TRUSTED by your Teenager with Kristen Duke
The goal isn't just to get through the teen years. It's to build a relationship that lasts beyond them.
Trusted by Your Teenager is for moms who want to build the kind of trust that keeps their teenager talking, even when the conversations get hard.
I'm Kristen Duke, and I share practical tools to help you respond instead of react, understand what may be underneath your teen's behavior, navigate hard conversations with more confidence, and strengthen your connection now so it can continue into adulthood.
Because becoming the mom your teenager trusts isn't something you have to leave to chance. These are skills you can learn, practice, and sharpen.

You Don't Need Another Parenting Tip. You Need THIS.
Show notes
What if the reason you're still struggling with your teenager isn't because you don't know what to say?
What if it's because knowing what to say and actually responding differently are two completely different things?
In today's episode of Trusted by Your Teenager, I'm sharing some of the conversations from my recent Trusted Table, where moms brought their real-life parenting challenges and we worked through them together.
We talked about teenagers who lie, shut down, get defensive, argue about phones, and seem impossible to communicate with.
And yes, I gave these moms practical ideas for what to say and do differently.
But here's what I REALLY want you to understand:
I can give you an answer for what to do today. But I want to help you become a mom who knows how to respond differently tomorrow.
We're talking about why our familiar parenting reactions are so hard to change, how to approach your teenager like a puzzle instead of a problem, and why becoming a trusted mom is a skill you build through practice.
Because your teenager doesn't need you to have the perfect response every time.
They need opportunities to experience you responding differently over time.
Ready to start changing those patterns?
Join me at my next Trusted Lab workshop on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, for just $27.
We'll uncover the blind spots that may be creating distance between you and your teenager and help you begin building the confidence to respond differently.

Where Do You Start When You Want a Better Relationship With Your Teen?
Show notes
Where do you start when you want a better relationship with your teenager?
Maybe things are actually pretty good—you just wish you knew what to say when conversations about phones, friends, dating, confidence, honesty, school or responsibility come up. Or maybe you're feeling your teenager pull away and wondering why everything you've tried seems to make them retreat even more.
In this episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes of the different ways I help moms—from the Teen Topic Toolkit and Chat Cards to the Trusted Lab, 30-Day Trusted Reset and Trusted Academy—and helping you recognize what kind of support might fit where you are right now.
It all started with a slideshow I made for my own kids explaining what I actually do. And that leads to one of my favorite simple connection ideas you can steal for Thanksgiving or Christmas this year: have a family slideshow night!
Because sometimes you need better words. Sometimes you need to see the pattern. Sometimes you need help changing the pattern. And sometimes you want support becoming a different kind of mom over time.

Your Teen Actually Talks to you. Now What Do You Say?
Show notes
You finally got your teenager talking. Now what do you SAY?
• How do you listen without immediately fixing?
• Hold a boundary without shutting them down?
• Give your opinion without making them regret telling you?
• Talk about phones without another power struggle?
• Respond to a lie in a way that encourages MORE honesty next time?Getting your teenager to talk isn't the whole goal. You want them to KEEP talking.
In this episode, I'm sharing why some of the best teenage conversations happen BEFORE there's a problem and how thinking through the tough topics ahead of time can help you respond with more confidence when the real moment comes.
And my brand-new Teen Topic Toolkit is officially OPEN!
You'll get bite-sized trainings and conversation tools for the 7 topics moms ask me about most: Phones, Friends, Dating, Confidence, Lying, Schoolwork, and Responsibility.

Your Teen Doesn't Need You to Fix It
Show notes
When your teenager is hurting, Fix-It Mom can show up FAST.
They're left out by friends. Their confidence takes a hit. Someone says something cruel. And because you love them, you immediately want to reassure, advise, solve, or make the hurt disappear.
But sometimes your teenager doesn't need you to fix it. They need to know you can handle sitting with them while it hurts.
In this episode, I'm talking about how to stay curious instead of jumping straight to solutions, what to say when your teenager shares something painful, and why some of the most important conversations happen BEFORE there's a problem.
Because the best time to decide how you want to handle a hard conversation isn't when you're already standing in the middle of it.
My brand-new Teen Topic Toolkit opens Thursday, October 15, with practical help for Phones, Friends, Dating, Confidence, Lying, Schoolwork, and Responsibility.

You Care SO Much. So Why Doesn't Your Teen Feel It?
Show notes
You care about your teenager so much.
So when they say, "You don't care about me," your first thought might be: Are you kidding me? Everything I do is because I care!
But sometimes there's a disconnect between how much you care and how your care is being experienced by your teenager.
The questions. The reminders. The advice. The checking in. The trying to fix it.
It all comes from love, but to your teenager, it can sometimes feel like pressure.
In this short episode, I'm sharing one simple shift you can make when you know something is wrong but your teenager doesn't want to talk.
And if you're missing the relationship you used to have, getting one-word answers, watching your teen disappear into their room, or wondering why your attempts to connect seem to push them farther away, don't just wait and hope it gets better.

Your Teen Won't Talk to You? You Might Be Solving the Wrong Problem
Show notes
What's something you really want to be able to talk to your teenager about?
Phones? Dating? Friends? Lying? School?
I hear some version of this question from moms all the time:
"How do I talk to my teenager about this?"
But there's a question that comes BEFORE that one:
Does your teenager want to talk to you in the first place?
In this episode, I'm breaking down the difference between knowing WHAT you want to talk about and having the skills to create the kind of conversation where your teenager actually keeps talking.
Because this isn't necessarily an effort problem.
It may be a skill problem.
And that's good news, because skills can be learned, practiced, and sharpened.
We'll talk about why awareness alone isn't enough, how your past conversations don't have to predict your future conversations, and the roadmap I use inside my Trusted Method to help moms move toward more confidence, better conversations, and stronger connection with their teenagers.
And I'll help you figure out which next step fits where you are right now:
If your teenager already talks to you but you want to feel more confident talking about the HARD stuff, my Teen Topic Toolkit is coming soon.

What If You're Trying TOO Hard to Help Your Teenager?
Show notes
You love your teenager. So when they come to you with a problem, of course you want to help.
But what if all that helping is actually making it harder for your teenager to talk to you, and harder for them to build confidence in themselves?
In this episode, I'm challenging the belief that being a good mom means giving your teenager the answers they need.
Because your teenager doesn't just need good answers from you.
They need opportunities to discover that they can find answers themselves.
We'll talk about why immediately reassuring your teenager isn't always confidence-building, what can happen when you unintentionally start thinking FOR them, and how your loving attempts to help can change their experience of talking to you.
And I'll give you one question to start asking yourself:
Am I helping my teenager think, or am I doing the thinking for them?
Because you don't want your teenager dependent on you for every answer. But you don't want disconnection either.
You want to become someone your teenager feels safe thinking out loud WITH.
Maybe the thing that needs to change isn't your teenager's willingness to talk.
Maybe it's the pattern that happens when they do.
If you want help seeing the patterns happening between you and your teenager that may be creating distance—even when you're trying to create closeness, join me for the Trusted Lab workshop on September 9th.

The Relationship You're Building with your Teen Before They Leave Home
Show notes
One day, your teenager gets to decide how much of their life you're part of.
That can feel terrifying, especially when they're already pulling away, talking less, or becoming more independent.
But staying close to your teenager isn't about holding on tighter. In this episode, I'm sharing what raising four teenagers has taught me about letting go without losing the relationship, why independence doesn't mean they need you less, and what we can do now to build the kind of relationship they'll want to carry into adulthood.
We'll talk about the difference between being involved and being available, why trying harder to stay close can sometimes create more distance, and how to keep the bridge between you strong as your role begins to change.
Because the goal isn't to raise a teenager who has to include you.
It's to build a relationship they keep choosing when they no longer have to.

Is Guilt Quietly Parenting Your Teenager?
Show notes
Most moms don't realize how many of their parenting decisions are driven by guilt.
"I yelled yesterday, so I should let this go."
"I've been working too much, so I need to make it up to them."
"They're upset... maybe I should back off."
It feels loving. It feels responsible.
But what if guilt is actually keeping you stuck?
In today's episode, we're unpacking why guilt isn't a parenting strategy, and why the healthiest moms aren't the ones who never feel guilty, but the ones who know what to do after guilt shows up.
You'll learn why guilt is like a dashboard warning light, what it's really trying to tell you, and how to stop letting it sit in the driver's seat of your parenting.
In this episode:
•
Why guilt is information, not transformation
•
The surprising cost of guilt-driven parenting
•
How guilt steals confidence, consistency, and peace
•
The difference between guilt and genuine growth
•
A simple mindset shift that can change the way you parent

Why Trying Harder Isn't Working (And What To Do Instead)
Show notes
You've read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Prayed. Researched. Promised yourself you'd stay calmer next time. And yet somehow, you and your teenager keep ending up back in the same fight.
In this episode, I'm sharing why more effort isn't the answer, and what actually is. Using a story from a mom I recently worked with and an analogy that's stuck with me for years, we're breaking down the one belief that keeps so many moms stuck in the same cycle with their teens.
If you're tired of trying harder and wondering why it still feels so hard, this episode is for you.
In this episode:
• Why effort alone doesn't fix conflict with your teenager
• The one shift that changed everything for a mom who'd been struggling for over a year
• A simple analogy that will change how you think about "trying harder"Ready to find your own blind spot? I'm offering a free 20-minute Conversation Audit, where we'll uncover one pattern that's making conversations with your teenager harder than they need to be, and I'll give you one shift you can start making immediately. I'm only taking 3 of these calls right now, once they're filled, they're gone for a while.

What If Your Worry Is Unintentionally Shaping Your Teen's Confidence?
Show notes
Have you ever found yourself thinking:
"My teenager's confidence is so low."
"I've told her a hundred times how amazing she is, but she just doesn't believe me."
"I wish he could see what I see in him."
If so, this episode might completely change the way you see your role in your teenager's confidence journey.
In this episode, I'm sharing one of the biggest parenting blind spots I see in loving, intentional moms:
The hidden connection between a mom's fear, worry, and anxiety... and her teenager's confidence.
Because sometimes the very things you're doing to help your teen feel more capable are accidentally communicating the opposite.
We'll talk about:
•
Why confidence isn't built through more encouragement alone
•
The bike story that changed how I think about parenting
•
What toddlers and teenagers surprisingly have in common
•
The difference between leadership and fear
•
Why your teenager may be borrowing more than your words
Most moms think they need support when they're yelling or when things are really bad at home.
But what if support isn't for the yelling mom?
What if it's for the loving mom...
The thoughtful mom...
The mom lying awake at night wondering if she's doing enough.
The mom carrying responsibilities she was never meant to carry.
If that's you, I want you to know: there is another way.
The next 30-Day Trusted Reset begins next week, and it was specifically designed to help moms move from fear to steadiness, from reacting to responding, and from carrying everything to leading with confidence.
Because awareness is powerful.
But awareness alone doesn't break patterns. Practice does.
If you're ready to stop trying harder and start practicing differently, I'd love to support you.
