  1. Heart Centered Connections and Neurodivergence in Children with Dr. Niki Elliott

    Season 32, Episode 5

    Show notes

Lady! This week, Dr. Dom and Terri expand this year’s theme of community into the members of our community that may be on the margins. Dr. Niki Elliott, a clinical professor and director of the Center for Embodied Equity and Neurodiversity at the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences and author of Heart-Centered Connections: Seven Essential Skills for Helping Neurodiverse and Marginalized Children Thrive, joins the podcast to discuss the importance of making space for those who are different than us – especially the children in our community.

Loving and caring for children living with neurodivergence requires a level of intentionality and self-awareness that is only now becoming mainstream. Some of the skills needed will call for the parents, caregiver, and community member to dig deep into themselves and address their unmet needs so that they can get out of the way and put the needs of the child first.

Dr. Niki provides a holistic approach to supporting children with neurodivergence needs and the first step is by offering compassion, not only to the child but also to the caregiver. Lady, you’ll want to tune in for actionable strategies you can begin to incorporate today that will shift your perspective in how you show up for the neurodivergent young people in your life…and, maybe even yourself too! Dr. Niki shares why helping young people train their nervous systems for resilience can help them navigate the world more skillfully.

It wasn’t all business this episode! Head over to Patreon for a special Oh You Blatchet! segment with Dr. Niki. She’s spilling the tea about her business and having fun doing so! We’ll catch you there!

  11. 10 Reminders for When Adulting Gets Ghetto | TBT

    Season 27, Episode 2

    Show notes

Lady! We know that not only are we living in interesting, unprecedented times but we’re also just living our regular lives and sometimes life be lifin’. Life is beautiful, abundant, and generous but it can also be raggedy, harsh, and tough. As much as we love being a part of the toolkit that helps keep you uplifted, you know that we always keep it real. That’s why in this week's throwback, Dr. Dom and Terri offer their grounded perspective about how to handle life when life is being a hot, ghetto mess.

Adulting is often fun and wonderful. There are days as an adult when ice cream for breakfast is a thing because you’re grown. But, for the days when the laundry is piling up, the bills are due, the internal monologue is putting you through the ringer, the deep pain within is spilling out, you’re sick, or you’re just tired it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and like you’re getting it all wrong.

Fear not, Terri and Dr. Dom offer ten truth bombs to help you keep everything in perspective as you get up and figure it out – like you always do! Adulting is often described as a series of responsibilities and actions that one takes to be a functioning member of society. But, this week Dr. Dom and Terri remind you that often adulting is finding the tools to complete those mundane tasks to satisfaction when life doesn’t feel good.

So, grab your Cultivating H.E.R. Space latte mug (find it and more in the Cultivating H.E.R. Space shop), fill it with your favorite cozy beverage, and allow this episode to be the warm hug, kiss on the cheek, or pat on the back for getting through the patches when life feels hard. Lady, no matter what’s going on keep your chin up and remember that we’re rooting for you!

10 Things to Remember When Adulting Gets Ghetto
    1. Crying doesn’t mean you’re losing — It means you’re releasing
    2. You’re not weak — you’re carrying a lot right now
    3. Just because you’re alone doesn’t mean you’re not supported
    4. It’s okay to miss people who are no longer in your life
    5. Your ancestors would be so proud of you
    6. It’s normal to grieve the life you thought you’d have by now
    7. You are always worthy of love, even when you think you're a mess
    8. You’re allowed to rest, even If nothing’s done
    9. Your dream isn’t too big — It’s just being built on divine timing
    10. Everything is going to be okay — even if it doesn’t look like it yet

    Quote of the Day:
"Adulting is realizing that you have to take charge of your life, even when it's hard."

  12. Awkward vs. Misunderstood – Why First Impressions Aren’t Always Right

    Season 31, Episode 13

    Show notes

Hey lady! Have you ever been accused of being stuck-up, shy, rude, or flat-out a b*tch and you were simply existing? Other people’s projections land on you and suddenly you have a reputation for being anti-social or awkward while anxiety is beating your butt and you’re doing your best not to show it. Or, maybe you’re the one pre-emptively judging someone for their demeanor, creating stories about why they are behaving they way they are without pausing and finding a neutral space from which to observe the interaction.

This week, Dr. Dom and Terri show some love to the socially selective, the socially anxious, and the downright awkward among us so that we can understand these relational dynamics and hopefully offer more compassion to ourselves and others. Why? Because we’re all doing life for the first time and we do not all have the answers but we can make the effort to help each other along the way.

Have you noticed that certain situations trigger fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses from you? Dr. Dom offers an actionable toolkit to help you navigate those scenarios so you can enter spaces skillfully. And, Terri offers perspective about how you can give yourself grace because it is quite possible that you are reading the room accurately and acting perfectly appropriately even if other people misunderstand your behavior.

Terri and Dr. Dom share their real-world experiences and how they’ve been able to adapt to situations while also identifying when they’ve personalized a situation without enough data or proper context. Lady, doing that can cause unforced errors in an otherwise fruitful potential relationship, so do yourself a favor, head over to the Cultivating H.E.R. Space shop, grab your journal and spend some time with the reflection questions offered in this episode.

Lady, life is all about relationships so let’s expand our capacity to be in sisterhood by increasing our confidence and our understanding of our differences. We’re shaping this world into a beautiful one full of genuine authenticity!

  14. Do Healthy Relationships Have to Look Traditional?

    Season 31, Episode 12

    Show notes

Lady! Are you in the mood for love but feeling allergic to shared finances, living together, and faking the funk of marital bliss? Don’t worry lady, this isn’t an episode for the lovestung cynics, it’s an ode to the changing nature of romantic relationships.

Whether you eschew marriage altogether or you welcome long-term partnership but on your terms, we are thankfully in a time when new relationship templates are being welcomed and embraced by those who desire relationships.

Previous generations often married for survival or necessity but this generation gets to partner based on shared values and goals. So, do you know what you want or need to be in a healthy relationship? Dr. Dom and Terri share some of their business as they illustrate how they defined what healthy relationships mean to them. Don’t feel left out! They’ve created the H.E.R. Relationship test, an assessment that will help you check the health of your current relationship or help you establish a framework of how you want to show up in your future relationship. They also reinforce that you don’t need to be with anyone to feel complete and if you do, you might want to talk to the lady about it. Book a consultation with Dr. Dom to discuss any issues of self-worth, attachment trauma, or self-esteem issues.

Lady, the H.E.R. Relationship Test isn’t the only goodie in this episode but you’ll have to tune in to find out the other actionable items you can implement today to help you find a relationship that works best for you!

    Season 31, Episode 11

    Show notes

Hey lady! This week Dr. Dom and Terri discuss a touchy but necessary subject – how to deal with the office bully, especially when the office bully looks like you.

By now we all know that being a mean girl is wack, late, and played out, but it is still a reality for some people in the office. So, how do you, as a grown woman with tools and skills, deal with those sticky, tricky, and often nuanced situations where the mean girl is trying to make you feel a way?

Terri and Dr. Dom offer a few scenarios, from their lived and witnessed experiences, of how these experiences play out and how they can seriously impact your wellbeing. The good news is that there are strategies to deal with challenging work situations. So, when the skinfolk at your job are not acting like kinfolk, charge it to the game but keep your eyes open. How, you may ask?

Tap in for a few tools for self-reflection and self-assessment so you can be aware of when that energy is coming at you, or when you are the energy that needs to be corrected. Keep growing, lady!

  20. Signs That You're The Toxic One in the Relationship | TBT

    Show notes

Lady, when was the last time you took a long hard look in the mirror to examine the negativity you may bring to your relationships? We know that doing so requires hard work and often a level of vulnerability that some of us will readily avoid. In today’s throwback episode, Terri and Dom offer us ways to identify when and why we are the toxic ones in our relationships. They also share some of their toxic ways. Within that sharing, the ladies also provide us with concrete steps to take if we are ready for making a change in our behavior patterns. Be sure to tune in and also scroll below for more information on tips and resources mentioned in this episode.

Quote of the Day: "Your toxicity in your relationships with other people is actually an extension of the toxicity in your relationship to yourself. What you have is not an issue with how you relate to others, but a fundamental trauma that is preventing you from being at ease within yourself. That is what you must address." - Brianna Wiest

    Takeaways:

    Signs it's you:
All of your problems are someone else's fault
You take more than you give
    There's so much drama
You have a major superiority complex
    You’re a Debbie Downer
You only express love or admiration when you need something.

    How to make the change:
Watch how people interact around you
Monitor your own thoughts and actions
    Apologize more and seek understanding
Identify the root of the toxicity and what must be done to heal
