  1. Swearing in front of kids, doomsday planning & is it OFFICIALLY the holiday season?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday and apparently.. Merry Christmas?? Santa is already set up at the mall, our neighbors swapped their Halloween decor for Thanksgiving OVERNIGHT, and the group chats have moved on to gift lists. So we need a ruling: is it OFFICIALLY the holiday season??? (we realized there are ONLY 24 days til Thanksgiving, so we did some live planning on the pod)

But first, the Halloweekend recap: the float plan fell apart like an hour before go-time, so we built the rodeo in the front yard dirt instead (crisis averted), Tate was a dinosaur at gymnastics (she only got in the costume after mama “tried it on” first hahaha), and she’s convinced Halloween is HER holiday (“happy Halloween to Tate!!”). Plus a trick or treating culture check: our block had 25 kids this year.. Jules’ parents’ neighborhood had 697?! So we get into how you actually make your street a trick or treating destination (it takes coordination!!)

It was also New York City Marathon weekend, which turns into how we view marathons (is it a SPORT or a HOBBY?!), why an Ironman deserves a forehead tattoo, and the Elizabeth Holmes mile-marker signs on the course hahaha. Speaking of: [SPOILERS] the “You Can See Everything” conversation continues, because Jules saw it and has a THEORY. Is Nathan Fielder a mastermind playing chess with all of us, or did he fall in love with Elizabeth Holmes? We are a house divided, vote in the comments. (And Pam from Phoenix + Paige from Indiana: you won the movie giveback, DM us!!)

Then on the table for today: is it OK to swear in front of kids? (our take: depends on the age, and we’re not there.. yet). Should you give up your seat for a 7 year old on public transit? Be honest. Then we close with the story of hackers taking over supermarket freezers across Europe, which raises a real question: do you have a family doomsday plan? Or are you like Jules?? (“I’m not trying to survive it”)

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  2. Our ‘You Can See Everything’ review, urgent care & a reminder to thank your garbage men!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday and happy almost HALLOWEEN!! This one is a little different.. we finally had a movie date night and saw the Elizabeth Holmes documentary, and it is genuinely all we can think about. So yes, this is basically our first ever movie review episode (don’t worry, we built it spoiler-safe: the timestamps above tell you exactly where the spoilers start and where to skip to!!)

But first, life: Alex is urgent care bound after a 3am foot situation (she’s fine!!! but like this MUST get handled), and it was trash day.. which means breakfast tacos, OJ and colored-on paper bags for our guys. Consider this your friendly reminder to thank your garbage men!!

Plus Sylvester Stallone’s unapologetic nepotism take (“I’m a parent and I want the best for my daughter”.. we kind of respect it?) and the new Rocky trailer that had us crying.

Then THE REVIEW. Spoiler-free verdict: everyone needs to go see “You Can See Everything.” The theater was packed, nobody touched their phone for three hours, and when it ended people STAYED IN THEIR SEATS talking to strangers about it. We haven’t experienced anything like it. Then we go full spoilers: the complete overview, and our takes on the question the whole movie hangs on.. sociopath, victim or misunderstood? (All opinions, allegedly on everything, but we have FEELINGS.) Plus one take so unhinged we need to know if anyone else thought it even for a second.

And because we want everyone to see it: comment your town and your go-to movie snack, and we’re buying a listener’s tickets AND snacks!!* Which obviously gets us into the perfect movie snack debate (one of us had four Diet Cokes at 6:45pm, Jules is smuggling in food-court teriyaki).

We close with a few things on the table: Jay-Z selecting HIMSELF for the halftime show (who else could pull that off?), the Hillsong pastor’s book tour, and a HYROX poop-gate follow up.

Happy Halloween, hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

*Giveback terms: One winner selected at random from comments on this episode on YouTube or Spotify left by Nov 2, 2026. Open to U.S. residents 18+. No purchase necessary. 3. Couples costumes, weeknight plans & our #1 hack for an easy kids’ birthday party

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday and happy HALLOWEEN WEEK!! We open with Tuesday vs. Chewsday part 982734 (Harrison is not compromising, but we’re still trying).

Harrison did the unthinkable last night: weeknight plans past 7pm. Chappelle was in town on a Tuesday (home at 1am, he’s recovering), which brings up two questions: 1) when’s the last time YOU made weeknight plans past 7?? And 2) after 15,000 phones got locked up at the show.. should phones be banned at concerts and comedy shows?

Then the hack every parent needs: the BEST location for an easy kids’ birthday party is.. a public golf course?? Hear us out: communal area, picnic tables, food from the shack, kids running wild, zero rules. We will be taking no further questions, just look up your local public course hahaha

Two rabbit holes we fell down after talking about golf: chess is officially recognized as a SPORT?! (we learn how sports are actually classified, and golfers & bowlers are in the same category hahaha) and the paper straw PLOT TWIST.. a new study has plastic straws winning, and we have never felt more vindicated.

Plus it’s a festive week over here: costumes are required at extracurriculars (treats TBD, comment if you bring them!!), we’re making breakfast tacos for our trash guys (the Harlem Globetrotters of trash, iykyk), and we’re making the case that going to Spirit Halloween is a LOST ART. Plus Alex is hosting a mahjong night tonight for her best friend’s new app, which turns into the real talk: be a cheerleader for your friends, because it’s never too late to pivot.

Then on the table: Ziploc x Cheerios (resealable cereal bags, FINALLY), why more brands need to bring back mascots (Tony the Tiger supremacy), and the Halloween-week debate: couples costumes, cringe or cute?!

Finally, the Bicker of the Week comes from YOUR DMs: he told the waiter it was their anniversary to get free dessert on an early date.. she says cheap, he says hilarious. Our ruling depends entirely on his motive hahaha. Weigh in!!

Happy Halloween week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  4. ‘One and done’ parenting, kid-free flights & should toddler birthdays have gift registries?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! We’re coming off a BIG weekend: F1 with the kids (Tate is now a race car girl, more on that later) and the first annual father/child weekend!! Alex Kost and Ace came to town and the boys were booked and busy.. gymnastics drop-in, boat breakfast, short rib tacos (Harrison has a marquee dish now??) and the UT game. Which brings us to a new framework: PTO (Parent Time Off) credits.. and why bringing your kid on the boys trip actually EARNS you some hahaha

But first: Jules has a Taylor Swift announcement (the new songs grow on you, it’s science), and we need a ruling from the audience: do you ACTUALLY need insurance to rent a car?? Someone who knows, please weigh in!!

A solids update for everyone who asked: the difference between 1st kid energy (a regimented feeding PROGRAM) and 2nd kid energy (looking around the kitchen like.. banana it is). And we found THE Christmas shopping spot. We’re not gatekeeping, it’s in the episode, and yes there’s a Ferris wheel.

Then it’s what’s on the table today?!

🧸 Parenting: the “one and done parenting” take going viral.. does having one kid actually mean MORE parenting? And why we keep bringing our toddler to new experiences (the F1 takeaway).

🍿 Pop culture: the Love Is Blind couple MIGHT be getting back together?! Plus Jennifer Lawrence responding to Connor Wood calling her his celebrity crush (and the shirt he made about it hahaha)

💼 Business: JetBlue is testing kid-free flights?! We have thoughts.. and they’re not what you’d expect. Also: a military dog startup just hit a $1.2B valuation and we’re still processing.

💻 Technology: iPhone Duo reviews are in (getting it or skipping it?) and how much would YOU pay for guaranteed WiFi on a flight?

🃏 Wildcard: The http://Dictionary.com word of the year is maxxing???

OK the other random stuff before we go… House update: PERMITS APPROVED!! The fence could go in this week. Plus Book Club is back with The Five Types of Wealth, and the Bicker of the Week: committing to family dinner.. one of us sets the menu at 10am, one of us “will never make a firm meal commitment.” You can guess who. And we close with your question: should toddler birthdays have gift registries? One of us defends it, one of us is OUT.. comment your take!!

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  5. Thumb sucking, toddler shyness & are permanent holiday lights TACKY or WORTH IT?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy FRIDAY!! We open with the debate you guys started: permanent holiday lights. The comments say they’re the answer to our white lights vs. colored lights problem.. we say lights go UP and lights come DOWN (or you lose the specialness!!). Tacky or worth it, we need votes!!

A follow up on the budgeting app: the no-spend era is real. Alex is now submitting purchase requests to the CFO of the household (Jules jk lol) live on the pod (makeup remover, toy bins and hangers: APPROVED hahaha). Jules is also headed to a baby shower this weekend, which gets us into going splitsies on gifts, the wedding card she bought three years ago and never sent (it’s getting a baby drawn on it and a second life), and the sweetest story we’ve heard in a while about a shirt our friend has worn since his first date.. which turns into the real question: what are the sentimental items you will NEVER throw away?

What we’re watching corner: a Heated Rivalry update (season one is coming to theaters?!), the Elizabeth Holmes documentary feedback (every single person says GO, we’re going), and the Love Is Blind clip that has Harrison asking if he needs to start watching.

PLUS we announce our lunch giveback winner.. Dani from Seattle, DM us!!!

Then it’s what’s on the table today?!

🧸 Parenting: is my toddler shy, or is it just a new situation? (the dance class name song has us thinking) and thumb sucking vs. the pacifier.. Rocky has officially chosen the thumb and we’re at peace with it.

🍿 Pop culture: Selena Gomez quit vaping and used her platform to say it’s not worth it, which somehow leads to remembering when restaurants had SMOKING SECTIONS??

💼 Business: Airbnb is banning checkout chore lists (great news.. unless the cleaning fees go up?) and SpaceX & Tesla are exploring a merger, aka Elon negotiating with himself hahaha

💻 Technology: half the internet needs a security patch (and it’s apparently a 9.2/10 problem???)

We close with the Bicker of the Week: “I’ll be ready in a second”.. a second is not a unit of time Harrison recognizes. Plus the question of the week from Grace on YouTube: what’s the best and hardest part of having two kids close in age?

Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! We start off with the HARD-HITTING question everyone is talking about: what’s the perfect pool temperature? (lol) But really, Harrison started the morning with a 6:55am father/daughter swim (pool heated to a magnificent 92 degrees), so now we NEED to know.. comment yours, and nobody ask about our heating bill hahaha

House updates: the fence is officially in fabrication!! The front yard should be done in two weeks (check back with us then), and the outdoor kitchen behind the pool is “best case Thanksgiving”.. or best case Christmas, depending which one of us you ask. Which, speaking of the holidays, this is your friendly reminder to book your flights NOW.. they’re up 31% from last year (Christmas flights too, up 23%!!)

Jules has a baby shower this weekend, which gets us into the best baby shower gift that isn’t on her registry (the answer involves a monogram, and we stand by it). And things are THRIVING on our block: our neighbors celebrated their 25th anniversary by swapping the Halloween decorations for hearts for ONE week (she tried on her wedding dress for everyone in the neighborhood.. we’re obsessed with them), postcards are officially the lost art we’re bringing back, and the booing is spreading.. our neighbors are Googling the rules and taking it seriously!!

A follow up on the budgeting app Harrison built us with AI: it’s WORKING (a text every morning with yesterday’s spend, the month to date, and how we’re tracking against budget).

In an effort to bring some structure, we’re calling this next section “What’s on the table?!”. And on the table TODAY… The Coterie Golf Digest ad, which we’re giving a 10/10: the first baby brand to EVER advertise in a golf magazine, because moms carry 71% of the mental load and dads can’t share the load if no one’s talking to them. In pop culture: the DWTS pregnancy announcement (and live gender reveal!!) that had everyone crying. Plus the Victoria’s Secret fashion show comeback: the fantasy bra is back, 15 of the 60 models were moms, and Harrison is mostly mad he missed the stock run hahaha. And another great debate: custom license plates, cool or cringe?!

We close with a question from the audience: the grandparents have been drinking on babysitting duty.. is that normal?? Which gets us into our babysitter non-negotiables and why clear is kind. Tell us yours!!

Hope everyone is having a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  7. Our first parents-only vacation, introducing solids & why your toddler needs older friends

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! We’re back from the parents-only trip to Jackson Hole!! And we were greeted with the sweetest thing Tate has ever said (“I missed you”).. so naturally we’re never leaving again hahaha

Which kicks off the kids corner: can a 2 year old ACTUALLY miss their parents? Why do kids save their meltdowns for YOU (spoiler: it’s actually a compliment)? And the take we stand by: we don’t FaceTime the kids while we’re away.. it’s for you, not them (discuss). Plus Tate spent the day playing with the 5 year old across the street and we watched her level UP in real time (the sharing song WORKED and we’ve never been prouder), and Rocky started solids on his half birthday!! (And we think he likes food more than his sister??? hahaha)

The trip itself: 72 hours of undivided attention with the neighbors (who shall now be known as Mr. & Mrs. Bears), an activity-based itinerary with one non-negotiable per day, and Alex solving a live influencer brand-trip mystery at lunch like a detective. All of which leads to the real question: what makes a good travel companion? Oh, and the Tetons are named after.…. you’ll have to listen.

In other news: Abercrombie is CRUSHING college apparel, we need to STOP saying “go to market” (and all corporate buzzwords), Harrison is building us a family budgeting app (if you have one you love, comment it!!), we need to see the Elizabeth Holmes documentary, and we design our fence LIVE on the pod.

Then we’re in full holiday mode: an audience question on keeping a Christmas party adults-only, planning OUR Christmas party (black tie.. with bbq??), family Halloween costume ideas, and the debate we need you to settle: is November 1st too early to decorate for Christmas?! (Pls let us know in the comments)

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  8. Navigating mom guilt, work-life balance & 4 kids as CEO of fastest growing women’s health company

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! We have a special guest: Victoria Thain Gioia, co-founder & CEO of Perelel, Harvard MBA.. and most importantly, a working mom of 4 (ages 9, 7, 6 & 2!!)

We start with the story behind it all: a 20-week scan that didn’t go as expected, and how obsessing over the “why” sent Victoria deep into prenatal nutrition research.. deep enough that she pitched her OB a company idea mid-appointment (from the stirrups!!) The big takeaway: one-size-fits-all doesn’t work for women.

Then we get into the part we know you guys most want to hear: what it actually looks like to run a company with 4 kids at home. The 5am wake-ups, white-knuckling it from 7 to 7:50 every morning, the 2.5 year old who interrupts her work calls for a scheduled cuddle (we’re obsessed), and the mom guilt conversation we think every working parent needs to hear: “I’m a better mom because I work.” Plus why her answer to “is this worth it?” lives in a photo from her daughter’s school project.

We also talk about why there is NOTHING more powerful than the mom group chat (you’re not on an island, we’re all on the island together), the work-life balance advice that makes her laugh, and the realities of working motherhood.

We finish up with the women’s health research gap: women weren’t included in clinical trials until 1993, less than 10% of funding goes to women’s health, and what Perelel is pledging to change that. Then we close with rapid fire: what every TTC couple should know, the wellness trend she wishes would die, and the thing she wishes was talked about more.

Thank you Victoria!! Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  9. Positive parenting, siblings at birthday parties & is asking to stay with friends RUDE?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! Before anything else: we’re doing an audience check-in!! Comment what you want to hear more of (Q&As? guests? news rundown? pop culture?) and we’re picking one comment and sending you to your favorite lunch spot on us ($100!!) So comment!!

By the time you’re listening, we’re in Jackson Hole on a couples trip with the neighbors!! Alex packed a carry-on (brave), Harrison packed “extreme” location-specific outfits, and there are custom t-shirts involved that we legally (lol) cannot spoil yet. But leaving the kids had us in our feelings.. we thought we’d be excited for the getaways and honestly the break from the kids is zero percent of the excitement?? Which leads us to the parenting cliches that are ACTUALLY true: no phase lasts that long, and every chapter is somehow better than the last (meanwhile “sleep when the baby sleeps”.. like who is doing the laundry??? hahaha)

Mid-episode, Harrison needs to vent about the new sales tactic that has to stop: strangers sending UNSOLICITED calendar invites (“hey, I spoke to Alex!!” no. no you did not.) But, in happier news, our whole street is in the Halloween spirit and it’s proof that neighborhood morale starts with ONE house (we got boo’d!! we’re booing back!!) Plus the bike bus: have you seen these?? Whole neighborhoods biking to school together.. there are 200+ of these programs now and we’re obsessed.

THIS WEEK WE LEARNED: positive parenting literally wires kids’ brains for joy. A new study found praise at age 3 shows up in brain scans at 18?! It confirmed what we see every time Tate shows us an outfit she’s proud of (and like honestly with ourselves??? Love being around positive people).

And the big viral debates this week: is it rude to ask to stay at your friend’s place when you travel?? Jules would be OFFENDED if a friend came to Austin and didn’t stay with her, Harrison is a forever hotel guy, so we need your votes. Same with siblings at birthday parties: family invite or just the kid on the card?!

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  10. Why life gets better with age, child-led potty training & how much football is too much?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! EURO JULES IS BACK!! The trip recap is lowkey scattered throughout the entire episode (sry), but the highlights: a Tuscany wedding, a “2 hour” drive that was actually 4.5 through scenery Jules swears is Pittsburgh adjacent (it’s a compliment??), and a new barometer for measuring the success of a trip.

But first, Alex gets sent to the mall with a box of Harrison’s returns and gets absolutely humbled at the counter (“ma’am, has this been washed?”).. so we need a ruling: can you return a shirt you already washed?!

The wedding’s pizza night spirals us into the food corner: pizza vs burgers for America’s favorite food (the official ranking has burgers & fries not at #1.. Alex is appealing the decision), mashed potatoes catch a STRAY (“it’s literally a liquid French fry”), and milk is in bags in Canada?!

We get into why traveling at 30 beats traveling at 22, and the real theme of this episode: life gets BETTER with age. Alex keeps meeting 38 year olds doing really cool things, and instead of fearing getting older.. knowing that’s when the hard work pays off.

Football is in FULL swing: Harrison made corn dogs from SCRATCH for the Red River Rivalry (the secret is dipping the dog in a cup of batter), Sooner Magic was sprinkled (BOOMER!), and the question of the week (NOT a new segment): how much football is a dad allowed to watch in a weekend? We landed on zero uninterrupted games at home.. but the better the behavior, the longer the leash hahaha.

Then the parenting corner: Tate is OFFICIALLY in need of her own suitcase (maybe a ride-on one??) and the article claiming child-led potty training is becoming a problem. We did child-led, so we have thoughts (and a Tate update: she’s batting 80-90%!!)

Plus Tobey Maguire officiated his ex-wife’s wedding with their kids in the front row (we’re here for it), the Bicker of the Week: starting a show as a couple.. aka Harrison waited 45 minutes and Alex’s head hit the pillow (point: Harrison), and we close with Harrison’s 3 jet lag tips!!

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  11. Terrible twos, toddler language explosion & Gen Z slang EXPLAINED

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy FRIDAY!! Anyone else keeping up with Jules’ insta story?? (bc we are and like need to book a Euro trip ASAP?!)

Alex kicks us off with her girls night recap (which apparently she already recapped to Harrison last night) (and this morning) (hahahhaha blame the margaritas). Harrison also has some thoughts on her outfit.. sorry to the audio listeners (you’ll have to use your imagination lol).

The business corner is packed this week: is Starbucks actually buying Chipotle?! Harrison breaks down the CEO shuffle and what it would mean. Nvidia is officially the most valuable company EVER. Plus, SpaceX just made a move that could make it your next cellphone carrier?? Over in AI land, Ben Affleck is suddenly everywhere talking artificial intelligence, and everyone is debating: actual tech savant or cosplay? And the Kardashians’ AI trailer confusion raises the real question of how you can even tell what’s real anymore.

    THEN P (our Gen Z rep) quizzes A & H on Gen Z lingo…aura farming, crash out, it’s giving...(spoiler: their millennial-ness was showing ahahaha).

In the parenting corner, Tate is in a full language explosion, Alex is officially rebranding the “terrible twos” as the terrific twos, and we react to 5 controversial parenting takes (sweeping generalizations do NOT go over well).

And finally, the Bicker of the Week: sharing towels with your partner.. yes or HECK NO?!

  12. Walking to school, Airbnb-gate & and an update on my postpartum journey

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! Wea open with the homework we promised: the Jura vs. Mr. Coffee blind taste test (but also promised this section was 2.5 minutes MAX lol) Results? Closer than you'd think (about a 10% difference.. the Jura wins on ease, Mr. Coffee holds its own).

On the home front: a postpartum update - Alex's first cycle is back, the bloodwork results are in, and the TLDR is she needs iron (P has a rec, but as always its #NotMedicalAdvice). Also Tate's sleep is back to normal, fingers crossed.. she asked to go to her own bed, and we're crediting the block party. Our neighborhood did “Night Out”: street blocked off, everyone brings a dish, the firefighters come by and the kids sit in the fire trucks. Tate played SO hard. When Alex said “night night?" she said "yeah" hahaha

Then the parenting corner: the peak road trip age according to YOU is 7 to 12 (makes sense.. below seven, a park is a park lol), and the tiny habit that builds your kid's confidence: when they say "mama, LOOK".. look. Every time. They need to know they're more important than whatever you're doing.

Then Harrison's conference learnings: where consultants think GLP-1s are headed (25% of adults in the US!!) and a theory on Gen Z drinking that traces it to whoever was in college during COVID.

Plus THINGS WE DMED: the college girl selling ad space on her dorm wall.. we're reaching out to buy a spot, and we may or may not be selling our own backdrop once before the studio move lol.. And continuing rapid fire on topics: AIRBNB-GATE (65% of reviews are five stars?? the internet has questions), Utah becoming the first state to let AI prescribe medication (starting with acne.. low risk, easier access, we're watching), THIS WEEK WE LEARNED kids who walk or bike to school do measurably better in class (a 12 minute walk can last four hours into the school day!!), Lane Johnson retiring for his mental health (no stage too big to take care of yourself.. RESPECT), and the college tour road trip we're officially stealing: our neighbor drove his daughter to 16 schools up the East Coast. We have 16 years to plan ours and we've already started hahaha

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  13. Spoiled kids, horseback riding lessons & when do road trips ACTUALLY get fun?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! Quick housekeeping: Jules is officially off on her Euro trip, which means P is filling in ON THE MIC this week.. (everyone say hi to P!!)

We open with a confession: we joined the Jura cult (anyone else??? the neighbors are founding members lol) Alex gives a full review of the new coffee maker, PLUS a question that spirals us: does anyone actually know / care where their coffee beans come from? You know your wine regions.. why don't we know our coffee?

Then road trips: fresh off ours, we need to know at what age they get FUN with kids (comment when yours turned the corner!!) Like we are IN on the Fort Worth Stockyards (EVERYONE needs to make this family trip).. but the HOW of getting there isn't so great with 2 under 2(ish). And a Bicker of the Week brought to you by I-35: does the driver control the radio?!

OK listening back, this was a very Texas episode.. the big news: Tate rode her first horse!! Which opened the question we weren't ready for: are we doing horseback riding lessons? (Alex: "Do you know what a horse COSTS??") Plus Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" hit 24 weeks at number one and we have to ask: is Texas single-handedly carrying this chart? (Or is something else going on??) And the ACL mudfest: knee-deep mud, Uber drivers canceling on anyone covered in it, and honestly.. we get it (but also people need rides!!)

Then the parenting corner: the nanny share logistics you asked about (yes, there are cribs EVERYWHERE), spoiled kids aren't born they're RAISED (we get into the delayed gratification learnings and the habits we're watching in ourselves), and speaking of habits we created: Tate is sleeping in our bed, we let it happen, and we knew exactly what we were doing (one of us got in the CRIB last night, we're fine).

Finally, a hot airline take from the DMs: carry-ons should cost $25 and checked bags should be free. Think about it: every single boarding problem is a carry-on problem. Plus the ADHD pen analogy that will itch your brain, and your daily reminder to check your food labels.. this week's discovery HURT (RIP to a beloved bread for us).

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  14. Balancing career, kids & everything else with our family framework

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! As you guys know, last Saturday we spoke at Dear Media by Day, and our panel was called “Having It All-ish: Career, Kids & the New Reality of Balance.” We had SO much fun up there that we knew before we left the stage: we had to bring it to you guys. So consider this the run-back.. and if you were there, act surprised lol

Here's the premise: we were told we could have it all. The career, the relationship, the family, the social life, and somehow eight hours of sleep. But like HOW?! For us, the honest answer is a system we've never fully explained on the pod until now: our FAMILY FRAMEWORK. The six buckets we value most as a couple, ranked 1 to 10, monitored constantly. When they're full, we're happy. When one dips, we don't wing it.. we name it, and we play offense.

We get into how the buckets came to be (Harrison's observation that the richest people he knew weren't the happiest.. the most balanced ones were), and then we deep dive ONE bucket (relationship) as an example (but NOTE: the same principles can be applied across all!!). You'll hear how the framework catches the slow slide before it becomes resentment, the exact language we use to bring something up without putting each other on defense, and the math for deciding where the energy goes: taking a bucket from a 3 to a 7 beats polishing a 9 to a 10. And if you're someone who gets overwhelmed easily, this might be the most useful part: "I'm overwhelmed" becomes "THIS bucket is overwhelming me," and suddenly it's solvable.

Then the career section: how having kids changed our ambition (short version: career ambition unchanged, LIFE ambition never higher), the sacrifices we have and haven't made, and the misconception we each had about kids before vs. after.

And your questions from the panel: do we still believe in balance now that we have kids (more than ever, actually), what Alex has stopped feeling guilty about in motherhood, what to do if you're scared kids will derail your career momentum, and how to decide what deserves your energy.. which turned out to literally be the buckets hahaha

Tell us in the comments: which bucket are you focused on right now?

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING, and happy weekend :-)

    Timestamps:

00:00:00 Welcome back to Two Parents & A Podcast!

00:00:54: Why we're running the panel back for YOU (if you were there.. act surprised lol)

00:01:23 Introduction to our family framework

00:05:45 How the 6 buckets came to be…

    00:09:24 Bucket deep dive: Relationship

00:14:01 How we decide which bucket gets our energy

00:15:55 THIS is why the family framework is so helpful

00:18:09 Career Q: How has having kids changed your ambition?

00:27:17 Career Q: The career sacrifices we have & haven't made since kids

00:25:09 Career Q: One misconception we had about kids.. before vs. after

00:27:03 Audience Q: Now that you have kids, do you still believe in balance?

00:28:15 Audience Q: What have you stopped feeling guilty about in motherhood?

00:29:56 Audience Q: I'm scared kids will derail my career momentum.. help?

00:33:18 Audience Q: How do I decide what deserves my energy?!

    00:34:43 Our closing thoughts

    THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!

  15. The death of hosting, revisiting childhood hobbies & what do you do if your kid gets hit?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! Getting ahead of this: YES - Alex & Harrison are in the wrong seats (#SocialDistancing). We open with the moments you realize you're THE parent of the house: Alex packing a pizza-and-banana lunch for dance class, Harrison standing in the yard with the plumber feeling like his dad.. and the one that reminded Alex of her childhood: clacking around in heels before Dear Media by Day, hoping Tate remembers the sound the way she remembers her mom's. Plus a DM that's changing our vocabulary: when you're putting on makeup (or heels!!) in front of your daughter, say mom is getting FANCY, not pretty.. because she's always pretty, with or without it.

Then we break our own podcast rule to talk about the weather (a storm is coming and Jules flies out in the THICK of it), padel lesson one is complete (drenched, humbled, hooked), and Jules walks us through her Europe itinerary.. or total lack of one. Milan to Florence to a wedding to Santa Margherita to the south of France, with essentially nothing planned. Send her your suggestions!!

On the homefront: SLEEP UPDATES! Rocky's progress and Tate's new move of joining us in bed.

Then our internet convos: the unspoken rules of men's handshakes (dap, shake or bro hug??), and the big one: hosting in America has collapsed from 42% of people hosting monthly in 1975 to 12% today. We get into why, and our whole case: hosting does not need to be complicated. Monday we texted friends "we're having burgers tonight" and that was the invite. DoorDash counts. Paper plates count. Bring back hosting!! Next: OU vs. Texas week in a house divided (Tate is picking who Harrison bets on lol), the Brooklyn bathroom with a 10 minute TIMER, the case for revisiting your childhood hobbies (what was yours?!), and should we do a Survivor bracket?!

And we close with the one we really want your input on: if your kid gets hit or bitten, what do you teach them to do? We walk through the options, where we've landed for now, and why this might be a Dr. Brown question. Tell us what's worked for your family.

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  16. High-effort friends, third places & will THIS ruin our toddler's sleep habits?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! We are STILL buzzing from Dear Media by Day.. Saturday was AWESOME: panels all day, brand activations, happy hour, and our first time ever doing something like this as a couple. Talking about “having it all (ish)” in front of 300+ people?? SO cool.

One of the best parts: our friends were in that crowd. Even better? We never asked them to come. They found out, bought tickets, and showed up for us. Which is EXACTLY why this week's PSA on friendship felt so timely: you need to start being a "high effort friend." The internet spent years teaching us to cancel plans and call it self care, and the pendulum is officially swinging back (& we're here for it).

As for the panel itself: we talked all about our "family framework." Consider this episode the sneak preview (what it is, how we rank each bucket out loud every week, why it's changed how we bring things up with each other).. and we'll do a FULL episode on it this coming Friday!! Pop questions in the comments and we’ll hit them friday!!

Life stuff: Tate had an "I need cuddles" night and ended up back in our bed.. and we need to know: will THIS ruin our toddler's sleep habits?! Our honest answer: some nights can be just for the memories. Jules is off to Europe, which sparks the great travel debate: do you bring food on a flight? Safety sandwich rules are discussed at length (Italian, NO tomatoes, you're welcome). And our date night giveback winner is announced!!

Then two things we DMed that we're still processing: the "butter" on movie theater popcorn isn't butter (it's soybean oil in a trench coat.. we feel lied to??), and third places are disappearing. Starbucks and McDonald's traded the cozy / fun hangout for the pickup shelf, and we need SOMEONE to figure out balancing vibes with efficiency.

To close: the best investment one mom made once her kids left for college (plane tickets.. go to THEM), and should we go to Japan on our honeymoon?! (aaaand should the neighbors be invited hahaha)

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  17. How we built community on our street, rule breakers vs. followers & is it too early for Halloween?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! We shared a bit about our street this week on socials, and the comments had one big request: "please dig deep on the community y'all have created on the pod." So hi! We get into when it all started, the little ways everyone shows up for each other.. plus the couples trip we just booked with THE neighbors (who we realized we've somehow never hung out with 1:1..) AND, if you want one place to start with YOUR street: host the street-wide barbecue.

Before all that: do you remember the first time your parents embarrassed you in public?? Harrison has a convertible pickup memory, Alex genuinely cannot think of one, and all Jules could come up with was that Nori (Minich) wore a lot of brown LOL.

Then Jules is back from New York with a story we're still processing: she caught her pilot LYING. Pilots need a full 8 hours of rest, hers fudged his timesheet, and someone caught it because the math didn't math. Rules are rules!! (No public shaming.. but a strongly worded DM is coming lol)

On the home front: we are officially a couple who "padels" together, we're going BIG on Halloween because Tate APPROVED the skeletons, and Rocky is giving us 5 to 6 hour stretches since starting the nanny share. There's something to babies being busy and around other babies!!

Plus our coffee GIVEBACK winner is announced (s/o Jetta.. enjoy Hattie's Coffee House in Whitestown, Indiana!!) and the next giveback is live: comment your favorite date night idea and we're treating one of you to it.

Rapid fire: McDonald's says GLP-1 users are their next big opportunity?!, where's the first place you drove when you got your license, the big one: are you a rule follower or a rule breaker?!, handedness is decided in the WOMB?!, the most popular Uber Eats restaurant in America, ergodic theory, and Harrison's AI update: Meta launched Muse (and the rollout is a masterclass).

Come see us at Dear Media by Day TOMORROW!! Sold out, but if you have a ticket: we can't wait!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  18. “Concierge moms”, left-handed kids & do men ACTUALLY notice makeup?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Wednesday!! We open with the question every woman has wondered: do men ACTUALLY notice makeup? Harrison's honest answer confirmed what we suspected (the answer being "no") hahaha. We get into the levels of makeup (1, 2 and 3.. and how "you're so beautiful without makeup" is usually said to a level 1), what the "right" age is for kids to start wearing it, and the getting-ready gap: his entire routine is teeth and deodorant, hers is a production with a budget.

Next up, a weaning update from Alex: the fog is lifting!! Things that felt really big are starting to feel manageable again, and for anyone in it right now: they say the hormone transition can affect you for 1 to 3 weeks. The only way out is through, and it DOES get better. (Oh and Harrison’s excited he can not eat my food)

We also have a debate we need your help settling: what causes a kid to be left-handed?! Harrison is going full speculator mode (his smudge theory involves ink, school desks, and a prediction that computers will create MORE lefties), and we need every left-handed listener to sound off in the comments. Plus a quick pause for panel outfit planning.. (come see us at Dear Media by Day THIS Saturday!!)

Over in the internet section: a PSA that the algorithm cannot tell your hate comments from your love comments (if you don't care, don't engage!!), Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is back for Season 5, and Jules' DWTS corner: the pregnant pro, a prediction we're putting on the record, and her rec for making any reality show better: a "watch party" group chat. Plus the iced coffee at an interview saga continues.. the recruiters found Alex's TikTok and they are MAD.

And Harrison's corner: the best performing stock in the S&P 500 over the last 45 years will genuinely surprise you (hint: "something with jugs" lol), and the New York Times covered a trend we can't stop thinking about: parents are hiring "concierge moms" to check on their college kids?! Errands, energy drinks, X-ray rides.. we get into whether this is genius or a step too far.

And a giveback to close: comment your favorite LOCAL coffee shop (on YouTube or Spotify) and we're randomly giving one of you a $100 gift card to that exact spot (HOT COFFEE ONLY lol)!! Finally, the sweetest thing we learned this week: matching with your toddler isn't just cute, it's a visual cue that you're on a TEAM.

Hope everyone is having a great week :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!

  19. We became the over-the-top birthday party parents… (+ big news & the iced coffee debate)

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!! First, the big news: WE ARE OFFICIALLY A DEAR MEDIA PRODUCTION!! (yay) If you're new here from the Dear Media world: hi!! We're Alex and Harrison, married, two kids (Tate and Rocky), and the “third-wheel” (lovingly) is Jules our producer!!! Welcome, we're so happy you're here. And if you’re not new here, the short story is - nothing is changing!!!

Then we get into the episode with a confession: we are officially the parents who throw the over-the-top birthday parties. The exact parents we judged before we had kids. We get into why we've fully made peace with it (the joy is REA), plus the undisputed best time slot for a toddler birthday party: 5 to 7 PM. Everyone's out of nap territory, people are always looking for something to do during this dead zone, and dinner is handled. We will be taking no further questions at this time hahaha

And the rest: Harrison is teetotaling 13 out of 14 days “per week” (his math, not ours lol), the Tweet of the Week we're carrying into fall ("the curse of no discipline is every year looks the same"), and the TikTok discourse we had to weigh in on: is going to your friend's birthday party optional?! Plus a Rocky update: he's officially in the nanny share and he LOVES it.

Then book club: Princess Diana's brother wrote a memoir about her (Swan Song, out tomorrow!!), and Harrison's corner: Warren Buffett officially stepped down from Berkshire Hathaway (we think it might be because he’s 96 but idk you tell us lol). The math will break your brain: $1,000 invested with him in 1965 is worth almost $60 MILLION today. We get into what made him one of one, whether anyone can do it again, and Alex's hot take that Paris Hilton is the Warren Buffett of influencing (out of respect for Mr. Buffett, Harrison disagrees LOL).

We close with the dog corner: two studies say dogs are genuinely good for your brain (dog owners, your pet might be syncing to YOUR stress levels??), our updated family dog rules (short version: no diapers in the house), and the internet's current debate: can you bring an iced coffee to a job interview?!

Hope everyone has a great week :-) LOVE YOU!

  20. Tate's 2nd birthday, the ultimate mom car & the dictionary got 1400 new words?!

    Show notes

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! TATE IS OFFICIALLY TWO 🥹 (can you guys believe it?!) We recap the whole thing: the pancake breakfast, the revolving door of neighbors and family, and Alex stepping up for an emergency cake bake after a flight delay. As always, this is just our experience.. but here are a few "tips" if you have a toddler birthday coming up!! 1) Even if your kid "won't remember it," they still feel the JOY.. a day of your kid feeling extra loved is ALWAYS worth the extra effort. 2) Doctoring a box cake WORKS: yellow cake + pudding + OJ, coconut milk icing.. gluten and dairy free, and there was NONE left. 3) The balloon farm: buy the helium tank, order the animal balloons, and blow them up together the night before (it's like Christmas Eve 2.0).

Oh, and Tate got a CAR (thank you Harrison's parents hahaha)

Before all that: a pool update featuring Harrison's confession about the lawn chairs, and a question for the group: does anyone's neighborhood have a "share program" for tools and yard equipment?? Our street is PRIMED for a communal lawn mower and we need to know if this exists.

Then some fun stuff: is a self-driving MINIVAN the ultimate mom car?! (someone is going to make a lot of money on this). Our favorite quintessential (is that the word??) Austin restaurants (comment yours, we're building the list!), and Merriam-Webster added almost 1,400 new words: “looksmaxxing” is officially a word, and Harrison has feelings about this… Then a POOP-GATE update: we’ve renamed Harrison “Flip Flop Fugman”, iykyk. Plus we co-sign the comment that HYROX is just adult PE class (LOL)… then in college football corner: The Athletic shared what every team pays its players, and it’s different than we thought???

We close with the Bicker of the Week (are outside shoes allowed on the bath mat?! + Jules's mildew-proof solution that might end the fight), and what we're watching: Alex is on the classics train (Parent Trap, Lizzie McGuire) and Harrison finally finished The Gentlemen.

Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!
