John Legend Talks New Album "Muse" with Pharrell, Clipse, "Ordinary People," and Donald Trump Feud
Episode 1114
Show notes
The last time John Legend was in the studio was ten years ago. He and Chrissy had welcomed their first child just a few months earlier, and it was just a few weeks before the presidential election and we were collectively scoffing at the notion that Trump could win. A decade later, John and Chrissy are now parents of four, and Trump… well, we all know what happened there.
We jump straight back in to discuss his new album Muse, a cinematic collaboration with Pharrell Williams inspired by Nina Simone, a “black James Bond” vibe, and the complicated nature of love. John takes us inside their creative process in Paris — at the LVMH headquarters where Pharrell is creative director — the stories behind “Daylight,” “Under the Bridge,” and “Get Back.” Plus, the story behind his classic hit “Ordinary People,” his early days with Kanye West, playing on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” while still in college, and writing his first musical, Imitation of Life.
The EGOT winner also opens up about his complicated relationship with his mother, forgiveness, and how his childhood shaped the person he is today. We get into his lifelong commitment to activism, why speaking out against Trump has led to increased security, conspiracy theories, the upcoming midterms, and, of course, the infamous Twitter exchange between Chrissy Teigen and Donald Trump.

Busta Rhymes Talks Speed Rapping, "Look At Me Now," Janet Jackson, J Dilla and 'Dillagence II'
Episode 1113
Show notes
The myth, the legend, Busta Rhymes joins us for the first time to talk about his latest LP 'Dillagence II,' his deep connection with the late, great J. Dilla, and the responsibility of bringing Dilla's unreleased beats to life — for the second time. (This comes almost 10 years after the Dillagence mixtapes, released shortly after the producer’s untimely passing. Dilla is responsible for some of the most iconic cuts in hip-hop and soul, from Q-Tip to Erykah Badu, Common to the Roots, D’Angelo, Pharcyde, De La Soul, and on and on.)
Busta breaks down his creative process, why "Still Shining" took weeks to write, how his daughter Cie ended up on the record, and why he feels Dilla's presence in the music. We also take a trip through hip-hop history, from his early days as a founding member of Leaders of the New School, to how jumping on A Tribe Called Quest’s "Scenario" changed his life, to the making of "Woo Hah!!" and his iconic Hype Williams music videos. Plus, stories behind his collaborations with Janet Jackson, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, the Pussycat Dolls and Justin Bieber, the art of speed rapping, younger artists sampling his classics, and, of course, voicing Reptar in ‘Rugrats’!

The Japanese balls of energy join us to talk about how touring has made them stronger, both physically and mentally, and how their confidence has evolved after 11 years together. Episode 1106
Show notes
Hot on the heels of her hosting the ‘Let’s Marry Harry’ Reunion (woof - that was a car crash she navigated with aplomb!), Haley Baylee joins us to talk about her accidental path to becoming one of the internet’s biggest creators, from growing up with two mechanical engineer parents and wanting to become a doctor to pageants, modeling and eventually betting on herself following her divorce. She looks back at applying to a Sports Illustrated open call after being turned away by the only modeling agency in Minnesota, quitting modeling, and the 2022 Caleb Simpson apartment tour that first put her on millions of people’s feeds. She (diplomatically) explains what she really thinks of Harry Jowsey and whether dating and marriage shows can ever really be feminist. Eric Nam on The Traitors, New Album 'Confessions of a Lonely Heart,' & Avatar: The Last Airbender
Episode 1104
Show notes
Eric Nam is back! We haven't had the singer, songwriter, actor, entrepreneur, producer and podcasting powerhouse on the show since 2022 — although Zach is convinced it's been seven years. What is time anyway! Somehow Eric looks younger than ever, despite having approximately 17 different careers. From growing up in Atlanta and singing in choir to becoming a major star in South Korea, building DIVE Studios and making his way back into the American entertainment industry, Eric reflects on his unconventional career, the changing relationship between K-pop and Western pop, and the power of curiosity. He also talks about his fourth album, 'Confessions of a Lonely Heart,' how heartbreak and broken trust have influenced his music, and why loneliness doesn't necessarily mean being sad or unfulfilled.
Plus, Eric takes us behind the scenes of 'The Traitors,' including his initial reservations about joining the cast, getting stabbed in the back, AND secretly filming a music video with his fellow contestants. We also get into voicing Aang in 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' auditioning for Hollywood roles, his experiences with 'K-Pop: The Debut,' and executive producing DAYOUNG's solo album. Naturally, there's also talk of Scorpio nightmares, astrological compatibility, Asian glow, and whether Zach or Dan would survive a single episode of 'The Traitors.' Thoughts?

‘Coven Academy’ Cast on Love Triangles, On-Screen Kisses, Witches & Queer Vampire Energy
Episode 1097
Show notes
Things get a little witchy — and a lot chaotic — when the ‘Coven Academy’ stars Malina Pauli Weissman, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, and Louis Thresher hit the couch. The new supernatural series follows three teenage witches at an elite magic school in New Orleans, where they’re learning to control their powers while dealing with friendship, grief, dangerous secrets and, naturally, some very complicated crushes. Malina plays Briar, Jordan plays mind-reading Sasha, Ora plays time-bending Tegan, and Louis? Well he's struggling as the newly turned vampire Ollie. Also at the center of the story is Malachi Barton as warlock Jake — Ollie’s competition in a love triangle with Briar.
We talk about the very real chemistry that emerged during chemistry reads (even via Zoom), first on-screen kisses, who the cast ship in the Briar/Jake/Ollie love triangle, and finding pieces of themselves in their characters. Plus: anxiety and OCD, grief, the show’s take on witches and vampires (and vampires queer energy overall), their instant sisterhood, magical powers they’d absolutely abuse IRL, ‘Wednesday,’ ‘Cruella’ and ‘Saltburn’ homework, music, their ’90s-icon co-star Tiffani Thiessen — and trying to figure out exactly who is the guncle, younger cousin, wine aunt and older sister of this very loud found family.

Awsten Knight of Waterparks Talks Jinx, Video Games, DeuxMoi and Ghosts
Episode 1093
Show notes
Waterparks’ Awsten Knight is back on the show — at this point, we’ve genuinely lost count of how many times he’s been here — but this time he’s joining us to talk about the band’s new album 'JINX.'Three years in the making, Awsten breaks down the themes behind the record, from existential dread and losing father figures to talking to his inner child and why creativity, for him, is so rooted in that younger version of himself. He also gets into rebuilding the Waterparks team, taking their live shows back to more intimate rooms and collaborating with Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus thanks to an assist from Dillon Francis.
Predictably the conversation winds up unpredictable. Awsten talks skincare, scoring video games, why making 'JINX' was “better than therapy,” DeuxMoi making it onto the album and whether Austin is actually a good kisser.
