80/20 Rule: More Is on the Other Side of Less

Episode Description
Eighty percent of what you're doing today is messing with you. You're spending your day managing stuff that doesn't move you forward.
We all do it. We add hacks, frameworks, apps, and blueprints because nobody likes having things taken away.
Today I'm taking the 80/20 rule you've heard a hundred times and adding some special sprinkles on top. More is on the other side of less. The people who get what they want are subtractive. I'll show you why, and I'll throw in a Tesla story that proves the point. Find your 20 percent and start cutting.
Featured Story
Twenty-some years ago, I watched David Allen teach his Getting Things Done system. It's an awesome system. After the talk, I walked up on stage and asked him what most people won't.
Let me know what you do. Not what you wrote.
He smiled, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a folded yellow sheet from a legal pad. He told me he carries it around all week.
I cracked up. That was his review. That was how he ran his life.
I can't tell you how many executives I've met since then with one piece of paper in their pocket. I carry one too. It changed how I think about keeping up.
Important Points
* Only 20 percent of what you do gets you results. Find those few actions first, then question why you keep the rest.
* Adding more means more to manage. The people who get what they want are subtractive. They take things off the plate.
* You likely know enough to do what you want already. What's missing is discipline, desire, and the nerve to cut stuff.
Memorable Quotes
* More is on the other side of less. The people who actually get what they want in life are subtractive in nature.
* Instead of keeping up, get rid of the stuff you're trying to keep up with. Then you won't have to keep up anymore.
* If you're not making the money you want, I guarantee you're not focused on the right 20 percent of your day.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Write down everything you did this week, then circle the 20 percent that actually moved your results or your money.
* Take a hard look at the other 80 percent and decide what you can drop, hand off, or stop managing starting today.
* Cut those things and keep your day so simple you know what matters without checking a system or a review again.

Episode Description
Most people wait until New Year's Eve, grab a glass of champagne, and try to plan a whole year in sixty seconds. That's not you.
High achievers plan in November. They settle things before Thanksgiving, enjoy December, and hit the ground running in January.
Today I'm walking you through the first steps I take my private clients through. No wheel of life. No stack of goals you'll never reach. Just a debrief brief, a look at what you'll create, and two simple lists I call the no mores and the many mores. Grab a pen and think.
Featured Story
The government keeps handing me titles. Two years ago they said I was a senior citizen. I told them to get out of my face.
Now they say I hit full retirement age on November 21st. Evidently that means I get to stop—recliner and crosswords for me.
It's not even possible.
Last year's word of the year was six-seven. I'm turning sixty-seven. This year's word is maxing, so I'm thinking about some six-seven maxing.
That takes planning too. Your mindset changes at this stage. I'm asking what more fun I can have and who else I can impact. That's why I'm changing the show. I'm not retiring. I'm rewiring.
Important Points
* Plan in November. Settle the big decisions before the holidays, rest in December, and start January already moving.
* Start with a retrospective debrief. Write a page on how this year went and how you felt, not just which goals you hit.
* Skip the values list up front. If you haven't done the awareness work, you'll make up your values and get them wrong.
Memorable Quotes
* You can't make a whole year plan in 60 seconds with a glass of champagne and a girl on your arm on New Year's Eve.
* You filled out your wheel of life last year, and it ran you over this year. So I think differently about planning.
* In year-end planning, we don't want to do anything about it. We want to create on top of it. That's the difference.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Look over your shoulder at this year and write a paragraph or a page about what happened, why, and how it felt to you.
* Use that debrief to decide what you'll create in 2027. Don't rush into action yet. Build something new on top of it.
* List your no mores, the things that are gone for good, then your many mores, the things you love and want more of.
Chapters
0:13 - Fifteen takes later, this Monday show rolls finally
1:02 - Why high achievers do their planning in November
4:07 - The government says I'm retiring on November 21st
6:06 - The debrief brief: looking back over your shoulder
7:48 - Prospection: you can build the track for your horse
9:22 - No mores, many mores, and why values come later

Motivation Isn't Dead. You're Just Using It for the Wrong Job.

Episode Description
The internet says motivation is dead. Jocko says count on discipline. My buddy Billy says all you need is execution.
I get it. I don't buy it.
I've worked with some of the most disciplined people in the world, and they still call me saying they need help getting moving. Today I'm throwing a few stones at the motivation-sucks crowd and showing you why motivation, discipline, and execution are three tools with three different jobs. Use the wrong one, and you'll blame yourself. Plus one question to ask before your weekend starts.
Featured Story
I have a lot of friends who do podcasts. Or want to. Some tell me they record one every couple of weeks, and that's okay. Others can't get themselves into the studio.
Then some of them finally come in, record an episode, and never post it.
I asked one of them why not. I can do five a day, and you can't post one every three or four weeks?
They aren't short on motivation. They're fired up about it. Something else is in the way.
This show is 5,600 episodes, every day for 20 years. Plenty of mornings I walked in here not feeling it at all. I showed up anyway.
Important Points
* Motivation is your why, discipline is showing up, and execution is knowing the next step. Each one has its own job.
* If you're fired up and still not moving, you either don't know the next step or you're scared of it. Fix that first.
* Shrink the job with an if-then plan. If this happens, then I'll do that. One small, clear step beats a wall of tasks.
Memorable Quotes
* People say motivation doesn't last. Neither does taking a bath. That's why we recommend it daily. It's maintenance.
* Discipline can't march you down a road you can't see. That's not a character flaw. That's just being human, guys.
* Motivation gets you to the start line, and it brings you back. Discipline keeps you showing up. Execution makes it real.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Let motivation do its job. Find what inspires you and use that spark to get yourself up to the starting line today.
* Build the discipline to show up every day, even on the mornings you're not feeling it, so the work keeps moving.
* When you stall, make an if-then plan for the next step, take it, and let motivation pull you home on the final lap.
Chapters
0:12 - Happy Friday, and some TMI you didn't ask for
1:48 - The question to ask before your weekend even starts
2:31 - Jocko, my buddy Billy, and the motivation-is-dead crowd
4:35 - Three tools, three jobs, and why you blame yourself
5:44 - Why every coach is suddenly selling you a framework
7:20 - The if-then plan that shrinks a scary next step
8:56 - 5,600 episodes and all the days I wasn't feeling it

Episode Description
Resilience is just about everything. And it's simpler than you think.
Ask ChatGPT or Claude how to stick with something, and you'll get a list of 50 things. You don't need 50. You need four honest questions.
I've picked these up over years of coaching business owners, and I still ask them in my groups every week. They're common sense, but most people never sit down and answer them. Today I'm walking you through all four, and why most people who quit didn't fail. They ran out of time or money first. Hang on for the ride.
Featured Story
Our HOA said paint the fence. It's a 20-year-old wrought iron fence, well made and expensive to replace, so painting it made sense. Simple enough.
Except it wasn't. We had to find people, get estimates, listen to how each one would do the job, and figure out the right way when we didn't even know what right looked like.
Then the crew showed up to spray paint it on a windy day. They pressure washed, sanded, primed, and laid down two coats. I watched how hard they pushed.
When they finished, they were all smiling, and they got paid fast. And it hit me how much resilience it took from all of us to make a fence better.
Important Points
* Whatever you think it'll take to learn your new business, it'll take longer. Plan for it, and lean on what you know.
* Decide you'll work as long as it takes. Put a three-year limit on it, and you've already set yourself up to fail.
* Know how long your money will last before you start. With six months of runway and no real plan, don't even start.
Memorable Quotes
* You're broke when you have no keys to anything. If you have any assets at all, you have more money than you think.
* When I set this business up, I said I'm willing to work as long as it takes. I don't care. I like what I'm doing.
* If you've never made $500,000 a year before, you don't understand what that feels like. You're just guessing, guys.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Figure out honestly how long it'll take to learn what you need to succeed, then add time, because it's always longer.
* Decide how long you're willing to work for it and how long your money will last, and make sure both cover that time.
* Set a realistic number for what you'll earn once money comes in, based on real figures, not what the internet says.
Chapters
0:15 - Four questions, not the 50 things ChatGPT hands you
1:16 - A windy day, a wrought iron fence, and a really hard job
3:21 - The struggling martial arts school that started it all
4:08 - Why it always takes longer to learn than you think
7:01 - How long your money will last, and when you're really broke
8:47 - How $100K a year quietly turned into $20,000 a month

Why Work-Life Balance Feels Impossible and What to Do Instead

Episode Description
Work-life balance. I don't like the phrase. Depending on the day, I think it's a little silly.
About 65% of workers believe they have to sacrifice their life to get ahead. They work 12-hour days, wonder why their kids don't like them, and wait for retirement to finally take control.
Today I'm giving you the one word that fixes balance, plus a new way I've been running my time with my clients and my Skool group. It builds on Monday's happy obsession. Once you hear it, balance takes care of itself. Press play.
Featured Story
For years, when people asked what I did, I'd say I'm in business. Or I'd say I'm semi-retired, because I work maybe 20 or 25 hours a week. Nobody got it.
So I changed my wording. Now when somebody asks, I say I'm retired. Oh, what do you do with your time? Well, I stay pretty busy. I manage a little business. It's not that little. And I do some investments.
And they light up. Man, that's what I want to do—just managing, consulting, things like that.
I've been doing that for 30 years. Same life, same work. I changed one word, and suddenly everybody understood what they'd been chasing.
Important Points
* Balance is something you do, not something you reach. Like riding a bike, you have to keep moving to stay upright.
* What you're really after in work-life balance is control. Get control now, and balance will take care of itself.
* Lock in a few non-negotiables and let everything else flow. Simple rules work better than rigid hours and ratios.
Memorable Quotes
* Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. Balance is something you do, not reach.
* I don't consider what I do working. I consider what I do, what I do—the working stuff I give to people or to AI.
* Control is a top factor in happiness for people who retire, and it's the thing most people who aren't retired want.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Admit that what you're chasing in work-life balance isn't a perfect scale. It's control over your own time and life.
* Lock in the few non-negotiables that matter most, and set simple rules for them instead of fixed hours or ratios.
* Let everything else flow around those rules, keep moving like you're on a bike, and let balance take care of itself.
Chapters
0:19 - Why I can't stand the phrase work-life balance
1:11 - Twenty seasons in, and some changes are coming
2:34 - The 65% who believe they must sacrifice to get ahead
3:58 - Einstein's bicycle and the seesaw that always drops
6:33 - Why I started telling everybody I'm retired

Episode Description
Trigger warning. We're talking about AI today. But not how to make money with it, build bots, or code apps.
This one is about what you and I have had to go through to get here. Most people in their forties and fifties never expected to go back to school for something called artificial intelligence. And this time you paid for it.
I spent a year buried in it so I could help my clients, and I came out the other side seeing it differently. Today I'm letting you off the hook a little. Hang on for the ride.
Featured Story
When AI first showed up, I didn't care. What's this chat thing? I didn't need it. About a year in, I looked again and saw what was coming.
So I dug deeper than most. It took a year. I stressed myself out, stayed up late, made apps, did all the vibe coding. I'm no stranger to computers. I bought a VIC-20 at 19 for about $300 I didn't have.
Where I landed surprised me. I don't even use many bots. Why get a bot to do the work when you can fix the work so you don't need the bot?
This past week I finished something in two hours that would have taken me a week a year ago.
Important Points
* If you run a business, you better use AI. You won't stay competitive without it, and it's more fun to build it in.
* AI made my drudgery disappear. Let it handle the grunt work so you can get back to the fun stuff you started to do.
* You've learned new skills dozens of times to get the job or land the client. AI is one more, and you can do it again.
Memorable Quotes
* People like easy. We're all wired for it, and that's exactly why AI is here to stay. We're not going to stop it.
* I paid the price. I put in the blood, sweat, and tears, and I learned something that is changing the entire world.
* If you haven't started, that's a choice. But if you're in business, you better get good at it. It's coming anyway.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Accept that AI is coming whether you learn it or not, and decide today that you're willing to pay the price to learn it.
* Put in the time on the learning curve. Take the courses, push through the frustration, and keep going until it clicks.
* Once you find your groove, hand AI the grunt work, fix your processes, and put those hours back into the fun stuff.
Chapters
0:15 - Trigger warning: we're talking about AI today, sort of
2:55 - Why 90% of people will never learn a thing about AI
3:53 - This isn't just tech; it's a whole lifestyle change
4:57 - A VIC-20 at 19 and a year of staying up way too late
6:58 - A week of work done in two hours, and the fun came back
9:23 - You've learned new skills before, and you can do it again

Passion Isn't Enough. Find Your Happy Obsession.

Episode Description
Are you a happy person? Not clap-your-hands happy. Just happy in general. Now, are you obsessive? I think the two go together when you do it right.
Psychologists talk about harmonious passion and obsessive passion—both work. But I've been testing a third version with my clients, my Inner Circle, and my Skool group. I call it a happy obsession.
Today I'm asking what you're happily obsessed about, and what happens when you flip the script and build your day around it instead of squeezing it in last. Don't wait until you're 65 to try this. Press play.
Featured Story
My first radio job was at WAKS in Fuquay-Varina—a daytime AM station. We read the obituaries on the air, tuned in to the tobacco auction, and played some country music. When a trucker blew his horn as he drove by, I had to open the mic and say, "Hey, trucker." It was the law in that town.
At seven o'clock we turned the transmitter off. That's when my buddy and I pulled our 45s out of the case and played rock and roll until two in the morning—big-time DJs in our minds.
Nobody could stop us. The whole day was just a way to get to that studio at night.
Then one night we forgot to turn the transmitter off.
Important Points
* Obsession and passion are really the same thing. Something grabs your attention, you're all in, and nobody stops you.
* Flip the script. Stop saving your happy obsession for after the business of the day and make it the reason for the day.
* Stay responsible. Pay the bills and give your boss his money's worth, then get it done fast so you can get back to it.
Memorable Quotes
* When you're obsessed, you can't wait to get back to it. You get out of bed in the morning, and that's the driver.
* You get out of bed in the morning, and that's what you do. Everything else is in the way of your happy obsession.
* Do not wait until you're 65 and retired to decide to do this. Decide to do it today. Watch how everything changes.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Ask yourself what you're happily obsessed about, the thing you'd do all day long if nobody stopped you, and name it.
* Flip the script so obsession leads your day, and the rest of the work becomes what you finish on the way back.
* Get efficient at the must-dos, stay responsible to your job and bills, and pour every hour you save into what you love.
Chapters
0:13 - Broadcasting live between the race cars and the rocket ships
2:44 - Obituaries, tobacco auctions, and rock and roll till 2 a.m.
3:46 - Harmonious, obsessive, and a third kind of passion
6:01 - Skipping the gym because the studio was calling me
7:15 - Why my clients' eyes crossed when I asked this question
8:25 - Don't wait until you're 65 and retired to do this

Dolly Parton Didn't Make It Look Easy. She Made It Easy.

Episode Description
Dolly Parton made a 60-year career look easy. It wasn't. But she made a handful of disciplined decisions early and repeated them for decades.
I took the grandkids to Dollywood this past week, my first visit since Dolly passed in August. It hit different. So I dug into what she actually did.
Today I'm walking you through how she owned her work before she was famous, built a brand out of who she was, partnered smart, protected her private core, and guarded a daily rhythm. It ties this whole week together. Listen in and steal a few.
Featured Story
Dolly wrote "I Will Always Love You" the same day she wrote "Jolene." It's on a cassette tape. Then Elvis called. He wanted to sing her song, but he also wanted the publishing rights.
She said no.
If you know the music business, you know the person who owns the publishing gets rich. Bands barely get paid for radio or streaming. The songwriter always gets paid. Dolly knew that.
Years later, Whitney Houston's version became the best-selling single ever by a female artist, and it made Dolly rich beyond imagination. She used to say her songs were like her children. In her old age, they'd support her.
Important Points
Own your work before you're famous. Stop giving your stuff away, because whoever owns it is the one who gets paid.
When your brand is who you already are, everything gets easier and more honest, and you almost never get busted.
Protect a daily rhythm. Dolly woke at 3 a.m., prayed, then wrote and handled business while the world was still calm.
Memorable Quotes
When your brand is simply who you are, everything gets easy. It gets honest as well. My brand is like me. A hot mess.
She made her biggest decision in advance and followed through. A system she built and a discipline that ran it.
It's not distance, it's protection. Always keep something back for you, and meet your own needs before anyone else's.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
Decide in advance what you'll never give away, whether it's your songs, your content, or your time, and own it.
Wrap your brand around who you already are, then bring in partners to scale the parts you shouldn't run yourself.
Guard a daily rhythm for your best hours, and tie the work to a purpose bigger than you so you keep on building.
Chapters
0:21 - Six hours of nonstop talking and loving every minute
1:37 - All week long and I never asked you to buy a thing
2:09 - A day at Dollywood with the grandkids after Dolly's gone
3:40 - Elvis wanted her song and its rights, and she said no
5:11 - A brand built on who she was, six-inch heels and all
6:21 - Half her park and the partners who scaled her vision
8:16 - A 3 a.m. rhythm, 332 million books, and building to the end

Episode Description
You keep saying you need more motivation. You don't. You have a decision problem.
Most of what we call deciding is wishing. "I want to grow my business" is a wish. A real decision has an edge to it. It cuts off other options, and that's exactly why we avoid it. Staying vague feels safe.
Today I'm giving you a simple test to tell the difference, plus why wishing looks so much like work. I'll even tease where Dolly Parton fits in. Listen in, then pick your there before you go looking for another way to get there.
Featured Story
This show is 20 years old. We were one of the first podcasts ever, before Apple even had a podcast directory. Apple sent me a note asking if I wanted to be in their new podcast thing. I said yes. That's how long ago this was.
Now, at 20 years, I've made a decision. Things are going to change at the end of the year. I won't tell you what yet, because y'all hold me to things.
What I will tell you is I've decided not to keep doing it the way I've been doing it. That decision cut off other options. And once it did, a hundred smaller choices disappeared.
Important Points
"I want to grow my business" is a wish. "I'm going to grow my business" is a decision. Learn to hear the difference.
If you've truly decided, you can name your next step and when you'll take it. If you can't, you haven't decided yet.
Wishing looks like work. Planning, podcasts, and research feel productive while they let you skip out on commitment.
Memorable Quotes
A decision has an edge to it. It cuts away other options. If nothing got cut, you didn't decide. You only wished.
Dreaming don't pay the bills and dreaming don't get stuff done. Sometimes you have to decide to make it happen.
Once you have made a decision, a hundred smaller choices kind of disappear, so you don't need willpower anymore.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
Write down the thing you keep saying you want, then rewrite it from "I want to" into "I'm going to" and mean it.
Cross off at least one option that decision cuts away, because if nothing got cut, you only made another wish.
Name the very next step and the day you'll take it, then put it on your calendar before you finish this episode.
Chapters
0:15 - You don't have a motivation problem; you have a decision one
1:45 - Twenty years, one of the first podcasts, and a big change
3:00 - My simple goal is to wake up and have an awesome day
4:39 - Dreaming don't pay the bills, so decide to make it happen
5:32 - Decide means to cut off, and that's why we avoid it
7:45 - Wishing looks like work, plus a test for a real decision
8:41 - Dolly decided to own her songs long before Elvis called

Disciplined People Don't Try Harder. They Set It Up Better.

Episode Description
Everybody wants the exact steps. The perfect app, the morning routine, the cold plunge. I've watched productivity hacks come and go for 20 years, and most of them don't move the needle.
The people who look disciplined aren't straining harder than you. They've arranged their days so they face fewer fights. That's it.
Today I'm walking through what the science says about willpower, habits, procrastination, and that phone sitting next to you. Then I'll give you the four things productivity really comes down to. Stop hunting for the hack and build a setup that carries you.
Featured Story
Twenty years ago, I came into this world right in the Four Hour Work Week era, an original laptop lifestyle guy. But I never sat down and decided to build a freedom lifestyle. My wife had passed away. When you go through a disruption that big, you get quantum change.
My change was this. I just didn't want to go back to doing it the other way. So I said, okay, let's do it this way, and I went after it.
What I've learned since is that freedom without structure falls apart fast. The freedom I wanted only worked once I built a setup to carry it.
Important Points
Willpower isn't a tank that runs dry. Disciplined people arrange their days so they face fewer temptations to fight.
Missing one day won't break a habit. Missing a week will. Get a little done every single day, and you'll keep rolling.
Procrastination is an emotion problem, not a time problem. Fix how the task makes you feel, and the calendar follows.
Memorable Quotes
People with strong self-control don't resist harder. They just arrange their days to have fewer fights. That's it.
Willpower is your friend who shows up to make you do things you don't want to do. As soon as it stops you, it leaves.
You're not putting it off because you're lazy or disorganized. You're avoiding how the task makes you feel inside.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
Get clear on why the work matters to you, because valuing the work beats chasing your passion every single time.
Build structure around that work by deciding in advance: at 8 a.m. I open this file, and I do this task, no debate.
Protect that time by putting your phone in another room, so willpower never has to show up and fight on your behalf.
Chapters
0:15 - Why disciplined people don't work any harder than you
2:00 - How losing my wife made me a laptop lifestyle guy
3:00 - The cold plunge and other hacks that only feel good
4:15 - Willpower is overrated, and setup beats strain
5:16 - Habits don't take 21 days, and one missed day is fine
7:59 - Your phone is costing you even when you don't touch it
9:45 - Four things productivity really comes down to

You Can't Get What You Want Until You Decide What It Is

Episode Description
Yesterday I gave you 12 levers. Today I'm boiling everything down to two. Some of you will be disappointed. Some of you will say, thank God somebody finally said it.
After 20 years of this show and tens of thousands of coaching conversations, I've noticed people don't need another system. They need a decision. And most of the time they already know what they want. They just haven't said it out loud.
Listen in, then sit down and answer one question for yourself today. Then get out of bed and go get it.
Featured Story
On an Inner Circle call this week, I dared to talk about values. One gentleman pushed back. He said you can't figure out your values in a 90-minute call. I told him I think you can do it in 30 seconds. We all have values. What you can't solve in 90 minutes is how we all get along with different ones.
So I poked the bear. On purpose. For about 70 minutes I facilitated and nudged, knowing people would eventually stop tolerating me and push back. When they did, that was my point. Then I taught them the one word I use when I know I can't change someone's mind.
Important Points
Don't start with the how or the why. Start with the what. Decide what you want, and the rest finally has a direction.
If you can't put what you want into words, you still know it. You've just never said it out loud before, so practice.
Keep asking yourself what your goal really means, again and again, until the decision is deep enough to act on.
Memorable Quotes
If you want to get anything in your life, you have to decide what you want. Until you decide, you don't get it.
It's a ridiculous miracle that we get along at all. Our ability to tolerate each other's differences makes it work.
There's going to be a lot of buts, a lot of overwhelm, a lot of confusion. It doesn't change that you must go get it.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
Sit down tomorrow morning and decide what you want from your day, your work, your money, and your relationship.
Say it out loud, then keep asking what it means until the decision is specific enough that you can act on it now.
Get out of bed and go get it, like a run to the store for milk, without waiting for anyone to hand you the steps.
Chapters
0:18 - Twenty years of showing up without a grand plan
1:14 - Poking the bear on a coaching call about values
4:00 - The one word I use when I can't change your mind
5:31 - Step one is so simple it might disappoint you
7:10 - Why you can't put into words what you already know
9:44 - Everything comes down to one sentence and one step

Self-Improvement Isn't the Problem: You Already Know What Works

Episode Description
Everybody's saying self-help doesn't work these days. And yet people keep listening. I get it, and this week we're taking that head-on.
On the drive home from Tennessee, I found a podcast about a book that broke 500 self-help books down into 12 levers that actually work. I went in expecting bogus. Some of it was. Some of it I agree with.
So I'm walking you through all 12 with my honest take, after tens of thousands of coaching hours. Grab the ones that fit you, skip the rest, and start using them today.
Featured Story
My niece got married in Tennessee. I'm not a wedding guy, but the whole family stayed at the same hotel in Sevierville, and that turned it into a reunion. Five cousins, ages five to 13, running between the pool and the breakfast buffet like they'd never been apart. It made me want to be five again.
Then came the drive home. If you've driven through those mountains, you know the radio fades in and out. I got bored and streamed a podcast instead. Two guys had studied 500 self-help books and boiled them down to 12 levers. My wife and I had nothing but road ahead, so I listened. I was sure it would be bogus.
Important Points
Before you chase a fix, unravel the cause. No coach or doctor can help you until you know what's really going on.
Values live in your heart. Principles guide you toward them. Know both, or every outside change you try won't stick.
Confidence comes back one small win at a time. Face a fear this week, share the win, and watch yourself come back.
Memorable Quotes
If you don't know what drives you from the inside out, you won't be able to change anything from the outside in.
You can't walk into the doctor and expect a prescription in 30 seconds. First he has to figure out what's going on.
Most people come to coaching wanting it fixed today. It's impossible, man. We have to go through a few steps first.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
Unravel the cause first. Before you look for any solution, get honest about what's really going on in your heart.
Name the values that guide you, because once you know what drives you from the inside, your next move gets clear.
Pick one fear tied to that move, face it in a small way this week, then share the win and let your confidence grow.
Chapters
0:15 - Self-help doesn't work, so why do we keep listening
1:14 - Twenty seasons in and a decision I won't reveal yet
2:03 - A niece's wedding and the magic of cousins at the pool
3:33 - A road trip podcast promising 12 levers that work
4:44 - Lever one: you can't fix anything until you unravel it
7:44 - Why the back half of the list feels tossed in
9:56 - Same old ideas with a new name, and tomorrow's two

What Was I Thinking? Why Smart People Say Yes to the Wrong Goals
October 16, 2026 | Episode 5565
Go beyond the boost! Join my Skool group at https://faceyourpassion.com
Episode Description
You're six months into something. It's 2 a.m. You're staring at the ceiling thinking, what was I thinking?
Nobody forced you. You said yes. Sometimes you even saw it coming and did it anyway.
Today we're digging into what I call the what-was-I-thinking goal. Why smart people say yes to the wrong things, why we stay too long once we start, and the simple checks you can run before your next yes. Feel the middle, not the finish. Set your exit point before you begin. Your future self will thank you.
Featured Story
For years, people have asked me what kind of clients I work with. I tell them, let's talk about the ones who need help staying married.
They look at me funny. Wait, I thought you did business coaching.
I do. But so many of the business owners I work with are trading their relationship for all the hours they put in at work. They never named the trade. They just kept saying yes.
And some of them end up divorced.
So I get right in the middle of it. Let's work on the business, but let's make sure your wife still likes you. And as a bonus, because I'm Scott, your kids will like you too.
Important Points
* We overestimate how good the win will feel and forget the grind. Picture the middle of the goal, not the finish.
* Pretend it starts next month. If you'd say no then, your yes depends on free time you don't really have right now.
* Set an exit point before you start. If X hasn't happened by Y, you stop or change course, and that isn't quitting.
Memorable Quotes
* Be the best quitter you can be, as long as you've done your research and know what you're doing. Sometimes you should quit.
* Every yes is a no to something else. Time with your family, your health, your work. Name what you're trading for it.
* When you call me to sell me something, the price doesn't matter to me. It's the time. That's it. Time matters.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Before saying yes, picture the middle of the goal and ask if you'd still sign up if it started 30 days from now.
* Run a pre-mortem by imagining it failed a year from now, then write down why and name what this yes will cost you.
* Set a clear exit point before you start, then stop or change course the moment that line arrives without results.
Chapters
0:16 - Friday DMs and that 3 a.m. what-was-I-thinking feeling
3:28 - Two ways you end up somewhere you didn't plan
4:28 - Why we're terrible at predicting how we'll feel
5:25 - The sunk cost trap and being a good quitter
6:21 - Feel the middle of the goal, not the finish
7:12 - Pretend it's next month and run a pre-mortem
8:44 - Every yes is a no, and setting your exit point

Episode Description
My wife has been right about a lot of things for 20 years. Annoying, isn’t it?
Today I’m sharing the best advice I’ve collected from her, with my man explanation of what each one teaches about business and life. Some of it’s about skimming instead of seeing. Some of it’s about listening instead of fixing. And some of it’s about going to bed instead of answering that 11:30 p.m. email.
Husbands, listen closely. Wives, you have more power than you think, because believe it or not, we’re listening. This one might keep you married.
Featured Story
Last week my insurance company sent me a Cologuard kit. If you’re young and don’t know what that is, lucky you.
I didn’t want to. Nobody wants to do it. So I did what guys do. I put it off for about a week.
My wife doesn’t negotiate on this stuff. Go to the doctor. Not next week. Not if it still hurts. Stop negotiating and go.
Finally, she handed me the box and told me, in very plain words, exactly where to go and what to do with it.
I’ve never won that argument. Not once in 20 years. And honestly, I’ve started to wonder why she works so hard to keep me alive.
Important Points
* We glance at the bank statement, the calendar, and the client list. Look closely, or you’ll miss what’s right there.
* Before blaming the economy or the weather for a bad mood, check when you last ate. Sometimes the fix is a sandwich.
* Most people aren’t asking you to fix anything. They want you to listen, and they’ll tell you when they need your help.
Memorable Quotes
* I teach planning for a living. Your brain is for thinking, not storage. If it matters, get it out of your head.
* Nothing good has ever come from answering emails at 11:30 at night. It can wait till morning. Go to bed, she says.
* I’ve blamed bad moods on the economy, the weather, and my wifi. Nope. It’s a sandwich. You’re not tired, you’re hungry.
Scott’s Three-Step Approach
* Slow down and look closely at your numbers, calendar, and clients instead of skimming and deciding nothing’s there.
* Take care of the basics first by eating, sleeping, and seeing the doctor before you blame the world for how you feel.
* Put the phone down and listen to the people in front of you, because being present keeps them close.
Chapters
0:15 - An homage to the women who shaped my life
3:45 - Did you actually look or stare into the fridge
4:48 - You’re not tired, you’re hungry, and other truths
5:45 - Podcast Scott versus the guy who lives at home
6:44 - Go to the doctor and the Cologuard showdown
7:19 - Nobody asked you to fix it; they want you to listen
8:59 - Put the phone down, wants versus needs, and go to bed

10 Questions That Get Your Head Straight About Work and Life

Episode Description
Some weeks you need a pep talk. Other weeks you need better questions.
Today I'm giving you 10 of them. Use them as journal prompts, talk them over with your spouse, or sit with them on your drive. They cover the work you want to be doing a year from now, what to hand off, who you want to serve, what you want to be known for, and the money numbers you've kept vague.
I'm in this category too. I spend a lot of time keeping my own head straight. Grab a pen. Your answers might surprise you.
Featured Story
Twenty years ago, my wife Cheryl was sick with cancer. Even then, she had all these plans. Little things she wanted to do. She kept saying, I'm going to do that before I die.
Then one day she got dehydrated. Her energy just disappeared. From that day forward, she was mostly in bed.
Her health went away fast. For the next 90 days, she never got to do the things she'd talked about. I took her out to dinner once during those 90 days—one time.
I think about that whenever someone tells me they'll deal with their health later. Health is wealth sounds nice. It doesn't mean much when you're too worn out to use it.
Important Points
* Picture the actual work you want on your calendar a year from now, not your title, then start clearing what won't fit.
* Name the parts of your job you'd hand off to a person, a system, or AI so you can focus on what only you can do.
* Vague money goals go nowhere. Set real numbers for what you want to earn, save, and invest, and you can start the plan.
Memorable Quotes
* It takes decades of life to understand that if you don't like what you do, you stop doing it. I know. It's wild.
* There are enough bad, ugly, and yes, evil people in the world. You may as well choose the good ones and serve them.
* If anybody's draining you, get a plug. Stop it. Choose the people you spend your time with, at work and away from it.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Decide what work you want filling your calendar a year from now and what you want it to give you besides a paycheck.
* Hand off the tasks that drain you to a person, system, or AI, and spend that time with people who fill you back up.
* Put real numbers on what you'll earn, save, and invest, then protect your time off and health so you can enjoy it.
Chapters
0:18 - A frisky week and stepping on the right toes
1:17 - Do what makes your heart sing and make a great living
3:51 - The work you want on your calendar a year from now
4:23 - What to hand off to a person, a system, or AI
7:14 - The skill I learned two years ago that changed everything
9:21 - Real money numbers instead of a vague million
10:48 - Losing Cheryl and why health has to make the list

Your Life Gets Calmer When Everyone Knows What to Expect

Episode Description
Most of the friction in your life isn't random. It usually comes from an expectation nobody said out loud.
When work, your marriage, or your health doesn't turn out the way you counted on, it wigs you out. You feel stuck. You're not broken. You're in the gap between an old expectation and what's real right now.
Today I'm breaking expectations into three kinds: what you expect of yourself, what you expect of others, and what others expect of you. Get clear on all three, say them out loud, and watch how much calmer life gets.
Featured Story
A couple of days ago somebody told me, "Scott, you can always expect me to show up authentically, unapologetically myself."
I didn't say anything. But I thought, well, damn, you might want to work on that.
That line wasn't working for them. They'd decided how they would show up, and nobody around them got the memo.
My father-in-law used to say, " Don't assume anything. You're just making an ass out of you and me. It took me a long time to get it. I literally had to sit down and spell it out.
If you bulldoze through life being yourself and you never told anyone what to expect, whose fault is that?
Important Points
* Most stuck feelings come from old expectations that no longer match your life. You're not broken. You're in the gap.
* Unspoken expectations of others create surprises. Say what you expect out loud, and many bad patterns fade away.
* After a real shift, people still expect the old you. Tell them what changed, then live it so your words match your life.
Memorable Quotes
* Most people have put no time into thinking about what they expect of themselves or anybody else. I see it all the time.
* You're not broken. You're just in the gap. The gap is that not-moving feeling you have right now, and it's real.
* If you're bumping into people constantly, let me tell you, it ain't on them. Look at what you're expecting of them.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Write down what you expect of yourself now, after whatever shift you've been through, not who you used to be before.
* Spell out what you expect from the people around you, then tell them directly instead of hoping they guess right.
* Let others know what's changed in you, and back it up by living it every day so their old expectations catch up.
Chapters
0:15 - Podcast day, coffee, and why my wife brings me tea
1:10 - What a peaceful base means and why it's never done
3:06 - Disruption is just an expectation that broke
4:18 - You're not broken, you're just stuck in the gap
5:05 - Expectation one: what you expect of yourself
5:48 - Expectation two: the things you never said out loud
7:11 - Expectation three: people still expect the old you

Why Your Biggest Breakthrough Comes Right After Your Hardest Season

Episode Description
Have you ever come through a brutal stretch of life and found yourself thinking differently about everything on the other side? That's not luck.
Today we're talking about quantum change. Not the woo-woo kind. The kind researchers have studied for years, with a pattern so consistent they can name it.
I'm walking you through the four marks of a real before-and-after moment, and the one thing that almost always comes first. If life feels shaken right now and you can't seem to move, this one's for you. You might be closer to lift-off than you think.
Featured Story
Twenty years ago, my first wife passed away. Nothing about that season was easy.
Something shifted in me then. It was vivid. I didn't plan it or schedule it. It showed up uninvited, and it stuck.
I refuse to go back to who I was before. It's done. I'm not that person anymore.
I do what I do today- this show, the coaching, all of it- because of that moment. That's what a quantum change looks like from the inside.
When I talk to people who feel stuck and shaken, I recognize it. They're usually standing right at the edge of their own before-and-after moment, and they don't know it yet.
Important Points
* Quantum change is vivid, surprising, benevolent, and enduring. It's a before-and-after moment, not slow improvement.
* Almost every real breakthrough follows a season of strain, stress, or loss. The disruption is the setup, not failure.
* You'll change when you wear yourself out. Stop patching little things and accept that the shift has already started.
Memorable Quotes
* I'm a positive, upbeat guy, but I'm only upbeat when I can ground myself in facts. That's my motivation.
* The disruption is the setup. It's not a sign that you're broken. You're just being set in the ground to lift off.
* I refuse to go back to who I was. You don't go back. It doesn't mean anything to you anymore. It's done, man.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Look honestly at the hard season you're in, and name what you've been tap-dancing around for months or even years.
* Ask whether a shift has already happened in you, and stop fixing every little thing to avoid admitting it.
* Accept the change and move forward, then bring your questions to someone who can help you turn it into action.
Chapters
0:15 - Daytona, Oktoberfest, and a talk about hard seasons
2:26 - Why I want facts first, not unicorns and rainbows
3:22 - Quantum change and why it's not as woo-woo as it sounds
4:36 - The four marks of a real before-and-after moment
6:53 - How losing my first wife became my quantum change
8:18 - Why breakthroughs almost always follow strain and loss
9:26 - Accepting the change that may already be happening

How to Stay Focused on Your Vision

Episode Description
You built something good. You're making money, people count on you, and you're proud of it. But life keeps getting in the way.
So when do you finally get to do what you started all this for?
Today we're talking about your founder's vision. What it is, why busy never goes away, and how to protect it from every detour on your path. I'm giving you one simple question to ask before you say yes to anything new. Know your vision. Defend it. Live it. Let's go.
Featured Story
Years ago, I sat in a Tony Robbins event, Date with Destiny. We did what everybody does. Write down your values. Honesty, integrity, love, the big list.
After doing this work professionally for a long time, I noticed something. Every value people write down either moves them away from what they don't like or toward what they want.
Nobody writes down the values they're living today. The real ones. The ones that show up in how they run their business and their life right now.
That gap changed how I coach. Until you see where you really stand, you can't grow into anything new, and you won't.
Important Points
* Success doesn't bring a quiet place at the end of the rainbow. The better you get, the more people want from you.
* Ask one question before every opportunity: does this move me closer to the life and business I want, or further away?
* Write down the values you're living today first, then set the values you want to grow into over the next few years.
Memorable Quotes
* Everything changes in an instant. That's why you need a vision. When you do the work, you have to start living it.
* People say they're always running around putting out fires. I tell them, yeah, but you lit most of them yourself.
* Whatever vision you have, you're supposed to go live it. This is not some imaginary thing. Listen, you're in charge.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Know your vision by writing down how you want your life and business to look, your values, and who you care for.
* Defend that vision by asking whether each new opportunity moves you closer to it, and saying no when it doesn't.
* Live your vision today instead of someday, and give yourself time to grow into it as the old patterns fall away.
Chapters
0:15 - Happy Friday and why it should be happy just because
2:23 - Life begins when you move, still my core message
3:09 - There's no quiet place at the end of the rainbow
3:36 - Your founder's vision and why you're the one in control
5:36 - The arsonist firefighter and other people's hot mess
7:59 - The one simple question that guards your vision
8:13 - What the classic values exercise always misses

Why Your Team Isn't Motivated

Episode Description
Everybody wants that feeling. You get out of bed, you feel great, and you can't wait to get going. Your team wants it too.
Most leaders try to motivate people with a mission statement on the wall. It doesn't land. People need a mission that fires them up personally, not just the company.
Today I'm breaking down my acronym, BAM—a big, awesome, motivating mission. We'll talk about what it is, why it scares you a little, and how giving one to the people around you changes everything. Listen in and find yours.
Featured Story
I've spent my whole life in radio, so I listen hard. I hear between the lines, the breath, the pause before someone answers.
Years ago I noticed something in person, and now I see it on Zoom calls all the time. I'll be an hour into a conversation with a sharp, successful client. Maybe a PhD, someone who's done it all. They're telling me why their big idea won't work.
Then a tiny smile shows up around their mouth. It's involuntary. They're trying to hold it back.
Every word they're saying stops mattering. That little smile tells me we just struck a chord, and I know what they really want.
Important Points
* That motivated feeling you're chasing comes from a lot of work, plus a mission big enough to pull you out of bed.
* Pay attention to what scares you and excites you at the same time, because that's usually where the good stuff lives.
* If you want a motivated team, give them a mission that fires them up personally, not just the company's mission.
Memorable Quotes
* Big is relative to you. When you've got a big problem, a big solution, or something exciting, you get excited.
* That big, awesome, tingly motivational feeling comes from a lot of freaking work. Don't say that out loud on a podcast.
* A lot of the good stuff in life scares you. I promise you, if it scares you, you probably have to deal with it.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Write down your own big, awesome, motivating mission, the dream that makes you grin when you finally say it out loud.
* Learn what fires up each person on your team so that you can connect their own personal drive to the bigger vision.
* Share a mission with them that serves both of you, then watch the people around you relax, lean in, and get to work.
Chapters
0:28 - Big, awesome, and the acronym that makes it work
4:42 - The secret behind that big motivating feeling
4:51 - What a mission really means and why you need one
5:53 - The dreams you stopped thinking about 20 years ago
6:36 - The tiny smile that tells me what you really want
8:12 - How to give your team a mission that fires them up

How to Avoid Burnout When You Own the Business

Episode Description
Some days you can't tell if you're burnt out or just excited. But when it's real burnout, you know.
When you own the business, the work never stops. There's always one more email, one more call, one more thing.
Today I'm sharing tools I've taught for about 20 years and just taught my inner circle again this week. Default behaviors that take the thinking out of your day. Rock-solid boundaries that cut the drama. And one shift that changed how I run my whole business. Listen in and get your energy back.
Featured Story
Years ago, I did morning radio. I'd get to the station around 5:15, go on the air at six, and be off at ten. Four hours on. Seven hours in the building, tops.
When I walked out, I turned it off. I was done.
Then I became an entrepreneur and did what everybody does. I worked from the moment I got out of bed until I fell asleep, then dreamed about it all night and woke up exhausted.
So I went back to what radio taught me. Now I put on my hat, grab my coffee, and work my shift. I run this whole business on about 20 hours a week, and it starts with one decision.
Important Points
* Set default behaviors for your day, your meals, and your business so you stop burning energy on the same decisions.
* Build rock-solid boundaries and be ruthless about them, because without them the drama of every bad day wins out.
* Work your business like a shift. Show up, do the work, then shut the door and walk away, even from a home office.
Memorable Quotes
* Everything is a pattern. Your business is a pattern. Your money's a pattern. You're a pattern. You should live in one.
* When you can default to a certain response, you've been trained. The training kicks in, and you have no emergency.
* I walk in, put my hat on, grab my cup of coffee, and get to work. As soon as I'm done, I shut the door and leave.
Scott's Three-Step Approach
* Notice the default behaviors you already have, and get yourself back into the daily rhythm that works best for you.
* Lock in rock-solid boundaries around that rhythm, and plan your responses so surprises don't knock you down.
* Treat your work as a shift with a clear start and finish, then walk out the door and leave it there for the day.
Chapters
0:16 - Burnt out or just excited, and how to tell the difference
1:41 - The free one-sheet planner that changes your week fast
2:51 - Default behaviors and my overnight oats rule
4:20 - Pre-planned responses that end the emergencies
5:18 - Rock-solid boundaries in a 24/7 online business
6:39 - Why I run my business like a morning radio shift
8:26 - Three moves to beat burnout starting today
