"I lost it on my child. I'm damaging them." "My child is still struggling. I must not be doing enough." "We don't fit in anywhere. Something must be fundamentally wrong with us."

If you are asking whether you are damaging your child, start with my free 7 Truths guide — what is actually running the show underneath when you react: https://www.illuminateu.ca/7-truths-free-guide-podcast

If you've felt any of those things — you're not broken. You're stuck in a shame spiral. And in this episode, I'm going to show you exactly what's driving these loops, what's underneath them, and how to start breaking free.

I share a real day from our hardest years — the morning I ran at my son like an animal, the afternoon I watched him fail to connect online, the evening I found out we hadn't been invited to a family event we were always included in. All three shame loops. One regular day.

    Then I walk you through:

→ Why shame is not a personal flaw — it's ancient survival biology wired into all of us

→ What actually happens in your nervous system when shame gets triggered (including the inner critic, dorsal vagal shutdown, and the emotions trapped underneath)

→ The childhood wound that was already there before your child arrived — and why this parenting keeps pulling that thread

→ What's really underneath each shame loop: the terror, grief, helplessness and longing that shame is protecting you from feeling

→ Why breaking free from shame is one of the most powerful things you can do for your child's nervous system — not just your own

→ Two practices: working with your inner critic, and Dr. Kristin Neff's 3-step self-compassion framework applied directly to shame

This is deep work. And it's also the most important work you can do — not just for yourself, but for your child, and for the generations that come after.

  12. Ep. 50 Reclaiming Your Joy and Aliveness — Even When Your Autistic Child Is Still Struggling

    Season 1, Episode 47

    Show notes

Have you lost your sense of aliveness? Your ease? Your feeling of well-being — that quiet sense of being at home inside yourself? If you're parenting a PDA, autistic, or high-needs child and somewhere along the way you stopped feeling like yourself, this episode is for you.

If you have lost yourself inside this, start with my free Meaning guide — for the grief nobody names, and finding your way back to yourself: https://www.illuminateu.ca/meaning-guide-podcast

I'm sharing the moment I watched my son laugh — during one of his first good days in years — and felt absolutely nothing. Not relief. Not joy. Not ease. Just flatness. And what that moment taught me about what chronic stress actually does to a parent's nervous system.

Because here's what I've come to understand: we don't lose our joy, our aliveness, or our well-being. We lose access to them. And that is a completely different problem — with a completely different solution.

    In this episode:

    — Why joy, ease, aliveness, and well-being disappear under chronic stress (and why it's not a character flaw)

    — The difference between losing yourself and losing access to yourself

    — What I call the Inner Resource

    — the unshakable ground of well-being that was never actually gone

    — How I found my way back through sensation in my own body

    — the tingling, the pulsing, the quiet aliveness that was there all along

    — Why you don't have to wait for your child to be okay before you start feeling okay

    — A simple practice to begin reconnecting with yourself today.

This episode won't tell you to think positively or practice gratitude. It will help you understand, at a nervous system level, why the good things stopped landing — and give you a real, embodied way back to yourself.

In this episode, I explore why so many parents of high-needs children get trapped in the productivity cycle, how productivity becomes tied to self-worth, why parenting often breaks that strategy, and what helped me begin finding enoughness beyond accomplishment.

You'll learn:• Why the to-do list can become a nervous system survival strategy• How parenting a high-needs child challenges productivity-based definitions of success• Why helping your child feel safe often doesn't "count" in our minds• How productivity can shape the way we see ourselves and our children• The shifts that helped me move from doing to being📖 Read the full blog article here.🎁 Get my free resource.7 Steps to Regulated & Resilient Parenting With Your PDA, Autistic, ADHD, or High-Needs ChildIf this episode resonates with you, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with another parent who may need to hear it today.

    Season 1, Episode 48

If you react even when you know better, start with my free 7 Truths guide — why that happens, and what actually changes it: https://www.illuminateu.ca/7-truths-free-guide-podcast

In this episode, I explore the nervous system realities underneath control, rigidity, predictability, pressure, and fear in parenting.

    We’ll talk about:

    • why flexibility can feel emotionally and neurologically unsafe for many parents

    • how survival patterns can create rigidity and over-control

    • the difference between rule-based safety and nervous system safety

    • why uncertainty can trigger fear and catastrophic thinking

    • how conditioning around performance, structure, and success shapes parenting reactions

    • cognitive rigidity as a nervous system survival adaptation

    • and how parenting these children can become an invitation into deeper nervous system healing and flexibility.

This episode is especially for parents of PDA, autistic, ADHD, and hypersensitive children who find themselves caught between wanting to be responsive to their child’s needs… while also feeling overwhelmed by fear, uncertainty, and the loss of control.

In this episode, we explore the real reason behind that experience.

It’s not just about what’s happening in the present.

It’s about the 8 core childhood wounds that get activated again and again in this kind of parenting—and the meanings your brain learned to make about you long ago.

When those wounds are triggered, your reactions aren’t just about your child.

No matter how much you want to feel it… you just can’t access it.

For others, hope is there—but it doesn’t feel safe to touch.

Because every time you let yourself feel it… it feels like it gets taken away.

    You see progress—then regression.

    You feel relief—then disappointment.

You open to possibility—then get pulled back into fear.

Over time, many parents find themselves in an internal bind:Wanting to feel hope…While also protecting themselves from it.

In this episode, we explore:• why hope can feel out of reach—or unsafe to feel• how nervous system states and the brain’s negativity bias shape your ability to feel hope• why non-linear growth makes hope feel risky• and how hope can begin to return—not through forcing positivity, but through safety, agency, and shifting meaningThis is a deeply validating and empowering conversation for any parent who feels like hope has disappeared—or feels too painful to hold onto.👉 Read the full blog here👉 For deeper support, download my free guide + video series: 7 Steps to Regulated & Resilient Parenting with Your Hypersensitive, High-Needs, Autistic, PDA, ADHD, OCD Child
