The Sleeping Almanac: Sleep Stories for Adults from Myth and Fairy Tale

Alternative Health, Drama, Fiction, Health & Fitness

Three hour sleep stories for adults, from the fairy tales and myths you already know. Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, Homer's Odyssey, and the old gods of the North and of Egypt, each retold in slow, calm narration made to be listened to as you fall asleep.

The voice you hear is the creator's own. He cloned it from recordings of his own voice, so every story is told in his voice. If you enjoy falling asleep to it, follow the show so each new story arrives on its own, and leave a rating on Apple Podcasts so other people can find it.

Each episode is researched, written, and narrated to drift over you rather than demand your attention. The pacing is slow. The music never spikes. The goal is the opposite of keeping you awake.

Each season moves through a different story tradition: Norse mythology, Egyptian myth, the great fairy tales, the tales of 1001 Nights, Homer's Odyssey, the myths of ancient Mesopotamia, and the lost books of the Bible. New episodes every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday night, every one of them three hours long.

The almanac is now a book. Norse Myths Retold for Sleep gathers twelve of the oldest stories, retold to be read in a low lamp until the page slips from your hand. On Kindle now, free with Kindle Unlimited: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GX2WLVPD

  1. All Souls Day and Dziady · Church, Candles, Forefathers' Eve, the Full Story · 11 Hour Sleep Story Bonus

    Season 7

    Show notes

Eleven hours for sleep. The complete story is told once, followed by the same quiet ambience through the rest of the night. This bonus accompanies the holiday live stream.

Two nights ago a table was set in a wooden house, and a place was left empty, and a woman said her father's name to a chair. Tonight, in our imagined village, a priest walks past that house on his way home from saying the office for the dead, sees the candle in the window, knows exactly what it means, and keeps walking.

The voice you hear is the creator's own. He cloned it from recordings of his own voice, so every story is told in his voice.

The second of two specials that open Season Seven, the Slavic season. How Christian days of remembrance shared a season with household customs, sometimes overlapping and sometimes meeting opposition. The slips of paper with the names of the dead handed in at the church door. A Polish burial ground on the first of November, lit like a town. A boy from the borderland who grew up to write a short verse play about a chapel at night, three kinds of ghost and one strange line, and how that play became the book a whole nation carries. And a night in Warsaw when the play was closed. Told plainly and slowly, distinguishing historical accounts, poetic invention and our imagined village.

An angel reading aloud to Moses from tablets that were written before the world was made, and a man on a mountain writing it down. Tonight, the Book of Jubilees opened properly: a book that retells Genesis through law and heavenly tablets. The garden of Eden as a temple, with Adam brought in after forty days and Eve after eighty, and the temple incense burned at its gate on the day they left. The animals going quiet. Cain killed by his own house of stone. The book of medicines an angel taught Noah for the sickness the spirits cause. The accuser who proposed the test on the mountain and stood at the altar and was put to shame when the knife stopped, and who was bound for five days behind the people on the night of the lamb so he could not speak against them. Abraham building the first booths with a wreath on his head. Levi counted as a tithe, the tenth son from the youngest, and given the old books to keep and renew. The children with white hair, and the promise that the world is healed by reading. A three hour sleep story, the fifth night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Framed by an imagined copyist taking the book down from his shelf in a round highland church in Ethiopia. The Book of Jubilees, Mashafa Kufale, is scripture in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church today, whole, in Ge'ez, and it was kept by the Jews of Ethiopia too. An authentic book is not the same as a true event, and this one is authentic, written in Hebrew about a hundred and fifty years before Christ, quoted by the church fathers, found in pieces in the Dead Sea caves and under another book in a library in Milan. Season 7

    Show notes

Eleven hours for sleep. The complete story is told once, followed by the same quiet ambience through the rest of the night. This bonus accompanies the holiday live stream.

Tonight there is a place set at the table for somebody who is not coming. The chair has been left empty on purpose, the bowl in front of it is full, and in a moment somebody is going to say a name out loud in a quiet room and mean it. This is Dziady, the night of the grandfathers, recorded in differing household forms across parts of the Slavic lands, and still kept in a few places tonight while you fall asleep.

The voice you hear is the creator's own. He cloned it from recordings of his own voice, so every story is told in his voice.

The first of two Halloween specials that open Season Seven, the Slavic season. The stove that feeds the whole house. An early written account of these people, by a Byzantine secretary in the sixth century. The walk to the graves with bread wrapped in linen. The names said aloud at the head of the table, and the candle and morning dismissal in our pictured house. Told plainly and slowly, distinguishing recorded customs from the imagined house that carries the story.

A year of three hundred and sixty four days. Fifty two weeks exactly, every feast on the same weekday forever, and wrong about the sun. Tonight, the 364 day calendar in the Book of Enoch, Jubilees and several texts among the Dead Sea Scrolls, and what it did to the people who kept it: a feast of the covenant on a Sunday for them and another day for the city, the moon that comes in ten days too soon, the four days at the corners of the year that were the days of Noah's flood, a priest who confronted the Teacher on a day of fasting, an encounter some scholars interpret as a calendar dispute, a letter of rulings addressed to a figure whose identity remains uncertain, and then the thirteen Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice, one for each Sabbath of a quarter, in which the beams and doors of the temple above are told to praise, and the innermost room has a sound of stillness in it, and a copy of which was found in the ruins of the fortress of Masada. A three hour sleep story, the fourth night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Framed by an imagined museum visit and an imagined Ethiopian copyist whose calendar has thirteen months. The Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees are scripture in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church today. One paragraph of sums, and then no more. An authentic book is not the same as a true event, and a real year that real people kept is still real when the sun disagrees. A baby is born in a house before the flood, and when he opens his eyes the whole house lights up like the sun, and his father runs, because in that generation a child who was too beautiful might be one of theirs. Tonight, the birth of Noah as the Book of Enoch tells it, and as the Dead Sea Scrolls tell it longer, in the first person, in a roll so badly damaged it was the last of the seven from the first cave to be opened: Lamech afraid, his wife Bitenosh swearing by the King of the heavens that the child is his, Methuselah walking to the ends of the earth to ask Enoch, and the answer that is a name. Then Noah in his own words, opening the first wine of the new world on a mountain and dividing the earth among his sons. Then Abram on the night of entering Egypt, dreaming of a cedar and a palm tree from one root, and Sarai weeping, and the court poem that describes her, and the two years, and his hands on the king's head. Then the walk round the edges of the land. The Book of Giants recapped in a chapter, the priest Levi taught the woods for the altar by his grandfather, and a dying priest telling his sons to keep the books. A three hour sleep story, the third night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Framed by an imagined visit to the museum in Jerusalem whose roof is shaped like the lid of a jar, and by an imagined copyist in a round highland church in Ethiopia. The Book of Enoch is scripture in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Source claims checked against the texts and scholarship, with uncertain names and damaged passages marked as such. Who put the jars in the cliff? Tonight, the Dead Sea Scrolls and the people who kept and used them: a rule book that measured punishment in days, thirty of them for falling asleep in the meeting, a rule prescribing study during a third of every night, two spirits in every heart, a scroll made of copper listing sixty four treasure locations whose secure identification remains unresolved, the longest scroll of all, hidden under a floor for years, in which God speaks in the first person about a temple that was never built, a war scroll with battle formations and trumpet signals, a book that was found twice, half a century apart, in a Cairo storeroom and a desert cave, a priest from three verses of Genesis raised into a heavenly judge, Josephus, who wrote an ancient account of the Essenes, the oath they swore to keep the books and the names of the angels, and the handwriting model named Enoch, presented in a 2025 study. Two hundred watchmen came down a mountain and would not go back. Tonight, the Book of Enoch tells what was decided about them, and how, and it is not a war in heaven. It is a sentence, carried down by four messengers with four instructions: a word in Noah's ear before anything else, the one who taught the making of knives put under rough stones in a hole in the desert, the giants turned on each other, and their leader bound under the hills for seventy generations. And then, because this is the Book of Enoch, a journey. The man who carried the answer is taken by the hand and walked to the ends of the earth and shown where the winds are kept, the fire in the west that receives every setting of the sun, the mouths of all the rivers, seven mountains of pearl and jacinth and alabaster with a summit of sapphire, the empty place where the stars that came up late are kept, the mountain in the west with four hollows for the dead, one bright with a spring, a tree like no other on the hill where the throne will be, with fruit like the dates of a palm, and, at the far edge of the east, the garden, still there, with the tree that the book says the first man and woman ate from. A three hour sleep story, the first night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Read slowly, in a low voice, beside a lamp in a round highland church in Ethiopia in the rain, by a copyist who is ruling the last leaf of the copy he began in our two Lost Books specials. Retold from the text, chapter by chapter, with source claims checked against primary texts and scholarship. The copyist and his room are an imagined frame. The Book of Enoch is scripture in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. An authentic book is not the same as a true event, and this one is told as what it is: a real book, read the way it was read. For twelve nights this season told the oldest stories on earth the way the clay tells them. Tonight, the other story. The one most people mean when they say Anunnaki: a twelfth planet on a long slow orbit, visitors who came for gold, a worker made in a laboratory out of clay and blood, a memory the tablets are said to keep. It is told whole, at full length, the way the people who believe it tell it, with its wonder intact. And after each part, once and plainly, what the object is: what the word means in the dictionary, what the seal in Berlin actually shows, what the flood poem actually says, what the chromosome and the green tablets actually are. Nobody is scolded. Nobody is lectured. If you have the twelve nights in you, you decide; if not, you are welcome anyway, and you may simply sleep. A three hour sleep story set in a museum study room after closing, with two things on the table: a four thousand year old cylinder seal and a paperback from 1976. Both are real. Told with dignity for the man who wrote the book and for everyone who loves it. This is the thirteenth night of Season Five, standing outside the twelve, and it closes the season. Erra and Ishum is the only poem in this season whose author put his own name at the end and told us how he wrote it. He says it came to him in a dream, and that he wrote it down in the morning without adding a line. Tonight is a god of war who cannot settle, the Seven who were made to be used, the herald who talks him down, the statue whose gold went dull, the empty seat, and a tablet on a peg beside a door. A slow, calm 3 hour sleep story to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Settle in, close your eyes, and let it drift over you. The pacing is slow, the voice is soft, and the music never spikes. You do not have to follow it. You do not have to remember any of it in the morning. These are retellings drawn from the real tablets and the real history. Where the old stories turn toward fear or cruelty, we turn gently toward comfort, choosing the telling that serves a calm night. Where scholars disagree, the disagreement is said out loud rather than smoothed over. Season Five of The Sleeping Almanac: Mesopotamia. Twelve nights. Three hours of calm music from the world of Celtic myth, made to help you fall asleep and stay asleep through the whole night. A bonus for the quiet nights, the same music playing tonight on our live sleep stream, three hours with no talking at all.

Tonight is a candlelit hall on a western coast in the last nights of October, the sea on the rocks somewhere below and the old year turning toward Samhain, carried in one long piece that returns in a darker, slower form, so the music keeps drifting instead of looping every few minutes. The music belongs to Cerridwen, the Welsh keeper of the cauldron of wisdom.

The music is original to the show, made with AI music tools and mixed for sleep: no melody that swells, no percussion, nothing sudden.

Two nights ago a table was set in a wooden house, and a place was left empty, and a woman said her father's name to a chair. Tonight, in our imagined village, a priest walks past that house on his way home from saying the office for the dead, sees the candle in the window, knows exactly what it means, and keeps walking. The first of two Halloween specials that open Season Seven, the Slavic season. The stove that feeds the whole house. An early written account of these people, by a Byzantine secretary in the sixth century. The walk to the graves with bread wrapped in linen. Anzu steals the Tablet of Destinies while its owner is in the bath, and that is the best opening of any story in Mesopotamian literature. The most powerful object in this whole world, the thing that makes whatever you say become true, goes out of the door in the talons of a lion headed eagle, and everything stops.
