Season 4, Episode 40

Mizen to Malin, Episode 6: Ice Baths, Uncle Sam & the Fourth of July 🇺🇸
Colin, Andrew and Matt are back with the idiot’s guide to running across Ireland, and this time we have a special guest: our crewman James Hayden, who told us to get lost when we asked him onto the podcast nearly three years ago. We pick up at the end of Day 5, where Austin from Banner Recovery has been waiting for hours with a van full of recovery boots, an ice bath and a jacuzzi. James finally gets his say on the great vegan treat cover-up. Matt and Andrew do their three minutes in the ice, Colin lasts 17 seconds before leaping into the jacuzzi like a salmon, and James, who can’t swim, sits in the ice bath like it’s a hot tub.
Then it’s the Fourth of July. Colin jumps out of a bathroom as a topless Uncle Sam, he and Andrew belt out what turns out to be the French national anthem, and it becomes the soundtrack to a 36-mile day of “Happy Fourth of July!” at full volume and dancing for car toots. Ryan Number Two joins us in a spare pair of USA shorts, and Paul, who also has MS, runs with us for hours, only for Colin to introduce him as Gary.
We finish with Uncle Sam knocking on the wrong Airbnb door, a Fourth of July party at the pub, Andrew’s barricade v. Colin’s tumble dryer, a mountain of fig rolls, James’s three tips for any crewman and his verdict on our Irish accents. Next time: our last day with James, 200 miles and a night in a castle.

Mizen to Malin, Episode 5: Silent Supper at the Monastery 🤫
Colin, Andrew and Matt are back with the idiot’s guide to running across Ireland. We pick up straight from Part 04 on Day 4, with 100 miles done and Matt’s shin setting the pace. Dinner is the first McDonald’s of the trip, and we try to solve the mystery of James, the crewman nobody ever sees eat, who somehow always has your bottles filled, a new flavour of crisps and a perfectly warm Pot Noodle ready.
Then we arrive at Glenstal Abbey. We’re full of burgers, we’ve been on the road for almost 12 hours in the heat, and we’re told our places are set for… a silent supper. Andrew fake-sips tea for the whole meal, Colin the vegan eats goat’s cheese to be polite, a monk reads aloud about gruesome gothic paintings, and then someone drops a fork. James may never recover.
On Day 5 the monks pack us a road breakfast and Colin goes all out for 1,000 Instagram followers (Andrew and Matt go live from the abbey car park just to rub it in). There’s postcard Irish countryside, ice cubes under hats, new blisters, a shoe confession (“only took me 350 miles to learn I was in the wrong shoe”) and some very serious awkward family photos at a cemetery. We finish with a teaser for Colin’s special recovery evening.

Mizen to Malin, Episode 4: Scorchers, Ice Missions & 100 Miles 🧊
Colin, Andrew and Matt are back with the idiot’s guide to running across Ireland. We pick up halfway through Day 3 leaving Mill Street, just as the first scorcher hits. Matt explains what a heatwave does to someone with MS (“I do feel like I know how kryptonite makes Superman feel”), which kicks off an all-out mission for ice. James finds the pub shut, Colin somehow walks out with the biggest bag of ice in Ireland, and it ends in an ice-lolly lightsaber fight.
Day 3 finishes at 35.1 miles, our biggest day yet. Then comes a night in a far-too-fancy Charleville Hotel room, an ice bath for Matt’s heel, and Andrew v. the recovery boots.
Day 4 brings early starts, eating on the move, a castle nobody saw and a lot of wreaths. Then we hit 100 miles right outside the Chill-a-Bean café, whose owner ran the route in a relay a week earlier and treated us to free coffee, while Colin was very much busting for the toilet. Add our first road karaoke, a new shin injury for Matt, and seven more days to go.

Mizen to Malin, Episode 3: Mill Street to… Mill Street 🤦♂️
Colin, Andrew and Matt are back with the idiot’s guide to running across Ireland. We pick up on day three in Mill Street and somehow get ourselves all the way back to Mill Street. Plenty of effort. Familiar scenery.
We talk Ryan Number One getting lost in the hills, windmills, and our route through the mountains—where “are we sure this is the way?” becomes an increasingly reasonable question. Meanwhile, a Garmin watch breaks down, apparently deciding it didn’t sign up for this either.
There’s also chat about Celine and Andrew’s best “What’s up, guys?” Because when your navigation is questionable, at least your entrance can be confident.
Expect running adventures, mountain miles, dodgy directions and the usual nonsense from Idiots Go Running. Whether you’re into Mizen to Malin, ultrarunning, trail running, endurance challenges or three lads explaining how it all went sideways, you’re in the right place.

DAY 00… THE ROAD TO MIZEN
Today is not a running day.
Today is the chaos before the chaos.
Cars packed. Kit everywhere. Food boxes loaded. Chargers hopefully remembered. First aid packed like we are opening a small pharmacy. Coffee ready. Nerves very much kicking in.
We are making our way to Mizen Head, the very bottom of Ireland, where this whole ridiculous, beautiful adventure begins.
Tomorrow we start running from Mizen to Malin.
Around 350 miles. Two runners with MS. One massive challenge. A Guinness World Record attempt. A nightly podcast. A crew held together by caffeine, kindness and probably Haribo.
This journey is about MS, hope, research, friendship, and showing what can still be possible when life throws something massive at you.
Tonight we sleep near the start line.
Tomorrow… we move.

S04 E34 - Chasing Nick - Sub 3r Or Not Sub 3hr
Season 4, Episode 34
Show notes
In the final episode of Chasing Nick, Colin takes on the big one: trying to break 3 hours at the Belfast Marathon.
After weeks of structured marathon training, speed work, threshold sessions, long runs, taper madness, pacing talk, race nerves and questionable decisions, it all comes down to race day.
This episode is the final chapter in the sub-3 marathon journey with Nick — the running coach. From the early training blocks to the final attempt, Chasing Nick has followed the highs, doubts, lessons and reality of trying to turn a big running goal into something real.
Did Colin beat 3 hours?
Not quite.
But this episode is about more than a finish time. It’s about what marathon training teaches you, why pacing matters, how quickly a race can change, and why sometimes the real win is coming out the other side ready for even bigger adventures.
In this final farewell episode, we talk about:
• The Belfast Marathon race-day experience
• What went right and what went wrong
• The reality of chasing a sub-3 marathon
• Pacing, pressure and race execution
• What Colin learned from structured marathon training
• Why the journey mattered more than the clock
• Saying goodbye to Chasing Nick
• Looking ahead to 100 miles and the 350-mile Mizen to Malin runA huge thank you to Nick — the running coach for guiding the chaos, giving the advice, and somehow agreeing to help an idiot chase a sub-3 marathon.
This may be the end of Chasing Nick…
…but the idiots are not finished yet.
Next up: 100 miles, then 350 miles across Ireland for MS.

Season 4, Episode 31
Show notes
In this episode of Idiots Go Running, we chat about what actually goes into building a ridiculous endurance event like MS Runs Ireland — our 350-mile run from Mizen Head to Malin Head.
Crewmen, accommodation, sponsors, merch, route planning, fundraising, logistics, panic, spreadsheets… and somehow, Colin has ended up being called the race director.
Which is terrifying for everyone involved.
We talk about the behind-the-scenes work that turns a mad running idea into something that almost looks like a real event.
In this episode, we cover:
• Building the MS Runs Ireland challenge
• Planning a 350-mile run across Ireland
• Multi-day ultra running logistics
• Crew, support vehicles and accommodation
• Long-distance running preparation
• Sponsors, merch and event branding
• Ultra marathon mindset and planning
• Fundraising through endurance running
• Does being organised makes us any less stupid... it does not. This is another honest, funny and slightly chaotic look behind the scenes as the team gets closer to the start line.

S04 E31 - Taper week, Marathon Day Tips & Advice
Season 4, Episode 29
Show notes
This week on Idiots Go Running, it’s the last Chasing Nick episode before Belfast Marathon — and somehow, we’ve made it to taper week without fully falling apart.
In this episode, we chat with Nick — the running coach about the full marathon training process, what a proper training block should look like, and what happens when the hard work is done and the taper begins.
🏃♂️ Marathon training blocks
What actually happens during a marathon build, why the weeks are structured the way they are, and how the body adapts over time.
🧠 Taper week explained
What tapering is, why runners suddenly feel weird, tired, heavy, emotional or convinced they’ve lost all fitness overnight.
🍝 What to eat during taper week
How to fuel properly before a marathon, what to avoid, and why this is not the week to suddenly become a brand-new person with brand-new food ideas.
🎒 Marathon prep
Race kit, pacing, gels, hydration, logistics, nerves, sleep, toilet panic, and all the tiny details that suddenly feel life-or-death three days before race day.
☕ Marathon morning breakfast
What to eat before the marathon, when to eat it, how to keep it simple, and why your stomach deserves a calm morning, not a surprise buffet.
This is a proper marathon episode for anyone training for a marathon, chasing a PB, aiming for sub-3, preparing for Belfast Marathon, or just wondering why taper week makes runners act completely unhinged.

S04 E29 - Ireland AM Talks to Ultra Runners!
Season 4, Episode 29
Show notes
We recently had the absolute privilege of sitting on the Ireland AM sofa to share our story.
When you are told a wheelchair could be in your future, it changes everything. It changes how you see life, how you see time, and how you choose to move forward. For us, it meant lacing up our running shoes, getting out the door, and chasing every mile we could.
In the full audio from our interview, we talk about how a shared Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis connected us from opposite sides of the world and led to one enormous goal — running 350 miles, the full length of Ireland, in a bid to set a Guinness World Record as the fastest team with MS to complete the crossing.
This is more than an ultra endurance challenge. It is about friendship, resilience, hope, and proving that life does not stop after an MS diagnosis. You might have to change your pace, but you do not stop moving.
Every training run, every long run, every sore leg, every early morning, and every brutal mile is carrying us closer to our goal of raising £100,000 to help fund vital MS research and bring us one step closer to a cure.
Whether you are an ultramarathon runner, a marathon runner, someone training for your first 5K, or someone facing a battle of your own, we hope our story reminds you that progress is still progress — and that even the toughest road can be taken one step at a time.

From marathon training, ultra running, race strategy, long run thoughts, running shoes, fuelling, and pace obsession… to the stuff no runner seems to mention until it is far too late.
It is honest, funny, and full of the kind of conversation that only makes sense if you have ever gone out for a run and come back talking nonsense.
If you love running podcasts, marathon podcasts, ultra marathon stories, training talk, and the strange mindset of endurance runners, this one is for you.
Idiots Go Running is the podcast about running, friendship, mindset, big challenges, and figuring it all out one mile at a time.
Listen, follow, and join us as we head towards our 350 mile Mizen to Malin challenge.
