How low-calorie diets and weight loss drugs affect clients long term
Show notes
The most important thing NASM fitness professionals need to know is that low-calorie and low-energy diets, whether intentional or medication-driven, can have significant impacts on weight loss, metabolism, and long-term health, and require careful management and client education to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
In this “Master Instructor Roundtable,” hosts Wendy Batts and Dr. Marty Miller are joined by Dr. Brad Dieter, who provides an evidence-based review of low-calorie and low-energy diets. Listeners will gain a clear understanding of how these dietary approaches have evolved over the last century, why appetite-suppressing medications like GLP-1s are changing the landscape, and which physiological changes fitness professionals must monitor in clients who drastically reduce their calorie intake.
Key topics include the role of non-exercise activity in weight loss, the importance of macronutrient intake (particularly protein) in preserving lean mass, and the specific lines NASM professionals must not cross regarding diet prescription and medical referral. The episode also covers long-term implications of diet and medications on muscle, bone density, and chronic disease risk.
After listening, trainers will be equipped to better support clients using low-calorie diets or weight loss medications, ensuring nutrition, recovery, and overall wellbeing remain priorities within a safe and ethical scope of practice.
Chapters:
00:02:34 Why should fitness professionals care about low-calorie and low-energy diets, especially now?
00:05:14 What is the history of low-calorie diets, and how effective have they been?
00:07:36 How do new weight loss medications suppress appetite and change dietary patterns?
00:09:19 What physiological changes should trainers look out for in clients eating much less due to medications?
00:11:28 Why does rapid weight loss from aggressive dieting not last long-term?
00:15:20 Does a 10 percent weight loss benefit everyone, or only those who are very overweight?
00:17:19 What are the long-term risks of staying on appetite-suppressing medications like GLP-1s?
00:20:11 What is metabolic adaptation, and how does metabolism change during significant weight loss?
00:25:16 Why is non-exercise activity (NEAT) more important than metabolism for weight management?
00:28:22 What happens to ghrelin and leptin hormones during weight loss, and why does it matter for weight regain?
00:32:32 How should protein and other macronutrients be managed when someone’s calorie intake drops a lot?
00:36:16 What is the line between educating about nutrition and prescribing a diet as a trainer?
00:39:25 What specific things should NASM professionals monitor for clients on low-calorie diets or weight loss meds?
00:42:27 What are the three key things trainers should do differently as weight loss medications become common?

Cut Your Gym Time: Science-Backed Ways to Build Muscle Faster
Show notes
Yes, you can achieve the same strength and muscle growth with shorter, time-efficient resistance training sessions as you would with longer traditional workouts, according to research discussed in this “Master Instructor Roundtable.” The main question this episode answers is: "Can time-efficient resistance training give you the same results as longer, traditional sessions?"
Hosts Wendy Batts and Marty Miller break down recent NASM-backed research showing that shorter workouts—sometimes cutting total duration by 30 to 50 percent—can be just as effective for strength and hypertrophy, provided the right strategies are used. They explain specific techniques such as focusing on exercise selection (like multi-joint movements), using supersets, drop sets, and rest-pause methods, and making thoughtful adjustments to rest intervals and weekly training volume.
Listeners will learn how to program sessions efficiently for clients with tight schedules, challenge the myths about workout length, and use the OPT model to guide their approach. Practical advice helps trainers understand how to adapt routines without compromising safety or results, all supported by current NASM sources.
Chapters:
00:00 What is time-efficient resistance training and why does it matter?
02:21 Why do clients say they do not have time to work out?
03:32 Is it possible to get muscle gains with shorter workouts?
06:08 How does volume and frequency affect strength and hypertrophy?
08:03 What exercises and equipment are most efficient for results?
10:00 How should you adjust rest intervals for shorter sessions?
13:13 What are drop sets, supersets, and rest-pause techniques?
18:13 How does the NASM OPT model fit with time-efficient training?
22:30 What should trainers tell clients who have limited workout time?

How the LESS Test Reveals ACL Injury Risk in Athletes
Show notes
The main question this episode answers is: What is the LESS (Landing Error Scoring System) test, and how can fitness professionals use its research-based assessment to reduce ACL injury risk in clients, especially when considering anticipated versus unanticipated movement? The LESS test is a movement assessment that helps identify lower extremity dysfunction and ACL injury risk by evaluating how clients land from a jump, whether they know what to expect (anticipated) or are reacting to new stimuli (unanticipated).
NASM experts Wendy Batts and Marty Miller break down recent, peer-reviewed NASM research from the open-access Journal of Fitness, Wellness, and Human Performance to demonstrate how to accurately use the LESS test with athletes and everyday clients. This “Master Instructor Roundtable” guides listeners through the test’s setup, scoring system, practical applications, and the science supporting both anticipated and unanticipated testing situations. Listeners will learn how to integrate this assessment safely, score it correctly using video, and interpret results to inform program design that decreases ACL and other lower limb injury risks.
By the end of the episode, fitness professionals will be equipped to decide when and how to use the LESS test and adapt their programs for better, safer movement performance.
Chapters:
00:00:05 What is the LESS test and why is it important for injury risk?00:01:43 How does the LESS assess lower extremity function for athletes and non-athletes?
00:03:12 Why is power training and assessment needed for all clients?00:05:18 How is the LESS test set up and what exactly does it measure?00:08:13 What are the preconditions for using the LESS safely and effectively?
00:09:05 Who developed and validated the LESS and what is its research foundation?
00:14:55 What is the difference between anticipated and unanticipated LESS testing?
00:16:30 How does the LESS test scoring system work and what do scores mean?
00:22:31 Why does unanticipated movement increase ACL injury risk according to the research?
00:26:38 How can trainers use LESS results to design better injury-prevention programs?
00:33:59 What practical strategies can I use to apply LESS research in my client sessions?
00:34:16 What types of unanticipated reactive training can reduce real-life injury risk?
