  1. Swept Out to Sea: A Surfer’s 32-Hour Fight for Survival | E273

    Episode 273

    Show notes

A 22-year-old surfer paddles into the cold waters off Scotland's coast, expecting an incredible day of waves. But when Matthew Bryce turns toward shore, he realizes something terrifying: no matter how hard he paddles, the beach keeps getting farther away.In April 2017, Matthew set out alone to surf at Westport Beach on Scotland's Kintyre Peninsula. Powerful offshore winds and shifting tides soon carried him into the open waters between Scotland and Northern Ireland. With no phone, no way to signal for help, and nobody knowing exactly where he had gone, Matthew faced an increasingly desperate fight against exhaustion, hypothermia, dehydration, and the relentless cold of the Irish Sea. How long can someone survive stranded on a surfboard in freezing water? And what happens when the very conditions that make for perfect surfing become a life-threatening trap?In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, hosts Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen recount Matthew Bryce's extraordinary real-life ocean survival story, exploring the dangers of offshore winds, cold water exposure, and the critical decisions that can mean the difference between life and death.A gripping true survival story about the power of the ocean, the limits of human endurance, and the fight to stay alive when land is visible but impossibly far away.

  2. 41 Days Adrift; Tami Oldham Ashcraft and Hurricane Raymond | E272

    Episode 272

    Show notes

In September 1983, Tami Oldham and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, set sail from Tahiti on what should have been a routine yacht delivery to San Diego. Weeks later, a hurricane they could not outrun found them in the open Pacific. Tami woke up injured, aboard a boat that barely resembled the one she had boarded, with one question that could not wait: where was Richard? What followed took more than a month, a navigation tool most of us have never used, and a decision at the very end that could have cost her everything. Julie and Kaycee tell the story and explain what a head injury like hers can mean

Content note: This episode includes the death of a loved one, a serious head injury, and a brief mention of suicidal thoughts. In the United States, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text.

  5. Crawling 11 Hours to Survive- Jake Schmitt and the Dog Who Led Him Home | E 269

    Episode 269

    Show notes

On a clear July evening in 2025, a seasoned hunting guide scouting for mule deer in Utah's Uinta Mountains felt his side-by-side begin to tilt at zero miles an hour. Minutes later, he lay on a steep slope with a shattered leg, his satellite messenger, radio, and phone scattered somewhere in the darkening brush, and only one companion left. What followed was an arduous journey of cold creek crossings, yipping coyotes, and a light no bigger than a quarter. Jake Schmitt thought he understood his dog, but somewhere in the dark, Buddy started doing something Jake still can't explain.

  6. The Two Weeks Denali's Most Beautiful Ridge Turned Killer | Disaster Strikes E 268

    Episode 268

    Show notes

On May 24, 1998, a Canadian climber lost his footing on Denali's West Buttress and disappeared down the north face toward the Peters Glacier. Two National Park Service volunteer rangers were a hundred feet ahead of him. One of them radioed for permission to go down and look, got it, and started descending — and somewhere on that slope a decision was made that two separate federal investigations would spend the following year trying to explain. What happened next left one man clipped to a single ice screw in a storm, with no radio, waiting to find out whether anyone knew where he was. Thirteen days later, on the same stretch of ridge, it happened again.

    Episode 266

    Show notes

Doug Scott broke both his legs 23,900 feet above sea level on one of the world's most technically demanding mountains. No rescue team was waiting. No helicopter stood by. For eight days, Scott and his climbing partner Chris Bonington faced a descent that should have killed them—navigating crevasses, rappelling with broken legs, surviving a five-day storm with no food and wet sleeping bags in the death zone. But the real question isn't how they survived the mountain. It's what each person on that team did at every moment when survival seemed impossible. This is the story of how humans respond when everything goes catastrophically wrong.

    Episode 264

    Show notes

On February 17, 2024, five experienced cyclists set out on a familiar gravel-bike route through Washington's Cascade foothills. Nineteen miles into their ride, two cougars appeared on the trail. Seconds later, 60-year-old Keri Bergere was on the ground with a cougar's jaws clamped around her face. Her four friends rushed toward the attack. Armed with little more than rocks, sticks, and the equipment they carried on their bicycles, they faced a predator that refused to let go. With unreliable cell service and another cougar somewhere in the surrounding forest, the women were running out of options. In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, Kaycee and Julie reconstruct the terrifying encounter, examine the medical dangers of a cougar attack, and explore the survival decisions that followed.A true story of wilderness survival, extraordinary friendship, and a fight that lasted far longer than anyone could have imagined.

  11. 3 Hours in the Heat: The Ultramarathoner Who Vanished in Plain Sight | Disaster Strikes E263

    Episode 263

    Show notes

Philip Kreycik was 37, a Harvard graduate, an ultramarathoner, and an experienced outdoorsman. On July 10, 2021, he left for a training run at Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park in California, telling his wife he'd be back in an hour. He never returned. The search that followed became one of the West Coast's largest rescue operations, involving nearly 300 volunteers, multiple agencies, helicopters, and thermal imaging. But GPS data from his smartwatch revealed something investigators initially missed: he likely died within 75 minutes of going missing, before rescue teams could even fully mobilize. Julie and Kaycee walk through the timeline, the medical reality of heat illness, and the margins of error that collapse faster than experience can account for.

  12. 15-Year-Old Alone on Kit Carson Peak: A 200-Foot Fall | E262

    Show notes

A 15-year-old hiker set out on an ambitious three-day backpacking trip through Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, planning to summit four 14ers. He successfully climbed Challenger Point and Kit Carson Peak. Then his route took him into terrain he apparently did not realize was a technical mountaineering route.Halfway down the steep, snow-covered Outward Bound Couloir, his backpack began sliding away. He went after it—and fell roughly 200 feet.In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, Kaycee and Julie retrace what brought the teenager into the couloir, the limitations of relying on Google Maps in the backcountry, and the search-and-rescue operation that followed. It’s a story about route finding, steep-snow travel, a split-second decision, and what happens when an ambitious wilderness trip suddenly becomes a survival situation.Timestamps00:00 — A Teenager, a 14er and a Snow Couloir.

  13. Lost in the Outback for 43 Days: The Man Who Didn't Want to be Found | E261

    Episode 261

    Show notes

When tourists found an abandoned bicycle on a remote track in Australia's Great Sandy Desert, it triggered one of the strangest missing person searches in outback history — police, aircraft, and Aboriginal trackers combing the Kimberley for a man who had vanished without telling anyone where he was going. Twelve days in, the search was called off and his family was told he was almost certainly dead, so they hired a private American wilderness rescue team led by a man who insisted on being called Gunslinger. What none of them knew was that he had walked into the desert deliberately, on a spiritual quest, and had no idea anyone was searching for him at all. Forty-three days of starvation, dehydration and roughly 250 miles on foot later, a helicopter found him alive — and set off a fight that reached the Premier of Western Australia, while the man who led the rescue turned out to have invented his entire past. Twenty-five years on, one of the trackers who searched for him asked him for a single word, and what he said instead is still an uncomfortable part of this story.

  14. The 1967 Denali Disaster: 7 Climbers Trapped Above 19,000 Feet | Disaster Strikes E 260

    Show notes

In July 1967, only 213 people had ever stood on the summit of Denali. When an inexperienced climbing team was denied a permit, the National Park Service made an unusual decision: merge them with a stronger team of strangers and send all twelve climbers up the mountain together. At first, everything goes according to plan. But as two powerful weather systems begin converging over Alaska, a series of decisions—some debated to this day—leave climbers high on North America's tallest peak just as one of the most violent mountain storms ever recorded arrives. Were the climbers warned? Why did they continue toward the summit after spending a night exposed above 19,000 feet? And could anyone have survived what happened next?In this Disaster Strikes episode, we examine the 1967 Denali Disaster, the controversy that followed, and the lessons that forever changed mountaineering on North America's highest mountain.

  16. 119 Days Upside Down; Trapped Inside the Capsized Rose-Noëlle | E258

    Episode 258

    Show notes

At 6 AM on June 4, 1989, a wave the skipper estimated at sixty feet flipped the trimaran Rose-Noëlle upside down off New Zealand’s East Cape, trapping four men — a self-taught sailor sleeping aboard everything he owned, a builder on his first trip abroad, a young outdoorsman, and a cook who had never sailed — in an air pocket the width of a 54-inch mattress. Their distress beacon blinked for nine days into an empty sky, the search concentrated hundreds of miles away, and New Zealand’s Water Safety Council listed all four as drowned. For 119 days they rationed salvaged soft drink and slowly ripening kiwifruit, rigged a rainwater catchment, and speared fish drawn to the barnacle reef their own wreck was becoming, while unusual winds carried them in a wide loop back toward home. Then they washed ashore on Great Barrier Island, cleaned themselves up, and walked into a country whose investigators suspected a drug run. The evidence that finally backed up their story may be the strangest witness in survival history.

  17. Forbidden Island, Certain Death: He Swam to Shore Anyway | Disaster Strikes

    Episode 257

    Show notes

John Allen Chau spent years preparing for one mission: reach the Sentinelese — the world's most isolated tribe, on an island India has forbidden outsiders from entering since 1956 — and share the Christian gospel with them. He trained as a missionary, learned linguistics, made four prep trips to the Andaman Islands, and bribed local fishermen to ferry him close enough to kayak the rest of the way. Over three days, he approached the island multiple times — was shot at, fled, and came back. His 13-page journal, handed to the fishermen before his final swim to shore, documents every encounter in his own words. What happened after he walked up that beach, nobody knows — and nobody ever will. 00:00 Welcome to Disaster Strikes

  18. 15 Hours in a Crevasse: The Denali Rescue That Shouldn't Have Worked

    Episode 254

    Show notes

Trauma surgeon Martin Takac came to Alaska to climb Denali, the highest mountain in North America. He reached the summit. The hardest part, it seemed, was behind him. Then, on the descent, the ground disappeared. A hidden snow bridge collapsed beneath Martin, dropping him deep into a crevasse on the Kahiltna Glacier. He survived the fall—but his body became wedged so tightly inside the narrowing walls of blue ice that rescuers couldn't simply pull him back out. What followed was an extraordinary 15-hour crevasse rescue involving Denali guides, National Park Service mountaineering rangers, volunteers, a helicopter pilot, and eventually a piece of equipment no one would normally expect to see on a glacier. Meanwhile, Martin was trapped almost completely motionless as the cold slowly pushed his body into profound hypothermia. In this episode of The Crux: True Survival Stories, we follow the rescue hour by hour and explore hidden crevasses, snow bridges, glacier travel, severe hypothermia, and the decisions that can separate an ordinary descent from a fight for survival. 00:00 — Podcast Cold Open

  19. Managing Fear: Survival Lessons from Megan Hine

    Episode 253

    Show notes

This week, hosts Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen sit down with Megan Hine—expedition leader, wilderness survival expert, television survival consultant, and the survival consultant for Netflix's The Last House. Drawing on decades of experience leading expeditions in some of the world's harshest environments, Megan explains why survival is often more about psychology than gear, how fear can become a powerful ally, and the habits that consistently separate survivors from those who don't make it. The conversation explores Megan's fascinating career, the science behind resilience, practical techniques for staying calm under pressure, and memorable stories from the field—including a tense nighttime encounter with lions in the Namib Desert. She also shares practical preparedness advice, debunks common survival myths, and explains how everyday people can build resilience long before an emergency ever occurs. 20. 40 MPH Winds, One Meter of Visibility: The Stranger on Ben Nevis

    Episode 252

    Show notes

January 2026. A blizzard is raging on Ben Nevis, the tallest peak in the Scottish Highlands — gale-force winds, sub-zero temperatures, and visibility of about one meter—when a climber becomes separated from his two friends near the summit, without crampons, a map, or a compass. What happens to him next comes down to solid blocks of ice, a bent walking pole, and a group of British and Dutch marines who chose that exact day, in that exact weather, to climb the highest mountain in Britain. Julie and Kaycee unravel how a body shuts down in extreme cold, why the rescue nearly stalled on the iced upper slopes, and what the marines built from the equipment on their backs when walking him down stopped being an option. And at the center of it all: a man whose name has never been made public—and a margin of survival measured in a single meter of white air. 00:44 Show Intro And Setup
