  1. Not Sure You Want a Divorce? How to Prepare Before You Decide, with Jenny Hutt

    Episode 129

    Show notes

Should I stay or should I go? If you’re asking yourself “Should I get a divorce?”, I sat down with divorce attorney Jenny Hutt, who is separated from her husband, to talk about why gray divorce has doubled since 1990, why midlife divorce so often hits when the kids leave and an empty nest marriage goes quiet, and what to know before facing divorce after 50. If you’ve looked across the table at the person you’ve built a life with and realized you have nothing to say, you’re not alone.

In this episode, Tamsen sits down with divorce attorney Jenny Hutt, a New York family law attorney and certified divorce mediator, Of Counsel at Wisselman Harounian Family Law, and host of the Just Jenny podcast, to talk about why so many marriages end in midlife and how to make an honest decision about your own.

Jenny, who is separated from her husband, explains why so many couples wait until the kids are out of the house, how losing a parent can bring up the question “How much time do I have left?”, and why the “guns blazing” divorce you see on TV is not how it really works. Tamsen opens up about her own divorce 15 years ago, the shame she felt, and the $100,000 in marital debt she had to dig out of.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    - Why so many marriages end after the kids leave home, and what the empty nest can reveal

    - How losing a parent and facing your own mortality can change the way you see your marriage

    - What gray divorce is, and why divorce after 50 has doubled since 1990

    - Why it’s okay not to know yet: “If you wanna reconcile tomorrow, go reconcile. There is no judgment.”

    - The four things every divorce comes down to: assets, support, parenting and custody

    - Why a good settlement is one where “nobody’s happy, but everybody can live with it”

    - How a consultation with a divorce attorney can help you understand your rights before you decide anything

    - Why the identity shift, from taking off your rings to hearing “Just one?”, can be as hard as the financial hit

Jenny practices family law in New York, and divorce laws vary from state to state, so talk with an attorney where you live about your own situation.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your marriage can be saved or whether it’s time to go, this episode will help you think it through honestly, without shame and without judgment.

  2. Told You're Too Much, Too Different or Too Late? How to Stop Shrinking to Fit, with Misty Copeland

    Episode 128

    Show notes

Ever been told you're too much, too different, or too late? Misty Copeland heard it all and became a legend anyway. In this episode, she shares how to stop shrinking to fit, how to speak up for yourself even when the room isn't built for you, and what she's learned about perimenopause and a body that changes every day.

Sitting down with Tamsen Fadal on The Tamsen Show, Misty looks back on a career built on proving people wrong. She didn't take her first ballet class until 13, was told she was "too athletic," and still became the first Black woman promoted to principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre. She tells Tamsen how she rehearsed hard conversations before walking into the director's office, danced Firebird at the Met on six stress fractures, and gave her farewell performance with ABT in October 2025. After a full hip replacement in December 2025, she was performing at the Oscars three months later. And when Tamsen asks about perimenopause, Misty admits she was skeptical "until it hit me."

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - How to stop shrinking yourself to fit someone else's idea of "right"

    - How to speak up when the room isn't built for you, and how to prepare for those hard conversations first

    - Why a late start doesn't have to hold you back

    - How to find a safe place, and the mentors, who help you grow

    - What perimenopause can really feel like, and why not all symptoms look the same

    - How to be patient with a body that changes every day

    - How to take on something new after a setback, one step at a time: "Let's see what happens"

    - How to use your seat at the table to open doors for the women coming after you

If you've ever been made to feel like you don't fit, this conversation will remind you that you get to decide what's next.

  3. Trust Your Gut: How to Spot Manipulation Early with Bethany Joy Lenz

    Episode 127

    Show notes

Bethany Joy Lenz, star of One Tree Hill and author of the new novel The Betrayal of Cora Wexford, spent years on TV every week while secretly living inside a cult.

She opens up about why becoming a mother gave her the reason to leave, why the leaving was survival and the real healing came after, and how being on set kept her grounded through it all.

Tamsen and Joy talk about why so many capable women end up doubting themselves, why psychological abuse behind closed doors is so rarely taken seriously, and how her new novel, set in 1888, mirrors so much of her real life.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - How a good thing can slowly turn into control

    - Her rule now: "If you feel like something's weird, it's weird"

    - The 1 question that reveals how someone really treats you, and the response to watch for

    - How to trust your gut again after years of second-guessing yourself

    - What her late ADHD diagnosis taught her about how hyperactivity shows up in women

  4. Feeling Stuck? The Proven Method to Break Free with Psychologist Angela Duckworth

    Episode 126

    Show notes

Most of us have been taught that when something is not working, the answer is more discipline, more willpower, and more effort. Angela Duckworth, the University of Pennsylvania psychologist and bestselling author of Grit, built her career studying that idea. Her new book, Situated, asks us to look at everything surrounding that effort.

In this conversation, she explains how the people, places, objects, and cultures around us shape our motivation, behavior, and even who we become.

Angela shares the terrifying moment she nearly lost her mother during a snorkeling trip—and why it taught her to stop fighting the current and ask for help. She also opens up about a difficult period in her marriage that showed her how easily we can mistake the effects of someone’s circumstances for flaws in their character.

Tamsen and Angela discuss why we attach moral value to doing things the hard way, how the people closest to us change what feels possible, and where to begin when we cannot simply leave the job, home, or situation shaping us.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    - Why trying harder can keep us trapped in a losing situation

    - The four parts of your environment to examine when you feel stuck

    - How objects within three feet of you influence your behavior

    - Why different people bring out different versions of who you are

    - What you can change when your biggest circumstances are outside your control

  5. The Workout Plan for Your Brain with Neurophysiologist Louisa Nicola

    Episode 125

    Show notes

Is walking enough? Is Pilates enough? How heavy should you actually be lifting? If you’ve ever wondered which exercise really protects your brain as you age, especially through perimenopause and menopause, this conversation gives you the exact weekly plan.

In this episode, Tamsen sits down with clinical neurophysiologist and Alzheimer’s researcher Louisa Nicola, founder of Neuro Athletics and host of The Neuro Experience podcast, to talk about why she calls exercise medicine for the brain. Louisa explains that, outside of medication, exercise is the most powerful intervention we have to lower our risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, a disease that affects far more women than men.

Tamsen opens up about the short-term memory loss and brain fog that scared her during perimenopause, and Louisa breaks down what happens inside your brain when you walk, sprint and lift, from BDNF and lactate to the myokines your muscles release. Then she builds out a workout plan for your brain: two days a week of heavy compound lifting at around 80% of your one-rep max, one Norwegian 4x4 interval session, zone 2 cardio and 10,000 steps a day.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    - Why exercise is the best non-drug intervention for lowering Alzheimer’s risk

    - How heavy to lift for brain health, and why compound moves like squats and deadlifts matter most

    - Why Pilates is a great add-on, but not enough on its own

    - The surprising link between leg strength and brain aging: “the larger the legs, the larger the brain”

    - What zone 2 training (about 65% of your max heart rate) does for the hippocampus and memory

    - How to raise your VO2 max with the Norwegian 4x4, how to estimate it with the 12-minute Cooper test, and why she wouldn’t rely on your wearable

    - What she says about creatine for the brain, omega-3s, and the p-tau217 blood test and APOE4 gene test you can ask your doctor about

If you’ve ever wondered whether your workouts are doing anything for your brain, this episode will help you build a plan that protects your memory now and decades from now.

  6. The Complete Menopause Episode: 8 Experts on Belly Fat, Brain Fog, Sleep and Hormones

    Episode 124

    Show notes

Menopause and perimenopause can leave you with questions about belly fat, brain fog, sleep problems and whether hormone therapy could help. Your jeans fit differently. You’re losing your train of thought. You’re exhausted, but you can’t sleep. Where do you start when so much feels unfamiliar?

For World Menopause Month, Tamsen brings eight leading doctors and researchers together in one episode to help you understand what’s changing and what deserves attention. These are the conversations she wishes she’d heard before she was struggling to read the teleprompter at work, leaving herself notes and wondering why she didn’t feel like herself.

You’ll hear from Dr. Sharon Malone, Dr. Lisa Mosconi, Dr. Shelby Harris, Dr. Rocio Salas-Whalen, Dr. Vonda Wright, Dr. Kelly Casperson, Dr. Avrum Bluming and Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz. Eight experts, different perspectives and answers you can come back to—all in one place.

    Inside the episode:

    - Why you can still have periods and be in perimenopause—and why a single hormone blood test may be misleading

    - Whether menopause brain fog can improve, and why women’s experiences vary

    - Why more time in bed may not mean better sleep, and how cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) works

    - The difference between visible belly fat and visceral fat around your organs

    - Why bone health needs attention earlier than you might think

    - How menopause can affect sexual anatomy, arousal and orgasm

    - What to understand about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and breast cancer risk

    - How to evaluate menopause supplements and “hormone balance” claims before spending your money

You don’t have to remember everything or make eight changes tomorrow. Start with the moment that makes you think, “Wait, that’s happening to me.” Write down your question and bring it to your next appointment.

If a woman in your life keeps telling you she doesn’t feel like herself, share this episode with her. And if these conversations have helped you, follow The Tamsen Show and leave a rating and review.

  8. Why Women Are Taught to Doubt What They Know with Psychiatrist Dr. Ellen Vora

    Episode 122

    Show notes

HELP US WIN A SIGNAL AWARD - VOTE FOR THE TAMSEN SHOW HERE

Women learn early which parts of themselves make other people comfortable. After enough years, that performance can begin to feel like our identity, and the intuition underneath it goes quiet.

Dr. Ellen Vora spent much of her life inside that worldview. A Yale- and Columbia-trained psychiatrist, she built her life around science and skepticism. Then, during an acupuncture treatment, Ellen received a message she couldn’t explain away, and it opened a question her training couldn’t answer: When someone dies, does the relationship actually end? That experience forced her to reconsider what she believed about grief, intuition, and the limits of what we can prove.

Today, Ellen shares the full story behind her new book, Season of the Witch: A Psychiatrist’s Case for Magic, and why women are taught to give up essential parts of themselves in order to be taken seriously. She argues that we’ve been missing something, and the way back starts in the body.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    - How being agreeable and low-maintenance can become a form of self-abandonment

    - Why women have been taught to distrust their intuition

    - How to distinguish intuition from anxiety, and the ways the body signals yes and no

    - Why menopause can represent a rebirth rather than a disappearance

  9. Is Your Menopause Care Covered? What Insurance Companies Don’t Tell You

    Episode 121

    Show notes

HELP US WIN A SIGNAL AWARD - VOTE FOR THE TAMSEN SHOW HERE

What do women need to know about menopause care, menopause treatment, insurance coverage and their rights in the workplace?

Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, attorney, women’s health advocate and author of When in Menopause, joins me to talk about the systems surrounding perimenopause and menopause that most of us never think about until we need them.

Jennifer has spent years fighting for women, from helping lead the movement to end the tampon tax to advocating for better menopause care, research, treatment access and workplace protections. In this conversation, we break down what is changing, where women are still falling through the cracks and what we can actually do about it.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    - Why menopause care and treatment still aren’t uniformly covered by health insurance

    - Why vaginal estrogen isn’t currently covered by Medicare

    - What states are doing to expand access to menopause treatment

    - What rights women actually have when it comes to menopause in the workplace

    - Why workplace accommodations without discrimination protections can be complicated

    - What to consider before disclosing menopause symptoms at work

    - How to better advocate for yourself in the doctor’s office

    - How to navigate the explosion of menopause supplements, creams and products being marketed to women

    - Why Jennifer believes better care, education, research and treatment access could make a bigger difference than workplace accommodations alone

    - How women can get involved in menopause advocacy without becoming policy experts

This is one of those conversations that makes you realize how much of the menopause experience is shaped by systems most women have never been taught to think about. The more we understand how they work, the better equipped we are to ask for what we need.

  16. What Every Woman Should Know About Low Libido and the Pink Pill

    Episode 114

    Show notes

HELP US WIN A SIGNAL AWARD - VOTE FOR THE TAMSEN SHOW HERE

Why does women's sexual health still get treated as an afterthought, and what would it take to finally change that? Cindy Eckert is the founder and CEO of Sprout Pharmaceuticals and the woman behind Addyi, the first and only FDA-approved treatment for low sexual desire in women. In this episode, she explains hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), the biological condition behind low libido that affects millions of women and is still routinely dismissed as stress, aging, or a relationship problem.

Cindy breaks down why women are told their low libido is emotional while men's sexual health issues are treated as biological, what actually happens in the brain when desire disappears, and the three question checklist she wants every woman to bring to her next doctor's appointment. She also explains why 80% of women who brought up low libido with their doctor were simply told it was normal, and what women's sexual health should actually look like when it's taken seriously.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - What HSDD is and why it's rooted in biology, not emotion

    - Why women's sexual health has been dismissed as psychological instead of medical

    - How the double standard in FDA drug review affects treatments for women

    - Why 80% of women raising low libido with their doctor are told it's normal

    - The three questions to ask before accepting "that's just aging"

    - How Addyi works and who it's for

    - What changed with Addyi's newest approval for postmenopausal women

If you've ever felt like your desire just switched off and been told that's normal, been handed a vague explanation instead of a real answer, or wondered if something is wrong with you instead of your body, this episode will help you understand the biology behind it, so you stop blaming yourself for something that was never your fault.

Addyi (flibanserin) is for women under 65 with acquired, generalized HSDD who have not had problems with low sexual desire in the past. It is not for men. Full safety information, including boxed warning on alcohol interaction, is available at http://addyi.com/pi.

  20. Why Does Rejection Feel So Intense? (with ADHD Expert Dr. Sasha Hamdani)

    Episode 110

    Show notes

Why do some of us experience rejection, criticism, and disappointment so intensely—and what we can we actually do about it? Dr. Sasha Hamdani is a board-certified psychiatrist, ADHD specialist, and author of Too Sensitive: Rejection, Resilience, and the Science of Feeling Deeply. In this episode, she explains rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD)—the intense emotional pain triggered by perceived rejection or criticism that affects the majority of people with ADHD, especially women.

Dr. Hamdani breaks down why dropping estrogen during perimenopause makes emotional sensitivity worse, what's actually happening in your brain when one comment sends you into a spiral, and the three tools she uses herself to stop it. She also explains why women who've been on antidepressants for years with no relief may have been misdiagnosed—and what high-achieving women look like from the outside vs. what's really going on inside.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

-What rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) is and why it's so common in ADHD

-How RSD shows up in friendships, relationships, and the workplace

-Why perimenopause can make emotions and ADHD symptoms feel harder to manage

-Why high-achieving women may hide rejection sensitivity behind perfectionism, overpreparing, and people-pleasing

-How to tell the difference between what actually happened and the story your brain created about it

-Tools for helping your brain catch up before you react or start spiraling

-Why some women treated for anxiety and depression for years may actually need to be evaluated for ADHD

-How to start tracking your own patterns before you talk to a professional

If you've ever lost an entire night replaying one conversation, convinced yourself someone is upset with you, or felt a wave of shame hit your body before you could even think it through, this episode will help you understand what’s happening between the feeling and the reaction, so your first emotional response doesn’t get to make the decision for you.
