Vipers newcomer Joe Clarke on playing with Babar in the PSL & plenty more!
Season 5, Episode 40
Show notes
This time we catch up with another Vipers new boy, Englishman Joe Clarke.
Joe was picked up at the auction in early October and coming up we hear from him on his background, his brilliant form over the past couple of years, his ambitions for the new season and plenty more. Joe has been in superb form in the past couple of years in shortform cricket and he carried that form across all formats in the 2026 UK summer.
His red ball form was outstanding, averaging well in excess of 50 and that was on top of brilliance in The Hundred for Birmingham Phoenix and his county side Nottinghamshire, leading the latter to T20 Blast finals day.
We speak about his development as a T20 player and also the fact that he’s no stranger to franchise competitions, having played in the Pakistan Super League alongside fellow Vipers newcomer Babar Azam, as well as in the Big Bash League in Australia.
Joe may not have played for the senior England team but he has featured for the Lions, the England second team, as well as the under-19s, and part of our chat sees him talking about his aspirations, not only for the Vipers but also more broadly for his county side and his chances of taking the next step to full England honours.
Joe also talks us through his previous experience in the DP World ILT20 as he previously played two seasons for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. That included playing alongside Andries Gous and with playing under Vipers Head Coach James Foster at Birmingham Phoenix, it means there’ll be plenty of familiar faces for Joe when he steps into the dressing room for the first time.

Harry Tector, the Vipers' first Ireland signing!
Season 5, Episode 39
Show notes
We hear from Harry Tector, the franchise’s first-ever signing from Ireland.
The tall right-handed batter was picked up by the Vipers at the auction in early October and he talks with us about family (and a unique cricketing achievement by himself, his two brothers and one sister) and his past franchise experience, from featuring in the Caribbean Premier League to playing in Nepal and Bangladesh.
Harry also talks us through his love of bowling, gives us the low-down on time spend with English county side Gloucestershire and he reflects on the inaugural European T20 Premier League that took place in the Netherlands and Ireland in August and September. Harry played for the Dublin team owned by India legend Rahul Dravid and which included James Vince, once of the Gulf Giants but now heading for Sharjah in Season 5 of the DP World ILT20.
Harry speaks about the prospect of featuring in a squad with so many world-class players, his own aspirations for the DP World ILT20 this season and what it means to Irish cricket to have guaranteed spots for players in every franchise.
It’s a terrific chat, and it's well worth your time. And if you want to watch Harry and the team in person this season then go to www.thedesertvipers.com/fixtures for details of how to get hold of tickets.

Hassan Nawaz is back for the Vipers - & tickets are now on sale for Season 5!
Season 5, Episode 38
Show notes
We’re back with some news: Pakistan powerhouse batter Hassan Nawaz has signed for the Vipers for Season 5.
He replaces England top-order player Aneurin Donald, who was one of the franchise’s purchases at the auction at the start of October. Aneurin has now withdrawn from this season’s tournament after being selected for England’s Twenty20 International series against Australia scheduled for November and December, and the Vipers have moved fast to bring back Hasan in his place after the latter played his part in the Season 4 triumph earlier this year.
We hear from Director of Cricket Tom Moody on the situation but ahead of that is more news – this time that tickets have now gone on sale for Season 5’s action.
The Vipers are first in action on the tournament’s opening night, Saturday the 21st of November, against MI Emirates at the Dubai International Stadium in a repeat of last season’s final, and if you want to experience that match in person then head across to thedesertvipers.com/fixtures for details of how you can secure your spot.

Vipers Analyst Freddie Wilde on the auction - plus the fixtures for Season 5 are here!
Season 5, Episode 37
Show notes
This time, in the wake of the Season 5 auction that took place at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City on the 1st of October, we speak with Vipers Analyst Freddie Wilde as he takes us behind the curtain of what auction preparations and the event itself look like from the perspective of a franchise looking to secure the best talent available.
It’s a terrific insight into what goes on within a set-up both before and during an auction and it’s well worth your time.
The fact the auction has taken place really is a starting gun for the race towards Season 5, which is due to get underway in the third week of November and in fact, as we were going live with this podcast, the fixtures for the new season have been announced, with the Vipers beginning the title defence with a repeat of last season’s final, against MI Emirates at the Dubai International Stadium on Saturday the 21st of November.
The Vipers have 10 group matches, two each against the five other teams, finishing up with a match against Gulf Giants, again in Dubai, on Sunday the 13th of December. The finals series then kicks in from December the 16th, with the final in Dubai on Sunday the 20th.
As ever here on Vipers Voices, we’ll keep you up to date with all the latest news within the Vipers camp as the clock ticks down towards that start.
Something else that has come out since our previous podcast is a renewal of the Vipers’ deal with JA Resorts, a place where the team has stayed throughout the history of the DP World ILT20.
The bonus in this renewal is that JA now has its own dedicated state-of-the-art facility right on the doorstep of the team hotel and that’s something that is already offering significant value to the Vipers as a home for the Talent Pathway Programme, which is now in its second year of operation. And the players selected in the auction will get the benefit of those facilities when they start gathering in mid-November ahead of Season 5 as the Vipers attempt to become the first side to win back-to-back DP World ILT20 titles.

Jack Luffman & Vriitya Aravind wrap up the Development Tournament!
Season 5, Episode 35
Show notes
This time we have a bumper episode for you as we wrap up the ILT20 Development Tournament, the event that saw UAE players given the opportunity to showcase their talent before next month’s DP World ILT20 auction ahead of Season 5.
The side representing the Desert Vipers finished as runners-up for the second successive season, losing out in the final to the Gulf Giants team by four wickets.
Coming up we hear from Jack Luffman, the Desert Vipers’ Development Lead, who was head coach of the team at the Development Tournament, as well as Vriitya Aravind, who was captain of the side.
And we also hear from two of the Vipers squad who are part of the Desert Vipers’ Talent Pathway Programme (TPP) – Punya Bhatia and Ayaan Misbah. They give us their reflections on the value of the Development Tournament as part of their growth as players.
And there’s good news for Ayaan as he’s been named in the UAE senior squad for the first time off the back of the Development Tournament, for the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 series event in the USA featuring not only the hosts but also Namibia, with those matches taking place in Dallas from October the 3rd to the 11th. Ayaan’s inclusion is a tremendous achievement for the 17 year-old batter and also a source of pride for the Vipers given Ayaan’s participation in the Talent Pathway Programme.
Ayaan becomes the second TPP player to be selected for a senior UAE side after Janani Thirukkumaran, who debuted for the women's national team in June of this year.
Also in the latest UAE men's squad are fast bowler Khuzaima bin Tanveer, such a key player for the Vipers in the title-winning DP World ILT20 Season 4, and former Vipers Ali Naseer and Tanish Suri.
A reminder, too, that the auction ahead of DP World ILT20 Season 5 takes place on Thursday the 1st of October in Dubai and we’ll be here, on Vipers Voices, afterwards, with all the reaction to the bidding and with details of who the Vipers will have in their squad as the franchise attempts to become the first team to defend the DP World ILT20 title.

The Vipers lose a thrilling Development Tournament final!
Season 5, Episode 34
Show notes
In this episode we look back at the final of the ILT20 Development Tournament, that wrapped up at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City on Thursday evening, the 24th of September.
Sadly, it was a step too far for Vriitya Aravind’s side as they lost by four wickets to the Gulf Giants, but it was a terrific match to cap a fantastic competition that showcased the very best of UAE talent ahead of the DP World ILT20 player auction at the start of October.
After we recap on the final, we hear from Desert Vipers Development Lead Jack Luffman, the team’s head coach for the tournament, with his reflections on the ultimate match and the event as a whole.
It’s worth saying at this juncture too that the Vipers’ side’s appearance in the Development Tournament final means that it’s four domestic finals in a row for the franchise – two in the DP World ILT20 and now two in the Development Tournament – and that’s a pretty impressive effort by any measure.

The Vipers are into the Development Tournament final!
Season 5, Episode 33
Show notes
In this episode we look back on the Vipers’ team’s semi-final against the Sharjah Warriorz, at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City on Wednesday evening, the 23th of September. And it was another back-from-the-dead victory for Vriitya Aravind’s side, by 25 runs, which means they are in Thursday night’s final against the Gulf Giants.
We hear from head coach Jack Luffman, the Desert Vipers' Development Lead, who gives us his perspective on another remarkable night of action.
The Gulf Giants team, the Vipers’ opponents in the ultimate match, were the leading line-up in the league stage with four wins from their five matches, and they brushed aside the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders side in the first semi-, winning by six wickets with a remarkable 23 balls in hand, chasing 172 to win.
As for the Vipers, they ended up facing the Warriorz after finishing third in the league stage, while the Warriorz were second – both teams ended up on six points from three wins and two losses, but the Warriorz were ahead thanks to net run-rate.
In the semi-final, the Vipers made 171 for nine batting first and, in reply, the Warriorz made 146, also for nine wickets.

Vipers win to seal a semi-final place!
Season 5, Episode 32
Show notes
In this episode we look back on an incredible victory for the Vipers side in their final league match of the tournament – a must win game against the Dubai Capitals at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City on Monday evening, the 21th of September – and that includes hearing from the Vipers’ Development Lead and Head Coach for this tournament, Jack Luffman.
The Vipers scored 191 for nine batting first only for the Capitals to fly out of the traps in response, racing to 93 without loss in just the eighth over and seemingly on course for a win that would have sent them through to the semi-finals and, at the same time, knocked out the Vipers.
But remarkably, the Vipers then took all 10 Capitals wickets for just 37 runs in a little over six overs to secure a 61-run win as the Capitals were bowled out for 130 in 14 overs.
It means the Vipers now have a day to rest before Wednesday’s semi-final with the prospect of a second successive final in this competition now just one match away.

Vipers slip to defeat against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in latest Development Tournament outing!
Season 5, Episode 31
Show notes
In this episode we look back on a defeat for the Vipers side, at the hands of the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders team, by 88 runs at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City on Sunday evening, the 20th of September.
The ADKR side raced to 196 for eight batting first and the Vipers replied with 108 all out from 15.5 overs.
It’s a result that leaves the Vipers outside the top four places on net run-rate – and with the top four going into the semi-finals, it means the next match, against the side immediately above them, the Dubai Capitals, has become, in effect a quarter-final.

And after the Vipers side’s win against MI Emirates in match one, this time Vriitya Aravind’s team came up short, losing by two wickets to the Sharjah Warriorz side in a repeat of the final of the previous Development Tournament, 12 months ago.
Coming up, we hear from Vriitya as he gives us his perspective on the loss.
All six franchises have sides in the Development Tournament at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City, which serves as a shop window for the UAE players ahead of the player auction in early October that precedes season 5 of the DP World ILT20.
One thing is certain and that is there’s not much time to dwell on the reverse as the Vipers team is next in action just 24 hours later, against Gulf Giants, all part of a short, sharp tournament that lasts just 11 days.

It is those players’ shop window to be noticed and ultimately picked up by the franchises when the auction for Season 5 of the main event happens, in early October.

Tom Moody on player retentions & signings for DP World ILT20 Season 5 & lots more!
Season 5, Episode 26
Show notes
This time we can confirm the players who have been retained and signed by the Vipers for Season 5 of the league.
The organisers have allowed a maximum of four retentions and direct signings ahead of a player auction in October and the players that are now on the Vipers books for a tilt at back-to-back titles are Andries Gous, Dan Lawrence, Shimron Hetmyer and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the latter, the Afghanistan mystery spinner being the franchise’s direct signing.
Coming up we hear from Vipers Director of Cricket Tom Moody, who explains the thinking behind the retentions and the signing, as well as offering an explanation for some of the big names who don’t feature in the retained list and the challenges for the Vipers and other franchises in the face of league regulations relating to players for the coming season.
Tom also talks to us about the recent ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, which saw the Vipers finish third in the five-team event in Guyana, the first time the side had competed outside the UAE – and he discusses the prospect of the Vipers going back-to-back this season. Can the team become the first to retain the DP World ILT20 crown? Well, Tom lets us have his thoughts on that. It’s a great listen, as it always is when Tom speaks, and it’s well worth your time...

Vitel Lawes on life as a Viper - and much more besides!
Season 5, Episode 23
Show notes
Ahead of the Vipers’ Qualifier in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League against the San Francisco Unicorns on Friday night, the match to decide which team goes forward to face the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Grand Final on Saturday, we hear from teenage spin sensation Vitel Lawes.
The 19 year-old, a late call-up for the squad, has featured in every match of the tournament for the franchise, bowling with impressive maturity and control but it was his batting that helped secure the latest win for Shadab Khan’s side, against the Perth Scorchers XI, a result that secured that Qualifier spot.
Vitel was in the midst of his debut international series, the five One-Day Internationals against New Zealand in Guyana and Barbados, when he was offered the chance to join the Vipers and in our chat he explains how that felt and also why he jumped at the opportunity.
Vitel also tells us about his cricketing journey – how it began in his native Jamaica, who his main mentor is and who he looks up to as a cricketing hero.
He also tells about his experience of playing in the GSL, his first franchise tournament, including his dramatic contribution to the win against the Perth Scorchers XI and why he always appears so positive on the field..
Vitel also explains why he’s hungry for more opportunities to ply his trade.
On top of all that, he discusses the Vipers’ prospects in the Qualifier against the San Francisco Unicorns, a match that is win or bust for both teams.
It’s a great introduction to a player who, if he maintains his current trajectory, is someone who will be around at the top level for many years to come.

Shane Dowrich on a nervy win against Perth Scorchers!
Season 5, Episode 22
Show notes
It’s back-to-back wins for the Vipers in the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League, this time beating the Perth Scorchers XI – but this win was by the narrowest margin, just one wicket.
Shadab Khan’s side restricted the Australian team to 112 for six but really struggled to chase that score down and it took last man Vitel Lawes in partnership with Nathan Smith to add 12 runs for the 10th wicket to get the side over the line.
Coming up we hear from assistant coach Shane Dowrich as he talks us through the nervy end to the match and plenty more besides.
The win means that the only way the Vipers can be denied a spot in the play-offs is if the San Francisco Unicorns win and win well against the Lahore Qalandars on Wednesday, the final day of the group stage of the competition.
If the Vipers make it through then they will play in the Qualifier on Friday night with the final the following evening.
