• Law enforcement professionals
• Parents of children who were either lost to, or somehow survived, dating violence

  1. 394. Tara Shuler - She Negotiated Her Way Out of Dangerous Marriage Conversations

    Show notes

Tara Shuler managed to survive a dangerous marriage that nearly killed her.

What she learned she put into a book she calls, "Exit Strategy: The Conversations That Got Me Out Alive."

Her years as a sales trainer helped her survive abuse. And now she is bringing what she learned and teaches to us today.

"Exit Strategy" is the true story of a sales trainer who discovered that the negotiation framework she built for boardrooms was the exact system that got her out of a life-threatening marriage alive.

Tara Shuler did not leave in one brave moment. She left over months of carefully managed conversations, where every word she chose and every word she swallowed was a deliberate, high stakes move. This book pulls back the curtain on that exit, chapter by chapter, paired with the specific conversation controlled tool that made survival possible.

This is an important book that you should consider reading.

    Here is her website. ConvoControl.com.

  2. 378. Re-Release - Bruce Lost His Daughter to Officer-Involved Domestic Violence

    Show notes

This episode comes with a long list of warning signs. The graphic descriptions of domestic violence in this survivor story can be triggering to some. There are instances of "adult language", as well. But the scenes depicted needed to be included so listeners can hear what often happens in unhealthy relationships. Please decide carefully whether you should listen to this episode or not.

We decided to re-release this episode to underscore that domestic violence can touch anyone. It is all too common for any of us to think, "This only happens to someone else, it could never happen to me or my child."

I beg you to get over that thought. Without paying attention to what can happen only makes it more possible of happening to someone you know.

Bruce Bieber's daughter, Abigail Rose Bieber (Abby), was tragically murdered in an officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV) incident on January 29, 2022. She was a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy and was killed by her intimate partner, Daniel Leyden, who was also a detective in the same office. Leyden then committed suicide.

Bruce Bieber has become an advocate against OIDV, working to raise awareness and push for mandatory policies and accountability nationwide to prevent similar tragedies. He shares his family's story and the systemic failures that allowed his daughter's murder to occur. Leyden had a prior history of domestic violence known to the sheriff's office but not acted upon meaningfully.

There is much to be learned about OIDV but also the warning signs ignored by many involved. One of Leyden's ex-girlfriends, Chynna Ratner, is also included in this WHEN DATING HURTS episode. It is haunting to listen to Chynna tell what she experienced. She is fortunate to be alive.

Chynna's story (nd more) can be found on the This Sh*t's Hard Podcast. It features candid, raw, co-hosted conversations with people who "do the hard sh*t".

This Sh*t's Hard Podcast gets right down to the biggest challenges of life, business, and everything in between. They have episodes on dating, building and scaling a brand, changing sexual preferences, the business of fashion, travel wellness, exercise, and entertainment television... and so much more. 5. 395. Callie O’Reilly – A University Student’s Story of Love, Manipulation, Consent & Shame

    Show notes

Callie O'Reilly recently published a memoir about her experiences with domestic violence. It occurred during her time as a university student in Canada. But could have happened anywhere.

Her book, entitled, "Let Me Down: Reflections on Love and Abuse," was a way to explore the "less often talked about" nuanced aspects of abuse with a focus on consent and shame.

In fact, Callie has created the book she wish she had read back when she was 18.

We thank Callie for offering her story to us. We hope a book like hers is read by those who need to see it and learn from her. Too many of us get the truth about what can happen too late.

Sometimes our infatuation with someone fogs our vision. Our innocence is taking advantage of by a predator's manipulation, coercive control, and even violence.

Callie's new book covers the realities of modern relationships: gaslighting, our state of mental health, self acceptance, healing, and reclaiming one's life from the effects of trauma. We thank Callie O'Reilly for joining us.

Here is a link to her book.

  7. 393. Patricia Gordon Stevens - Leaving: The Fear, Shame & Coercive Control Follow After You Escape

    Show notes

This story comes with warnings. If this episode becomes too intense, stop and do what is best for you.

Patricia Gordon Stevens knows what it is like o leave an abusive marital relationship. What she wants people to understand is that leaving is not necessarily the end of the abuse, or the end of the fear.

After leaving her own abusive marriage, Patricia experienced the psychological aftermath that can follow a woman long after she has physically left. The fear, the hyper vigilance, the shame, the erosion of trust in her own judgment, and the difficult process of rebuilding a life that feels safe again.

One of Patricia's strongest messages is "We need to stop simply telling women in abusive relationships to "just leave." it is not helpful. It is complex. And there are risks and psychological consequences. She will tell us about these and more.

Instead, we need to ask, "what can I do to help?"

We compliment Patricia. Because her own experiences informed her novel entitled, "Madness in Memphis."

It is a book that explores coerce of control and what happens psychologically after a woman escapes and abusive relationship.

We call this: Loss of Self Esteem - How Abuse Steals Who You Are.

It is a fairly short episode, so it is easily heard in one sitting. And so you can hear it again and again.

This is a blend of survivor-centered education, psychology, and clear red-flag guidance. And it's all grounded in research.

We call this: Spyware - Detection and Removal.

This is not an interview with a survivor. It is not red flags wrapped into a story. This is about the red flags you need to know so you will never be fooled by someone trying to use digital technology to control and stalk you in a relationship.

It is a fairly short episode, so it is easily heard in one sitting. And so you can hear it again and again.

You might want to take notes. This information can save someone's life.

    Host: Bill Mitchell

If you're experiencing intimate partner abuse, coercive control, or narcissistic abuse—or if you suspect someone you care about is—Riel's story offers critical perspective on spotting red flags early, breaking free, and finding support. You're not alone, and recognizing the patterns can be the first step toward safety and recovery.

Domestic violence resources are available 24/7—reach out if you need help.

  20. 377. Re-Release - Katie - Pt 2 of 2 - Escalation to Emotional, Physical, and Near‑Fatal Violence

    Show notes

This is part two of a two-part story with Katie. Be sure you are ready to hear this story. As it proceeds, you will be hearing about horribly abusive physical violence and actual torture... Trigger warnings need to be expressed due to both the content and graphic descriptions.

If this story is too intense for you, please stop listening and take care of yourself.

    Katie's Story

When Katie met Mark, he appeared as this attractive guy playing amazing bass fiddle in a rockabilly band. She loved his music and soon felt he was the one.

As soon as they were introduced, they were an item from the start. Things happened fast as Mark and Katie seemed to click in all manner of speaking. But, as time wore on, she found herself to be his total support person, seeing to it that his career came first. She was doing everything imaginable to pay the bills and make ends meet. His sole purpose was to find stardom making his music.

Mixed into the relationship came the warning signs that were missed when any person is not educated about them. The isolation. The jealousies. The various kinds of emotional abuse that creep in. And then came physical abuse, which was just horrible.

Katie is fortunate to be alive today. Had Mark finished what he intended, he would have murdered her.

This story is not for everyone. Be careful with those you share this story.
