Going Deeper: Sex Ed Was Just The Beginning

Health & Fitness, Sexuality

I’m Dr. Sue, a sexologist, health educator, and author who spends a lot of time talking about things we don’t always talk about.

Because honestly? Sex ed was never the end of the story. For a lot of us, it was barely the beginning.

Our bodies, relationships, health, pleasure, and all the messy stuff that comes with being human are more complicated than anything we learned in health class. And so often, we have questions we never learned how to ask.

I’ll be joined by experts, other voices, or sometimes it’ll just be me, going deeper into the questions that make being human so interesting.

  1. Maybe “Normal” Isn’t the Point

    Show notes

We spend a lot of time wondering if what we do sexually is “normal.” But what does normal even mean? In this episode, I’m looking at how culture, other people, and even research shape our ideas about what’s normal—and why common doesn’t necessarily mean healthy. Maybe the better questions are: Are you comfortable? Are you happy? Is this healthy? And is this something you actually want?

  2. We Learned About Sex. Sort Of.

    Show notes

In this episode of Going Deeper, Dr. Sue looks at how sex education evolved beginning in the 1980s, when HIV/AIDS became a major force keeping sex ed in schools. The problem? Much of that education was built around fear: death, disease, dysfunction, and unintended pregnancy.

We’ll talk about what was missing—anatomy, pleasure, healthy relationships, consent, communication, and the skills people actually need to navigate sex and relationships.

And those gaps don’t disappear when you graduate. Many adults still struggle to talk about sex with their partners, children, or aging parents.

  3. Why It’s Easier to Have Sex Than Talk About It

    Show notes

Why is it so hard to talk about sex? We may know how to havesex, but most of us were never really taught how to talk about it. In this episode, I talk about the language we learned (or didn't), what we saw modeled for us, and why conversations about sex can still feel so awkward as adults. We’ll also talk about how to find the language that works for you and how to get a little more comfortable having these conversations.

  4. Still Unzipping

    Show notes

Welcome to Going Deeper! In this first episode, I’m talking about why I wanted to keep the conversation going—and what I mean when I say sex ed was just the beginning.

If you know me from Unzipping Taboos, you already know that I love talking about the things we don't always talk about. That show is on hiatus, but I wasn't ready to stop the conversation. So Going Deeper is a chance to keep exploring sex, sexuality, relationships, health, and all the questions that come up along the way.

I’ll also share a little about my journey into sexuality education, what we’re often missing when it comes to learning about sex and relationships, and why I think we need better spaces to ask the questions we’re sometimes afraid—or simply never taught—to ask.
