82. Name it and Claim It: The History of Prosperity Gospel
Show notes
On October 20 in Conroe, Texas, a pastor laid hands on Ken Paxton and prayed that God would "give him favor with voters." Two days later a dozen Catholic bishops were filmed praying over Donald Trump in the Oval Office with Paula White-Cain standing behind the chair. Two weeks before that, Jim Bakker died. This episode traces the idea underneath all three: that success is God's verdict on a man.
It starts with a clockmaker in Belfast, Maine, in 1838. Phineas Quimby decided disease was an error of belief, his patient Mary Baker Eddy turned that into Christian Science, and a fired editor named Emma Curtis Hopkins turned it into New Thought, ordaining twenty women in her first class in 1889 and training the founders of Unity, Divine Science, and Religious Science. Then the men moved in. Ralph Waldo Trine, Napoleon Hill (whose Carnegie meeting no archive can find), Bruce Barton's Jesus as "the founder of modern business," and Norman Vincent Peale, who married Donald and Ivana Trump in 1977 and whom Trump still calls his teacher.
Alongside it, the gospel of wealth: Russell Conwell's "it is your duty to get rich," delivered 6,152 times. The frontier panic of Turner and Roosevelt, the Men and Religion Forward Movement of 1911, and Billy Sunday's war on "effeminate" Christianity, all arriving as women organized to vote. Fundamentalism, paid for by Union Oil's Lyman Stewart. And E. W. Kenyon, who learned mind-cure at a Boston elocution school and passed it, word for word, to Kenneth Hagin of McKinney, Texas, Paxton's hometown. From Hagin: Copeland, seed-faith, Osteen, Paula White, and a 2006 poll in which 61 percent of American Christians said God wants people to be rich.

80. Gather Your Gossips!
Show notes
The word “gossip” started out as something sacred. In Old English it was godsibb, literally “God-sibling,” the name for a godparent or anyone who stood with you at a baptism and became spiritual kin. By the Middle Ages the meaning had loosened to cover any close friend or companion, and in particular the circle of women who gathered in the birthing room to help a mother through labor. Those long hours of waiting were filled with talk, and the “gossips” became known as much for their conversation as for their support.
Men, fearful and suspicious of women in community without men supervising began to demonize women gathering publicly or speaking to each other. Male writers of the 1500s and 1600s sneered at “gossips” as idle, chattering women, and by the 1800s the verb “to gossip” meant exactly what it does today. It was uniquely WOMAN sin and was built to isolate a woman from network. Then... they added it to the Bible.

79. The Book You Didn't Know You Know- The Book (s) of Enoch
Show notes
In April a congresswoman pinned "Read the book of Enoch" to the top of her feed, and a cable host told America the government made a deal with demons for the bomb. They're pointing at a real book. First Enoch is older than every document in the New Testament, quoted as prophecy by the letter of Jude, and read as scripture by the people who wrote the Gospels. It's where the Christian ideas of demons, a hell of fire, the archangel Michael with his chain, the seven archangels, Lucifer's fall from pride, and the Nephilim actually come from, and almost none of that is in the Bible you were handed in Sunday school.

78. The Delta- How Can Men Actually Heal and How Can Women Be Safe? with Jeff Zacharski and Adam Pearce
Show notes
More of Jeff and Adams work on thedelta.men
We all see how the manosphere profits off the loneliness, rage and misogyny of young men. There are 100 coaches a day you can scroll past telling a man how he can be a true "alpha dude bro". ICK. Profiting off pain and rage with no intention of actually helping.
But there are men who are actually trying to help men heal, help them learn to build community and develop connection- what does that look like? What are those coaches seeing in men that needs to change? I brought in the coaches from the Delta to talk about exactly that. I have personal experience with them cause I've watched them transform my brothers life.
Everybody in our world is hurting, we live in such an unnatural disconnected society. Can men heal enough that women can feel safe? Can there be common ground But what about the men who haven't gone to the manosphere but don't know where to go? Who actually want to do better and realize that something is missing? The world doesn't change until we do.
