Haunted UK Podcast: History, Hauntings and the Unexplained

Documentary, History, Society & Culture

Haunted UK Podcast explores the history, hauntings, folklore, and unexplained events tied to some of the world’s most fascinating places and mysteries.

From ancient castles and forgotten tunnels to chilling paranormal encounters, UFO sightings, mysterious disappearances, and strange local legends, each episode blends atmospheric storytelling with real history, eyewitness testimony, and immersive documentary-style narration.

Through in-depth research, location visits, interviews with historians, paranormal investigators, and members of staff connected to these remarkable places, Haunted UK Podcast uncovers the stories that continue to linger long after the events themselves have passed into history.

Whether standing inside a centuries-old fortress, walking through abandoned underground passageways, or listening to the testimony of someone who experienced something they still can’t explain, every episode asks the same question:

What remains behind in certain places… and why do some stories refuse to disappear?

So if you ever find yourself visiting one of the locations featured in these episodes, pause for a moment and look around carefully.

Because the next unexplained experience… could be yours.

  1. Tamworth Castle - Staffordshire's Most Haunted Historic Site?

    Show notes

In all the interviews I've recorded for this show, nothing has quite matched what one member of staff at Tamworth Castle told me: a full, complete apparition, seen face to face inside the building. In this episode of the Haunted UK Podcast, I sit down with two of Tamworth Castle's own staff, Leigh and Hollie, to explore one of Staffordshire's most historic sites, and the ghost stories that have grown up around it.

Long before the Norman castle that still stands above the town, Tamworth was a seat of power in Anglo-Saxon Mercia. Leigh and Hollie gave me a personal tour of the castle before we sat down to record, then walked me back through it, room by room, once the microphones were on, along with the castle's long-running Black Lady and White Lady legends. Leigh saves the strangest of it for last: two separate sightings, the second a complete, unmistakable apparition unlike anything I've heard in any interview before it.

Hear Leigh and Hollie's full accounts in this episode.

  2. The Midnight Reel - Halloween 1978

    Show notes

The most frightening face in horror is a $1.98 Captain Kirk mask from a magic shop on Hollywood Boulevard, with the eye holes cut wider and the face sprayed white. In the very first episode of The Midnight Reel, Steve from the Haunted UK Podcast and Melissa from Haunted UK Fiction review John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), the film that started the modern slasher.

Before the review, the episode goes behind the scenes of a horror classic made for around $300,000 in about three weeks. Jamie Lee Curtis, in her first feature film, bought Laurie Strode’s whole wardrobe at JC Penney for under $100. Donald Pleasence took the part of Dr Loomis after Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee both turned it down. Nick Castle got $25 a day to play The Shape. Paper autumn leaves were painted and reused in a South Pasadena spring, and Carpenter made one of the most famous theme tunes in film history on synthesisers, with hardly any money.

Then Steve and Melissa give their honest verdict on Michael Myers’ first night home in Haddonfield.

Watch or listen now, leave your own verdict in the comments, and vote in the poll for next month’s film.

  3. Factual Supernatural - EP07 - Bolt Drop

    Show notes

Jonathan Frank Tate spent years in security operations, the military, and private contracting, but it's his time as Warden for Newborough and Llanddwyn on Anglesey that gives this account its setting.

His book, Factual Supernatural, is out now on Amazon, and this episode features one of its accounts exactly as he wrote it, unaltered.

No hole in the ceiling, no vibration, no explanation, just a metal bolt hitting the cabin floor two seconds after Tate dares whatever's out there to prove itself.

    This is Bolt Drop.

Tate's years as Warden meant long nights alone in Newborough and Llanddwyn, working paths shaped more by animals than people, in a forest built over the sand-buried ruins of a medieval royal court.

Watching over film equipment overnight in an isolated welfare cabin deep in the forest, Tate and a friend fall into a conversation about ghosts. His friend believes; Tate doesn't, and says so flatly, then half-jokingly challenges whatever might be listening outside to "do something" if it's really there. The cabin goes unnaturally quiet for a couple of seconds. Then comes a sharp, sudden bang: a metal bolt has landed on the floorboards a few feet away. They check the ceiling above it. It's solid, panelled, with no holes and no loose fittings, and nothing nearby that could have shaken it loose. There's no way to explain how it got there, only the fact that it fell straight down, moments after the challenge was spoken aloud.

  4. Fright Bites - EP14 - Jokes Over & Other Encounters

    Show notes

A recurring childhood nightmare about a huge, fur covered creature chasing him down a hallway ends the one way it never should: three real claw marks appear on his body in the exact place it bit him in the dream. That's the story behind "The Creature in the Hallway," just one of four real listener submissions in this episode of Fright Bites, the Haunted UK Podcast's short, sharp true paranormal series.

Elsewhere in the collection, a woman getting ready in a hotel room in Virginia Water watches a pair of fishnet tights rearrange themselves into an impossible arc after she's already told the room the joke's over, a nurse wakes from a nap on a hospital ward to find something "blacker than black" looming directly over her, and a man returns downstairs to find a cold glass of milk moved, and mysteriously warm, in an empty house.

Four short, unfiltered encounters straight from the show's own listeners, no filler, no distractions. Press play, and see which one stays with you.

  5. Factual Supernatural - EP06 - Chair Spin

No one touches the chair, no one is ever there, but Tate falls asleep in an old chair inside an abandoned caravan deep in the forest, dreams that something unseen is turning it slowly beneath him, and wakes to find it still spinning exactly as it was in the dream. This is Chair Spin.

Tate's years patrolling Newborough and Llanddwyn meant long, solitary hours in a forest that has spent centuries quietly reclaiming everything left inside it, from animal paths to a royal court buried beneath the dunes by ancient storms.

Exhausted after hours of walking before dawn, Tate steps inside an old caravan he had always found unsettling but never entered, and sits down in a swivel office chair that looks strangely well kept compared to everything decaying around it. He falls asleep almost instantly and dreams he is still in the chair, being turned slowly and deliberately by someone standing just out of sight. He tries to plant his feet and stop it, but his body will not respond. Then, in one sudden movement, he is awake, and the chair is still turning, slowing down as though whatever had been pushing it had only just let go. Outside, the forest stays completely silent: no footsteps, no movement, nothing to explain what just happened.

  6. The Witness Files - Case 10 - The Return of Charlie

    Show notes

On the same night an old family friend died in a car crash hundreds of miles away, a teenager staying overnight at that friend's own house in Melbourne, south Derbyshire, watched a silent, jet black figure the exact shape of the man standing in the hallway. In this real Witness Files account, Ash describes an encounter with what may have been a final visit home.

Seventeen at the time, Ash was staying the night at the house Charlie and his wife Amy lent his grandparents every Christmas while they skied in Austria. Walking back from the kitchen late one December night, he found the hallway blocked by a tall, dark, featureless shape wearing what looked exactly like Charlie's coat and flat cap. It didn't answer when he spoke, and when he stepped closer, it vanished into the room beside him, leaving nothing behind.

The next morning, Ash's grandparents delivered the news: Charlie had died in a car crash in Austria the evening before, at almost exactly the moment of the sighting, and his wife was fighting for her life in intensive care.

Hear Ash's full witness statement, and find out how to submit your own story to The Witness Files, in this episode.

  7. Factual Supernatural - EP05 - Mandy

No footsteps, no growl, no chase, just a small, familiar dog trotting happily through the pines at midnight, exactly as she'd always looked, hundreds of miles from the house where she should have been sleeping.

    This is Mandy.

Tate spent years patrolling Newborough and Llanddwyn after dark, along paths worn by animals rather than people, in a landscape where centuries-old storms buried a royal court beneath the dunes.

On a calm, clear night deep in the forest, Tate spots movement among the trees: a small spaniel with reddish fur, moving happily through the undergrowth. He recognises her at once as Mandy, his grandmother's dog, a dog he hadn't seen in months while working in North Wales, hundreds of miles from her home in London. She looks exactly as she always had, relaxed and pleased, moving with total confidence through a forest she has no business being in. She glances back at him once, then carries on between the trees until the dark swallows her completely. The next day, Tate learns that Mandy died peacefully at his grandparents' house in London during the night, at almost exactly the same time he saw her.

  8. Dark Matters - EP07 - The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

    Show notes

In the summer of 1988, a small South Carolina town found itself chasing a seven foot, scaled creature with red eyes, and the strangest part of the whole case is that the only real evidence anyone ever produced was a terrified seventeen year old boy who passed a police polygraph test. This episode of Dark Matters heads to Scape Ore Swamp, near Bishopville in Lee County, for the story of the Lizard Man.

After a couple's car turned up mysteriously damaged in the swamp overnight, Christopher Davis reported being chased by something out of the trees while changing a flat tyre on a lonely back road. Deputies cast three toed footprints, a cryptid researcher blamed Bigfoot, a fake evidence claim collapsed within days, and the story went national, turning a quiet cotton town into a media circus complete with lizard themed merchandise and a million dollar reward nobody ever claimed.

More than three decades on, the case is still unresolved, tangled up with a dying sheriff who never stopped believing, a witness whose life was upended by that one night, and a local rumour involving a butterbean farmer that's never been confirmed or denied.

    Show notes

Jonathan Frank Tate spent years patrolling Newborough Forest on Anglesey as Warden, and it's one of his own recorded accounts, unaltered from his book Factual Supernatural, now out on Amazon, that gives this episode of the Haunted UK Podcast its material.

Walking a quiet forest path late one still night, he sees a warm, lantern-like glow moving through the trees on a parallel track, gliding steadily towards him with no footsteps and no figure carrying it.

The light draws level, bright enough to catch the branches around it, then stops directly opposite where he's standing, as though it's noticed him too. There's no hand holding it, no shadow, no sound at all, just the glow, motionless in the dark a few metres away, until he forces himself to walk on. When he finally looks back, it's vanished completely, with nothing left to explain where it went.

  10. The Witness Files - Case 09 - The Woman in the Window

    Show notes

On her very first day working at Dover Castle, Cecilia looked up at an enormous building beside the car park and saw a woman in a dark, hooded cloak staring down at her from a second-floor window. In this real Witness Files account, that single glance sets off a chain of events that leaves two experienced colleagues just as unsettled as she was.

The building turns out to be the Officer's Mess, a 19th-century addition to Dover Castle that's been closed to staff and visitors for years. When Cecilia mentions the figure she saw on her first day, her colleagues insist she couldn't have seen anyone there at all, and take her inside to prove it. What she finds is a gutted shell with no floor on the level where the woman had been standing.

Her manager has an explanation of her own: Dover Castle's long-reported Grey Lady, a spirit tied to this exact building, said to have appeared decades earlier during a party to warn staff of a fire, then vanished with no guest matching her description ever found.

    Show notes

Jonathan Frank Tate spent years patrolling Newborough Forest on Anglesey as Warden, and it's one of his own recorded accounts, unaltered from his book Factual Supernatural, now out on Amazon, that gives this episode of the Haunted UK Podcast its material.

Sitting on a quiet hillock above a forest track on a calm summer afternoon, he hears what sounds like hundreds, maybe thousands, of feet running along the path directly below him. When he looks down, the track is completely empty.

The sound doesn't fade or explain itself. It builds into what he describes as a stampede's worth of footsteps, rushing and overlapping, with no voices and no visible cause, while sunlight falls undisturbed across an empty path and the ferns beside it don't so much as move. It lasts several long minutes before receding into the trees, leaving the forest to settle back into ordinary birdsong as though nothing had happened at all.

  12. Fright Bites - EP13 - Frozen Ghosts & Other Encounters

    Show notes

A man sitting alone in a rural train station shelter gets up, walks into the dark at the end of the platform, and vanishes completely: no footprints, no sound, nowhere he could have gone. Then the footsteps start again, coming from behind him. This episode of Fright Bites packs in four real, unexplained encounters, including one told for the first time in the listener's own voice.

Alongside it: a lifetime of unexplained incidents in one family home, from toys thrown by nobody to a heating system that kept getting turned up while the house sat empty, and two brothers, years apart, who each described the exact same imaginary friend. A night of relentless knocking at a Welsh holiday cottage turns out to have happened to every guest who's ever stayed there. And a ten year old, wide awake in bed, comes face to face with a tall, snarling, black clad figure she was certain, even then, was a vampire.

Listen to all four accounts now, and if you've had an encounter of your own, get in touch, it could be the next Fright Bite.

    Show notes

Jonathan Frank Tate spent years in security operations, the military, and private contracting, but it's his time as Warden for Newborough and Llanddwyn on Anglesey that gives this account its material.

His book, Factual Supernatural, is out now on Amazon, and this episode features one of its accounts exactly as he wrote it, unaltered.

In broad daylight, on a coastal path between the dunes and the forest, Tate sees a girl sitting perfectly still beside the track. He looks away for only a few seconds. When he looks back, she is gone, with no tracks in the sand and no sound in the trees to explain how.

    This is Red Head.

Tate spent years patrolling Newborough and Llanddwyn, walking coastal paths caught between dune and forest, in a landscape shaped by wind, tide, and centuries of storms that buried a royal court beneath the sand. Walking that same path for hours, losing track of time and distance in the silence, he notices the girl sitting just off the track, her pale hair lifting in the wind, and steps behind a tree out of reflex before letting himself be seen. When he steps back onto the path moments later, she has vanished completely: the sand around her lies undisturbed, nothing moves in the trees, and there is nowhere she could have gone without being seen or heard.

  14. Dark Matters - EP06 - The White Lady of Grace Dieu Priory

    Show notes

A woman who died almost eight hundred years ago is still, by more than one account, walking a stretch of road in Leicestershire. In this Dark Matters case, a bus once pulled in for her at a shelter opposite Grace Dieu Priory, the doors opened, and nobody got on, because by the time the driver looked, she'd already gone.

The White Lady has been seen at the same forty yards of road across decades: a family in a horse-drawn carriage in 1926, an off-duty police constable in 1981, a family driving home in 1990, and, more than once, officers who say a hooded figure simply appeared in the back seat of a parked patrol car. The ruins themselves, all that's left of a strict thirteenth-century nunnery founded by the formidable Rohese de Verdun, sit on a real geological fault line, and a darker local legend claims a prioress was bricked up alive after her baby was drowned in the priory fishpond.

Ghost hunters have picked up the same details independently on separate visits years apart, from a ghost box insisting eight spirits are present to a photograph that looks unmistakably like a hooded figure caught in mist.

There's no figure in the trees, no scream, no glowing eyes, just a voice, low and mumbling, moving through the undergrowth toward a path with nobody speaking it.

    This is The Mumbler.

Tate spent years patrolling Newborough and Llanddwyn after dark, walking paths shaped by animals rather than people, in a landscape where centuries-old storms buried a royal court beneath the dunes.

A mother tucks her daughter in for the night in their Niagara Falls apartment, certain she'd just watched her standing silent in the bedroom doorway wearing a nightgown she doesn't own. In this Witness Files case, the ten-year-old explains it the next morning without missing a beat: "That's just Abigail. She used to live here when it was a farm."

It's the first of several accounts from the same witness, spanning a decade and two countries. A slammed car door and running footsteps with no explanation, on the same afternoon her father dies in a road accident miles away. Unexplained footsteps outside a locked hotel room during a Highland dance trip to Glasgow. And, more recently, years of activity across a run of interconnected shops in Ontario, all built on the same patch of land: motion-activated toys switching themselves on one by one, a glass ornament hurled across an empty room, and a mezzanine floor no member of staff will go near alone.

    Show notes

In Part Two of this Haunted UK Podcast: On the Road interview, Jamie Corstorphine of City of the Dead Tours picks up right where Part One left off, 1679, and the aftermath of the Battle of Bothwell Brig, when captured Covenanter prisoners were brought to Edinburgh and held in the conditions that built Greyfriars Kirkyard's grim reputation.

From there, Jamie takes us into one of Britain's most infamous paranormal cases: the Mackenzie Poltergeist, the story behind the scratches, faintings, and unexplained encounters reported around one particular mausoleum in the kirkyard, and clears up some of the misinformation that's built up around the case over the years. The conversation then heads underground into the South Bridge Vaults, the network of chambers beneath Edinburgh's Old Town once home to illegal taverns and the city's poorest residents, now known for a very different kind of reputation.

  18. The Witness Files - Case 07 - The Station That Never Slept

    Show notes

On his very first shift as a security officer at a fire station in South Wales, Dorian was asked the same question by three different firefighters before lunch: have you seen the ghosts yet? In this Witness Files case, the joke stops being a joke fast, once he learns exactly what the station was built on top of.

The station sits directly on the site of a Victorian colliery, where an explosion in 1878 trapped over three hundred men and boys underground and ultimately killed 268 of them, many by drowning when the pit was flooded to control the fire. Firefighters posted there over the years describe knocking on doors with nobody behind them, appliance bay lights and doors found open on empty patrols, and crews who refuse to linger once the sun goes down.

One colleague who dismissed it all as nonsense changed his mind within a single night shift, after seeing three figures crossing the mess room that he could only describe as looking like miners.

Hear Dorian's full witness statement, and find out how to submit your own account to The Witness Files archive, in this episode.

  19. City of the Dead Tours - Greyfriars Kirkyard - Part 1

    Show notes

Beneath Edinburgh's Old Town lie underground vaults and graveyards where visitors say they've encountered something they can't explain. In Part One of this two-part Haunted UK Podcast: On the Road interview, we sit down with Jamie Corstorphine, manager of City of the Dead Tours, to find out why Edinburgh has earned its reputation as one of Britain's most haunted cities.

Jamie has spent years guiding visitors through Edinburgh's darkest corners, and here he takes us into the history of Greyfriars Kirkyard, one of Scotland's most famous graveyards, shaped by centuries of plague, poverty, and public execution. We hear about the Covenanters' Prison hidden within its walls, an unexpected piece of Greyfriars trivia involving a flag once flown over the White House, and Jamie's own take on why some visitors arrive as sceptics and leave convinced something strange is going on.

Part One ends right on the edge of Greyfriars' darkest chapter, as Jamie takes us back to 1679 and the aftermath of the Battle of Bothwell Brig.

Listen to Part One now, and join us for Part Two as we head underground into the Mackenzie Poltergeist and the South Bridge Vaults.

  20. Episode 80 - The Beast of the A1075

    Season 8, Episode 10

    Show notes

A lonely road cuts through the darkened landscapes of East Anglia, passing heathland, forest, ancient trackways and places long associated with folklore.

But along the A1075, witnesses have reported something far stranger than shadows at the roadside.

In this atmospheric investigation, Haunted UK Podcast travels into the eerie borderlands of Norfolk and Suffolk to explore a series of unsettling encounters with large, hair-covered creatures seen near Thetford Forest, Wayland Wood, Peddars Way and the surrounding countryside. From a towering ape-like figure said to have drifted across the road in front of a startled driver, to reports of grey, long-snouted beasts, silent woodland apparitions, and a possible encounter with the legendary Black Shuck, these accounts form a strange and persistent pattern across decades.

Rooted in local history, ancient routes, East Anglian folklore and modern witness testimony, this episode examines the stories of those who saw something they could not easily explain - and the lasting fear, confusion and fascination that followed.

Featuring research compiled by Edward Oliver, with witness reports edited and inserted by Lucy Spirit, these accounts are presented with permission on behalf of those who came forward to share their experiences.

Whether these sightings are misidentified animals, the influence of folklore on lonely night journeys, or something more difficult to define, the mystery of the Beast of the A1075 remains one of East Anglia’s most intriguing roadside legends.
