A new study has uncovered a surprising metabolic villain — D-lactate, the molecular twin of the lactate that fuels your muscles. Unlike L-lactate, D-lactate builds up in people with obesity and contributes to insulin resistance, fatty liver, and metabolic dysfunction. But scientists have now found a way to trap this molecule in the gut, potentially opening the door to a brand-new class of metabolic therapies. In this video, Nick Norwitz MD PhD explains the study, its implications for human health, and how certain probiotics and homemade yogurts could help reduce D-lactate levels naturally.

Statins are among the most prescribed and profitable drugs in the world, but new research is forcing us to rethink what they actually do — and for whom. In this video, Dr. Nick Norwitz MD PhD breaks down the latest data showing that statins only reduce cardiovascular risk in people with existing heart disease, while showing little or no benefit for those without.

Nick walks through, not one, but 4 major studies and explains why LDL cholesterol and ApoB aren’t the whole story, how coronary imaging (CAC or CTA scans) provide better risk prediction, and why the real root causes — like insulin resistance and mitochondrial dysfunction — often get ignored. This isn’t about conspiracy or fear — it’s about context. Good medicine isn’t black or white — it’s nuanced, transparent, and collaborative.

In this episode, Dr Andrew Koutnik and I dive deep into the science of fiber, keto, and more – focusing on two influential 2025 papers. First, we unpack the a new study revealing how a specific type of fiber can “immunize” the body against fructose by reshaping the microbiome, protecting the liver, reducing de novo lipogenesis, and boosting glutathione production. This isn’t “more fiber is better”—it’s precision nutrition.

Then we break down the keto mouse study that was widely discuss for claiming ketogenic diets cause fatty liver and glucose intolerance. We explain why this particular mouse model leads to misleading results, and how diet design specifics dramatically change outcomes. When viewed through these lenses, the scare headlines collapse.

We also explore how to think critically about nutrition science, why animal studies can both illuminate and mislead, how individuals can apply evidence with nuance, and why personal experimentation—combined with skepticism and curiosity—leads to better metabolic outcomes. If you're trying to understand fiber, fructose, ketogenic diets, diabetes, or simply want to make better decisions about your own metabolic health, this conversation provides clarity and actionable insight.

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is one of the most feared genetic risk factors for heart disease. But new 2025 data tell a far more hopeful story.

In this video, I break down a large, long-term study showing that Lp(a)-related cardiovascular risk depends heavily on metabolic context, especially waist-to-hip ratio — a simple marker of visceral fat. Shockingly, in people with low waist-to-hip ratios, even high Lp(a) levels were not associated with increased heart disease risk.

We walk through the data, the graphs, the mechanisms (clotting, inflammation, oxidative stress), and the practical takeaways.

Genes are not destiny. Metabolic health changes the story.

Visceral Fat Randomized Controlled Trial Video: https://youtu.be/lDeegZ1wtAI

    Description:
Most people think of fat as extra weight—something cosmetic or something to “burn off.” But new science is showing something far more profound: visceral fat is an endocrine organ that sends biochemical messages across the entire body, including directly into the brain. And those messages can change mood, increase stress sensitivity, and even promote depression.

In this video, we break down a brand-new study revealing how visceral fat releases tiny molecular packages called extracellular vesicles. Inside those vesicles is a specific microRNA—a signal that can cross the blood-brain barrier, impair neurons in the hippocampus, lower BDNF, and induce depression-like behavior in animal models.

This emerging research provides a mechanistic explanation for why obesity and depression are so tightly linked, why mood disorders often worsen with metabolic disease, and why improving metabolic health may improve mental health.

Finally, we explore what you can do today—how reducing visceral fat may lower miR-145-5p, improve brain resilience, and break the vicious metabolic–mood loop. Your metabolism and your mind are not separate systems. They are one.

What if Oreo cookies could lower cholesterol faster — and more powerfully — than a multi-billion-dollar statin drug? That’s the question I set out to test in a 5-month controlled self-experiment I ran as a Harvard Medical School student. And the results were so shocking they were eventually published in peer-reviewed literature.

This video shares the full story — why my LDL cholesterol skyrocketed into the 500s after going ketogenic, the physiology behind the lean-mass hyper-responder phenomenon, and how adding 12 Oreo cookies per day dropped my LDL twice as much as high-dose statin therapy and in one-third of the time.

But this isn’t just about cookies…This is a video about challenging assumptions, testing mechanisms, provoking curiosity, and using a viral headline to shine light on a deeply misunderstood physiological phenomenon.

Chapter Advisory, LLC represents Medicare Advantage HMO, PPO, and PFFS organizations and stand alone prescription drug plans that have a Medicare contract. Enrollment depends on the plan’s contract renewal. While we have a database of every Medicare plan nationwide and can help you to search among all plans, we have contracts with many but not all plans. As a result, we do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 50 organizations which offer 18,160 products nationwide. We search and recommend all plans, even those we don’t directly offer. You can contact a licensed Chapter agent to find out the number of products available in your specific area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-Medicare, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.

  17. This Vegan Documentary is a Bait and Switch

    Show notes

What I liked: I like the concept of 'bringing the viewer along with the science.' I agree with the fact that the SAD eating pattern is problematic and that it would be an improvement to eat a whole food-based diet. I also (very much) acknowledge there are non-health related issues about food that we should have adult discussions about.

    What I didn't like:
    (1) This series wasn't really about the twin study. Data were only presented, a bit, in the last of the 4 episodes.
    (2) The advertised foods (fake meat, fake cheese, fake eggs) are cast as similar/identical, but simply aren't, nor were they the basis of the participant's diets.
    (3) The data presented were, I think, not all that impressive. And some data presented in the documentary could not be found in the paper, e.g. body composition.

Most people think of plastic as an environmental problem—something that harms oceans, wildlife, and ecosystems. But emerging science is revealing something far more personal: microplastics don’t just pollute the planet— they may be poisoning your heart.

A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found microplastics and nanoplastics embedded inside human arterial plaque. Even more alarming, patients with these particles inside their arteries had a 350% higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.

This research suggests microplastics may drive cardiovascular disease through oxidative stress, inflammation, immune activation, and vascular damage. Under the microscope, jagged plastic fragments were found lodged inside macrophages—immune cells that normally clear debris—triggering inflammation and accelerating plaque instability.

We also explore what you can do today—from reducing heat-exposed plastics, filtering water, and improving air quality, to emerging research on internal defense strategies aimed at binding microplastics before they’re absorbed. This isn’t fear. It’s empowerment. Knowledge isn’t meant to panic us—it’s meant to protect us. Stay curious.
