This week we’re easing into the back half of autumn with a little less spooky, and a little more whimsy. I’m bringing you something a little different; something I have been interested in looking into since I first heard the name. Today I’ll be telling you the story of a (sometimes) evil witch; a fairytale of sorts describing a strange and eerie figure known as Baba Yaga.
This all comes from Slavic Folklore and, like most folklore, there are many variations on how the story should be told and all of the details that make up this nightmare fuel for Slavic children. But, like we’ve mentioned several times before, I am of the belief that all stories, fairy tales, and folklore have some kernel of truth in them. Does this mean that there really is/was an old witch living in a strange house? Maybe, maybe not. But you’ll find by the end of this episode that aspects of the story come from somewhere, be it ancient tradition and religious practices, the harsh realities of living in even harsher environments, or the ways in which a group of people taught safety and morality to their young.

Late on the night of June 9, 1912, Josiah B. Moore, his wife Sarah, their 6 young children, and 2 of their daughters friends, were savagely murdered in the Moore home in Villisca, Iowa. The murder sent shockwaves through the small town and nation for many years to come, and unfortunately is still unsolved. The home where this horrific act took place, still stands in Villisca today, but it’s known for much more than just the unimaginable crime; it’s also the site of an incredible amount of paranormal activity and draws in visitors interested in the macabre and supernatural from all over the world. You can go for a daytime visit, or even stay overnight if you dare. The US has more than 50 million acres designated and protected for our national parks. You’ll find all sorts of wildlife and beauty within those boundaries and families flock to them year round. But there are some who believe these parks hold other things deep inside. There are secrets kept amongst those trees and waterfalls. There are some who believe in cryptids and the fae calling these parks home, others think there may be portals to other places, dimensions, that lie inside, waiting for some unsuspecting passerby to make contact. There are many people who happen upon something they just can’t explain while hiking the most desolate areas of our world – like these mysterious stairs in the woods. These steps stand tall, surrounded by nature, completely out of place, and look as though they lead to nowhere. The people who work, day in and day out, within those parks have stories, and luckily for us, some of them turn to Reddit. Today we’ll be discussing one of those secrets kept until about 11 years ago: the string of stories that started the discussions into the phenomenon we all know today as the staircases in the woods.
