    Episode 14

    Show notes

For more than 200 years, the legend of the Bell Witch has haunted the hills of Adams, Tennessee. What began as strange noises and unexplained disturbances on the Bell family farm would grow into one of America’s most enduring supernatural legends.

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, we’re heading to Tennessee to explore the story of the Bell family, the mysterious entity that seemed determined to torment them, and the chilling events that turned a local tale into a piece of American folklore. From unexplained voices and physical attacks to the strange personality of the entity itself, the Bell Witch legend has no shortage of bizarre details.

We’ll explore the history, the stories, the skeptics, and the lasting cultural impact of Tennessee’s Most Infamous Haunting. Along the way, we’ll look at how the Bell Witch became more than a local ghost story and why people are still talking about it two centuries later.

    Episode 13

    Show notes

In the mountains of North Georgia, some family feuds leave behind more than hurt feelings. Along the banks of the Tilley Bend, a story has lingered for generations, one involving two families, a bitter dispute, and a woman whose name became tangled in local legend.

This week on Front Porch Mysteries, we’re telling the story of Elizabeth Bradley and the legend of the Tilley Bend Witch. But was Elizabeth really a witch, or was she a woman caught in the middle of a feud that grew into something far stranger with every retelling? As we follow the stories surrounding the Tilley and Stanley families, we’ll explore how an old family conflict became part of the folklore of the North Georgia mountains.

Pull up a chair and settle in, because this is a tale of mountain history, family grudges, and a legend that has refused to fade away.

  6. Haunted Roads…Appalachia’s Creepiest Curves

    Episode 11

    Show notes

Some Appalachian roads are beautiful by day and unsettling after dark. In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley take a drive through a collection of roads, bridges, tunnels, and mountain routes surrounded by stories of ghosts, unexplained lights, cryptids, tragic deaths, and local legends.

From the disappearing bridges of Seven Bridges Road and the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights to Helen’s Bridge, Mamie Thurman’s tragic story, the Pity Pat, Sensabaugh Tunnel, Lydia’s Bridge, and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, these are the kinds of places where history and folklore have become tangled together.

Alex also shares a personal story from a late-night drive near Clayton, Georgia, and finally returns to one of his favorite Appalachian legends: the red-haired woman said to appear along the Ocoee River Road and, in some versions, show up in your back seat.

So keep your eyes on the road, don't stop where the legends tell you to stop, and pull up a chair for another Front Porch Mystery.

  7. Slenderman…Fiction Turned Tragedy

    Episode 10

    Show notes

In 2009, a strange figure appeared on the internet. He was impossibly tall, dressed in a black suit, and had no face.

That figure became known as Slenderman.

What started as a fictional character created for an internet Photoshop contest quickly grew into something much bigger. Creepypasta stories, YouTube series like Marble Hornets, video games, fan theories, and thousands of new stories turned Slenderman into one of the most recognizable fictional monsters of the internet age.

But in 2014, the story took a horrifying turn when two 12-year-old girls in Wisconsin attacked their classmate, believing they needed to become Slenderman's proxies.

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, we go back to the beginning of Slenderman, talk about how the mythology grew across the early internet, and explore the tragic Wisconsin case that forced people to ask where the line between fiction and reality can disappear.

It's a story about internet folklore, childhood, influence, mental illness, and what can happen when something created as fiction becomes real to someone who believes it.

    Episode 9

    Show notes

    Croatoan…The Lost Colony of Roanoke

What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke?

In 1587, more than 100 English colonists arrived on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina, hoping to establish one of England’s first permanent settlements in the New World. But when Governor John White returned three years later, the entire colony had vanished.

There were no bodies. No obvious signs of a battle. No clear explanation for where the men, women, and children had gone.

There was only one haunting clue: the word CROATOAN carved into a wooden post.

Nearly 440 years later, the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists remains one of America’s most famous historical mysteries. Did the colonists relocate to another settlement? Did they join a nearby Indigenous community? Were they killed? Or have we misunderstood the clues left behind at Roanoke Island?

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, we explore the history of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the mysterious Croatoan clue, Governor John White’s return to the abandoned settlement, the theories surrounding the missing colonists, and the discoveries that have continued to reshape what we think happened in 1587.

From the first arrival of the colonists to the disappearance that made Roanoke legendary, we’re digging into one of America’s oldest and most enduring mysteries.

Was Roanoke really a mystery… or have we been looking in the wrong place?

    Altamaha-ha…Georgia’s Own River Monster

Deep in the winding waters of Georgia’s Altamaha River, something has been lurking for generations.

Locals have told stories of a strange creature hiding beneath the surface, described as a massive, serpentine animal with a long body, powerful jaws, and a prehistoric appearance. Some call it the Altamaha-ha, Georgia’s very own river monster.

But where did the legend come from? Are the stories simply folklore passed down through generations, or could there actually be something unusual living in one of Georgia’s largest and most mysterious rivers?

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley head into the legend of the Altamaha-ha to explore the sightings, the history, the theories, and the strange stories surrounding Georgia’s most famous aquatic cryptid.

From old encounters along the Altamaha River to modern-day speculation about what might be hiding beneath the water, we’re asking the question:

  10. Antarctica…What Do the Penguins Know?

    Episode 7

    Show notes

What if one of the most mysterious places on Earth isn't hidden in a jungle or at the bottom of the ocean, but beneath two miles of Antarctic ice?

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, windiest, and one of the least explored places on our planet. It is a continent with no permanent residents, vast areas that remain virtually untouched, mountains and lakes hidden beneath the ice, and long periods of complete darkness. And because so little of Antarctica can be experienced firsthand, it has become the perfect blank canvas for some truly wild theories.

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley pull up a chair and head to the bottom of the world to explore some of the strangest mysteries and conspiracy theories surrounding Antarctica.

We start with the facts: the history of Antarctica, the Antarctic Treaty, the restrictions surrounding the continent, and the real discoveries that make Antarctica fascinating all on their own. Then things start getting a little more mysterious.

We dive into Operation Highjump, the massive U.S. Navy expedition led by Admiral Richard Byrd after World War II, and the theories that claim the expedition encountered something it wasn't supposed to find. We also explore the infamous alleged Byrd diary and its connection to Hollow Earth theories, including stories of hidden worlds, advanced civilizations, prehistoric animals, and mysterious beings beneath the Antarctic ice.

Then there's Nazi Germany's Antarctic expedition and the legend of Base 211, a supposed underground facility where Nazi officials allegedly continued their work after World War II. From there, we go even deeper, looking at the real lakes and mountain ranges hidden beneath Antarctica and the conspiracy theories that claim they could be evidence of ancient civilizations or massive underground cities.

And if that isn't strange enough, we'll take a look at the mysterious Antarctic pyramids, the infamous ice wall theory, supposed extraterrestrial bases beneath the ice, and the centuries-old Piri Reis map, which some believe may depict Antarctica before its official discovery.

But where does fact end and conspiracy begin?

Throughout the episode, we're not here to tell you what to believe. We're here to look at the facts, examine the theories, and explore why these stories have captured people's imaginations for so long.

Because Antarctica may simply be a frozen wilderness at the bottom of the world.

Or maybe the real mystery isn't what we know about Antarctica...

It's what we haven't discovered yet.

Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and join us on the porch for Antarctica...What Do the Penguins Know?

    Episode 6

    Show notes

In October 1972, a plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby team, their friends, and family crashed high in the Andes Mountains.

Of the 45 people on board, only 16 would eventually make it home.

But surviving the crash was only the beginning.

For 72 days, the survivors battled freezing temperatures, avalanches, starvation, isolation, and conditions that pushed them to the absolute limits of human endurance. With rescue efforts eventually called off, they were left with an impossible choice: find a way out themselves, or die in the mountains.

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, we head into the Andes to uncover what happened after the crash, how the survivors managed to stay alive, and the desperate decisions they were forced to make along the way.

  13. The Skinwalker...The Culture & Legend

    Episode 5

    Show notes

This week on Front Porch Mysteries, we’re talking about skinwalkers, but maybe not the version you’ve heard about on TikTok.

The skinwalker comes from Navajo tradition, where the subject carries a much deeper and darker meaning than the shapeshifting creature that has taken over modern horror stories. So before we get anywhere near creepy encounters, glowing eyes, or something running alongside a car in the middle of the night, we wanted to start where this story actually comes from.

We’ll respectfully explore the Navajo origins of the skinwalker, what can and can’t really be said about the tradition, and the disturbing 1987 murder of Sarah Saganitso, a case in which accusations and fears surrounding skinwalkers became part of the story.

Then we’re heading down the internet rabbit hole.

How did a specific Navajo belief evolve into a catch-all name for almost anything strange lurking in the woods? Where does Skinwalker Ranch fit into all of this? And how much of what we call a “skinwalker story” today actually has anything to do with the original tradition?

From traditional beliefs and a real-life murder case to Skinwalker Ranch, Reddit threads, viral videos, and modern cryptid culture, we’re following the strange evolution of one of the internet’s most recognizable legends.

    Episode 4

    Show notes

What if dolphins are a whole lot smarter and stranger than we give them credit for?

In this episode, we dive headfirst into one of the weirdest rabbit holes we’ve found yet: dolphin conspiracy theories.

It starts with Gerald, a dolphin who allegedly kidnapped a man and forced him to help build an underwater operation. At least, that’s what the man claimed. And somehow, Gerald is only the beginning.

From experiments and military programs to bizarre claims about dolphin intelligence, communication, and what they might actually be capable of, we’re sorting through the real history, the rumors, and the theories that have made dolphins the center of some truly wild conspiracies.

How much of it is true? How much has grown through years of retelling? And after everything we found, should we really be trusting dolphins as much as we do?

Gerald has some explaining to do.

  16. Lake Lanier...Something Ain't Right

    Episode 3

    Show notes

Lake Lanier has a reputation unlike any other body of water in America. Beneath its calm surface lies a flooded landscape of old homes, roads, bridges, cemeteries, and entire communities. Over the decades, hundreds of people have lost their lives there, giving rise to stories of curses, ghosts, and unexplained encounters.

In this episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley dive into the history behind Georgia's most infamous lake. We separate fact from folklore as we explore why Lake Lanier was created, the communities that disappeared beneath the water, the legend of the Lady of the Lake, and the unsettling mysteries that continue to fuel its haunted reputation. Is the lake truly cursed, or is there a more practical explanation for its tragic history?

Pull up a chair... but maybe think twice before diving in.

    Show notes

    Episode 1: Mr. Mothman…Just a Wholesome Feller?

A towering winged creature. Glowing red eyes. A quiet town that would never be the same.

In November 1966, strange sightings began around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. What started as a terrifying encounter quickly became one of America’s most enduring paranormal mysteries. Was the Mothman a cryptid, a warning of impending disaster, a government experiment, or simply a case of mass hysteria?

In this premiere episode of Front Porch Mysteries, Alex and Ashley pull up a chair to explore the history, eyewitness accounts, conspiracy theories, and possible explanations behind the legend of the Mothman. From the abandoned TNT Area to the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge, we separate documented facts from decades of folklore and speculation.

So grab a seat, keep the porch light on, and decide for yourself…

Was Mothman a monster, a messenger, or something else entirely?

  18. Appalachia…Just Follow the Rules Bonus

    Episode 2

    Show notes

Front Porch Special: Appalachia…Just Follow the Rules

As a special bonus episode of Front Porch Mysteries, we’re stepping away from our usual deep dive to explore one of the most chilling collections of folklore ever passed down through the mountains.

In Appalachia, there are rules everyone seems to know… but no one can explain.

Don’t whistle after dark. Don’t answer when something calls your name from the woods. If the forest suddenly goes silent, leave. And whatever you do… don’t look into the tree line.

For generations, these warnings have been shared from porch to porch and family to family, not as stories, but as advice. Whether they’re rooted in superstition, survival, or something far stranger is up to you to decide.

Pull up a chair as we explore the eerie rules, legends, and mountain folklore that have made Appalachia one of the most mysterious places in America.

Because around here… sometimes the safest thing you can do is just follow the rules.
