  1. Climate Social Ecosystem

    Episode 810

    Show notes

We are seeing examples every day of the cause-and-effect of climate change on ecosystems: temperature and species, rainfall and agriculture, drought and community, air quality and health, warming ocean water and migration of people and animals. What's it going to take to motivate change? Let's move beyond inadequate responses to inventive solutions, positive change, and embrace of new systems to provide unexpected outcomes to common problems.

  2. What the Ocean Remembers

    Episode 809

    Show notes

Does the ocean remember? Can we suppose the ocean records memory in the continuity of the marine life reliant on it for sustenance, in the energy it stores from the sun, in the voyages and explorations it has supported through time? The ocean stores energy and sustenance as both remembered and generated knowledge to come, and in its wisdom holds the opportunities for sustainability and for our survival.

    Episode 808

If war was once driven by oil, it has now become a function of electricity as its foundational resource, enabled by a grid which is currently unable to meet today’s ever-increasing demand. Where is all that new energy to come from?

  4. The Hard Reality of Our Time

    Episode 807

    Show notes

John Walter recently shared an "inventory of possibilities" to Substack describing conditions, in five regions of the United States, where vulnerabilities and a convergence of failures might trigger a cascade of disaster in which existing conditions could be forced beyond their limits. The susceptible regions and concerns discussed are: Northeastern density, California's agriculture, Florida's sea level rise, the heat of the desert Southwest, and the seasonal demands of the industrial Midwest.

    Episode 805

    Show notes

This week, inspired by a recent post by journalist Andrew Lewin for The Daily Ocean Brief, we are discussing the "greenwashing phenomenon” and the investigation and prosecution of more than 400 companies worldwide that have been found fraudulent in their product claims, deliberate and disingenuous compromise of the Environmental Sustainability Standards (ESGs) intended to protect consumers. And we share details of a resultant new phenomenon, corporate “green-hushing”, where product sustainability claims are being dropped rather than facing the risks of litigation over claims companies cannot prove.

Eustacy is a word used to describe worldwide changes of sea level. This is a new word for us: even though it seems we live in a eustatic world. We're using this newly-discovered word to distill the five areas of our existence where the ocean matters most: fresh water, the ocean-fresh water continuum, energy, food, health, and exchange.

  13. Apprenticing

    Episode 1

    Show notes

Apprenticing has long been thought of as a term to describe someone working beside a master craftsperson to learn a trade and to refine a professional skill: whether it be pottery or electrical, cabinetry or plumbing. As an educational model it has long been mostly lost or forgotten, except in a place in midcoast Maine: The Apprenticeshop, where apprentices are learning the craft of building and restoring small traditional wooden boats and associated seamanship, in what can be argued as a most effective way of learning and living in a time when education is challenged by convention and complexity.
