The Opposite of Love
Show notes
When a woman suddenly stops showing up for work, a welfare check at her home raises more questions than answers. Detective Sergeant Laura arrives to find a guarded husband whose account is filled with inconsistencies.
As the missing person investigation deepens, Laura must trust her instincts, keep a potential suspect talking, and carefully piece together what really happened in a case that shocked a small, tight-knit community.
Laura Price spent her law enforcement career asking questions, following clues, and discovering that on a small island, things are rarely as simple as they first appear. Her 23-year career began as a reserve deputy and took her through corrections, patrol, investigations, and supervision before retiring from the Island County Sheriff’s Office in 2022.
Laura spent much of her investigative career working child abuse and sex crimes, but in a small agency, detectives rarely have the luxury of staying in one lane. When a homicide or other major case came along, everyone rolled up their sleeves and went to work. Along the way, she learned to always look in the corners for the clues.
These days, Laura has traded the radio and badge for a somewhat quieter life—although she still has a natural curiosity, a tendency to ask a lot of questions, and an appreciation for a good story.

Bad Bet
Show notes
During a volatile period in Edinburgh, Deputy Chief Constable Tom is called to the scene of a shooting, a rare crime in the UK. The victim is a low-level criminal, and police fear the killing could signal the beginning of a gang war.

What they reveal sends the investigation in a direction Tom never expected.
Ret. Deputy Chief Constable Tom was one of Scotland’s most senior police officers. A graduate of Edinburgh University and The FBI Academy, his last role was as commander of a linked murder investigation, commonly known as The Worlds End Murders. He writes a regular “Inside Justice” column for The Scotsman newspaper and has authored several books, including “The Worlds End Murders: The Final Verdict” and a groundbreaking study of forensic science called “Ruxton: The First Modern Murder.” He is currently working on a new book examining the sex industry. Detective Greg retired with a total of 26 years across corrections, patrol, narcotics and violent crimes investigations. Push
Season 20, Episode 2
Show notes
A group of teenage boys are hanging out when a reckless bet turns deadly. Brian is dared to push another boy, Michael, from a three-story train trestle on a freezing winter night.
Prosecutor Kristin is assigned to the case as her jurisdiction pursues felony murder charges against the teenagers involved. But the controversial prosecution quickly turns into a complicated legal battle, leaving Kristin fighting largely on her own to hold the group accountable for Michael’s death.
Kristin takes us inside the investigation, the felony murder prosecution, and the difficult question at the center of it all: how responsible should each teenager be for a death only one of them physically caused?
Kristin began her legal career in 1992 working as a deputy prosecuting attorney for King County, WA. In her ten years as a criminal prosecutor, Kristin conducted over 50 jury trials while working in several different divisions. Her caseload ranged from property crime to homicide, but she spent the majority of her time prosecuting domestic violence. Kristin attended the National Advocacy Center (NAC) in Columbia, SC and became a trial advocacy instructor at the NAC before leaving King County to take a position with the Vermont Department of Public Safety.

Guard the Yard: Akil Baddoo of the Milwaukee Brewers
Show notes
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Akil Baddoo joins Yeardley Smith for a candid and joyful conversation about confidence, resilience, and learning how to stay grounded through the inevitable highs and lows of professional baseball. Akil traces his love of the game back to hitting baseballs with his dad in the backyard, breaking a window before he was even old enough for Little League, and hitting his first home run at five years old. He talks about the confidence his mother instilled in him, knowing from a young age that he wanted to play professionally, and why he never believed in having a backup plan. He also opens up about the setbacks that tested that confidence, including Tommy John surgery, a grueling rehabilitation, the loss of his brother, and the uncertainty of what would come next. Akil shares how journaling, meditation, and learning to control his thoughts helped him through those moments and prepared him for an unforgettable start to his Major League career: a home run on the first pitch he saw, followed by a grand slam and a walk-off hit in his first three games. They also talk about handling failure in a sport where even the best players fail most of the time, staying connected to the joy that made him love baseball in the first place, and the importance of family, community, and his Ghanaian and Trinidadian roots. Plus, Akil shares why he opened The Fade Lounge in Atlanta, his plans to give back to his former high school, and his lesser-known talent for roller skating. Then Akil takes on the Last At-Bat, answering rapid-fire questions about his favorite Beyoncé song, the toughest pitcher he has ever faced, the career he might have pursued outside of baseball, his 200-pair sneaker collection, and the person he trusts most in the world. Every athlete has a story. Guard the Yard is here to hear it.

Firehouse Files: Never Forget
Show notes
Welcome to the premiere episode of Firehouse Files, hosted by Steve Buscemi, Marian Fontana, and Dennis Gordon. Firehouse Files features firefighters and first responders sharing firsthand accounts of the calls that have stayed with them.
Today’s special episode, “Never Forget,” commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks and honors the firefighters who were lost that day and in the years since.
Steve, Marian, Dennis, and their guest, former FDNY Fire Commissioner Dan Nigro, were all in New York City on September 11 and each experienced the tragedy from a different perspective. Dan was serving as the FDNY’s Chief of Operations when the first plane struck the World Trade Center and became Chief of Department after Chief Peter Ganci was killed in the collapse.
Together, they reflect on what they witnessed that day, the firefighters who entered the towers, the rescue and recovery efforts that followed, and the enormous personal toll 9/11 took on the firefighting community. They also discuss survivor guilt, mental health, and the 9/11-related illnesses that continue to claim the lives of first responders 25 years later.
“Never Forget” serves as both a memorial to those we lost and an introduction to Firehouse Files.
The full first season will premiere in January 2027.
Firehouse Files is a co-production between Audio 99 and Olive Productions

After decades of dead ends, the case begins to move with astonishing speed - culminating in, at last, the arrest of Joseph D’Angelo.

The Oklahoma City Bombing, Part 3
Season 18, Episode 12
Show notes
In the final part of this three-part series, retired FBI agent Scott brings us to the end of one of the most significant domestic terrorism cases in American history. Justice is served for the people of Oklahoma City. But for Scott, closing a case like this doesn't mean leaving it behind. Some cases stay with you. This is one of them.
Retired FBI agent R. Scott Crabtree was born in Herington, KS and raised in Omaha, NE. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps before getting his college degree in accounting, aconomics, and business.
During his nearly 25 years career with the Bureau, Scott was assigned to five different field offices, including New York City, their largest office, and the Salina, KS, Resident Agency, a one-person office, as well as two tours at FBIHQ in Washington D.C.
Scott was the lead Kansas investigator of the Oklahoma City Bombing. He later led the Cyber Crime Squad in New York where he worked cases including the "I Love You" virus. After that, he led a rapid task force in Seattle that helped capture the D.C. snipers.
After his retirement, Scott was recruited by a non-profit contractor firm where he was able to continue his work supporting and enabling operational, intelligence and information-sharing functions in numerous law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Scott's book about his work with the Oklahoma City bombing case, called Under 80 Hours, was published in 2025.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit https://podcastchoices.com/adchoices
