Multivitamin Mistakes, MTHFR Genetics, B Vitamins, Creatine & Prescription Drug Risks

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Phil Cowley, a pharmacist, founder of Cache Valley Pharmacy, and creator of Phil's My Pharmacist, to explore multivitamins, prescription medications, supplement effectiveness, MTHFR genetics, methylated B vitamins, creatine, and the hidden problems within modern healthcare.

After opening his pharmacy in Logan, Utah, in 2001, Phil spent two decades serving patients and dispensing millions of prescriptions. By 2021, declining insurance reimbursements threatened his business despite increasing prescription volume. He turned to social media to share practical, affordable health advice, eventually building an audience of more than six million followers. Now, he explains what his experience behind the pharmacy counter taught him about medication side effects, nutritional deficiencies, supplement quality, and why conventional healthcare often overlooks individual biology.

The conversation examines common multivitamin mistakes, including the use of synthetic folic acid and pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Phil explains why certain nutrient forms may be less suitable for some individuals, how excessive B6 intake can cause peripheral neuropathy, and why buying more supplements doesn't necessarily improve health. They explore MTHFR genetic variants, methylation, and folate metabolism, including potential implications for cognitive function, inflammation, blood pressure, fertility, and neurological development.

Phil also reveals why creatine is his favorite supplement, discussing its potential benefits for brain health and muscle performance. He and Dave examine creatine dosing, hydration, electrolytes, absorption, and why creatine supplementation can influence kidney-related blood test results.

The discussion turns to Big Pharma, prescription drug pricing, and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Phil shares how insurance reimbursement practices threatened his independent pharmacy despite increasing prescription volume. They also explore compounding pharmacies, customized hormone formulations, injectable vitamins, GLP-1 medications, and the challenges of providing personalized treatment within the conventional healthcare system.

Finally, Dave and Phil examine personalized medicine, genetic testing, medication interactions, and nutritional deficiencies, including the relationship between statins and CoQ10. They discuss why individual biology should guide supplement choices and how addressing underlying metabolic processes may offer a more comprehensive approach to long-term health.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in multivitamins, methylated B vitamins, MTHFR genetics, creatine, prescription drugs, supplement effectiveness, personalized nutrition, metabolic health, and longevity.

    You'll Learn:

    • Why common multivitamins contain different forms of B vitamins, and how folic acid, folinic acid, L-methylfolate, and P5P differ
    • How MTHFR genetic variants influence folate metabolism and why individual responses to supplements can vary
    • What Phil recommends considering when using creatine for brain health, muscle performance, hydration, and kidney-related blood testing
    • How pharmacy benefit managers, insurance reimbursement, and drug pricing affect independent pharmacies and patient care
    • Why compounding pharmacies create customized medications, including hormone formulations, injectable vitamins, and certain GLP-1 treatments

  2. I Tried EVERY Controversial Focus Drug

    Episode 1566

    Show notes

I've tried every controversial focus drug I could get my hands on. Modafinil, LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, DMT, ketamine, MDMA, amphetamine, ephedrine, the racetams, and a shelf of Russian compounds most people have never heard of. I've spent 20 years and millions of dollars testing this on my own brain, and here's what I found: some of them work, most don't do what you've been told, and none of them are free.

But the one I'd crown above all of them is legal, costs almost nothing, and you can buy it this afternoon. You've just been lied to about it for 60 years by the people who made a fortune doing it. In this video I'll show you what each compound actually does inside your brain, what it takes from you on the other side, and the four rules I follow so the best one doesn't turn into the worst one.

    You'll Learn:

    • Why modafinil is considered the closest thing to a "Limitless pill" and how it affects sleep
    • How LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine affect the brain differently from focus drugs
    • Why Adderall and amphetamines can make you hyper-focused on the wrong things
    • How racetams became the original nootropics for cognitive enhancement
    • What Russian scientists developed for cosmonauts and soldiers, including bromantane, Semax, and Selank
    • Why pharmaceutical nicotine ranks among the most controversial focus enhancers
    • How nicotine affects acetylcholine, attention, memory, and potentially brain aging
    • Why nicotine and smoking have very different health risks
    • How delivery speed influences addiction risk, from cigarettes to patches and lozenges
    • Dave's four rules for reducing nicotine risks and who should avoid it
    • What Dave learned from spending $2.5 million experimenting with cognitive enhancement

  3. Placebo Pills, Cannabis, Wall Squats for Blood Pressure, Birdwatching, and the Porn brain

    Episode 1564

    Show notes

Placebos Improved IBS Symptoms Even When Patients Knew the Pills Were Inactive

In a randomized trial of 80 adults with irritable bowel syndrome, participants who knowingly took placebo pills reported greater symptom improvement than those receiving no treatment. After three weeks, 59% of the placebo group reported adequate relief compared with 35% of controls. A larger follow-up study also found that openly prescribed placebos improved reported IBS symptoms more than a no-pill control. Host Dave Asprey explores how conditioning, expectations, and the ritual of taking a treatment may influence symptoms without deception. He explains why these findings do not mean symptoms are imaginary or that positive thinking can cure disease, but raise questions about how the brain, treatment context, and learned physiological responses shape the experience of illness.

Once-Weekly Wall Squats Preserved Some Blood-Pressure Benefits After More Frequent Training

A randomized trial involving 100 adults found that isometric wall-squat training reduced blood pressure, with some benefits maintained after participants cut back to one or two sessions per week. The important detail is that participants first completed four weeks of training three times weekly. Those who subsequently reduced to one weekly session finished the eight-week study with systolic blood pressure approximately 6.6 mmHg below baseline, while those continuing three weekly sessions experienced the largest improvement. Host Dave Asprey explores how sustained muscle contractions may influence vascular resistance and autonomic regulation, and why the minimum dose needed to maintain a benefit can differ from the dose needed to build it. He explains why this study does not show that beginners get the same results from one weekly session or that wall squats replace medication.

Expert Birdwatchers Showed Brain Differences Linked to Attention and Perception

A study comparing 29 expert birdwatchers with 29 beginners found differences in brain structure and activity associated with bird-identification expertise. Experts showed lower mean diffusivity in regions involved in attention and perception, an MRI finding researchers interpreted as more compact tissue organization. Some differences were also present in older experts, raising questions about how sustained learning may relate to cognitive aging. Host Dave Asprey examines why birdwatching involves more than spending time outdoors: identifying unfamiliar species requires attention, visual discrimination, memory, and continued learning. He explains why these findings are interesting without proving that birdwatching prevents dementia or slows cognitive decline, since researchers cannot determine whether the hobby caused the differences or whether preexisting characteristics helped people become experts.

Early THC Exposure Changed Serotonin Signaling in Mice Through an mTOR-Related Pathway

A mouse study found that chronic THC exposure beginning early in life altered signaling through serotonin 5-HT2A receptors and increased sensitivity to a subsequently administered serotonergic drug. THC alone did not significantly disrupt the study’s baseline sensorimotor-gating measure, but previously exposed mice showed a greater disruption after the additional drug challenge. Giving rapamycin during THC exposure prevented several signaling changes and the heightened behavioral response, implicating the Akt/mTOR pathway. Host Dave Asprey explores how cannabinoid exposure may influence other neurotransmitter systems and why the timing of exposure matters when interpreting the experiment. He emphasizes that this was a mechanistic animal study, not proof that all cannabis use causes psychosis or that rapamycin can prevent cannabis-related psychiatric effects in humans.

Pornography Consumption Was Linked to Brain Differences, but Cause and Effect Remain Unclear

A brain-imaging study of 64 healthy men found that greater reported pornography consumption was associated with lower gray-matter volume in part of the right caudate, lower activation in the left putamen during a sexual-image task, and lower functional connectivity between the right caudate and a prefrontal region involved in cognitive control. Host Dave Asprey examines what these findings may suggest about reward processing, repeated exposure, and habituation while distinguishing those possibilities from claims the study did not establish. Researchers did not directly measure dopamine depletion, demonstrate brain damage, or show that pornography caused the observed differences. Because participants were assessed at one point in time, preexisting brain characteristics could also help explain differences in consumption. The study raises questions about behavior and brain biology without resolving which came first.

This episode is designed for biohackers, longevity enthusiasts, people interested in cognitive performance and cardiovascular health, and anyone trying to separate provocative brain research from proven cause and effect. Host Dave Asprey examines why placebos may improve symptoms without deception, how reduced-frequency wall-squat training can preserve some blood-pressure benefits, what expert birdwatchers reveal about learning and the aging brain, how early THC exposure altered serotonin signaling in mice, and what pornography brain-imaging research can actually establish. The larger lesson is evidence: distinguish symptom relief from disease treatment, maintenance from improvement, brain differences from brain damage, and a compelling animal mechanism from a proven human intervention.

  4. The No-Brainer Solution To Stop Overeating

    Episode 1565

    Show notes

How Hops Extract Suppresses Hunger, Reduces Cravings, Supports Weight Loss, and Makes Intermittent Fasting Easier

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Sarah Kennedy, CEO of Calocurb, to explore the surprising science of hunger suppression, natural GLP-1 activation, intermittent fasting, weight loss, visceral fat reduction, and a patented hops extract that may help people eat less without relying on willpower.

The conversation centers on Amarasate, a natural compound derived from New Zealand hops, the same plant used to make beer. Originally investigated through a multimillion-dollar research program, this bitter plant extract activates specialized receptors in the digestive tract that stimulate the body's natural appetite-regulating hormones. Sarah explains how this discovery led to Calocurb, a supplement designed to reduce hunger, control cravings, and make fasting and calorie restriction easier.

Dave and Sarah break down the biology of GLP-1, CCK, PYY, ghrelin, and leptin, exploring how these hormones influence hunger, fullness, food cravings, and metabolic health. Unlike injectable GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy, Amarasate works through bitter taste receptors in the gut to stimulate the body's own satiety signaling. They examine why the timing and location of these signals matter, how quickly the extract begins working, and what distinguishes this approach from conventional appetite suppressants.

Sarah shares findings from four human clinical trials, including research reporting an average 18% reduction in calorie intake following consumption of the hops extract. They discuss how activating gut receptors can influence eating behavior, why some people struggle with persistent hunger despite consuming enough calories, and how manipulating the body's natural fullness signals could change approaches to weight management.

The discussion also examines a six-month randomized, placebo-controlled study involving approximately 150 participants, which reported an average 5.5% reduction in body weight, with estimated fat loss and no detected average muscle loss. Sarah describes findings suggesting approximately 3.5 times greater visceral fat reduction compared with placebo, raising questions about whether targeted appetite regulation could support healthier body composition. Dave and Sarah explore why preserving lean muscle while reducing abdominal fat is especially important for metabolic health, healthy aging, and longevity.

They also explore how hops extract may make intermittent fasting and extended fasting easier by reducing hunger and food cravings. Dave discusses the practical challenges of fasting, while Sarah explains how bitter receptor activation can help people manage appetite without constantly fighting the urge to eat. They examine the potential applications for time-restricted eating, longer fasting windows, calorie control, and sustainable weight management.

Finally, Dave and Sarah challenge conventional assumptions about willpower, hunger, and obesity, exploring why overeating is not simply a failure of discipline. They discuss the relationship between gut-brain signaling, metabolic hormones, food intake, and the emerging science of naturally regulating appetite, including how plant-derived compounds could complement nutrition, exercise, and other metabolic health strategies.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in natural appetite suppression, hops extract, intermittent fasting, GLP-1, hunger hormones, weight loss, visceral fat, muscle preservation, metabolic health, gut-brain signaling, and science-backed strategies for controlling cravings and eating less.

    You'll Learn:

    • How a patented compound extracted from hops activates bitter receptors in the gut to stimulate GLP-1, CCK, and PYY, the hormones involved in hunger and fullness
    • Why clinical research found that hops extract reduced calorie intake by approximately 18%, and what that means for appetite control and overeating
    • How a six-month clinical trial reported 5.5% body-weight loss, reduced visceral fat, and no detected average muscle loss
    • Why hunger, cravings, and overeating involve complex hormonal signaling rather than simply a lack of willpower
    • How natural appetite regulation may make intermittent fasting, extended fasting, and calorie restriction easier to maintain
    • How hops-derived compounds differ from injectable GLP-1 medications, and what the research suggests about their potential role in weight management

  5. The Easiest Treatment That Made Me 15 Years Younger

    Episode 1563

    Show notes

    Explore House of Evolution: https://daveasprey.com/house-of-evolution/

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Tim Cook, a physician and longevity medicine expert who previously served as personal physician to two Governors General of Canada, to explore experimental gene therapy, biological age reversal, stem cell re-education, immune rejuvenation, muscle growth, and the emerging science of extending human lifespan.

Recorded in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador, the conversation explores three advanced longevity treatments Dave and Tim are working with through House of Evolution, their venture focused on expanding access to experimental therapies. They discuss how these technologies work, the early results they're observing, and why some treatments are currently available outside the United States.

Dave reveals that after undergoing a two-day stem cell re-education treatment, blood testing approximately two months later indicated his immune system was 15.2 years younger. Tim explains how the procedure uses signaling molecules from umbilical cord blood stem cells to influence a patient's own immune cells before returning them to the body. They explore the potential implications for chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions, and age-related immune dysfunction.

The discussion turns to follistatin gene therapy, an experimental treatment designed to increase a protein involved in muscle growth and maintenance. Dave and Tim share preliminary results, including a reported average nine-year reduction in biological-age measurements, increased lean muscle mass, and reductions in body fat. They examine why preserving muscle and reducing visceral fat may be critical for longevity, particularly as anabolic resistance and sarcopenia become more common with age.

They also explore klotho gene therapy, which targets a longevity-associated protein involved in kidney function, cognitive health, and aging. Tim describes early observations of substantially increased klotho levels following treatment, while Dave explains why this protein has become a major focus of his longevity research. The conversation also examines plasmid-based gene delivery, how it differs from directly editing human DNA, and the unanswered questions surrounding long-term safety and effectiveness.

Dave and Tim challenge conventional thinking about healthspan, lifespan, and longevity escape velocity, discussing whether emerging treatments could eventually help people maintain youthful physical and cognitive function for decades longer. They examine how advanced biomarker testing and predictive models are being used to track biological aging and estimate changes in life expectancy.

Finally, they look ahead to stem cell banking, genetic reprogramming, and regenerative medicine, including the possibility of rejuvenating a person's own cells and growing replacement tissues. They also address the high costs, limited availability, and regulatory challenges surrounding these technologies, emphasizing that many of the results discussed remain preliminary rather than clinically established evidence of age reversal.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in biological age reversal, gene therapy, follistatin, klotho, stem cell re-education, immune rejuvenation, autoimmune disease, muscle growth, visceral fat, regenerative medicine, longevity escape velocity, and the future of anti-aging medicine.

    You'll Learn:

    • How Dave's two-day stem cell re-education treatment was followed by a reported 15.2-year reduction in his measured immune age, and how the procedure works
    • Why follistatin gene therapy is being investigated for muscle growth, sarcopenia, body composition, and biological aging
    • How experimental plasmid-based gene therapies increase protein production without intentionally editing the human genome
    • What early klotho gene therapy results suggest about protein levels, cognitive performance, kidney health, and longevity
    • Why immune system aging, chronic inflammation, and visceral fat may contribute to age-related disease and physical decline
    • How stem cell banking, cellular reprogramming, and regenerative medicine could shape the future of longevity treatments

  6. How To Reverse Your Age For $5 Day (Budget Biohacking)

    Episode 1562

    Show notes

I have spent $2.5 million on this body, and Bryan Johnson spends about $5,400 a day on his. But does it need to be that expensive to biohack? So I gave myself a challenge: build a complete anti-aging protocol for $5/day, where every single thing on it has to be validated in humans, not mice. I could not spend the five dollars. In this video I'll show you the entire list and the two most powerful things I found… which cost nothing at all.

    You'll Learn:

    • How to build a science-backed longevity routine for less than $5 a day
    • Why omega-3s, GlyNAC, and magnesium may help slow aging and support cellular repair
    • How creatine, vitamin D, and L-theanine support brain health, muscle function, and focus
    • Why blackout curtains, red light, and blue-light-blocking glasses can improve sleep and circadian health
    • How walking, morning sunlight, fiber, and quality sleep can improve longevity without expensive supplements
    • What Dave learned from spending $2.5 million on biohacking and why preventing damage is cheaper than repairing it

  7. Avoid THESE "Healthy" Superfoods

    Episode 1561

    Show notes

We just had to bring this one back for you. Today, we’re digging once again into specifics about food that you haven’t heard on the show before. This one may very well influence you to rethink your “healthy” diet and change how you feel about food completely. To get there, I’m excited to welcome back Teri Cochrane, an integrative practitioner and pioneer in personalized healthcare.

Teri is the founder of the Global Sustainable Health Institute® and developer of The Cochrane Method®, a future-facing algorithm for decoding the human body. Teri is also one of the world’s leading experts on dietary amyloids, which is a topic I love talking about.

In today’s episode, we get into what amyloids are and how they turn on viruses, cause cancer, and shorten our lives. We also explore the dangers of oxalates and histamines, plus hacks to reduce and release them. Teri and I both have our own recipes for releasing oxalates that you can try at home (they’re surprisingly simple).

We talk about how dirty poultry is killing us—and how superfoods like kale and almonds aren’t any better. We break down the benefits of regenerative farming, and share ways to make your dollar stretch if you can’t afford grass-fed meat. Plus, Teri tells us what she personally eats.

  8. How to Trigger Flow States From The 5 Brain Chemicals You Need

    Episode 1559

    Show notes

The Neuroscience of Flow, Peak Performance, Psychedelics, Trauma, Intuition & Consciousness with Steven Kotler

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Steven Kotler, New York Times bestselling author and leading researcher in the neuroscience of flow, to explore how altered states of consciousness influence peak performance, mental health, creativity, intuition, and our perception of reality.

Steven Kotler is a bestselling author of 17 books, including The Art of Impossible and We Are as Gods, and the founder of the Flow Research Collective. For decades, he has studied the neurobiology of peak performance, working with elite athletes, military personnel, and high-performing professionals to understand how people can reliably access flow states.

Dave and Steven begin by exploring the neuroscience of flow and why it may be one of the most powerful altered states available without drugs. Steven explains how dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, anandamide, and endorphins contribute to the flow experience, why his research suggests caffeine can increase flow susceptibility, and how chasing the neurochemical high of peak performance can become dangerous.

They discuss the darker side of flow training, including its potential risks for people prone to mania, the importance of recovery, and why attempting to remain in a flow state indefinitely can undermine performance. Steven shares how his training programs approach sleep, attention, and behavioral changes to help people access flow more consistently.

The conversation then moves into psychedelics, ketamine-assisted therapy, and the neuroscience of trauma. Steven introduces emerging research suggesting that unresolved emotional patterns may involve the brain's predictive processing systems. Dave shares a personal experience involving Joe Rogan and how revisiting an early childhood memory changed his emotional response to public criticism.

Dave and Steven also explore how the brain constructs reality, including the neuroscience of perception, sensory processing, and the flexible boundary between ourselves and our environment. They discuss how flow alters our sense of self, why the brain predicts what we experience before we consciously perceive it, and how these mechanisms may help explain certain spiritual and out-of-body experiences.

Finally, Steven reveals new research investigating the neurological connections between flow, intuition, synchronicity, and purpose. He discusses emerging theories of consciousness, the role of information processing in subjective experience, and how artificial intelligence may change the future of human performance.

    You'll Learn:

    • How flow states influence dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, anandamide, and endorphins, and why Steven's research suggests caffeine may help make the brain more susceptible to flow.
    • Why chasing the neurochemical high of flow can become dangerous, how flow training may affect people prone to mania, and why sleep and recovery are essential for sustained peak performance.
    • How ketamine-assisted therapy may help uncover forgotten emotional experiences and why Steven believes the brain's predictive processing systems play an important role in trauma.
    • How the brain constructs our perception of reality, why sensory information reaches consciousness at different speeds, and what happens to our sense of self during altered states.
    • Why flow may enhance intuition and how emerging neuroscience research is investigating connections between synchronicity, purpose, and the brain's information-processing systems.
    • How Steven is using neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and years of flow training data to develop more accessible methods for improving focus, learning, and performance.

  9. The 6-Minute Morning Routine That Can Change Your Life

    Episode 1558

    Show notes

The Miracle Morning, Visualization, Affirmations, Meditation, Morning Routines, Productivity & the Psychology of Success with Hal Elrod

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Hal Elrod, bestselling author of The Miracle Morning and personal development expert, to explore morning routines, visualization, affirmations, meditation, productivity, circadian rhythms, habit formation, and the psychology of success.

Hal Elrod is the creator of The Miracle Morning, a bestselling book and personal development method that has helped millions improve their daily habits. After surviving a devastating car accident at age 20 and later battling life-threatening cancer, Hal developed a philosophy centered on resilience, personal responsibility, and consistent daily practices.

Dave and Hal challenge the idea that success requires waking up at 5 AM. They discuss chronotypes, circadian biology, and why morning routines should work with your natural sleep patterns. Hal introduces his six-part SAVERS framework, explaining how meditation, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, and journaling can transform your morning in as little as six minutes.

They explore how smartphones disrupt attention, why visualization works best when paired with mental rehearsal, and how these techniques can help overcome procrastination. Hal shares how he used visualization to train for a 52-mile ultramarathon, while Dave discusses advanced meditation, neurofeedback, and the role of emotional states in mental performance.

The conversation also challenges traditional positive affirmations. Hal explains why unrealistic statements often fail and shares a three-step method for setting commitments, identifying motivations, and taking action. Dave connects these practices to consciousness, altered states, and the relationship between intention and human performance.

Finally, Hal reflects on surviving cancer and a near-fatal car accident, sharing how his daily practices helped him build resilience. Dave and Hal discuss the balance between disciplined action, belief, and the mental states that influence our ability to achieve meaningful goals.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in morning routines, visualization, affirmations, meditation, productivity, habit formation, circadian rhythms, overcoming procrastination, mental performance, emotional resilience, consciousness, and the science of personal development.

    You'll Learn:

    • Why waking up at 5 AM isn't necessary for success and how to build a morning routine around your natural circadian rhythm and chronotype
    • How Hal Elrod's six SAVERS practices can improve daily focus, discipline, and emotional well-being in as little as six minutes
    • Why checking your smartphone first thing in the morning can undermine attention, productivity, and your ability to respond intentionally throughout the day
    • How to use visualization and detailed mental rehearsal to overcome procrastination, strengthen motivation, and follow through on difficult goals
    • Why traditional positive affirmations often fail and how to create actionable affirmations based on specific commitments, meaningful reasons, and daily behaviors
    • How meditation, emotional states, and intentional daily habits helped Hal navigate life-threatening health challenges and develop greater resilience

  12. Sleep Expert: 80% of Sleep Problems Come From THIS

    Episode 1555

    Show notes

Sleep Anxiety, Insomnia, Circadian Rhythms, Chronotypes, Sleep Trackers & How to Sleep Better with Dr. Michael Breus

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist, sleep specialist, and internationally recognized sleep expert known as The Sleep Doctor, to explore insomnia, sleep anxiety, circadian rhythms, chronotypes, nighttime awakenings, temperature regulation, sleep medications, wearable sleep trackers, and the science of improving sleep quality.

The conversation challenges conventional thinking about sleep, including whether everyone needs eight hours, why trying harder to fall asleep can make insomnia worse, and how the body's internal clock influences energy, productivity, and recovery.

Dr. Breus explains why he believes fear and anxiety contribute to a substantial proportion of sleep problems. He describes how worrying about falling asleep, waking up at 3 a.m., or feeling exhausted the next day can create a cycle of stress that makes restful sleep increasingly difficult. Dave and Michael explore how cognitive behavioral therapy, emotional regulation, and changing your relationship with sleep may help break that cycle without relying exclusively on medication.

They also examine the science of chronotypes, the biological differences that influence when people naturally feel alert or sleepy. Michael explains why aligning sleep, work, meals, and exercise with your individual circadian rhythm may improve sleep efficiency and daytime performance. Dave shares how changing his exposure to artificial light and adjusting his daily routines helped him shift from being a night owl to maintaining an earlier bedtime.

The discussion then turns to the three physiological conditions Michael considers essential for falling asleep: lowering core body temperature, reducing heart rate, and decreasing anxiety. He explains why simply turning down the thermostat may not be enough to cool your body under the covers, how temperature-controlled mattresses can support thermoregulation, and why something as simple as warming your feet may help your body release heat.

Dave and Michael also discuss blue light, nighttime lighting, and the environmental signals that regulate circadian timing. They examine why light exposure, meal timing, exercise, temperature, and social interaction can influence the body's internal clock, along with the limitations of conventional blue-light-blocking glasses.

The conversation explores why sleeping pills may fail to address the underlying causes of chronic insomnia, how nighttime awakenings can trigger negative thinking, and why the fear of being tired may sometimes become more disruptive than the tiredness itself. Dave shares his experience deliberately restricting sleep while building his businesses, and Michael explains the difference between temporarily functioning with less sleep and maintaining healthy sleep habits over the long term.

They also challenge the growing obsession with sleep scores, deep sleep measurements, and wearable tracking devices. Michael explains why consumer sleep trackers cannot provide the same measurements as a clinical sleep study, why individual sleep-stage estimates should be interpreted cautiously, and why how you feel in the morning remains an important indicator of sleep quality.

Finally, Dave and Michael examine emerging research on creatine supplementation and sleep deprivation, including whether creatine can temporarily support cognitive performance after insufficient sleep. They discuss the potential benefits, limitations, and risks of using supplements to compensate for lost sleep, emphasizing why improving sleep quality should remain the priority.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in insomnia, sleep anxiety, waking up at 3 a.m., circadian rhythms, chronotypes, sleep optimization, blue light, temperature regulation, sleep medications, cognitive behavioral therapy, wearable sleep trackers, deep sleep, creatine, cognitive performance, longevity, and the science of getting better sleep.

    You'll Learn:

    • Why Dr. Michael Breus believes fear and anxiety contribute to many sleep problems, and how worrying about sleep can make insomnia worse
    • How your chronotype influences your ideal bedtime, wake-up time, energy levels, and the amount of sleep you may need
    • Why lowering body temperature, heart rate, and anxiety can help you fall asleep faster and improve sleep quality
    • How nighttime light exposure, meal timing, exercise, and bedroom temperature influence circadian rhythms and sleep
    • Why waking up at 3 a.m. can trigger negative thinking, and how changing your response to nighttime awakenings may help
    • What sleep trackers get wrong about deep sleep, how to interpret your sleep data, and whether creatine can help when you're sleep-deprived

  13. The Science Behind Joint and Cartilidge Repair

    Episode 1554

    Show notes

Explore Calroy's vascular health and joint support supplements, including Arterosil, Vascanox, and Cartigenix, at https://calroy.com/dave

Cartilage Regeneration, Joint Pain, Nitric Oxide, Blood Flow, Muscle Strength & Longevity with Kiran Krishnan

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Kiran Krishnan, research microbiologist, systems biology researcher, and co-founder of Microbiome Labs, to explore cartilage regeneration, joint pain, osteoarthritis, nitric oxide, vascular health, inflammation, muscle growth, gut health, bone density, and the biological mechanisms that influence how the body ages.

Kiran Krishnan is a research microbiologist, health and wellness expert, and entrepreneur who specializes in the human microbiome, gut health, inflammation, and systems biology. Over the past 20 years, he has founded several successful health and supplement companies, including co-founding and leading Microbiome Labs, a leading microbiome therapeutics brand among healthcare professionals. He is also a co-founder and partner in three other health companies. Kiran has conducted and published scientific research, contributed chapters to scientific textbooks, holds global patents, and is a sought-after speaker on human health and the microbiome.

His latest work explores the relationship between blood vessel health, chronic inflammation, and the body's ability to repair damaged cartilage. Through research involving compounds designed to support vascular function, nitric oxide production, and joint health, Kiran is investigating whether age-related tissue degeneration can be slowed or potentially reversed.

Dave opens the conversation by sharing his lifelong struggle with joint pain, including an arthritis diagnosis at age 14 and three knee surgeries. Kiran explains why cartilage degeneration may begin long before symptoms appear and how declining blood flow, damaged microvessels, and chronic inflammation can interfere with the body's natural cartilage repair mechanisms.

They explore the role of the endothelial glycocalyx, the protective lining inside blood vessels, and why nitric oxide production becomes increasingly important with age. Kiran explains how impaired circulation can affect everything from joint lubrication and cartilage health to cognitive performance, digestion, muscle recovery, and sexual function.

Kiran also discusses research involving Cartigenix, a joint support supplement developed using compounds from Boswellia and celery seed. He describes clinical trials involving patients with osteoarthritis, including reported improvements in joint pain, inflammation, and cartilage regeneration, even among older adults with advanced joint degeneration. Dave and Kiran examine how Cartigenix, Arterosil, and Vascanox target different aspects of joint and vascular health, while distinguishing the Cartigenix trial results from the proposed benefits of combining all three products.

The conversation then shifts to practical strategies for improving circulation and metabolic health. Dave and Kiran discuss why walking after meals may help regulate blood sugar, how the cephalic response prepares the digestive system for food, and why excessive endurance exercise may create trade-offs for recovery and long-term health.

They also challenge conventional thinking about muscle growth and longevity. Kiran explains why functional strength may matter more than muscle size, how nitric oxide and microcirculation influence the delivery of amino acids to muscle tissue, and why maintaining healthy blood vessels could be an overlooked factor in preserving strength as you age.

Finally, Kiran previews emerging research on bone regeneration, gut health, and a new postbiotic-based formulation being developed for bone health, particularly during perimenopause and menopause. He shares early findings involving bone repair and osteocyte production, while Dave explains why maintaining strong bones, healthy joints, and efficient circulation should be foundational priorities for anyone interested in longevity.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in cartilage regeneration, osteoarthritis, chronic joint pain, nitric oxide, blood circulation, vascular health, inflammation, muscle growth, strength training, gut health, bone density, menopause, cellular repair, supplements, biohacking, and the science of maintaining physical performance as you age.

    You’ll Learn:

    • Why cartilage breaks down with age and how impaired blood flow and chronic inflammation interfere with joint repair
    • What Kiran's clinical research suggests about cartilage regeneration and joint recovery in people with osteoarthritis
    • How nitric oxide and the endothelial glycocalyx influence circulation, cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and longevity
    • Why functional strength may be more important than muscle size for healthy aging, and how blood flow affects muscle growth and recovery
    • How walking after meals, supporting digestion, and improving vascular function may benefit blood sugar regulation and gut health
    • What emerging research suggests about bone regeneration, postbiotics, and maintaining bone density during menopause and aging

  15. Infections & Cancer, Finasteride Side Effects, Blueberry Benefits, Vitamin D & Fertility, and CoQ10

    Episode 1552

    Show notes

Infections Were Linked to About 1 in 8 Cancer Cases Worldwide

A new global analysis estimates that infections were responsible for roughly 2.3 million new cancer cases in 2024, about 12% of all cancers worldwide. H. pylori and HPV were the largest contributors, followed by hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis C. Host Dave Asprey explores how persistent infections can contribute to cancer through chronic inflammation, DNA damage, altered immune surveillance, and other biological pathways. He explains why this does not mean cancer is contagious or that infection inevitably leads to cancer, but argues that identifying, preventing, and treating infections such as H. pylori, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C can be an overlooked part of a long-term prevention strategy.

What We Really Know About Persistent Finasteride Side Effects

Finasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone into DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase, but that enzyme also participates in pathways involved in neuroactive steroids. Some former users report persistent sexual, cognitive, mood, and physical symptoms after stopping the drug, a collection of symptoms commonly called post-finasteride syndrome. Small studies have reported differences in neurosteroids, gene expression, androgen signaling, and peripheral nerve function among symptomatic former users, but these studies cannot establish that finasteride caused those changes or determine how common persistent symptoms are. Host Dave Asprey examines the evidence between the two extremes, neither dismissing persistent symptoms nor assuming that finasteride permanently damages everyone who takes it. European regulators have also recognized suicidal ideation as a possible adverse effect of oral finasteride, although its frequency remains unknown.

One Cup of Blueberries a Day Improved Measures of Vascular Function

In a six-month randomized controlled trial involving 115 adults with metabolic syndrome, consuming the equivalent of one cup of blueberries per day improved endothelial function and a measure of arterial stiffness, while a half-cup dose did not produce the same effects. Host Dave Asprey explains why describing blueberries simply as “antioxidants” misses much of their biology. Anthocyanins and other polyphenols can interact with gut microbes and influence vascular, inflammatory, and nitric oxide-related signaling. He also examines a small smoothie experiment showing that the polyphenol oxidase found in bananas sharply reduced the circulating metabolites of certain flavan-3-ols, while emphasizing that the experiment did not prove bananas erase the benefits of blueberries.

Vitamin D Matters to Male Reproductive Biology, But It Is Not a Fertility Treatment

Vitamin D receptors are present throughout the male reproductive system, and vitamin D signaling may influence processes involved in sperm motility and fertilization. Observational research has linked low vitamin D with poorer sperm motility, but clinical outcomes are less straightforward. In a randomized trial of 330 vitamin D-insufficient infertile men, supplementation raised vitamin D levels but did not improve overall semen parameters. Researchers observed potentially interesting signals involving spontaneous pregnancy and live birth among a subgroup of men with low sperm counts, but those findings require confirmation. Host Dave Asprey explains why correcting a vitamin D deficiency still makes sense while arguing that male fertility needs to be evaluated as a larger system involving metabolic health, sleep, heat exposure, medications, hormones, micronutrients, toxins, oxidative stress, and semen testing.

    ~~~
    CoQ10 Shows Why a Great Mechanism Does Not Guarantee a Great Treatment
    CoQ10 plays a central role in mitochondrial energy production and electron transport, making it an appealing candidate for diseases involving mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuronal energy failure. Early biological reasoning and smaller studies looked promising, but larger clinical trials have repeatedly failed to show the expected neurological benefits. A randomized trial of 600 people with early Parkinson’s disease found no evidence that high-dose CoQ10 slowed disease progression, while a large Huntington’s disease trial was stopped early for futility. A Phase II ALS trial also found insufficient evidence to justify moving to a larger Phase III study. Host Dave Asprey uses CoQ10 as a broader lesson in biohacking: a supplement can have a legitimate biological function while still failing to improve the clinical outcome you care about.
    Sources:
    -Neurology: CoQ10 in Huntington Disease
    ~~~

This episode is designed for biohackers, longevity enthusiasts, men thinking about hair loss or fertility, and anyone trying to distinguish a compelling biological mechanism from a proven intervention. Host Dave Asprey examines how chronic infections contribute to cancer risk, what the evidence really says about persistent finasteride symptoms, why blueberries may influence vascular health through polyphenol signaling, where vitamin D fits into male fertility, and why CoQ10 is a powerful example of promising biology failing to translate into clinical outcomes. The larger lesson is simple: understand the mechanism, look for meaningful human outcomes, measure your own biology, and avoid confusing a plausible explanation with proof that an intervention works.

Psychic Abilities, Medical Intuition, Energy Healing, Remote Viewing & What Happens When We Die with Julie Ryan

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Julie Ryan, psychic, medical intuitive, inventor, author, entrepreneur, and host of the Ask Julie Ryan podcast, to explore intuition, consciousness, energetic healing, remote viewing, communication with spirits, past lives, dreams, and what Julie says happens as people approach death.

Julie Ryan is a psychic and medical intuitive who says she can sense medical conditions, facilitate energetic healings, communicate with spirits, scan animals, access past lives, and tell how close someone may be to death. She is also an inventor, author, radio host, podcaster, and serial entrepreneur who has founded nine companies across five industries. Her surgical device inventions are sold globally, and unlike many people working in the intuitive space, Julie says her psychic and medical intuitive abilities were learned.

Her book Angelic Attendants: What Really Happens As We Transition From This Life Into The Next explores what she describes as the process of dying, including the presence of angels, deceased family members, friends, pets, and other experiences that may occur near the end of life.

Julie explains how she went from building companies and inventing surgical devices to learning psychic and medical intuitive skills she now teaches to others. She describes how she believes people can remotely sense information about the body, distinguish intuition from ordinary thoughts, and develop abilities that often get ignored or shut down as people grow older.

Dave and Julie explore what it means to “scan” someone from a distance, how Julie says she perceives injuries and illness inside the body, and why she sees intuition as another form of information processing rather than something reserved for a small group of gifted people. Julie also explains why visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners may experience intuitive information differently.

They also discuss energetic healing, emotional trauma, brainwave patterns, spiritual experiences during surgery, communication with deceased loved ones, and the role dreams may play in receiving intuitive information. Dave shares his own experiences with intuition, altered brain states, grief, and the peaceful death of his mother.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in psychic abilities, intuition, consciousness, energy healing, remote viewing, medical intuition, dreams, the afterlife, grief, near-death awareness, spirituality, neuroscience, and the possibility that human perception may extend beyond what most people are trained to notice.

    You’ll Learn:

    • How Julie says psychic and medical intuitive abilities can be learned and trained
    • How she remotely “scans” the body and interprets information about illness, injury, and healing
    • How to tell the difference between intuition and ordinary thoughts or emotions
    • What Julie says happens spiritually during surgery, dreams, and communication with deceased loved ones
    • How her 12 phases of transition may indicate when someone is approaching death
    • Why Dave believes intuition and science can overlap, especially in observation, discovery, and consciousness research

Clean Living, Stress Reduction, Sleep, Skincare & Simple Wellness Habits with Miranda Kerr

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Miranda Kerr, founder of KORA Organics, entrepreneur, model, and longtime wellness advocate, to explore clean living, stress, sleep, skincare, meditation, parenting, and why her approach to health has become simpler over time.

Miranda shares how her mother’s cancer diagnosis when she was 16 changed the way her family looked at everyday ingredients and helped spark her lifelong interest in organic living, holistic health, and reducing unnecessary exposures. That experience later became a driving force behind KORA Organics and her focus on certified organic skincare.

They explore the habits Miranda now prioritizes after years of experimenting with wellness, including morning sunlight, quality food, meditation, sleep, breathwork, strong relationships, and time with family. She also explains how she manages stress while raising four children and running an international company.

Dave and Miranda discuss raising healthy kids without making health feel restrictive, navigating different health values within a family, and why acceptance matters when you cannot control another person’s choices.

The episode also covers clean beauty, plant-based retinol alternatives, non-nano zinc sunscreen, essential oils, rose quartz, intention, and the philosophy behind KORA Organics. Miranda also explains why constantly chasing new wellness tools eventually pushed her back toward a smaller set of foundational habits that consistently make her feel better.

This episode is essential listening for anyone interested in clean living, stress reduction, meditation, sleep, healthy parenting, skincare, organic beauty, biohacking, and building a wellness routine that supports your life rather than taking it over.

    You’ll Learn:

    • Why Miranda’s mother’s health scare changed the way she thought about food, skincare, and everyday ingredients
    • Why her wellness routine has become simpler instead of more complicated over time
    • The foundational habits Miranda prioritizes for energy, stress, sleep, and overall health
    • How meditation, breathwork, morning sunlight, and evening light management fit into her daily routine
    • How she teaches her children about healthy food without creating fear or restriction
    • Why acceptance matters when your partner does not share the same health priorities
    • How Miranda approaches clean beauty, organic skincare, retinol alternatives, and non-nano mineral sunscreen
    • Why KORA Organics incorporates rose quartz, positive words, essential oils, and intention into its products
    • How constantly experimenting with wellness tools can become counterproductive

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Improves Cognitive Scores in a Small Trial

In a 24-week trial involving people with mild cognitive impairment, participants assigned to electrical stimulation at vagus-innervated parts of the ear improved by an average of 3.2 points on a general cognitive test, compared with 0.3 points in a sham-stimulation group. Host Dave Asprey explores the proposed connection between the vagus nerve and the locus coeruleus, a brainstem region involved in attention and learning. He explains why an improved test score is intriguing but does not show that vagus nerve stimulation prevents Alzheimer’s disease—or that a consumer device will reproduce the study’s results.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih+1

Nearly 500 Cat Tumors Reveal Cancer Genes Shared With Humans

Researchers analyzed 493 matched tumor and normal-tissue samples across 13 types of cancer in domestic cats. They found alterations in genes familiar to human cancer researchers, including TP53, and tested whether a mutation called FBXW7 might predict drug sensitivity in lab-grown models of feline mammary tumors. Host Dave Asprey examines why naturally occurring cancers in pets could help scientists investigate treatments across species, while making clear that a promising response in six laboratory tumor models is not a proven treatment for cats or people.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih

Twin-Family Study Challenges a Simple Explanation for Inherited Intelligence

Why do parents and children often score similarly on tests of cognitive ability? Researchers using Germany’s TwinLife data found that genetic transmission explained more of that resemblance than the particular shared-home-environment pathway their model tested. Host Dave Asprey unpacks the distinction between why relatives resemble one another and whether a child’s environment matters. The study does not show that parenting, education, or other experiences have no effect on cognition.pub.uni-bielefeld+1

Mulberry Compounds May Change Gut Bacteria and Metabolism

A review of mulberry research highlights how leaves, fruit, and differently processed extracts contain distinct mixtures of compounds that gut microbes may use. In mouse experiments, a fraction combining mulberry polyphenols and polysaccharides produced more favorable microbiome and metabolic changes than either fraction alone; transferring microbes from treated mice passed along some of those effects. Host Dave Asprey explores the idea that a plant extract’s preparation may matter as much as its name—and why the findings do not yet establish a microbiome benefit from mulberry products in humans.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+1

Magnesium Changes Vitamin D Metabolism—But Not Always in the Same Direction

Magnesium helps regulate the pathways that process vitamin D, but “more magnesium means more vitamin D” is too simple. In a 12-week randomized trial involving 180 adults, magnesium supplementation changed a measured vitamin D metabolite differently depending on participants’ starting vitamin D levels: the modeled difference was positive at 30 ng/mL and negative at 50 ng/mL. Host Dave Asprey explains why this matters to people tracking supplement stacks and bloodwork, while distinguishing a change in a lab marker from a demonstrated health benefit.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih+1

Host Dave Asprey examines brain stimulation and memory, what cat cancers could teach human researchers, how genes and environment contribute to cognitive similarity, whether mulberry’s microbiome effects translate beyond mice, and why nutrient interactions are rarely as simple as a supplement headline suggests. Several studies discussed here predate this week’s coverage; this is a research roundup, not a list of five newly published trials.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih+4

Skin Longevity, Cellular Repair, Red Light Therapy & the Biology of Younger Skin with Young Goose

Host Dave Asprey sits down with Amitay Eshel and Anastasia Khodzhaeva, co-founders of Young Goose, to explore the emerging science of skin longevity, cellular aging, mitochondrial function, exosomes, NAD+, red light therapy, and what it may take to keep skin functioning younger for longer.

Anastasia is a biologist, biohacker, and co-CEO of Young Goose who began her career in biomedical research focused on liver fibrosis and breast cancer before moving into wellness, product development, and longevity-focused skincare. Amitay is co-founder and CEO of Young Goose and host of the Biohacking Beauty podcast, with more than a decade of experience across health, wellness, beauty, and business development. Together, they focus on applying longevity science and performance optimization to skin health.

Amitay and Anastasia explain why wrinkles may be only one visible sign of a much deeper biological process involving declining cellular energy, weakened barrier function, oxidative stress, senescence, and changes in how skin cells repair themselves. They break down how newer approaches to skincare are moving beyond surface-level hydration toward targeting the cellular mechanisms associated with aging.

The conversation goes deep into testing, including a metabolomics-based approach designed to assess skin metabolic age from a small blood sample and analyze 17 different metabolites. They also discuss emerging proteomics testing that can examine thousands of proteins involved in processes such as collagen production, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and cellular repair.

Dave, Amitay, and Anastasia explore some of the most unusual compounds now being used in skin longevity, including methylene blue, NAD+ precursors, spermidine, ergothioneine, superoxide dismutase, copper peptides, ectoin, and gotu kola. They explain how these compounds may interact with mitochondrial energy production, oxidative stress, mitophagy, collagen signaling, and the broader hallmarks of aging.

They also break down red light therapy and why combining light with certain topical compounds may influence the response. The discussion covers methylene blue and electron transport, copper peptides and mitochondrial biogenesis, light-activated DNA repair enzymes, photodamage, reactive oxygen species, and why dose and timing may matter when using red or near-infrared light.

The episode also dives into platelet-derived “Vampire Exosomes,” how exosomes carry cellular instructions through microRNAs, why formulation and stability matter, and how these signaling particles may influence skin repair, inflammation, collagen production, and senescence. Dave and the Young Goose team also discuss growth factors, klotho, senomorphic strategies, cellular longevity, and why extending the functional life of healthy cells may become an important frontier in longevity science.

They also explore practical skincare routines, including how to layer products, what Dave uses while traveling, how airplanes and dry environments affect skin, why aggressive acids may not always fit a long-term skin longevity strategy, and how AI-based skin analysis could make skincare increasingly personalized.

This is essential listening for anyone interested in skin longevity, anti-aging skincare, exosomes, methylene blue, NAD+, red light therapy, mitochondrial health, senescent cells, collagen, peptides, cellular repair, metabolomics, proteomics, biohacking, and the future of personalized skincare.

    You’ll Learn:

    • Why wrinkles may be a downstream sign of deeper cellular aging
    • How skin metabolic age can be assessed using metabolomics and multiple biological markers
    • What methylene blue may do inside mitochondria and why it pairs with red light
    • How NAD+ precursors, spermidine, copper peptides, SOD, and ergothioneine may support skin biology
    • Why platelet-derived “Vampire Exosomes” are being studied for cellular signaling, repair, and senescence
    • How red light therapy interacts with mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and DNA repair
    • Why some traditional acids and surface-level skincare strategies may not address long-term skin function
    • How proteomics and AI could change the way skincare is measured and personalized
    • What Dave and the Young Goose team use to support skin during travel and other high-stress environments
