Why You're So Tired and What It Means for Your Bones | Jenny Tufenkian
Season 1, Episode 378
Show notes
Are you always tired even after a full night's sleep? Do you rely on coffee or sugar to get through the day, or put off activities because you just don't have the energy?

Understanding what's behind your fatigue can be an important first step toward feeling better and supporting your bones.

Should You Use HRT for Your Bones? | Dr. Felice Gersh
Season 1, Episode 375
Show notes
Fear and confusion have surrounded hormone therapy for decades, especially since the Women's Health Initiative. But what really happened, what did the research show, and how did those findings shape the way women think about hormones today?
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Felice Gersh, a double board-certified OB-GYN and integrative medicine physician, to discuss the history, the research, and the ongoing debate around hormone therapy and bone health.
We talk about why estrogen matters for bones, Dr. Gersh's take on what was misunderstood in the Women's Health Initiative, and why she believes progesterone deserves more attention in the bone-health conversation.
We also discuss what women in their 50s and 60s should know, why individualized decision-making matters, and why more research is still needed.
"We want to help people to have healthy longevity. And that means when nature takes us down the wrong path, we try to do something to make it better. If you don't believe that medicine is about defying nature, then you don't know what medicine is." ~ Dr. Felice Gersh (on the necessity of medical intervention)

- [09:27] - How the Women's Health Initiative changed HRT

Exercise & Osteoporosis: What Really Works | Lora Giangregorio, PhD
Season 1, Episode 374
Show notes
You want to exercise for stronger bones, but with so much conflicting advice, how do you know what really works? Lift heavy, wear a weighted vest, jump, use vibration platforms, try special bone-building devices...how do you know which advice is supported by research?
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Lora Giangregorio, a bone health and exercise science researcher, to separate the science from the hype. She is a professor and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Bone Health and Exercise Science at the University of Waterloo. She also leads the Bone Health and Exercise Science Lab and serves on the Scientific Advisory Council for Osteoporosis Canada.
We talk about the exercises that have the strongest evidence for preventing falls and fractures. We also tackle balance training, progressive resistance, weighted vests, yoga, vibration platforms, and other popular exercise approaches, and why "lift heavy" isn't the right message for everyone.
Most importantly, you'll learn how to start where you are, progress safely, and become a smarter consumer of bone-health information.
"Standing on one foot at the kitchen sink is not really a comprehensive balance training program. You want to make sure that you include a variety of things." ~ Lora Giangregorio, PhD
In this episode:
[02:28] - The exercise that can help prevent falls and fractures
[04:30] - Why standing on one foot isn't enough for balance
[09:25] - What the research says about preventing bone loss
[15:17] - Why "lift heavy" isn't the right advice for everyone
[21:55] - How to safely introduce impact exercise
[27:05] - The truth about weighted vests and bone density
[33:03] - Are bone-building devices and vibration platforms worth it?
[39:10] - What yoga can and can't do for your bones
[41:29] - How to tell good bone-health information from hype

Osteoporosis in Men: Don't Wait for a Fracture | Dr. Tom Forfa
Season 1, Episode 373
Show notes
When we talk about osteoporosis, we often think about women, but men can develop osteoporosis too. And because it's frequently overlooked, many men don't discover they have a bone-health problem until after a fracture.
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tom Forfa, a medical doctor who was diagnosed with osteoporosis at just 37 after experiencing 13 fractures in 10 years. His experience led him to investigate the underlying factors affecting his bone health and ultimately turn things around.
We talk about why osteoporosis can be missed in men, potential risk factors including low testosterone, certain medications, malabsorption, alcohol, and lifestyle factors. We also discuss exercise, nutrition, bone density testing, bone turnover markers, physical therapy, and how men can be more proactive about their bone health.
I hope this conversation helps you and the men in your life see osteoporosis differently. Don't panic, but don't ignore it. Ask why it happened, get informed, and take action.
"For men, there isn't an intense period of bone loss. It tends to be more gradual. Or for the vast majority, there's an underlying medical condition or a medication that's causing it, and that is often underlooked." ~ Dr. Tom Forfa

Osteoporosis & Heart Disease: Labs to Ask For | Dr. Keith McCormick
Season 1, Episode 369
Show notes
What if osteoporosis and heart disease have more in common than we realize? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Keith McCormick, a leading osteoporosis expert and author of Great Bones, to explore the shared roots of bone loss and cardiovascular disease. We dive into why these two conditions can appear together and what your bloodwork may reveal about what is happening beneath the surface.
Dr. McCormick takes us beyond the standard lab panel and explains why looking at patterns, trends, and hidden correlations matters when trying to understand the root causes of bone loss. We also talk about homocysteine and why this relatively simple test can provide important information about both bone and cardiovascular health.
This conversation is a great reminder that bone health doesn't exist in isolation. Our bones, blood vessels, metabolism, inflammation, and overall health are interconnected. Understanding those connections can give us more information and more opportunities to take proactive steps toward stronger bones and better health.
"Osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease can be comorbidities. You need to stand up for your health and speak with your doctor about these things, and ask for good testing." ~ Dr. Keith McCormick

Brain Defenders: How to Protect Your Brain as You Age With Dr. David Perlmutter
Season 1, Episode 367
Show notes
For so many people, the thought of memory loss or cognitive decline feels frightening. But today's guest shares an empowering message: there is so much we can do through our daily choices to support brain health and reduce risk.
I'm joined by Dr. David Perlmutter, board-certified neurologist, leading brain health expert, and bestselling author of Brain Defenders, to discuss what we can do today to protect our brains as we age.
We explore the important shift in how we understand brain health, looking at the bigger picture of immunometabolism, metabolic health, inflammation, and the environment that influences the brain long before symptoms appear. Dr. Perlmutter explains why habits that support the entire body, including blood sugar balance and reduced inflammation, can also support cognitive health.
He also shares exciting areas of research and reminds us that even small changes can create meaningful improvements over time. Just like we can take steps to support our bones, we can also support our brains through the choices we make every day.
"Your brain's destiny is in your hands. It's based upon the choices that you are going to make every single day. A cure for dementia is not going to be given to you in the form of a medication." ~ Dr. David Perlmutter

Can You Reverse Osteoporosis Naturally? With Dr. Kim Millman
Season 1, Episode 361
Show notes
Can you reverse osteoporosis naturally? This is one of the most common questions I get asked. Today, I'm joined by Dr. Kim Millman as we explore what's truly possible when it comes to bone health. Together, we share what we've seen in clinical practice, what's realistic, and how to set proper expectations when it comes to improving bone density.
We discuss how natural therapies like bioidentical hormones, weight training, and root-cause interventions can meaningfully improve bone health over time. We walk through real case studies, including women who improved bone density through hormone optimization, structured strength training, and correction of underlying issues like hyperparathyroidism. These cases highlight how addressing the root cause can dramatically change outcomes.
This conversation reinforces something I deeply believe: With the right approach, many people can improve bone density, stabilize loss, and significantly reduce fracture risk.
"Medications should be used as a short-term bridge, while we simultaneously work on stabilizing the root causes of bone loss." ~ Dr. Kim Millman
In this episode:
- [03:46] - Extent, timeline, and monitoring results of various therapies
- [07:19] - Three pillars of natural bone building therapies
- [08:55] - Case study: hormone therapy and spine improvement

2026 Osteoporosis Updates: New Research, Estrogen & More With Margie and Dr. Craig Bissinger
Season 1, Episode 359
Show notes
Are you wondering what's new in osteoporosis research for 2026? In this episode, I'm joined by my husband, Dr. Craig Bissinger, as we review the most exciting osteoporosis updates from 2026. We share insights from the Interdisciplinary Symposium on Osteoporosis in Washington, DC, covering everything from new medications and bone-building drugs to the latest research on estrogen therapy and early screening strategies.
We discuss the FDA's new endpoint for drug approval, which could speed up the availability of new medications like the oral version of Forteo. We also review the removal of the estrogen black box warning, showing that for many women, the benefits outweigh the risks, especially for those under 60 or within 10 years of menopause. We also dive into bone turnover markers that track bone building and breakdown in real time, helping you see progress in months rather than years.
Finally, we discuss new screening guidelines, early detection for women, and the importance of interdisciplinary care. Tune in to learn how you can be proactive in protecting and strengthening your bones.
"By changing the criteria for assessing the quality of the drug, they've chosen a different parameter, which is the Bone Mineral Density [BMD]...You're going to have a much more rapid evaluation, and henceforth new drugs will be able to come to the market earlier." ~ Dr. Craig Bissinger

Shungite, EMFs, and Your Bones With Valerie Burke
Season 1, Episode 358
Show notes
Could the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in your environment be affecting your bone health? In this episode, I'm joined by Valerie Burke, also known as the "Shungite Queen," to explore the potential impact of EMFs on bone health and how shungite, a rare carbon-based rock from Russia, may help mitigate those effects.
We discuss the science, history, and properties of shungite, including its molecular structure with fullerenes and its unique interaction with electromagnetic fields. Valerie explains the ways EMFs may adversely affect bone health, including voltage-gated calcium channels, bone marrow interference, thyroid disruption, and decreased melatonin production.
She also walks us through different grades of shungite, how to recognize authentic pieces, and practical tips for using it in daily life, whether as jewelry, desktop pieces, or even infused in water. I also share my own curiosity and personal experiences with keeping shungite near my workspace to create a more grounding and protective environment.
This conversation will help you make informed choices about EMF exposure while exploring innovative ways to support bone health, wellness, and stress reduction.
"Shungite water is another way you can use shungite for your health, for just the fullerenes, the carbon 60, and the detox properties. Elite Shungite sort of energizes the water in a way that nothing else can." ~ Valerie Burke, MSN
In this episode:
- [02:55] - What is shungite? Origins and molecular properties
- [05:34] - How EMFs affect bones: voltage-gated calcium channels
- [08:29] - Bone marrow, thyroid, and melatonin disruption
- [12:06] - Various grades of shungite and how to identify genuine shungite
