What if you thought something more was going on with your child, but your doctors said, "Don't bother with testing"? Would you stand your ground or follow their advice? This is a situation many parents face, especially when it comes to testing for type 1 diabetes (T1D) without a family history.

But the facts are that 95% of those diagnosed have no family history, which means testing is even more important. When it happened to Kenzi, here's what she and her family did.

  2. Here’s Why (and How) We Microdose Ozempic & Mounjaro with T1D

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Sixty-two percent of U.S. adults with type 1 diabetes are living with overweight or obesity. That’s nearly identical to the general population, according to a 2023 Johns Hopkins study published in Annals of Internal Medicine, and it shatters the old myth that T1D is a “thin person’s disease.”https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2023/overweight-and-obesity-in-people-with-type-1-diabetes-nearly-same-as-general-population

So what’s going on? Part of the answer may be how we’ve been taught to manage T1D: treat the blood sugar with insulin and call it a day. But insulin isn’t the only hormone in the picture. Hunger, fullness, and how quickly food leaves your stomach are all driven by other hormones, and when those are ignored, taking care of your body gets a whole lot harder.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, I sit down with Amanda Mueller, better known online as Bolus and Biceps, for an honest conversation about using GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro with type 1 diabetes. We get into our own experiences, what surprised us, and the practical strategies we recommend for anyone thinking about adding a GLP-1 to their insulin routine.

If you’ve been wondering whether a GLP-1 could help you, this episode is for you.

Want expert support getting started? Rachel at The Diabetes Collective (https://www.thediabetescollective.net/) and Chris Sozke (https://diabetesnp.com/) both help people with T1D navigate GLP-1s.

GLP-1 medications are not FDA-approved for type 1 diabetes, and this episode is not medical advice. Talk with your healthcare team before making any changes to your treatment.

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Most continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) need regular changes and careful upkeep. Eversense lasts a full year, which can be a relief for people dealing with skin irritation, accuracy concerns, and frequent sensor swaps.

On the latest episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, I talk with Brian Hansen, President of Senseonics' CGM division, and COO Mukul Jane about the Eversense 365-day implantable CGM.

We discuss the implanted sensor, removable transmitter, and optical technology behind its readings, along with what’s next and the company’s plans for a transmitter-free system.

I also share my experience using Eversense with automated insulin delivery (AID) and why CGM reliability matters when it affects insulin dosing. We cover what getting an implant involves, how the system works, and how to access it if your doctor doesn’t offer it.

Listen for a practical look at Eversense and the future of diabetes technology.

  5. How to Get What You Need with Type 1 Diabetes

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

I’ve spent years learning how to speak up for the diabetes care I need—and I know how frustrating it can be when a provider or insurance company says no.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, I talk with Lily Mees and Paola Acevedo about how people with diabetes can advocate for themselves and navigate a complicated healthcare system. We discuss preparing for appointments, asking clear questions, finding a care team that listens, and what to do when insurance denies a medication or device.

Lily shares why self-advocacy is a skill you can practice and how to make the most of a short doctor’s visit. Paola explains formularies, prior authorizations, step therapy, appeals, and why detailed documentation can make a difference.

We also talk about diabetes technology and treatment options, including CGMs, pumps, and inhaled insulin. If you’ve ever felt dismissed, struggled to get coverage, or wondered what to ask your provider, this conversation offers practical ways to take a more active role in your care.

  6. Curing Type 1 Diabetes: Real Science with Seraxis CEO, Will Rust

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

"A cure is five years away."

If you've lived with type 1 diabetes for any length of time, you've heard it. Maybe at diagnosis, maybe from a well-meaning doctor, maybe on repeat for decades. Then five years pass, and five more, and the question gets harder to ignore: where is it?

That frustration is fair. So is the skepticism. But Seraxis CEO Will Rust believes we are closer to a cure for T1D than we've ever been, and he makes his case in this episode.

We dig into what Seraxis is actually building, how its approach differs from Eledon's, what FDA approval would really mean for people living with T1D, and why he thinks hope is warranted this time rather than naive.

Could a cure happen in our lifetime? Listen, and decide for yourself.

I've been living with type 1 for most of my life, and I've heard the five-year promise more times than I can count. This conversation left me feeling something I don't feel often about cure research: cautiously, genuinely optimistic. I hope it does the same for you.

Beth shares what it’s like to hit 40 mg/dL twice in one night, how severe lows can affect the body and mind long after they’re treated, and why people with diabetes need support instead of judgment.

Watch this episode for an honest conversation about diabetes burnout, relationships, self-advocacy, cure research, and the emotional work of managing blood sugar every day.

We also discuss what family members, friends, and partners can do to offer meaningful support—and why realistic hope matters for the future of T1D treatment.

Living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) requires resilience every day. In this episode, I speak with therapist Lacee Musgrove about diabetes burnout, anxiety, self-compassion, perfectionism, and the pressure to manage everything perfectly.

We discuss how to navigate difficult moments, learn from mistakes, ask for help, and recognize the strength people with type 1 diabetes already have.

Lacee also shares how parents can support children and teens with more connection and less shame. I think we could all use more of that.

What's something about chronic illness resilience you're trying to work through right now? Share it below if you feel inclined!

  9. This Guy Has Tried Nearly Every Insulin Pump

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Today, I’m sitting down with Justin Eastzer, better known online as @diabe_tech, to talk about something I think many people with diabetes can relate to: figuring out what actually works for YOU!

Justin knows a lot about diabetes technology, but this conversation goes beyond insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). In this special episode, we talk about the trial and error that comes with using these devices, working with your diabetes educator, dealing with frequent lows, and learning to recognize what your own body is telling you.

We also get into exercise, emergency preparedness, what happens when diabetes technology fails, and why even the BEST diabetes tech can only help if it fits into your real life...

Whether you’re thinking about trying a new insulin pump or CGM, already use diabetes technology, or are simply trying to feel a little more confident managing diabetes day to day, there’s a lot to take away from this conversation.

Come hang out with us! Thanks for tuning in.

  10. Nobody Warned Us That T1D Would Screw Up Our Relationship With Food

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Can diabetes change your relationship with food without you even realizing it?

In this episode, I’m joined by registered dietitian and certified eating disorder specialist Lauren Newman to talk about the side of diabetes care that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough: when managing blood sugar starts affecting how you eat, think about food, and feel about your body.

We talk about food guilt, fear of carbs, restrictive food rules, binge cycles, compulsive exercise, insulin omission, insulin stacking to “earn” food, and the pressure to chase a perfect CGM graph at any cost.

We also get into the gray area between disordered eating and eating disorders—and why people with diabetes are so often missed or misunderstood.

Lauren explains why hunger, fullness, and intuitive eating can be especially complicated with diabetes, what she sees most often in her practice, and how GLP-1 medications can affect food noise and disordered eating behaviors.

I also share some of my own experience with restriction, rebellion, and learning to approach food with more flexibility while living with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.

Most importantly, we talk about what to do if you recognize yourself in these patterns—and why you don't have to wait until things become “bad enough” to get help.

Lauren Newman is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes care and education specialist, and certified eating disorder specialist. Through her virtual practice, she and her team support people across the country with diabetes-related food struggles, body image concerns, and the overlap between diabetes care and disordered eating.

In this episode, I talk with Josh Webb about what a year of wearable data can reveal about T1D, overnight blood sugars, and the patterns that shape the next day.

We break down how sleep quality, heart rate, recovery, and activity may influence blood sugar stability, and why more personalized diabetes management could change the way we make decisions.

If you’ve ever felt like diabetes is unpredictable, this conversation offers a clearer way to understand the cycle. It doesn't have to be so chaotic after all!

SENSITIVE TOPIC WARNING: This episode discusses disordered eating, insulin restriction, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If you or someone you love is struggling with disordered eating or insulin restriction, please seek support from a qualified healthcare professional.

Insulin restriction is not a safe or effective method for weight loss. It can lead to severe hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), DKA, hospitalization, and life-threatening complications and should never be encouraged as a weight-loss strategy.

    --

In this episode of The Diabetes Nerd Podcast, I sit down with Carly Lynette, a 21-year-old diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 3, to talk candidly about her experience with disordered eating, insulin restriction, and recovery.

Carly shares how concerns about food, body image, and weight eventually led her to restrict insulin for several years, resulting in severe chronic high blood sugar, repeated episodes of DKA, hospitalizations, isolation, and significant impacts on her health and education. She also discusses the decision that helped her begin moving forward and the challenges of maintaining recovery.

We also talk about Carly’s experience using a GLP-1 medication to manage the intense food-related thoughts and appetite challenges that contributed to her disordered eating. Carly explains why this treatment has been helpful for her, while we discuss the complexities of using GLP-1 medications in people with T1D and why individual medical guidance matters.

Throughout the conversation, we also discuss the relationship between T1D, appetite regulation, food noise, body image, and disordered eating, as well as the gaps Carly encountered when trying to get support.

Carly is open about where she is today, including her return to school, her interest in a career helping others, and her desire to advocate for people living with T1D and disordered eating.

  13. Exercising Without Lows: We Do It This Way!

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

Most people believe exercising in a fasted state with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is dangerous, but I know that's not the whole story!

In this episode, Sami Parker and I break down how we make fasted workouts work without living in fear of lows or highs. If you are tired of workout advice that feels too cautious, too vague, or just plain wrong, this conversation is for you.

Sami, a registered nurse (RN) and personal trainer with 14 years of T1D experience, shares her simple approach to exercising on an insulin pump in a fasted state without turning it into a whole production. I talk about how understanding insulin, basal rates, and exercise science can make movement feel safer and more manageable. Together, we get real about insulin on board (IOB), activity mode, and the freedom that comes from learning what actually works for your body.

You will hear why aggressive carb loading can make exercise messier, how quick glucose can help when you need it, and why paying attention to your own patterns matters more than waiting for perfect rules. If you have ever worried that working out will wreck your blood sugar, this episode offers a smarter, more confident way forward.

This episode is for active people with T1D, parents, caregivers, and anyone who wants straight talk instead of sugar-coated advice. If you want to feel more in control of exercise and less afraid of blood sugar swings, this one is worth your time.

If you've ever wished your CGM or insulin pump could do just a little more, this episode is for you.

I'm joined by Greg Badros, founder of Gluroo and father of a son with type 1 diabetes, to talk about how he built an app to fill the gaps left by today's diabetes technology.

Together, we dive into everything from logging meals, exercise, insulin, and low treatments to identifying patterns that can help you better understand what's affecting your blood sugar day-to-day.

We also talk about how Gluroo works alongside your existing diabetes devices, why it was designed to reduce the mental burden of diabetes rather than add to it, and how its companion apps, Got CGM and FlashSnack, make managing diabetes even easier.

Whether you're living with type 1 diabetes yourself or caring for someone who is, I think you'll come away with a better understanding of how the right tools can help you spend less time managing diabetes and more time living your life.

What does the stock market have to do with curing type 1 diabetes?

    Actually...a lot.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, my friend Julia Flaherty joins me to pull back the curtain on the business side of diabetes research. We talk about how biotech companies raise money, why investors get excited about clinical trial results, what happens when a company gets acquired, and why so many people living with T1D are becoming shareholders themselves.

If you've ever wondered why a company's stock jumps after a promising study—or how someone could potentially invest in the future of diabetes research—this episode is for you.

This isn't investment advice. It's simply an honest, easy-to-understand conversation about the money that helps fund the race toward better treatments and, hopefully, one day, a cure for type 1 diabetes.

  20. He’s Off Mealtime Insulin: Here’s His Tzield Story

    Season 1

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

What if a newly diagnosed person with type 1 diabetes (T1D) could dramatically reduce their insulin needs, or even stop taking mealtime insulin altogether?

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, we sit down with Jacob, who was diagnosed with T1D in February 2026 and enrolled in the Beta Preserve clinical trial just weeks later. The study is exploring whether two rounds of Tzield (teplizumab) can preserve insulin-producing beta cells more effectively than a single treatment.

Just months after beginning treatment, Jacob has cut his basal insulin by more than half and no longer needs mealtime insulin. He shares what it was like to undergo 12 consecutive days of Tzield infusions, the side effects he experienced, and how his blood sugars and daily life have changed.

We also discuss how Tzield works, why early screening for type 1 diabetes is becoming increasingly important, and what this research could mean for the future of T1D treatment. Most importantly, Jacob explains why he hopes his story inspires others to consider screening, clinical trials, and opportunities to preserve beta cell function after diagnosis.

If you live with type 1 diabetes, care for someone who does, or want to stay informed about the latest diabetes research, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

Would you consider participating in a clinical trial like this? Have questions about Tzield or T1D screening? Leave a comment. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
