Utah: The Bear Lake Monster
Show notes
Deep beneath the turquoise waters of Bear Lake, a mysterious creature has reportedly lurked for more than 150 years. Stretching across the Utah–Idaho border, this beautiful mountain lake is home to one of America's oldest and most fascinating lake monster legends. But the terrifying encounters don't end at the shoreline. Beyond the water, Utah's rugged mountains hold their own secrets, including decades of chilling Sasquatch sightings.
The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip heads to Utah, where we investigate the legendary Bear Lake Monster and a collection of frightening Bigfoot encounters from across the Beehive State. Our journey begins in 1868, when Joseph C. Rich published sensational eyewitness accounts of an enormous serpent-like creature swimming through Bear Lake. Witnesses described a monster nearly 90 feet long, moving faster than a galloping horse.
The reports ignited a nationwide fascination, but in 1894, Rich admitted the original story was a fabrication. That should have ended the legend. Instead, reports of something unexplained in the lake continued for generations.
We explore a series of eerie accounts spanning more than a century, including a terrified wagon driver whose horses refused to approach the shoreline, a family watching an enormous dark shape cut through the water in 1974, fishermen witnessing bizarre disturbances during the winter cisco run, and a sailboat encounter involving a mysterious wake with no visible source.
We also examine tour boat operator Brian Hirschi's reported close encounter in 2002 and investigate possible explanations ranging from unusual wave activity to enormous fish and misidentified wildlife. Then we leave Bear Lake behind and venture deep into Utah's Sasquatch country, where the Bear River Range, Wasatch Mountains, and Uinta wilderness have produced some truly unsettling encounter stories.
A young sheepherder watches 1,500 frightened sheep bunch together as an enormous upright figure emerges from the trees. A teenager in North Ogden sees something massive moving along a fence line before it turns toward a floodlight. An elk hunter spots an unidentified creature stalking a herd through the remote Uintas. And a mountain biker encounters something standing just below a mountain road, close enough to see its hand resting against the pavement.
From a twelve-year-old girl's terrifying encounter on Boulder Mountain to an unexpected face-to-face sighting near Tony Grove Lake, these stories take us into some of Utah's most remote and beautiful wilderness. Is the Bear Lake Monster simply a pioneer-era hoax that evolved into enduring folklore?
And what explains the generations of reported Sasquatch encounters in Utah's mountains?
Join us for another journey into the unexplained as the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip explores the legends, eyewitness stories, and mysteries of Utah.

Texas: The Lake Worth Monster
Show notes
Fort Worth, Texas, July 1969. Six people parked in a car near Greer Island on Lake Worth drive to the police station at midnight and report that something came down out of a tree and landed on them, something with fur and scales and a face like a goat, and the next morning the Fort Worth Star-Telegram runs the headline that made the whole thing famous.
The night after that, a crowd of thirty or forty people watches the creature from the bottom of a bluff on the lake road until it throws a tire at them. For the rest of that summer the lake road filled up every night with teenagers, families, deputies, and men with deer rifles, while the newspaper that was covering it was also covering the moon landing.
On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip we leave the Nebraska Sandhills behind and come south into Texas for the Lake Worth Monster. We go through the documented record of July 1969, the Reichart sighting, Jack Harris and the tire on the bluff, the sixteen-inch tracks, the dead livestock, the police explanations, Sallie Ann Clarke’s book, Allen Plaster’s photograph, and the anonymous letter that showed up at the Fort Worth Nature Center in 2005.
Then we hear from people who were out there that summer. A sixteen-year-old girl in the back seat of an Impala who saw it leaning on a cottonwood. A young veteran with his grandfather’s rifle who caught it in a spotlight at the causeway. A newlywed couple fishing for catfish off a point south of the island. A fourteen-year-old boy who was close enough to the bluff to see its mouth.
From there we move east into the Trinity River bottoms, the Sabine, the Sam Houston National Forest, the Red River, and Caddo Lake for a run of Texas Sasquatch encounters, a game warden watching something dig for mussels across an oxbow, a nine-year-old on a screened porch watching something work her grandfather’s trotline, a dozer operator with something standing on his slash pile, a rancher whose horse wouldn’t move, and a kid in a kayak lost in the cypress at night.
Greer Island is a hiking trail inside the Fort Worth Nature Center now, and the bluff has a subdivision on top of it, and people still call the Nature Center every year or two about something they saw along the water.

Dogman Encounters From The Mailbag
Show notes
This week on Backwoods Bigfoot Stories, we're taking a break from the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip to open the listener mailbag—and this time, it's not Bigfoot lurking in the darkness. Six listeners. Six states. Six terrifying encounters with something that shouldn't exist. From the cornfields of Iowa to the remote hills of the Missouri Ozarks, listeners share chilling firsthand accounts of a mysterious, upright, wolf-like creature commonly known as the Dogman.
Standing on two legs, possessing unnatural speed and strength, and displaying disturbingly human characteristics, these creatures left witnesses with experiences they still struggle to explain.
In Iowa, a farmer harvesting corn after midnight encounters a towering, dog-headed figure pacing his combine through the fields. In Michigan, a woman walking her beagle discovers something monstrous lurking beneath a suburban streetlight.
On a deserted Kentucky back road, three teenagers come face-to-face with a creature so enormous it towers over their vehicle. A Pennsylvania bowhunter finds himself trapped high in a tree stand as something begins climbing toward him.
In Wisconsin, a woman driving home from work is pursued by a creature capable of keeping pace with her truck at seventy miles per hour.
And deep in the Missouri Ozarks, a man recalls a terrifying childhood encounter involving his grandfather, missing livestock, and a mysterious predator that changed their family farm forever.
But what makes these Dogman sightings especially unsettling isn't just what the witnesses claim to have seen. It's what they say was left behind: deep claw marks, damaged steel, unexplained hair, and physical traces of encounters they can never forget.
Are these sightings evidence of an undiscovered predator, misidentified wildlife, or something far stranger hiding in America's forests and rural communities?
Turn down the lights, settle in, and prepare for six unforgettable Dogman encounter stories that will make you think twice about what might be watching from the darkness.
If you enjoy terrifying cryptid encounters, eyewitness Dogman sightings, Sasquatch stories, mysterious creatures, and unexplained wilderness encounters, subscribe to Backwoods Bigfoot Stories for more chilling tales from the places where the pavement ends and the unknown begins.

Tennessee: The Wild Man
Show notes
Deep in the mountains and hollows of Tennessee, something terrifying has stalked the forests for generations. From the rugged Cumberland Plateau to the shadowy foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, witnesses have described a massive, hair-covered creature known as the Tennessee Wildman—a mysterious figure whose legend stretches back to newspaper reports from the 1870s.
In this chilling installment of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian explores more than a century of Tennessee Wildman history, folklore, and frightening encounters. Two veteran hunters spot a towering figure outside a secluded rock shelter. A young couple camping along the Big South Fork discovers enormous footprints before coming face-to-face with something watching from across a creek.
A lone hunter awakens to a terrifying face staring through his cabin window. Deep in the Smokies, experienced hunting dogs abandon a trail in fear. And inside a remote McNairy County cave, a farmer carrying a lantern discovers something unimaginable waiting in the darkness.
Along the way, Brian investigates the historical accounts that helped create the Tennessee Wildman legend, including the mysterious Wild Man of Chilhowee, strange baboon-like creatures reported near South Pittsburg in 1934, and the infamous 1976 Flintville Monster sightings, which reportedly sent armed residents searching the forests of Lincoln County.
From forgotten newspaper reports to terrifying backwoods encounters, this episode explores one disturbing possibility: Has something been hiding in Tennessee's mountains, caves, and forests for more than 150 years?
Turn down the lights and join us for another unforgettable journey into the unknown on Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.

South Dakota: Walking Sam & Bigfoot
Show notes
On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian heads into South Dakota, where stories of a towering, faceless figure follow the roads through Pine Ridge and Rosebud after dark. He’s described as thin, seven feet tall or more, and sometimes wearing a hat. His name is Walking Sam.
Brian follows accounts of a grandmother who spotted an enormous figure beyond her fence, a teenager who encountered a stranger silhouetted against the stars, and a mother who heard something breathing outside her trailer for four consecutive nights. Other stories tell of children dreaming about the same tall visitor—and an elder who remembered the Tall Man decades before Walking Sam made headlines.
Along the way, Brian explores the Lakota traditions discussed in these accounts, their parallels with shadow people and the Hat Man, and the attention Walking Sam received during Pine Ridge’s 2015 youth suicide crisis.
Then the road turns toward the Black Hills and South Dakota’s river country, where accounts of a different presence emerge: the hairy giant known as the Big Man. From the 1977 Little Eagle sighting reports to encounters involving loggers, ranchers, backpackers, and a tribal game warden, these stories describe rocks moving above a remote campsite, a massive figure watching a newborn calf, footsteps circling a tent, and tracks disappearing into the White River.
It’s a journey through roadside legends, wilderness encounters, and the stories people carry long after they get home. And when we return to Highway 18, the porch lights are still on.

Something Else In The Woods
Show notes
Most encounters on Backwoods Bigfoot Stories involve something tall, hairy, and walking on two legs. This week, five listeners describe something else: unexplained lights, unfamiliar figures, and ordinary trips into the backcountry that took a disturbing turn.
In Idaho’s Selway backcountry, an elk hunter alone at a spike camp watches a glowing object descend over a creek. Then he discovers a tall, faceless figure standing across his campfire. When he wakes, his rifle has been unloaded, and the cartridges are standing in a neat row on a log.
On a Louisiana bayou in 1961, a trapper running trotlines by lantern hears every frog fall silent at once. The water begins pulling his pirogue toward three small figures in the shallows, one holding its hand flat against the surface.
At the end of an Oregon logging spur, two stream surveyors wake inside their company truck to a hum that makes their teeth ache. One of them gets out and starts walking toward an orange light above the alders, his face strangely blank. On an Ozark river float, three teenage boys and a dog watch the pool beneath a bluff glow green from the bottom.
Then something stands up in the shallows. And in interior Alaska, a woman running a trapline alone has her snowmachine die in the middle of a frozen lake. A flat black disc sits on the ice at the far end. Three figures begin walking toward her, crossing the snow without sinking.
Same woods as always. Something else in them.

South Carolina: Scape Ore Swamp & Bigfoot
Show notes
The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip heads deep into the South Carolina Lowcountry, where a terrifying encounter on a lonely stretch of road sparked one of the strangest cryptid mysteries in American history. On June 29, 1988, seventeen-year-old Christopher Davis was changing a flat tire near Scape Ore Swamp outside Bishopville, South Carolina, when he claimed a horrifying seven-foot-tall, green-skinned creature with three fingers emerged from the darkness and charged straight at him.
Davis barely escaped into his car, but according to his account, the creature grabbed his door, climbed onto the roof, and attacked the vehicle as he sped down Browntown Road. Within weeks, reports of the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp had exploded into a nationwide sensation. Mysterious three-toed footprints, damaged vehicles, eyewitness accounts, a million-dollar reward, and national television coverage turned the quiet community into the center of a cryptid frenzy.
But was something truly lurking in the blackwater swamp, or had an entire town been caught up in an elaborate hoax? We investigate the original 1988 encounters, the sheriff who stood behind Christopher Davis, the controversial evidence, and the mysterious sightings that continued for decades. Then we venture beyond the headlines into the darker, lesser-known stories from people who claimed to encounter something terrifying around Scape Ore Swamp.
A truck driver confronts a towering figure on a deserted bridge. A farmer's daughter discovers something stalking the tobacco barns. Two cousins find themselves trapped in a silent swamp, and a school bus driver experiences something that one terrified child will never forget. But South Carolina's unexplained encounters don't end with the Lizard Man.
Our journey continues into the remote forests, river bottoms, and isolated wilderness of the Palmetto State, where witnesses describe something entirely different: massive, hair-covered, humanlike creatures believed to be Sasquatch. From the ancient swamps of Congaree and the dense forests of Francis Marion to the Great Pee Dee River, Sumter National Forest, and the secluded shores of Lake Jocassee, we explore chilling Bigfoot encounter stories from across South Carolina.
One state. Two terrifying mysteries. Countless miles of dark wilderness.

Bigfoot Comes To Visit
Show notes
We’re pulling off the road trip for a pit stop this week, because the inbox filled back up and these five emails belong together. Nobody in them went looking for anything. They were at home, asleep or working or out checking stock, and something walked up to where they live and kept coming back.
Oleta was the overnight donut maker at a shop in Pinetop, Arizona, in two thousand three, which meant she went to bed at six in the evening and slept beside an upstairs window she kept cracked for air. The bottom of that window sat more than seven feet off the hillside behind the cabin, and on two nights that June something stood outside it and looked in.
Lavelle was eleven years old in October of nineteen seventy-six, living in a house on brick piers in Franklin County, Mississippi, with a swept sand yard and a pear tree out back. For eleven nights in a row something heavy walked laps around that house with one hand dragging along the clapboards, and on the ninth night his daddy sat out front in the truck to wait for it.
Orrin is a taxidermist outside Crystal Falls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and in the fall of twenty eleven something started raking the salt off the deer hides behind his shop. His twelve-year-old son was the one who worked out the timing. It only came on mornings his mother left to run her mail route, about twenty minutes after she pulled out of the driveway.
Leander tunes pianos for a living, and in the summer of nineteen ninety-four he had a gutted church upright sitting under a tarp on the side porch of his farmhouse in Estill County, Kentucky. First the porch glider got moved. Then, at two in the morning, somebody started plucking one low string, over and over.
Vesta ran a cow-calf outfit in Idaho County, Idaho, and her late husband had built a gate latch that took two hands, a shoulder and a knee to open.
In the spring of nineteen eighty-five she kept finding that gate swung wide open with sixty pairs of cattle bunched in the far corner of the pasture, so one evening she parked the stock truck in the lane and watched to see who was opening it.
If something has ever come up on your porch, looked in your window, or let itself into your pasture, send it to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com.
Next time we’re back on the road.

Rhode Island: Bigfoot & Vampires
Show notes
This stop on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip pulls into Exeter, Rhode Island, where on the seventeenth of March in eighteen ninety-two a group of farmers opened the graves of three women from the same family and burned the heart of the youngest one on a rock behind the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.
Her name was Mercy Lena Brown, she was nineteen years old, and she'd been dead for two months. Her neighbors believed she was feeding on her dying brother from the grave. The ashes of her heart were mixed into water and given to him to drink.
Brian tells the story of the Brown family from the beginning, starting with the death of Mary Eliza Brown in eighteen eighty-three and following consumption through the house as it took her daughter Mary Olive, then Lena, then Edwin.
Along the way the episode covers the wider New England vampire panic, the century of tuberculosis outbreaks that drove it, and the earlier Rhode Island cases that Exeter already knew by heart, including Stephen Staples and his petition to the Cumberland town council in seventeen ninety-six, the dream of Stukeley Tillinghast and his dying orchard, Nancy Young of Foster, the Rose family of Peace Dale, the Ray brothers of Jewett City, and the Connecticut farmer whose coffin was marked J B fifty-five.
The episode also follows the story out of Exeter and into the Providence Journal, the papers of Bram Stoker, the fiction of H. P. Lovecraft, and the research of folklorist Michael Bell. The cemetery has its own encounters. A teenager with a dying flashlight finds a girl standing over a headstone in nineteen seventy-nine. A groundskeeper's daughter watches a blue light travel along the back wall in nineteen fifty-seven. And a woman caring for her father in his last week walks into his bedroom at three in the morning and finds somebody sitting in the chair beside his bed.
Then the road turns west. Ten Rod Road runs from the cemetery straight into the Arcadia Management Area, fourteen thousand acres of forest grown up over the same farms that emptied out in Mercy Brown's lifetime, and it's the same road where the best-known Bigfoot video in Rhode Island was filmed. From there the episode moves through the state's Sasquatch encounters. A duck hunter on Worden Pond watches something pale wade across a frozen cove.
A forestry worker sees a figure step over a stone wall during the gypsy moth summer of nineteen eighty-one. A beagle man at Big River has his whole pack go silent at once. A firewood cutter in Burrillville turns around to find something at his woodpile holding a piece of his oak.
And a rider at Escoheag sits on a mare that won't take another step.If you've got a sighting, a story, or a stop you want added to the map, you can reach Brian at brian@paranormalworldproductions.com.

Strange Bigfoot Encounters
Show notes
The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip pulls off the highway for a pit stop this week so Brian can open the mailbag. Most of the encounters that land in the inbox are straightforward: somebody sees something big and hairy walking on two legs, and it walks away. The five in this episode didn't go that way. In each of them, seeing a giant ape that isn't supposed to exist was only part of what happened.
Casimir was a railroad signal maintainer called out after midnight in October 1993 to a siding in the northern Minnesota bog country. On the way in he watched 3 pale lights travel north over the tamaracks, and 25 minutes later something came walking down the middle of the track toward his floodlights, stepping on every third tie.
Odalys was running the instrument on a Florida survey crew in February 2008 when she followed a red-brown, mud-caked animal across an open cattle pasture through a 30-power telescope. She watched it walk behind a lone cabbage palm with a trunk 14 inches thick and never come out the other side.
Linnea was calling spotted owls from a log landing in California's Klamath Mountains in June 1997. Her data sheet shows a start time of 9:42 PM for station six and nothing after it, and the next thing she remembers is sitting on her tailgate at 1:51 AM with her boots full of water.
Verlene was alone in a Colorado elk camp in October 1986, 9 miles from the nearest road, when she heard what sounded like two people talking down at the creek and walked to the edge of the bench with a shotgun to see who was there.
And Rosalind writes on behalf of her late father, Evander, a pipeline patrol pilot who flew past something black and upright on a bare wheat stubble hill in eastern Washington in August 1974. He banked around for a second look and found the hill empty 15 seconds later.
There are no verdicts here and no explanations, only what five people saw and what happened around it that they've never been able to account for.

Pennsylvania: The Squonk & Bigfoot
Show notes
The next stop on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip is Pennsylvania, home of the most miserable monster in American folklore. The squonk comes out of the state's old lumber camps, where woodhicks and bark peelers told of a small, wart-covered animal with skin that didn't fit, so ashamed of its own looks that it hid in the hemlocks and cried all night. It reached print in 1910 in William T. Cox's Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, along with the story of J. P. Wentling, a forester near Mont Alto who lured one into a sack and got home to find nothing inside but tears and bubbles.
This episode covers the logging era that gave rise to the legend, from the Williamsport boom and the hemlock bark trade to life in the camps and the real dangers of the deep woods. It then follows the crying through the years in accounts from a Potter County bark camp in 1898, a Civilian Conservation Corps trail crew in 1934, a dairy farm springhouse in 1952, a deer camp above Pine Creek in 1967, a trout stream in the Loyalsock State Forest in 1979, and a gas well pad in Tioga County in 2011.
From the squonk, the trip moves on to Pennsylvania's long history with Bigfoot, starting with an 1830s account from Susquehanna County, an 1897 newspaper report from Potter County, the 1973 wave of sightings Stan Gordon investigated along Chestnut Ridge, and the 2007 trail camera photos from the Allegheny National Forest.
The encounters that follow take place on a strip mine haul road, a school bus route through the national forest, a maple sugarbush in Somerset County, a bow hunter's tree stand, a late-night wrecker call in elk country, and the Pine Creek Rail Trail.

The Bigfoot Mailbag
Show notes
The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip pulls off the highway this week for a pit stop, and Brian opens the mailbag. These are five Sasquatch encounters sent in by listeners, covering 66 years and five states, and two of them were handed down inside a family before they ever reached the show.
Cordell was 260 feet up a cell tower on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee in October 2019, alone, when something walked out of the woods and into the compound below him. It stood beside his truck, took hold of his load line, and followed the rope up with its eyes until it found him.
Philippa writes in with the story her father Emmett told for 40 years. In November 1964 he was hauling milk cans on a hill farm route in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom when his headlights caught something lifting a full 10-gallon can off a farmer's stand and carrying it up the pasture under one arm. The creamery docked him $11.40 for the can, and he never got over it.
Marit was first out to the back beds on a Wisconsin cranberry marsh in October 1996 and found it standing in the flooded bed at daylight, scooping up berries with both hands. Her boss looked at the tracks on the dike and reached for a rake.
Wrenna shares her grandmother Opal's diary from the summer of 1953, when Opal was a Forest Service fire lookout in the Yaak country of northwest Montana. For 11 days she took a compass bearing on something that crossed the same rock slide every evening. Then one night it didn't cross, and she heard her woodpile move.
Ansel was 22 and picking oysters by lantern on Willapa Bay, Washington, in January 1982, with the tide out and no way off the bed for hours, when something came across the mud flats from Long Island, squatted 80 yards from the crew, and watched them work.

Oregon: Bigfoot & Colossal Claude
Show notes
In March of 1934, the crew of the lightship Columbia and the supply tender Rose watched something come up out of the water near the mouth of the Columbia River. The men said it was about 40 feet long with an 8-foot neck, and the tender's captain told the Salem Capital Journal it opened its mouth and gaped at the lightship. The crew wanted to lower a boat and go after it, and the officers told them no.
Oregon would eventually give it a name, Colossal Claude.
On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian heads to the Oregon coast and the Columbia River Bar, the stretch of water sailors call the Graveyard of the Pacific.
The episode follows the sea serpent through the newspaper record, from the 1934 lightship sighting to Captain Charles Graham of the troller Viv in 1937, the couple who chased a 55-foot animal down the coast highway from Devil's Churn to Heceta Head, and Captain Chris Anderson of the halibut schooner Argo, who said in 1939 that it passed within 10 feet of his boat and ate a 20-pound halibut off his line.
Along the way there's the crowd of more than 30 people at Nelscott, the 1,000-pound carcass called Old Hairy that washed up at Delake in 1950, and Marvin the Monster, filmed by Shell Oil cameras in 1963.You'll also hear from the people who never called a reporter: a salmon troller crossing the bar in 1951, an assistant keeper on Tillamook Rock, a family at the Neahkahnie Mountain viewpoint, a crabber off Clatsop Spit who had something follow his boat for 40 minutes, and a fisherman on the South Jetty in 2012.Then the road turns inland.
Nearly half of Oregon is forest, and the reports of something upright in that timber go back to the wild man of the Sixes mining district in 1904.
Brian covers the 1971 sightings at The Dalles, where a music teacher put a rifle scope on a creature in his headlights and couldn't pull the trigger, along with Peter Byrne's Bigfoot Information Center and the Bigfoot trap that still stands in the Siskiyous.
The episode closes with Sasquatch encounters from the Tillamook State Forest, the Clackamas River, the North Umpqua, Olallie Lake and Bear Camp Road.

Oklahoma: The Octopus & Bigfoot
Show notes
Every lake in this episode was somebody's pasture once. On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian King-Sharp drives into Oklahoma, where the three lakes said to hide the Oklahoma Octopus were all built by the government inside living memory.
Lake Tenkiller, Lake Thunderbird, and Oologah Lake are reservoirs, not natural water, and under every one of them are drowned roads, standing timber, fence lines, and the foundations of houses that were dry ground three generations ago. That's the ground this legend grew on, and it's why this is a don't-swim-after-dark episode.
The stories start on the Fourth of July, 1978, with a seventeen-year-old girl floating on her back off a houseboat on Tenkiller when something wraps her leg from ankle to knee and pulls her under. From there the episode follows a bass fisherman in the drowned timber at Thunderbird who watched an arm feel its way around a dead oak, a scuba diver who cut himself loose from something in the old river channel at thirty-five feet and came up with sucker marks pressed into his wetsuit, and a farm kid on Oologah who saw two arms come over the tops of his family's flooded fence posts and pull the wire down.
Between the encounters, Brian traces the real paper trail behind the legend, which is thinner and stranger than the television version. It starts with a June 2, 1982 item in the Daily Oklahoman about two boys and a dead saltwater octopus found in the Verdigris River near Lock and Dam 18 on the barge canal, runs through a 1987 article by Kiowa writer Russell Bates about a horse-sized, reddish-brown creature said to drag people into sandstone caverns, and picks up again in 2007 with two cryptid books that named the three lakes without citing a source, a reporter at the Oklahoma Gazette who found that no park manager or diver on those lakes had ever heard of the thing, and Loren Coleman's guess that it all began with a planted carcass.
Then in January 2009 Animal Planet's Lost Tapes turned it into a monster with a name. Along the way the episode looks at why man-made lakes breed this kind of story, from the cold water sitting in the old channel to the drownings that happen every summer in water nobody can see into.
The second half leaves the water for the timber. It begins with the Noxie Monster of September 1975, when farmer Kenneth Tosh, Sheriff Robert Donald, researcher Hayden Hewes, and two dozen witnesses in Nowata County put a seven-foot hairy creature on the wire services and a Tulsa Tribune artist's drawing in front of the whole country.
Then come the encounters that never made a newspaper: a noodler chest-deep in the Verdigris below Oologah dam watching something on the gravel bar bite the head off a fish, a deer hunter above a spring in the Kiamichi Mountains a few miles from where the Honobia Bigfoot Festival now stands, a nurse stopped on Highway 82 in the Cookson Hills above Tenkiller at 12:14 in the morning with a gray figure shading its eyes from her headlights, and a woman on a rock at Clear Bay on Lake Thunderbird who watched something wade out of the blackjack oak at dusk and come back with a fish held against its chest.
The episode also covers the Siege at Honobia in 2000, the founding of the Honobia Bigfoot Festival in 2005, and how a valley in the Choctaw Nation turned its stories into college scholarships.

Six Stories From The Mailbag
Show notes
This week, Backwoods Bigfoot Stories pulls off the road for a special listener mailbag episode. The Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip is taking a brief pause while Brian opens the inbox and shares six disturbing encounters sent in from six different states—each from someone who spent years wondering whether anyone would believe what they saw.
In the Washington Cascades, Nathan and his cousin Pete watch something enormous cross a clearcut on two legs in October 2015. Two nights later, it appears again at the edge of their firelight. But what they discover while driving out of the mountains is enough to make one of them swear off the woods for good.
In Michigan, Kelsey finishes a late bar shift in January 2022 and begins an eighteen-mile drive through state forest. Something running upright keeps pace with her truck along the tree line at nearly fifty miles an hour. She thinks she finally loses it—until she reaches home and sees something waiting near her mailbox.
In northern Maine, veteran trapper Ray is checking a brook he has worked for thirty years when he hears his wife calling his name from downstream. The problem is that she is twenty miles away. Then Ray sees what is standing in the alders—and realizes its mouth never moves when it speaks.
In North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest, Trisha encounters what at first appears to be a deer. Then it looks directly at her with both eyes, begins moving in ways no deer should, and eventually rises onto its hind legs miles deeper into the trail.
In south Georgia, Marcus is sitting in a ladder stand when he spots a pale, hairless figure hanging by its arms from a longleaf pine forty yards away. Moments later, it begins moving through the canopy without ever touching the ground.
And along Idaho’s Lochsa River, Jeff drives Highway 12 late at night and passes the same walking figure on the shoulder six separate times. Each time it appears closer to the road. His dash cam should have captured everything—but when he reviews the footage, the highway is empty.

Ohio: Bigfoot & The Loveland Frog
Show notes
This week, the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip rolls into Loveland, Ohio, a quiet river town northeast of Cincinnati with one of the strangest creature legends in America.
In March 1972, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey was patrolling an icy stretch of Riverside Drive near the old Totes factory when he spotted something crouched in the road. According to his account, the creature stood upright, looked directly at him, and moved over the guardrail toward the Little Miami River.
Two weeks later, fellow officer Mark Matthews reported his own encounter on the same road and fired his revolver at what he saw. Decades later, Matthews would publicly offer a very different explanation for that night. But the Loveland Frog story may go back even further. The episode revisits a 1955 account recorded by investigator Leonard Stringfield, in which witness Robert Hunnicutt described three strange gray figures near a bridge, including one allegedly holding a wand-like object that gave off sparks.
Then, in 2016, a photograph taken during the Pokémon Go craze pushed the Loveland Frog back into the national spotlight and once again raised the question of what people have really been seeing along the river.
Brian also digs into lesser-known local reports involving a canoe livery, a late-night drive home, and a catfishing spot near Nisbet Park before heading east into the hills of Appalachian Ohio.
From there, the road leads into some of the state’s best-known Bigfoot country, including the 1978 Minerva Monster case, as well as reported Grassman encounters from East Fork, Vinton County, Wayne National Forest, Salt Fork State Park, Noble County, Shawnee State Forest, and Zaleski State Forest.
From frogmen along the Little Miami to massive hairy figures in the Appalachian foothills, Ohio proves to be one of the strangest stops yet on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip.

Bigfoot Encounters Mailbag
Show notes
This week, the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip leaves the highway behind and opens the mailbag for five listener encounters that have lingered for years—sometimes decades—after they happened. In Aroostook County, Maine, a seventeen-year-old working the 1959 potato harvest walks alone to the bottom of a frost-covered field and realizes something is already waiting in her row, crouched among the potatoes and feeding.
In the darkness of West Virginia’s New River Gorge, a railroad track inspector responds to a tripped slide fence and finds himself standing beside the rails as a ninety-four-car coal train roars past. On the other side of the tracks, something is standing there watching him. Before dawn in New Mexico’s Gila country, a wrangler rides into a frozen meadow to gather the camp horses.
Then something rises out of the frost directly in front of her. Deep inside the Boundary Waters, two college students watch a strange figure swim across a channel at dusk, crawl onto the far shore, and shake the water from its body like an animal. Hours later, with darkness surrounding their campsite, rocks begin splashing into the water nearby.
And in the tangled wilderness of the Big Thicket of East Texas, a man mowing a remote pipeline right-of-way stops his tractor when two figures step into the clearing ahead of him.
One of them is carrying the other on its back.
Five witnesses. Five places. Five encounters with things that should not have been there.

North Dakota: Miniwashitu & Bigfoot
Show notes
On this stop of the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, Brian heads into North Dakota and follows the Missouri River in search of one of the strangest creatures ever recorded in the folklore of the northern plains: the Miniwashitu.
More than a century ago, ethnologist Melvin Randolph Gilmore wrote of a mysterious being said to live beneath the Missouri. Covered in red hair like a buffalo, with a single eye, one horn, and a jagged backbone resembling the teeth of an enormous saw, the Miniwashitu was believed to swim upstream each spring as the river broke apart.
Witnesses were said to hear its terrible roar, see a strange redness trailing through the water, and know better than to look directly at it in daylight.According to the story Gilmore preserved, the last man who did was struck blind, lost his reason, and died soon afterward.
From that chilling piece of recorded folklore, Brian travels the Missouri and the reservoirs connected to it through five unsettling accounts involving something moving upstream beneath breaking ice. A nine-year-old girl watches a saw-toothed back rise from the river north of Washburn. A worker below Garrison Dam sees an enormous red-haired form tear through an ice jam. Teenagers on Standing Rock watch a red glow moving beneath frozen Lake Oahe. Kayakers encounter something impossibly large fighting the Missouri's current.
And an ice fisherman feels the frozen lake rise beneath his feet before hearing a roar coming through the ice. Then the episode leaves the water behind.North Dakota may be known for open prairie, but its river bottoms, wooded valleys, badlands, and scattered forests have produced another kind of report.
Brian heads into the Turtle Mountains, Pembina Gorge, Missouri River bottoms, Killdeer Mountains, and Sheyenne Valley for five accounts of enormous upright, hair-covered figures seen by hunters, riders, ranch hands, and families.
Along the way, Brian also reflects on the unexplained things he's encountered on his own property in the Appalachian woods—footprints, strange nighttime vocalizations, bent saplings, tree structures, and rock stacks—and why stories from people who encounter something impossible in familiar country hit differently once you've experienced something you can't easily explain yourself.
From something roaring beneath the Missouri River ice to massive figures watching from the timber, North Dakota may be one of the most unexpected—and unsettling—stops on the entire road trip.

North Carolina: Bigfoot & The Beast
Show notes
This stop on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip brings the journey home to North Carolina.
Brian and Dani have spent the last six years living on forty wooded acres in the foothills, and this episode begins on their own porch before traveling across the state and back to the winter of 1953–1954, when the small town of Bladenborowas gripped by fear.
Something was killing dogs.Using newspaper coverage from Wilmington, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Lumberton, Brian follows the story night by night: dogs found dead with almost no blood left in their bodies, terrified hounds refusing to follow the trail, eyewitness reports of a strange catlike creature, and the massive armed hunt that sent hundreds of people into the surrounding bay swamps searching for what the press had already dubbed the Beast of Bladenboro.
The episode also explores the theories that followed—from wolves and catamounts to bobcats and a mysterious dog called Big Boy—along with three chilling encounter accounts from the height of the panic. Then the story shifts from the Beast of Bladenboro to something even larger moving through the North Carolina woods.
Brian shares experiences from his own property before diving into Bigfoot encounters from Bladen Lakes, Badin Lake and the Uwharries, the South Mountains, Big Laurel, the Croatan National Forest, Wilkes County, Roan Mountain, and McDowell County.
From hounds hiding beneath a truck to towering figures seen beside roads, creeks, pastures, and mountain balds, this episode explores two of North Carolina’s most enduring mysteries: the creature that terrorized Bladenboro and the upright figures still reported across the state today.
Bladenboro still celebrates its strange history with Beast Fest every fall, but more than seventy years later, nobody can say for certain what was really stalking those streets.

Bigfoot & The Wild Tales of Appalachia
Show notes
Tonight Backwoods Bigfoot Stories takes a break from the Cryptid Road Trip and heads home to the Appalachian Mountains for a night of old-fashioned mountain storytelling.
Brian begins with the warnings and superstitions passed down through generations: three knocks in the night, covered mirrors, strange sounds outside the house, and the belief that the dogs often know something is there long before we do.
Along the way, he separates genuine Appalachian traditions from the modern versions that have taken on a life of their own online. From there, the episode ventures into the darker corners of mountain folklore—haints, witches, the Wampus Cat, mysterious black panthers that people continue to report despite official skepticism, and the Not-Deer, a remarkably young legend that offers a rare look at folklore being created in real time.
Then the trail leads toward something much larger. Brian digs into nineteenth-century accounts of Appalachian “wild men,” the famous Daniel Boone Yahoo story and its origins, and an 1877 newspaper report describing a strange wild man roaming Globe Valley near Blowing Rock, North Carolina. From the old mountain meaning of “booger” to Virginia’s Woodbooger and North Carolina’s legendary Knobby, the stories begin to sound increasingly familiar.
The second half of the episode belongs to the encounters. From the remote backcountry of the Great Smoky Mountains to frightening road crossings across five states, hunters who watched enormous figures moving through the timber, terrified dogs, strange activity in the mountains of north Georgia, and unsettling reports from the hollows of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky, the same description keeps appearing again and again.
Different generations gave it different names: Wild Man. Yahoo. Booger. Woodbooger. Knobby. Today, most of us would simply call it Bigfoot.
Have Appalachian families been describing the same creature all along?
And one final, quiet encounter from a back porch in Johnson County, Tennessee, may leave you wondering just how old these stories really are.
