DNA: ID
We all hear stories almost daily now about cold cases being solved by investigative genetic genealogy. This new crime-solving tool answers the "who" question about these often decades-old crimes... but what about the why? This podcast will look at crimes solved by genetic genealogy, and examine the connection - if any - between the victim and the killer, and why the crime occurred. Each case is unique, and has its own story behind the headline. Join us for DNA: ID. New episodes will come out every other week on Mondays.

Episode 296
Show notes
Episode 214 Doe ID: 'Highway 401 Jane Doe' Patsy Flora Lagarde
In April 2004, there was passenger car/big rig collision on a major highway in Toronto, Canada that resulted in a Toyota Corolla being entirely consumed by fire. Good Samaritans at the scene were unable to save the car’s passenger, but the driver walked away virtually unscathed. But once crash investigators started to examine the scene, things did not add up. And the driver was not cooperative, refusing to relate the name of the dead woman in his car. When IGG was used to identify Patsy Lagarde after 22 years, it provided some answers to her family…but far from all of them.

Saad Kawaf Part 1 of 2
Show notes
Episode 213 Saad Kawaf Part 1 of 2
The May 1999 home invasion robbery and murder of Jacksonville, FL businessman Saad Kawaf was an unusual crime, with two perpetrators and a surviving witness. The leads were plentiful – the survivor saw the killer and his accomplice’s faces; a witness saw the getaway vehicle; and there was DNA. The investigation into Saad’s financial activities by a task force also provided a promising avenue of investigation, until the leads fizzled and the case went cold. Twenty years later, when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office authorities used IGG to finally get answers, they were truly shocking, pointing to one of the last people anyone would have suspected. Few cases have outcomes as bleak as this one – but at least, justice was served at long last.

Laguna Hills John Doe, now known to be 17 year old Michael Ray Schlicht, is believed to be one of the early victims of Randy Kraft. Show notes
Episode 211 Caroline Bolen
Caroline Bolen’s 1988 death in Silsbee, TX presented a real conundrum to investigators. No one, including the pathologist, was even certain that her death was a homicide. “Carol” had been found dead in her bed, nude and posed, with blood on the bedding and her young son alive next to her. The bizarre case had suspects coming out of the woodwork, but police followed the evidence, which led to none of the men in Caroline’s life. When IGG finally pointed to Caroline’s killer, the answer was surprising… because he had been there all along.

Episode 210 Doe ID Mary McLeod Davidson Moffatt
In 1995, a violently murdered Jane Doe who came to be known as the Danforth Lady was found under a building excavation at the old Robertson Motors in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. TPS efforts to identify her went nowhere, even when they finally obtained DNA, which was degraded and heavily contaminated due to the age of the remains. Earlier this year, a final attempt to extract precious genetic material paid off, and Danforth Lady was identified as Mary McLeod Davidson Moffatt. TPS Det. Const. Mike Kelly was able to reconstruct Mary’s story, and to identify a prime suspect in her murder. The answers were shocking, but also meant justice at long last for Mary.

Episode 209 The Four Sexual Assault Survivors of Unknown John Doe Offender
*This episode carries a trigger warning* In 2001, an 84 year old woman was raped in her home in Manchester, CT. In 2004, another Manchester woman was raped. In 2007, another. In 2008, a fourth woman from the neighboring town of Vernon was victimized. A recognizable pattern emerged, and investigators knew they had a serial rapist on their hands. But they didn’t know who he was. A John Doe warrant provided probable cause for arrest, but 10 years elapsed before IGG gave a name to John Doe. And the identity of the suspect would shock the community to its core.

Introducing The Consult: Real FBI Profilers — The Tylenol Murders
In the fall of 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been deliberately laced with cyanide. The poisonings triggered a nationwide panic, an enormous investigation, and changes to product packaging that are still with us today. More than four decades later, no one has ever been charged with the murders.
In this episode of The Consult: Real FBI Profilers, retired FBI profiler Julia Cowley is joined by her former FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit colleagues Angela Sercer, Susan Kossler Drew, and Bob Drew to examine the Tylenol Murders from a behavioral perspective. Who was the offender targeting? What can the method of poisoning tell us about motive, planning, and risk? And what does the behavior suggest about the person responsible?

In the summer of 1995, Patricia “Patsy” Barnes was a fixture in the Seattle, WA transient community. Patsy never met a stranger, and when she disappeared, police had a lot of work to do to try to figure out who shot her, wrapped her nude body in an old sleeping bag, and dumped her in a ditch in a residential neighborhood in Kitsap County. Despite their best efforts and a detailed sketch of her abductor, the case went unsolved. It took four consistent samples of DNA and IGG to identify her killer, whose own story was a tale as old as time, with a dramatic finalé.

While Jess is on summer break preparing new episodes of DNA ID, we are airing some of our favorite one part episodes weekly in what we call 'DNA ID Replay' episodes. In this episode, we explore the case of Michelle Wyatt which originally aired back in episode 38.
In 1980, college student Michelle Wyatt was living in Santee, outside San Diego, California. Her boyfriend visited with her at her condo, and then he said he left, locking the door behind him. Michelle's roommate found her the next day, beaten, raped and strangled. Police were suspicious of Michelle's boyfriend, but they focused in on a coworker who admitted to stalking her and confronting her boyfriend in a fit of jealousy. Years later, DNA evidence would show that neither of these men killed Michelle. Her case went cold until in 2019, it was reopened by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department cold case unit – and a detective who would crack the case using forensic genealogy. The killer, he would discover, was right there all along – in the detective's high school yearbook.

In 1973, a double homicide shocked Billings, Montana. A young couple was found murdered in their locked home. They had no enemies, yet clues at the scene told police that their killer was not a stranger. And things he took away with him indicated that he had a personal interest in one of his victims. Episode 201 DNA ID Replay Kelly Ann Prosser
While Jess is on summer break preparing new episodes of DNA ID, we are airing some of our favorite one part episodes weekly in what we call 'DNA ID Replay' episodes. In this episode, we explore the case of Kelly Ann Prosser which originally aired in episode 25.
8 year old Kelly Ann Prosser set out to walk home from school on September 20th, 1982 in Columbus, Ohio. She never made it home. Her little body was found less than 48 hours later in a cornfield. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. A very strong suspect was named, and then ruled out. Over the decades police heard of several confessions and investigated persons of interest, but they never came close to catching Kelly's killer. A 2014 CrimeStoppers tip naming him got his name close, but not close enough for investigators to identify him. Finally forensic genealogy tracked him down. He was dead, but once police learned his name, they were not surprised. Harold Warren Jarrell had a history of sex crimes against children, and left a lengthy record of violent crimes in his wake.
