Easy Double podcast

Running, Sports

A running podcast hosted by Ryan, Dean and Eoin — three sub-elite runners and training partners based in Perth, Australia / Dublin, Ireland.

Each week we break down the world of distance running — from training, racing and shoe tech to the stories shaping the sport. Along the way we’re joined by elite athletes, coaches and personalities from across the global running scene.

Expect honest conversations, deep dives into performance, a few questionable theories, and plenty of banter from the easy miles.

Serious about running, not too serious about ourselves.

  1. EDP89: Almgren wins NYC Marathon on DEBUT?! / Ciara Mageean Tribute / Noosa Bolt

    Show notes

We start off episode 89 paying tribute to Irish running legend Ciara Mcgeean, who sadly lost her battle with cancer early Sunday morning at the young age of 34. Ciara was an inspiration to everyone along with being such a beautiful person inside and out and will be sadly missed amongst everyone.

New York Marathon dominated the agenda with Andreas Almgren storming to victory on his debut with a 2:06:01 while on the womens side Sheila Chepkirui pulls off an upset over Hellen Obiri, and Jess McClain dips her on the line. We break down why this unpaced race was the best marathon to watch all year and also cover the Abbott 5K Dash and Noosa Bolt Results over in Australia.
📺 In YouTube Diaries segment, we dive into Almgren’s “Entering the Unknown Part Two” on Nomio’s channel and explore what’s next for the Swede.

  2. ROAD 2 DUBLIN SEASON FINALE: ft Bri McGhee, David Troy & Will Boyle

    Show notes

Welcome to the final episode of our bi-weekly series The Road To Dublin, where we follow three athletes building toward the Dublin Marathon on October 25th.

We followed three runners who had three very different Dublin Marathon experiences. Bri nails her debut (2:57, national medal). Troy battles stomach issues at 5k as his heart rate hits 215bpm. Will struggles with fuelling and wind on his comeback.

We break down what went right, what went catastrophically wrong, and what's next.

    Enjoy!

  3. Matt Ramsden: Pacing World Records, Olympic Near Misses & Unfinished Business

    Show notes

This week we're joined by one of Australia's finest runners, Matt Ramsden.

Fresh off a 28:31 and a podium finish at the Australian Road Running Championships, Matt joins Ryan and Dean to reflect on a career that's taken him from a promising junior in Perth to the world's biggest stages.

We take a trip down memory lane, from his early battles with Ollie Hoare and Jakob Ingebrigtsen to joining Melbourne Track Club, signing with Nike and pacing Joshua Cheptegei to both his 5,000m and 10,000m world records.

Matt opens up about the circumstances surrounding his Tokyo Olympic non-selection, the Achilles injury that derailed his Paris ambitions, and the perspective he's gained through those setbacks.

We also get a fascinating insight into the realities of professional running contracts, his training philosophy, and how he's now juggling life as an elite athlete, full-time lawyer and head coach of Ram's Running.

With his competitive fire returning and a track 10,000m debut on the horizon at Zatopek, there's plenty more to come from the self-proclaimed (well, Ryan-proclaimed) Starboy of WA running.

    Enjoy the episode!

  4. EDP88: Dublin City Marathon / Jakarta half race recap / Valencia Half

    Show notes

Jakarta Half Marathon saw Dean race in brutal heat, finishing 11th in a stacked international field. Dublin Marathon delivered drama along with 75km/h winds, elite Irish talent battling brutal conditions, and Road to Dublin crew finding out just how unforgiving the marathon can be. Valencia Half served up close finishes and Spanish national record intrigue. Bernie Ten in Tasmania showcased Australia’s domestic depth with Ed Marks dominating and Georgie Gregec running wild.

📰 Running news hits different this week. LA Olympic marathon window opens November 1st with 70 spots (down from 80—still scratching our heads on that one). But the headline: Perez Jepchichir provisionally suspended for EPO. Multiple Olympic and world champion, four-time major winner, world record holder in the half. Caught six weeks before Sydney. We break down what this means for the sport, the systemic issues, and why trust in elite distance running just evaporated.

👊 Double Trouble explores doping culture, agent accountability, and whether East African distance running can be salvaged. It’s heavy, it’s necessary, and it’s honest.

Personal wins: Ryan’s injury scan came back positive (stress response resolved), Dean’s back from Jakarta, and Eoin's soaking up Spanish sun .

  5. EDP87 ft Jake Barraclough / Ran to Japan: The Marathon Monk returns / 216km "down week" / Cross Country is back!

    Show notes

With Dean enjoying another holiday on Rottnest, Ryan and Eoin are joined by the mileage king himself, Jake Barraclough (Ran to Japan), for a bumper episode of Easy Double.

Jake takes us inside life as the Marathon Monk, training alongside some of Japan's fastest runners at ND Soft. We break down his latest 216km training week (a down week, apparently), including 30km runs finished with flat-out kilometre reps, marathon-specific sessions, and the differences between Japanese and Western approaches to training and fuelling.

He also discusses his recent back injury scare, racing plans and preparations for December's Marathon Project, alongside his experience rubbing shoulders with Clayton Young at the Great North Run.

Meanwhile, Eoin kicks off his Irish cross country season with a fourth-place finish at the Autumn Open as he builds towards the National Championships.

Elsewhere, the boys cover the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, Amsterdam and Beijing Marathons, Andreas Almgren's frightening training ahead of his marathon debut in New York, and a listener-submitted Double Trouble tackling one of running's biggest pet hates: discarded gel wrappers on race courses.

Plenty of running chat, questionable accents and big mileage. Enjoy!

  6. Jakarta Running Festival (Gold label HM): Behind the scenes with Race Director - Donny

    Show notes

Jakarta Running Festival: Building Indonesia's Biggest Running Event | Race Director Donny

From 16,500 participants in 2024 to 37,000 in 2026, the Jakarta Running Festival has quickly established itself as one of Southeast Asia's premier running events, becoming Indonesia's first World Athletics Gold Label race in the process.

With Dean heading over to compete in the elite half marathon and Raf Baugh taking on commentary duties for the international broadcast, Ryan and Dean sit down with Race Director Donny to learn more about the event's remarkable rise.

We get a fascinating insight into what goes on behind the scenes of organising a major international running event, from shutting down the streets of one of the world's busiest cities to attracting world-class athletes and managing the challenges of racing in Jakarta's notorious heat and humidity.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    •

How the Jakarta Running Festival has grown to 37,000 participants in just three years.

    •

The journey to becoming Indonesia's first World Athletics Gold Label event.

    •

Building a world-class elite field, including multiple sub-60-minute half marathoners.

    •

Prize money, athlete recruitment and the commercial realities of organising major running events.

    •

The challenges of racing in 24–26°C temperatures with high humidity.

    •

Course design, road closures and the logistics of delivering a two-day running festival.

    •

The explosion of running participation across Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

    •

Jakarta's ambitions for the future and what Australian events, particularly Perth, could learn from its success.

Plus, we find out what Dean can expect on race day, how Raf landed the commentary gig, and whether Donny could one day bring his race-directing expertise to Perth!

A great conversation for anyone interested in the growth of running, the business behind major events, and what it takes to create a world-class race experience.

  7. EDP86: Perth Marathon & 10km race recap / Kipchoge dominates down under / New AUS record in Chicago

    Show notes

What a week of marathon running and no need to fear if you missed any of it as we have you covered.

Perth Running Festival brought the goods with Dominic Ngenu’s strong solo win in the marathon, Dean racing hard in the 10K and finishing third, and impressive times across the board.

Melbourne Marathon delivered the spectacle, Kipchoge doing Kipchoge things, Tommy De Canto showing experience and running a PB, and Jimmy Whelan learning the hard way that 2:08 ambitions on debut don’t translate.

Chicago saw Clayton Young’s gutsy come-from-behind American record, Charles Hicks right there hunting, and the women’s race owned by Izzy Bat-doyle smashing the Australian/Oceania record in 2:20:38.

📰 In running news, the stories were everywhere. Perth’s got problems to fix, no kilometer markers on course, missing elite drinks, and a few questions about social media strategy. But the depth of Australian marathon running is genuinely unhinged. Seth O’Donnell solo 61:20 in the half. Nicola Sheridan from Ireland flying a 2:29 after switching to Sydney. The domestic talent pool is ridiculous.

📺 YouTube Diaries gets a big one this week. Marcus Malone dropped a 50-minute documentary called Ordinary Excellence, the Grant Fisher story. Long-form content done properly, childhood, college, coaching relationships, build-up to New York. It’s storytelling, not highlight reels. Shout to Joey Bowden for the tip-off.

👊 Double Trouble stays light as Ryan gets some grief!

    Plenty in this one. Enjoy!

  9. EDP85: Dean runs 14:46 / Perth Running Festival ft Elite Athlete Coordinator Sam Maxwell

    Show notes

A big one this week as we’re joined by Sam Maxwell — Managing Director of Emageo Group and Elite Athlete Coordinator for the Perth Running Festival — ahead of race weekend in Perth.

Sam takes us behind the scenes of building an elite field: recruiting international athletes, appearance fees and prize money, pacemakers, visas, anti-doping and the challenge of growing Perth into a genuinely world-class marathon. We preview Sunday’s races, unpack the headline names coming to WA and hear about the longer-term ambitions for the event.

Then it’s back to regular Easy Double business.

Dean is FINALLY back racing, opening his season with a solo 14:46 5,000m — although he very nearly didn’t make the start line. We break down his race, the return to spikes and what it means ahead of another hit-out at the Perth Running Festival this weekend.

Elsewhere, we cover Jakob’s home-town RunFest, Manchester and Cardiff Half results, the latest running news, Nike dropping THREE new racing shoes — the SwooshFly, Alphafly 4 and Apex — and London Marathon’s move to a two-day event.

    Plenty in this one. Enjoy!

  10. EDP 84: Berlin Marathon / Eoins Race Recap

    Show notes

Berlin Marathon brought the drama as Tigst Assefa was looking to break the femle marathon world record before an achilles injury derailed her in the final 2km, finishing 2:11:04 and straight into surgery. Guye Adola floated to victory looking impossibly smooth, and Jake Smith grabbed a massive lifetime best.

In Ireland Eoin was back racing with a 5K road race in Dublin, building toward his November goal.

📰 In running news Jack Rainier looks to DNS Melbourne marathon while the shoe wars heating up with Mizuno's 96-gram hyper warp threatening to either revolutionise or blow away in the wind. Vinny Strava (Vinnie Maori) is doing genuinely unhinged marathon prep for Chicago with 40+ mile days at marathon pace, double thresholds on treadmills. The man's a follow.

📺 YouTube diaries are everywhere now. Nomio's dropping training content, Clayton Young's got new ones, Graham Blanks showing his process. The transparency's brilliant.

👊 Double Trouble goes rogue as we debate what belongs on Strava (spoiler: zoo walks with 19 animal photos are acceptable if they commit hard enough), and Dean's got a story about riding a flat-tired bike in jeans three pints deep to make an interview with Cam on time.

  13. EDP83: World Road Running Champs / ATHLOS / Irish Life Dublin Half Marathon

    Show notes

Copenhagen's World Road Running Championships and the Atlos women's meet both served up quality racing — with Almgren's half marathon European record and Jakob collapsing in a starfish the headline moments while Keely Hodgkinson steals the show in London.

📰 In running news ON's somehow pulled Mbappe away from Nike. Curtis Marshall's whispers about getting Mondo to Perth. The AlphaFly 4 finally landed — and it looks suspiciously like the 3. Jack Rainier's DNF in Copenhagen raising questions about Melbourne's chances.

We've also got YouTube diaries on the agenda, with Conner Mantz and Andres Almgren linking up.

👊 Plus our Double Trouble segment gets teeth into the big questions: are road racing tactics broken? Does pushing from the front even work anymore?

  14. EDP82: World Ultimate Championships - Jakob wins another 5000m, Kazimierska's Perfect Peak, Kerr is untouchable, Sedjati dethrones Wanyonyi

    Season 1, Episode 82

    Show notes

Episode 82 is here and the inaugural World Ultimate Championships delivered.

The boys break down a massive three days of racing in Budapest, with huge prize money, stacked fields and some of the best championship-style racing we’ve seen all year.

👑 Jakob is back — Jakob Ingebrigtsen takes down a loaded 5000m field, closing in 12.6 for the final 100m to beat Cole Hocker and an army of Americans. We discuss how the race played out, why none of us picked him and whether we underestimated just how dangerous Jakob remains over 5K.

💰 World Ultimate Championships — Claudia Kazimierska continues an incredible end to the season, Audrey Werro takes another huge 800m win, Gudaf Tsegay’s rivals are caught sleeping in the women’s 5000m and the men’s 800m produces another chaotic finish. We also give our verdict on the new championship format, the enormous prize money, qualification system and whether World Athletics has finally landed on something that works.

🇦🇺 Cam Myers hypothetical season continues — after his incredible end to the year, we ask whether Cam could have mixed it with Jakob and Hocker in that 5000m final.

🗽 Fifth Avenue Mile — Marco Langon takes a huge win in New York in 3:45, Adam Spencer lands on the podium and Gemma Reekie flies to a course record in the women’s race.

🚴 70.3 World Championships — Dean takes us briefly into the dark side as the Norwegian Method boys Christian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden feature in another ridiculous triathlon battle.

🇮🇪 Irish racing — Eoin takes us through Ratoath and Charleville Half Marathons as Dublin Marathon preparations begin to get serious, including an impressive first half marathon from Road to Dublin’s Bri.

🇬🇧 Great North Run — one of the biggest half marathons in the world delivers another deep field, with plenty of familiar names further down the results.

Plus Ryan moves approximately 200 metres across East Perth, wheels a wine fridge down the street while carrying cycling shoes, Dean discovers every recovery contraption known to man, Eoin destroys himself doing sprint drills, and the usual Easy Double fact-checking goes about as well as expected.

  15. EDP81: Cam Myers is Diamond League Champion!! / Jakob calls everyone COWARDS / Werro & Wanyonyi win again

    Season 1, Episode 81

    Show notes

The Diamond League Final in Brussels was not without any drama.

Cam Myers takes arguably the biggest win of his career in a stacked 1500m final, outkicking some of the biggest names in the world — before Jakob Ingebrigtsen lets rip post-race and labels his rivals “cowards”. We break down the race, the pacing controversy and the fallout that followed.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Wanyonyi continues his dominance over 800m, the women’s 5000m produces some seriously quick Australian performances, Jess Hull adds another 3:54 to the collection, and Femke Bol’s reported 4:20/km threshold pace leaves us questioning everything we know about running.

Away from Brussels, the Australian road mile record goes down in Germany, Clayton Young publicly announces his plan to attack the American marathon record in Chicago, and two more athletes find themselves on the wrong side of anti-doping.

And to finish, Double Trouble returns. Record ratification gets a well-deserved grilling before Ryan ventures into considerably more dangerous territory with a take that might have him checking the Instagram comments with one eye closed…

  19. EDP79: Eoin's Irish debut / Lausanne & Silesia Diamond League's / Antrim Coast / Australian National XC

    Show notes

Eoin's Irish debut: 14:01 in Antrim, a HALF MARATHON WORLD RECORD & Diamond League madness

It's a huge episode of Easy Double this week as Eoin returns from the Antrim Coast 5K after pulling on the Irish vest for the first time—and delivering a massive performance.

We get the full story behind his 14:01 run, from the build-up and race-day routine to mixing it with an international field, closing in 2:43 for the final kilometre and then immediately being whisked away for his first-ever doping control.

We break down all of that and plenty more from another massive week in the running world, including:

    •

🇮🇪 Eoin's Irish debut — the emotions of representing Ireland, how the race unfolded and just how close he came to breaking 14 minutes.

    •

🧪 Inside doping control — Eoin reveals exactly what happened after being selected for testing immediately after the finish.

    •

🥤 Bicarb, beetroot, Nomio & caffeine — Eoin talks through his complete pre-race protocol and we discuss how much difference the "one percenters" actually make.

    •

🌍 A ridiculous new half marathon world record — Yomif Kejelcha runs an astonishing 56:51 in Argentina, including a largely solo second half and a negative split.

    •

💎 Diamond League action from Lausanne & Silesia — Femke Bol's incredible transition to the 800m continues, Emmanuel Wanyonyi delivers again and the world's best distance runners battle it out as the season reaches its business end.

    •

🇦🇺 Australian National Cross Country Championships — we break down the brutal conditions, the standout performances and the athletes who impressed us most.

    •

👶 Plus, we try to put an incredible 17:49 5K from a 10-year-old listener's son into some kind of context.

It's a long one—but there was simply too much happening in the running world to leave anything out.
