She Gave Birth to 17 Rabbits. The King's Surgeon Believed Her.
Season 1, Episode 31
Show notes
Did Mary Toft concoct the most elaborate medical hoax?
In October 1726, newspapers reported that a woman from Godalming, Surrey had given birth to animal viscera. Within only a few weeks, she had delivered over a dozen rabbits.
Respected surgeons examined her, claiming it was all real. The King’s own personal physician staked his entire reputation and published a book, confirming the reports.
Soon, visitors were cycling through the delivery room to have a look for themselves. And many believed that Mary had formed these pregnancies through “maternal impressions,” with the power of her mind.
In this episode of DGSG, we explore whether this was a genuine biological anomaly or if the peasant Mary and her accomplices somehow duped countless witnesses. And if she had duped them, a modern retrospective questions the extent of the manipulation and self-inflicted violence that had to take place… to make it all seem real.

She Let a Dead Daughter Take Control of Her Body
Season 1, Episode 30
Show notes
Did Mary Roff return from the dead by possessing the body of another teenager, Lurancy Vennum?
In this Halloween episode, we cover America’s first and most-documented possession case: the Watseka Wonder. In 1878, 13-year-old Lurancy began experiencing bizarre trances, terrifying physical episodes, and visions of spirits. But when a local Spiritualist claimed he could help her, something extraordinary happened. Lurancy allegedly became Mary Roff, a young woman who had died 12 years earlier.
Lurancy suddenly couldn’t recognize her own family. Instead, she claimed to remember specific details of Mary’s family. Fully supported by all the adults involved, she went to live in the home of the grieving Roff family in the form of their resurrected daughter.
In this episode of Do Geese See God, with host Austin Lee, we break down this chilling case of spirit possession. Was it proof of life after death, a remarkable psychological phenomenon, or something far more complicated? We also dissect the rise in Spiritualism, mysterious medical episodes, suspiciously convenient memories, and the families caught in the middle of turmoil and tragedy.

They Blamed a Corpse for Nine Deaths: The Real Vampire of Kisiljevo
Season 1, Episode 29
Show notes
Were vampires once… real?
In July 1725, nine people died in eight nights in a small Serbian village. A health official thought the mystery could be explained by an epidemic, but the witness statements didn’t add up. All the villagers claimed the victims had been assaulted and murdered by Peter Blagojević, a man who had been dead for weeks. The villagers called him “vampiri,” meaning “back from the dead.”
In this episode of DGSG, we dive into the origins of real vampires. From a misunderstanding of decomposition and epidemiology to the mass panic of folklore becoming reality, vampires were perceived as real, murderous creatures of the night. And the response to this hysteria created an international phenomenon. This widespread fear within a brutal and primitive past would evolve through literature, giving us our modern perceptions of romantic, bat-like, metaphorical vampires.

She Emptied a Family Home in 24 Hours: The Hissing Hag of Detroit
Season 1, Episode 28
Show notes
When actual nightmares become reality: The Old Hag of Martin Street.
In October 1962, Shirley Patterson stayed in the cramped, back bedroom of his cousin’s rental house in Detroit. The horrific hissing hag who appeared in the room that night later drew hundreds of onlookers and got the story featured in the Detroit Free Press.
Bill Adams, Shirley’s cousin, a soft-spoken Army veteran, didn’t believe in ghosts. But within 24 hours, this oppressive, mutilated, smelly, hissing, greasy-haired hag would drive Bill and his entire family out of the house.
This week on DGSG, returning guest Loyd and host Austin Lee dig into the local story of the Old Hag of Martin Street. We break down every creepy angle, with eyewitness interviews, police statements, and a haunting history going back decades. We also cover the lore of the old hag and its connection to sleep paralysis: nightmare fuel that is more literal than figurative.

No Brain. No Blood. No Organs. The Real Walking Dead: Cotard's Syndrome
Season 1, Episode 27
Show notes
Only a few Small and Medium T-shirts left!
What if you were completely convinced that you were already dead?
In the late 1800s, French neurologist Jules Cotard documented patients who believed they had no organs, no blood, no brain, or even a soul. Some believed they had never existed at all. Others thought they were immortal, eternally damned, or trapped somewhere between life and death.
Today, this rare phenomenon is known as Cotard’s syndrome, AKA the “Walking Corpse” or the “Walking Dead” syndrome.
In this episode of DGSG, we explore the strange and deeply unsettling history of this condition. We’ll hear about people who refused food because they believed they were dead, patients who believed their bodies had disappeared, and the disturbing religious delusions that accompany the syndrome.
We then jump into the modern world of psychiatry and what has been learned about Cotard’s delusion and why some researchers believe these seemingly impossible beliefs might actually be attempts to rationalize profoundly altered experiences of the self and reality.
We’ll also explore modern cases, including first-person accounts, and examine modern treatments such as medication and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Her Dream Became Reality: The Aberfan Disaster
Season 1, Episode 26
Show notes
Only 13 shirts in stock (S,M,L) when this episode went live!
On October 21, 1966, a 111-foot coal-waste spoil tip collapsed on the Welsh village of Aberfan. The slurry engulfed several homes and the Pantglas Junior School, a tragedy that would create a cultural grief lasting decades.
Beyond the tragedy, what shocked many was the number of alleged premonitions about the Aberfan disaster before it happened. One came from 10-year-old Eryl Mai Jones, who told her mother a night before the disaster that she had dreamed of the school being destroyed.
Several more came forward with their unique premonitions of the Aberfan Disaster, to the point that psychiatrist John Barker opened the British Premonitions Bureau. Fully convinced they could use this information to avert future disasters, he and his team began collecting specific predictions before tragic events occurred.
Two people, Kathleen Middleton and Alan Hencher, became the bureau’s “stars” after making astonishing predictions about plane crashes, RFK’s assassination, floods, earthquakes, and disasters involving astronauts. But were all of these legitimate? How much of them were coincidences, results of confirmation bias, or vague guesses? Or is there a hidden truth connected to these premonitions? Some researchers suggest they are very real… but it’s not as paranormal as we might think.

A 7-Foot Clown Lured Two Children Into a Windowless Hut: Sam the Sandown Clown
Season 1, Episode 25
Show notes
Deep in the marshlands of the Isle of Wight, a 7-foot creature with a paper-white face, triangular eyes, and a colorful patchwork costume lured two children to his hut in 1973 — and what happened next became one of Britain's most famous cryptid legends. This is the bizarre story of "Sam the Sandown Clown" (aka All Colors Sam). It all started with a 1973 encounter and its obscure 1978 BUFORA write-up. Then it evolved into a wild string of "return" sightings through the 1980s, where Sam allegedly predicted real-world events. And finally, to a 2025 update that reignited the legend online. We trace that sudden shift in folklore, especially after the 2016 Clown Panic, while unpacking the psychology and history behind coulrophobia (the fear of clowns), and explore cryptid theories ranging from interdimensional beings, Isle of Wight Festival drifters, and a Ringo Starr prank gone wrong.

They Called Her a ‘Chemical Weapon.’ No One Could Explain It: Gloria Ramirez
Season 1, Episode 24
Show notes
A 31-year-old mother is rushed into Riverside Hospital. The staff is alarmed by unusual smells and an oily sheen found on her body. Within minutes, nurses and doctors collapse to the floor, sending the entire ER into a frenzy. The entire floor is evacuated during one of the strangest and most-disputed medical mysteries of the modern era.
This is the unexplained case of Gloria Ramirez, a woman labeled as “the Toxic Lady,” after officials tried to explain what happened in the hospital that night by suggesting that her body was somehow producing a chemical weapon. Other professionals claimed mass hysteria. Yet the family claimed that the hospital was trying to cover up a documented history of toxic gas violations in the hospital.
Three delayed autopsies, sexism in healthcare, suspicious violations by the hospital, and conflicting eyewitness accounts created the most complex mystery of the 90s.

They Ate Raw Mystery Meat That Fell from the Sky: The Kentucky Meat Shower
Season 1, Episode 21
Show notes
Chunks of bloody flesh rained down from a clear blue sky across the Crouch family farm on March 3rd, 1876. A “wagonload of meat” covered an area the size of a football field in Bath County, Kentucky. Rebecca Crouch thought it was an omen, foretelling the violent fate of her husband and son who had gone into town that day. Others thought it was a sign from God and that the meat had supernatural powers.
Word spread, and some curious neighbors tasted and even ate the meat out of curiosity. Soon, the New York Herald picked up the story, initiating an investigation that has lasted over a century. Theories suggested the viscera was possibly horse lung, human infant flesh, frog spawn, or vulture vomit. But what caused it to appear from a clear blue sky? In the bizarre world of fafrotskies and objects falling from nowhere, can this paranormal phenomenon that plagued Kentucky ever truly be explained?

A Dead Man's Prank Sparked a $10 Million Baby-Making Race
Season 1, Episode 20
Show notes
A life-changing amount of money was on the line, as a dead man's prank led to a “race” to see who could have the most babies in 10 years.
In 1926, eccentric Toronto millionaire Charles Vance Millar left behind a bizarre will. His final clause was the strangest of all: his entire fortune would go to the Toronto woman who gave birth to the most children in the next decade. What started as a joke collapsed into one of the strangest, most controversial sagas of the Great Depression, known across Canada as “The Great Stork Derby.”
Many who entered the race were from poor, immigrant, and working-class families. Threats of extortion, kidnapping attempts, personal tragedies, lawsuits, racism, classism, and an invasive media circus followed them around for years. And amidst the chaos, as it turns out, life 100 years ago wasn’t all that different from today: the derby uncovered deep-seated xenophobia, eugenics-driven backlash, religious oppression, and courtroom battles over what legally counted as a child.

35 Calls from a Dead Man's Phone
Show notes
In 2008, Charles Peck died in the wreckage of the deadliest train crash in Metrolink history in Los Angeles. But over the next 11 hours, his cell phone called his family and fiancée 35 times. His phone was never recovered. The calls were never explained.
Phone Calls from the Dead is a well-documented category of After-Death Communication, and they're experienced by people from all walks of life.
The writer Dean Koontz once received a warning call from his dead mother that may have saved his life. An elderly couple once had a 30-minute conversation with their old friend who had already been dead for hours. And a French sociologist even received a phone call from his dog who had recently passed away. In this episode, we break down the parapsychology behind it all: Survivalist versus Anti-Survivalist theory, the "mind-ghost," and what the actual data says about grief and comfort. And with the rapid changes in technology, like AI avatars, how does this change the way we speak with the dead?

Black Dispatches: The Enslaved People Who Fooled the Confederacy
Season 1, Episode 18
Show notes
These are the stories of enslaved people that history nearly forgot. A network of enslaved men and women became the Union's most valuable spies during the Civil War, known as "Black Dispatches." The Confederacy thought their servants were too "simple" to understand the war happening in front of them. And this oversight cost them greatly.
A servant, Mary Bowser, infiltrated the Confederate President's office. A recently escaped enslaved couple, Dabney and Lucy Ann Walker, turned a laundry line into a cipher hidden in plain sight. And a legend of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, crawled on her stomach through enemy lines to gather intel. She then went on to carry out the first military operation in U.S. history planned and led by a woman, while also freeing hundreds of slaves in a single night.

His Cure for Death: Coconuts and Sunshine: August Engelhardt's Order of the Sun
Season 1, Episode 17
Show notes
Nudism, nature, and coconuts. These were August Engelhardt's favorite things. Shaped by a growing cultural movement, he rejected the norms of mainstream German society and turned toward the natural world. On a remote island in German New Guinea, he set out to build a utopia he called the Order of the Sun, and for over a decade he ate almost nothing but coconuts, believing the fruit could make him immortal. It did the opposite.
Engelhardt isn't alone. Cults have used diet as a tool of control for decades. And even now, in the age of social media, that same mentality has radicalized how we eat more than we'd like to admit...
