Why Weight Loss Gets Harder After 40: Hormones, GLP-1s & Sustainable Habits - with Nurse Practitioner, Casey Peterson
Season 1, Episode 418

Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
Have you ever wondered why the strategies that once worked for weight loss don't seem to work the same way after 40? Or why you can know exactly what you need to do for your health but still struggle to follow through?
🌟You're not alone.
For many women, the years after 40 bring a new set of challenges. Hormonal changes, disrupted sleep, increased stress, and competing responsibilities can influence how we feel, how we care for ourselves, and how consistently we can maintain healthy habits.
And when the familiar advice to simply eat less and move more doesn't seem to deliver the results you expect, it's easy to become frustrated, blame yourself, or assume you just need more discipline.
But what if the answer isn't trying harder? What if it's learning to approach your health differently?
In this episode of Direction Not Perfection, we're exploring the realities of sustainable weight loss and women's health after 40, the conversations surrounding GLP-1 medications, and the challenges that keep so many women from following through on the changes they want to make.
We'll discuss why understanding what to do is only part of the equation, how to build habits that work in real life, and why prioritizing your own well-being isn't selfish. It's an important part of caring for yourself and the people you love.
In This Episode, We Explore:
👉Weight loss after 40: How hormonal changes, sleep, stress, and other factors can influence weight management as women age.
👉Why "eat less, move more" isn't the whole story: Understanding why weight management can become more complicated and why individualized strategies matter.
👉The conversation surrounding GLP-1 medications: Sorting through the noise and considering how medication fits into a broader approach to health, nutrition, movement, and long-term support.
👉The guilt of putting yourself first: Why so many women struggle to prioritize their own needs when everyone else seems to need something from them.
👉Knowing versus doing: Why having the right information doesn't automatically translate into consistent action.
👉The importance of a followable plan: Creating realistic routines and sustainable habits that work with your life instead of adding another layer of pressure.
👉Sleep, stress, and self-care: Why supporting your overall well-being matters, especially during seasons when life feels particularly demanding.
👉Progress over perfection: Moving away from all-or-nothing thinking and learning to make meaningful changes without expecting yourself to get everything right. The Takeaway
Your health journey will change as you move through different seasons of life. The habits, routines, and strategies that worked in the past may need to evolve, and that doesn't mean you're failing.
Sustainable progress starts with understanding what you need now, building a plan that fits your reality, and giving yourself permission to prioritize your well-being without guilt.
You don't need another perfect plan. You need a direction you can keep moving toward.
💛Because your health journey doesn't need perfection. It just needs direction.
If this episode resonates with you, share it with a woman who needs the reminder that taking care of herself matters, too!

From Perfectionism to Resilience: What Chronic Illness Can Teach Us About Healing- Author, Alayna Bellquist

Chronic Illness and Healing: The Role of Resilience, Mindset & the Nervous System
🤔What if healing requires us to look beyond the diagnosis?
When navigating chronic illness, medical treatment can be an essential part of the journey. But supporting our overall well-being may also involve exploring the connections between our physical health, emotional experiences, mindset, stress response, and nervous system.
In this episode of Direction Not Perfection, we explore resilience, adaptation, vulnerability, and the many layers of navigating a chronic health condition. Inspired by our guest's personal experience with chronic Lyme disease and her book, Resilient By Nature: A Memoir of Curing Chronic Lyme Disease, this conversation offers an opportunity to reflect on what it means to approach healing with curiosity, flexibility, and a willingness to grow.
Although our guest shares her experience with Lyme disease, the lessons and questions explored in this conversation may resonate with anyone navigating a chronic condition or supporting a loved one through a challenging health journey.
In This Episode, We Explore:
👉Why treating a diagnosis and supporting the whole person can involve different considerations.
👉The relationship between physical health, emotional well-being, mindset, and the nervous system.
👉How resilience and adaptability can help us navigate unexpected health challenges.
👉The role of vulnerability in letting go of perfectionism and pride.
👉Why asking for help and being open to new perspectives can be important parts of personal growth.
👉How to approach your health journey with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to explore your next steps.A Reminder for Your Own Healing Journey
You don't have to have all the answers today. You don't have to navigate every challenge perfectly. And you don't have to assume that one approach will meet every need.
Instead, consider where you might benefit from additional support, what questions you could bring to your healthcare team, and how caring for your emotional and mental well-being might complement your medical care.
Because healing is personal, and progress doesn't always follow a straight line.
A note on health: This conversation shares personal experiences and educational perspectives, not individualized medical advice. Chronic Lyme disease and other chronic conditions require appropriate evaluation and treatment with qualified healthcare professionals. Mindset and emotional support can complement medical care but should not be considered substitutes for evidence-based treatment.

Perimenopause & Exercise: Why Your Old Routine May Not Be Working Anymore - Trainer Lindsey
Season 1, Episode 416
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
🤔Have you ever wondered why the diet and exercise routines that worked in your 20s and 30s don't seem to deliver the same results in your 40s?
You're still putting in the effort, but your body feels different. Maybe you're noticing changes in body composition, energy, strength, or recovery—and you're wondering whether it's time to change your approach.
In this episode, we're exploring the connection between perimenopause, nutrition, exercise, and recovery and why understanding your changing body can help you make more informed decisions about your health.
Because the goal isn't to punish yourself with harder workouts or more restrictive eating. It's to find a sustainable approach that supports your body through this season of life and beyond.
In this episode, we discuss:
• How perimenopause can influence the way your body responds to nutrition and exercise
• Why the routines that worked in your 20s and 30s may need to evolve in your 40s
• What women should understand about exercise and changing hormones
• Why strength training matters as women age
• How to balance cardiovascular exercise and resistance training
• What a realistic weekly workout routine can look like
• Why recovery deserves a place in your fitness plan
• How to approach nutrition and exercise without falling into the all-or-nothing trap
• How to make sustainable adjustments that support your long-term health and fitness goals
• The Bigger PicturePerimenopause can bring new questions about your body, but it doesn't mean your best years of strength, fitness, and vitality are behind you.
It may simply be time to reassess your approach.
Instead of asking, "How can I work harder?" consider asking:
"What does my body need from me in this season of life?"That might mean prioritizing strength training, finding a better balance between cardio and recovery, revisiting your nutrition, or making your routine more realistic for your current schedule and energy.
You don't need a perfect workout plan. You need a sustainable one that helps you build strength, support your health, and continue doing the things you love.
Because this is Direction Not Perfection: learning to work with your body, not against it, one step at a time.

Doing All the Things, But Still Not Feeling Better? You May Be in Health Debt - with Bria Gadd

💛🌟Be More in Your Life And NOT Just Less On a Scale🌟💛
From Health Debt to Health Wealth: 5 Steps to Thrive Through Perimenopause
Our guest walks us through five practical steps designed to help you stop simply reacting to health problems and start intentionally investing in your future health.
In this episode, we explore:
• What health debt actually means and how you may be carrying it without realizing it
• Why doing "all the things" doesn't necessarily mean you're doing the right things for your body
• How to calculate your health net worth by taking an honest inventory of your symptoms and areas of health that need attention
• Looking beyond weight to areas like gut health, perimenopause symptoms, joint pain, energy, sleep, stress, and more
• How to identify your health income vs. health expenses
• Where you're spending your energy—and what is actually giving energy back
• How to make the most of the 24 hours we all have each day
• What it means to aggressively start paying down your health debt
• How to move from simply managing your health to investing in your future healthThe 5-Step Framework:
1. Calculate Your Health Net Worth
Start by taking an honest inventory.
👉What symptoms are you experiencing?
👉What areas of your health feel good?
👉Where are you struggling?Think about gut health, energy, sleep, hormones, perimenopause symptoms, joint pain, strength, stress, mental health, nutrition, and anything else that impacts how you feel and function.
2. Look at Your Health Income & Expenses
👉Where are you spending your energy?
👉What drains you?
👉What gives you energy back? This can be a powerful exercise because sometimes we're spending enormous amounts of energy on things that aren't actually improving our health—or our lives.
3. Pay Down Your Health Debt
Once you know where the debt is, you can start addressing it.
The goal isn't to fix everything at once.
It's to identify the areas that are creating the biggest problems and start strategically working on those.4. Create Time for Your Health
We all have the same 24 hours.
The question isn't necessarily, "How do I find more time?"
It's:
"How can I use the time I have more intentionally?"What could you change, simplify, delegate, eliminate, or prioritize so you have some capacity to invest in your health?
5. Build Your Health Wealth
Once you've started paying down the debt, the goal isn't to stop.
Now you get to invest.🌟Strength training.
🌟Nourishing your body.
🌟Prioritizing sleep.
🌟Building relationships.
🌟Managing stress.Your Takeaway
If you want to try this exercise, grab a piece of paper and create four sections:
My Health Net Worth
What is working well?
My Health Debt
What symptoms, habits, or areas of health need attention?
My Health Expenses
Where am I spending my energy, time, and resources?
My Health Investments
What can I start doing today that will benefit my future self? You may be surprised by what you discover.

Understanding Insulin Resistance: What Could Be Driving Your Blood Sugar? -Dr. Jason Shumard
Season 1, Episode 414
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
👉If you've ever been told you have insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes and thought, "But WHY is this happening?", this conversation is for you.
It's easy to become focused on the numbers—blood glucose, A1C, insulin levels, weight—but understanding metabolic health involves looking at the bigger picture.
In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Jason Shumard, who has spent more than two decades helping people who feel frustrated or overwhelmed by traditional approaches to Type 2 diabetes.
Rather than simply focusing on managing numbers, Dr. Shumard emphasizes helping people better understand their metabolic health and identify factors that may be contributing to insulin resistance.
And I love this approach because understanding your health can be incredibly empowering.
When we understand the "why," we can start making more informed decisions about the "what."
🌟In this episode, we discuss:
• What insulin resistance actually means and what is happening inside the body
• Some of the common factors that can contribute to insulin resistance
• Why insulin resistance can be more complicated than simply "eating too much sugar"
• The role that nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and body composition can play in metabolic health
• Why two people with the same diagnosis may need very different approaches
• The importance of looking at the whole person rather than focusing on a single lab value
• Why understanding your metabolic health can change the way you approach your health
• How to move from feeling discouraged by your numbers to becoming more informed and engaged in your careOne of the things I really wanted to explore with Dr. Shumard is this:
What if knowing your numbers is only the beginning?
Your A1C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, cholesterol, triglycerides, and other markers can provide important information—but they're pieces of a much bigger picture.
Instead of looking at a lab result and thinking:
"What's wrong with me?"
We can start asking:
"What is this telling me about my health?"
That shift—from judgment to curiosity—is an important part of the Direction Not Perfection philosophy.
We don't need to understand everything overnight.
We don't need to overhaul our entire lives.
But we can become more informed, ask better questions, and start making small, sustainable changes that support our metabolic health.
A Question to Take With You
If you've been struggling with blood sugar, insulin resistance, prediabetes, or Type 2 diabetes, consider asking:
"Do I understand what may be contributing to my insulin resistance—or am I only managing the numbers?"
That question could be the beginning of a very different conversation with your healthcare team.
As always, this episode is for education and conversation—not individualized medical advice. Your diagnosis, medications, lab results, and treatment plan should be discussed with your own healthcare provider.

Aging in Place: How to Stay Safe, Strong & Independent at Home - with Fee Gentry
Season 1, Episode 413
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
When we talk about healthy aging, we usually talk about what we can do for our bodies: build strength, improve mobility, eat well, manage stress, and stay active.
But what about the environment around us?
Your home can either support your independence—or quietly make everyday life more difficult and potentially less safe.
👉In this episode, I’m joined by Fee Gentry, a former physical therapist, entrepreneur, and owner of Handled Home Solutions. With more than 35 years of entrepreneurial experience and a background that includes physical therapy, post-rehabilitation, real estate, and coding, Fee brings a unique perspective to the conversation about aging safely at home.
And this conversation goes far beyond grab bars and removing throw rugs.
📌We’re talking about how we can think ahead before a crisis happens and create homes—and lifestyles—that allow us to remain active, independent, and engaged in the things that matter most.
🌟In this episode, we talk about:
• Why healthy aging isn't just about nutrition, exercise, and strength—it’s also about our environment
• What it really means to age in place
• Why a fall can affect much more than physical health
• Common fall risks hiding in our homes that we may not even notice
• Why waiting until after a fall or hospitalization can make planning much harder
• How strength, mobility, balance, and confidence all work together
• The importance of being able to perform everyday movements like getting down on the floor and getting back up
• What women in their 40s and 50s can start thinking about now
• How to make proactive home changes without making your home feel like a nursing facility
• Simple changes that can improve safety and independence
• How adult children can have conversations about home safety with aging parents
• Why families often wait for a crisis before talking about caregiving and independence
• How we can prepare for the future without living in fear of it
The "Grandparent Test"🧠 One of my favorite ideas from this conversation is thinking beyond the scale, the mirror, or even the number on our birthday.
Ask yourself:
👉What do I want to be able to do at 70, 80, or 90?
👉Do you want to get down on the floor and play with your grandchildren?
👉Travel?
👉Walk through an airport without worrying about whether you'll be able to make it to the gate?
👉Get up from a chair without assistance?
👉Walk into your own home and feel confident moving around independently? These everyday abilities are easy to take for granted—until they're not.
That's why the work we do today matters. We're Not Preparing for a Smaller LifeI loved the bigger message that came out of this conversation:
Preparing for aging doesn't have to mean preparing for decline. We can think about strength, mobility, nutrition, balance, and home safety as ways to create more freedom, not fewer choices. Because the goal isn't simply to live longer.
It's to have the capacity to participate in the life you've worked so hard to build.More travel.
More family time.
More adventures.
More independence.
More "yes" moments.
And maybe that's what healthy aging is really about.
A question to think about:
What is one thing you can do today to make your future life a little easier, safer, or more independent?📌Connect with Fee Gentry:

Your Nervous System & Food: A Somatic Approach to Breaking the Diet Cycle- with Stephanie Mara
Season 1, Episode 412
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
What if going back to another diet isn’t a failure of willpower—and it isn’t self-sabotage?
What if your nervous system is playing a much bigger role in your relationship with food, your body, and your desire to start over?
In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey sits down with a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor who is pioneering the intersection of somatics, nervous system science, trauma work, and nutrition.
Her work brings together pieces that are often addressed separately. You may understand nutrition but never explore what is happening in your nervous system—or you may work on trauma and somatic awareness without addressing the nutrition behaviors that are keeping you stuck.
Together, we explore what happens when we look at the whole picture.
👉In this episode, we talk about:
• The connection between the nervous system, food, and body healing
• What your food behaviors may actually be trying to communicate
• Why returning to another diet may not be a matter of self-sabotage
• Why we continue reaching for diets even when we intellectually know they don’t work
• The connection between dieting and trauma
• How the nervous system can pull us toward familiar behaviors and patterns
• Why knowing what to do isn’t always enough to change a behavior
• How stress, safety, emotions, and past experiences can influence our relationship with food
• What it means to work with your body instead of against it
• How to approach the cycle of constantly “starting over” with more curiosity and compassion
• Moving beyond restriction, control, and willpower toward a more sustainable relationship with food and your body🤔If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know what to do. Why can’t I just do it?” this conversation may give you a completely different lens.
Instead of immediately asking, “What am I doing wrong?”, we can begin asking:
“What is my body trying to tell me?”
That shift—from judgment to curiosity—can open the door to understanding the patterns underneath our food behaviors and creating change that feels more sustainable.
👉Because sometimes the answer isn’t another diet.
💛Sometimes the next step is learning how to listen to your body.

Vanity vs. Vitality: What’s Really Driving Your Health Choices?
Season 1, Episode 411
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
🤔Vanity vs. Vitality: What’s Really Driving Your Health Choices?
What if the reason you resist certain healthy habits has less to do with discipline—and more to do with the story you've attached to them?
Sometimes the behaviors we associate with health and fitness can carry a lot of emotional baggage. Maybe you grew up watching someone obsess over their weight and exercise, and you promised yourself you would never become that person. Maybe you've watched a spouse become consumed by workouts, macros, supplements, or their fitness tracker and decided that lifestyle isn't for you.
So what happens when something that could actually support your health starts to feel like vanity, obsession, selfishness, or sacrifice?
In this episode, we're unpacking the idea of Vanity vs. Vitality and exploring how our past experiences and subconscious stories may influence the health choices we make today.
Because taking care of yourself doesn't have to be about looking a certain way.
It can be about having the energy, strength, mobility, health, and confidence to fully participate in your life.
👉In this episode, we explore:
• How the stories we grew up with can influence our relationship with exercise and healthy behaviors
• Why some women may unconsciously resist exercise because they don't want to become someone they associate with fitness obsession
• The difference between exercising for vanity and moving your body for vitality
• How our partners, parents, and past experiences can shape our beliefs about health and fitness
• Why healthy living doesn't have to mean spending hours in the gym or following a rigid diet
• The "helping vs. hindering" exercise for evaluating whether a health behavior actually fits your life
• Why the best workout isn't necessarily the hardest workout—it's the one that supports your life and priorities
• How walking, strength training, social movement, and everyday activity can all contribute to a healthy lifestyle
• Why the same healthy behavior can be beneficial for one person but feel like a sacrifice for another
• How to shift the conversation from "How will this make me look?" to "How will this help me live?"
• Applying the vanity vs. vitality framework to nutrition, sleep, stress management, boundaries, therapy, and other areas of health📌A question to journal about:
Think of one healthy behavior you've been resisting.
Then ask yourself:
What story have I attached to this behavior?
Where did that story come from?
And finally:
Is this behavior helping me or hindering me?
What would change if you stopped viewing it through the lens of vanity and started viewing it through the lens of vitality?
Because maybe taking care of your health isn't about becoming smaller, looking younger, or finally achieving the "perfect" body.
Maybe it's about having the strength to travel.
The energy to keep up with your kids.

Listen to Dr. Laurie Bruce's podcast"From Both Sides of the Couch"
🤔⁉️ What happens when you become so good at taking care of everyone else that you lose touch with yourself? For many women—especially in midlife—it can be surprisingly difficult to answer a simple question: “What do I need?”
You may be the person everyone counts on. The caregiver. The problem-solver. The mom, partner, professional, friend, or daughter who always seems to know what everyone else needs. And while there is nothing wrong with caring deeply for the people in your life, it can become easy to put your own needs, desires, and identity somewhere at the bottom of the list.
Eventually, you may find yourself wondering: When did I stop checking in with myself? What do I actually want? And how do I learn to trust myself again?
In this episode, we explore what it means to reconnect with yourself—not by completely changing your life, but by becoming more aware and intentional within the life you already have.
Dr. Laurie Bruce and I talk about why women can lose touch with themselves, the impact of caregiving and being “the one everyone depends on,” and how mindfulness can help us slow down enough to actually notice what we need.
🌟In this episode, we explore:
• Why women can lose touch with themselves as their roles and responsibilities evolve
• How being the person everyone depends on can affect your own identity
• The difference between knowing what you need and simply doing what everyone else needs from you
• How to begin reconnecting with yourself in midlife
• What it means to know, love, and trust yourself again
• Why self-trust can become difficult—and how we begin rebuilding it
• How mindfulness can be much more than meditation or stress reduction
• Using mindfulness to become more present in the middle of a very full life
• Why you may not need a different life—you may simply need a different relationship with the life you're already living
• How to stop waiting for the next milestone, season, or accomplishment to finally feel happy
• Small ways to begin listening to yourself again👉🧠A question to take with you:

Aging After 40: What Your Skin, Metabolism & Stress Are Trying to Tell You
Season 1, Episode 409
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
Have you ever felt like your body suddenly changed after 40?
Your skin looks different. Your metabolism doesn't seem to respond the way it used to. Stress hits harder. Recovery takes longer. And the strategies that worked in your 20s and 30s don't always work anymore.
In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey sits down with Jonathan Carp, MD, a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician, to explore what may be happening beneath the surface.
Dr. Carp takes a practical, sustainable approach to health and focuses on the connection between skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, aging, and lifestyle. His perspective challenges us to look beyond quick fixes and become more informed participants in our own health.
Together, Lindsey and Dr. Carp explore why aging can feel so different after 40—and what our skin may be able to teach us about the aging process as a whole.
👉In This Episode, We Discuss:
• Why women may feel like their metabolism and skin change almost overnight after 40
• What aging skin can teach us about the broader aging process
• The connection between skin health and overall health
• How nutrition and lifestyle patterns influence how we age, feel, and function
• The relationship between stress, nervous system overload, and the skin
• How chronic stress can show up physically in the body
• Why sustainable lifestyle changes matter more than rigid diet and wellness rules
• How to become more of an authority in your own health
• Why understanding your body can be more powerful than constantly searching for the next quick fix
• What dermatology and lifestyle medicine can teach us about healthy aging after 40📌Meet Jonathan Carp, MD:
Jonathan Carp, MD, is a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician focused on the intersection of skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, and sustainable wellness. He is also the founder of Miracle Noodle and Miracle Living.
Through his clinical work and educational platform, Dr. Carp helps people understand how lifestyle patterns can influence not only how they look, but how they age, feel, and function over time.
The Takeaway
Your skin may be giving you clues—but the bigger conversation is about your whole body.
Aging well isn't about finding the perfect routine or fighting every sign of getting older. It's about understanding how your nutrition, movement, stress, recovery, and daily habits influence your health over time—and using that information to make sustainable choices.
You don't need to be perfect. You need to understand your body, take ownership of your health, and keep moving in the right direction.

Healthy Aging: Why Taking Care of Yourself Is a Gift to Those You Love!
Season 1, Episode 408
Show notes
Send a text for comments or topics ideas!
"You matter. Your health matters. Not just for you, but for everyone who loves you."
And I think we need to talk about that.
Because we often think about our health as a personal responsibility. I want to lose weight. I want more energy. I want to feel better in my body. I want to get stronger. I want to live longer.
And yes—all of those things matter.
But there is another side to the conversation.
When you invest in your physical, mental, and emotional health, you're also investing in the people who love you. You're giving yourself a better chance of staying independent. You're increasing your capacity to participate in the life you want to live. You're potentially reducing the amount of care others may have to provide for you down the road.
And perhaps most importantly, you're giving the people who love you the gift of having more life with you.
That doesn't mean we can prevent every illness. We can't control every diagnosis, every injury, or every circumstance that life puts in front of us. Her father's story is a perfect reminder of that.
But there is a lot we can influence.
We can stop ignoring the pain that keeps showing up.
We can stop telling ourselves that we're too old to get stronger.
We can stop waiting until our health becomes an emergency before we decide it matters.
We can challenge the myths and the all-or-nothing thinking that keep us from taking care of ourselves today.
💛Your Health Is Not Selfish
I want to take that idea a little further, because I think there's something we need to give ourselves permission to believe:
💛Taking care of your health is not selfish.
And yet, how many of us feel guilty about it?
We feel guilty taking an hour to exercise. We feel guilty spending money on our health. We feel guilty going to an appointment, taking a nap, preparing a healthy meal, or simply setting a boundary because we need some time for ourselves.
But what if we looked at that differently?
What if taking care of yourself isn't taking something away from your family? What if it's actually an investment in the years you get to share with them?
We've all seen the difference.
Think about the parent who can still get on the roller coaster with their kids. The grandparent who can get down on the floor and build Legos, play dolls, wrestle with the grandkids—and, just as importantly, get back up.
Those aren't really fitness goals.
They're life goals.
If you are enjoying this topic, I can't wait for you to tune in!

Move Better, Hurt Less: An Athletic Trainer's Guide to Lifelong Health - with Erin Beckwith
Season 1, Episode 407
Show notes

👉 Does this sound like you? "I've become incredibly good at finding workarounds... and eventually, I'm worried that those compensations will become my new normal."
Being active is key to living a healthy lifestyle. In order to stay active, we need to take care of our bodies. We all occasionally suffer injuries ranging from minor inconveniences all the way to severe, life changing incidents.
Today I interviewed Athletic Trainer, Erin Lewis. Erin’s education and training enable her to focus on rehabilitating patients who are recovering from injury. She is able to adapt and modify exercises to best meet the needs of each individual.
Erin works with students, everyday individuals and chronically ill patients (such as those with Fibromyalgia and MS, to give them a better quality of life). Everyone is different in the way a disease affects them so she tailors her training to help them where they are at. Her philosophy is to take it day by day and don’t be afraid to “start low and slow” and build up to what they can tolerate.
Weekend warriors and generally active people often downplay injuries. They ignore small hurts or develop ways to work around them hoping they will go away on their own. They will end up compensating later in life.
If it has been several weeks since an injury, you should feel healed. If you don’t, you need to consult a professional like Erin, address the injury and take proper action toward a full recovery, not just a workaround that will one day come back to haunt you. Injuries do not just disappear. They may hide for a while, but they will resurface, possibly affecting a completely different area that has been compromised by your compensation.
There are steps you could be taking to decrease pain or increase limited movement. If you don't know where to start, a primary physician can be a great jump off point for referrals. You need to take time to listen to your body. Just breathe. If you can do that you are living, and you can build from there.

🤔What if getting older didn't have to mean getting weaker?
What if you could actually be stronger, more flexible, and more resilient at 70 than you were at 30?
That's the question our guest today has spent decades exploring—and proving that vitality isn't reserved for the young. In fact, he believes that with the right approach, we can build strength, mobility, resilience, and a deeper sense of well-being at virtually any stage of life.
As a co-creator of The Happy Body Program, he teaches an approach built around micro-progression, mindful training, and emotional intelligence—because creating a healthier, stronger body isn't just about what happens during your workout. It's also about the small choices you make every day and the way you learn to work with yourself rather than against yourself.
We're talking about what it really means to age well, why small consistent progress can create remarkable results over time, and how physical strength and emotional resilience are deeply connected.
👉Because maybe aging isn't about losing your vitality.
Maybe it's about learning how to build a body, mindset, and life that become stronger with every decade.

Do you ever find yourself eating when you're not physically hungry?
If so, you're not alone—and you're certainly not lacking willpower.
In this episode of Direction Not Perfection, Lindsey sits down with clinical psychologist, mindfulness coach, and host of From Both Sides of the Couch, Dr. Laurie Bruce, to explore what emotional eating really is—and why understanding it is one of the most important steps toward lasting health.
For many women, emotional eating isn't simply about food. It's a learned coping strategy that develops over years of managing stress, overwhelm, loneliness, anxiety, perfectionism, and the constant pressure to care for everyone else before themselves.
Rather than focusing on guilt or restriction, Dr. Bruce shares how mindfulness, nervous system regulation, self-compassion, and rebuilding self-trust can help us create a healthier relationship with food—and with ourselves.
If you've ever wondered why you know what to do but struggle to follow through, this conversation will leave you feeling understood, hopeful, and equipped with practical ways to begin healing from the inside out.
👉In This Episode You'll Learn:
• What emotional eating really is (and what it isn't)
• Why emotional eating has very little to do with willpower
• How stress and your nervous system influence eating behaviors
• Why so many women disconnect from themselves in midlife
• The role mindfulness plays in changing eating patterns
• How self-compassion creates more lasting change than self-criticism
• Practical ways to reconnect with your body and build self-trust
• Why understanding yourself is the first step toward sustainable health👉Remember: Emotional eating isn't a sign that you've failed. It's often a signal that something deeper needs your attention. Healing begins when we replace judgment with curiosity and create space to understand what our emotions are trying to tell us.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have to admit, whenever I used to hear the word hypnosis, I immediately put up walls. It felt a little "out there," maybe not very scientific, and honestly, I was skeptical. But over time, my understanding of this tool has evolved, and I've come to believe that hypnosis may be one of the most underutilized resources in health and healing. So before you skip this episode —this conversation is rooted in science, psychology, and the incredible power of the unconscious mind.
Today's guest helps individuals use hypnosis to create lasting change in areas like weight loss, relationships, confidence, sleep, pain relief, and emotional healing. We discuss how many of our patterns and beliefs operate beneath conscious awareness and how accessing the unconscious mind can help people break free from old stories and create healthier lives.
We also explore some fascinating topics, including past life regression, the connection between unresolved experiences and present-day struggles, and the idea that sometimes healing requires us to uncover what our conscious mind may have forgotten.
As our guest says, "Your soul remembers what your mind forgot."
Whether you're curious, skeptical, or already familiar with hypnosis, I think you'll find this conversation both thought-provoking and surprisingly practical. Stay tuned.

🤔 Have you ever wondered why maintaining healthy habits feels easy in some areas of life and nearly impossible in others?
In today's episode, we dive into the connection between ADHD, neurodivergence, and the struggle to maintain routines around food, movement, sleep, and self-care. Joining us is a therapist who specializes in ADHD and helping neurodivergent individuals better understand how their brains work so they can create sustainable habits that actually fit their lives.
Together, we discuss why hyperfocus can make some areas thrive while other important routines fall by the wayside, how perfectionism often accompanies neurodivergence, and why traditional "just try harder" advice often misses the mark.
You'll learn practical strategies to support consistency, reduce overwhelm, and work with your brain instead of constantly fighting against it.
🌟In This Episode, We Discuss:
-Why ADHD and neurodivergence can make consistency challenging
-The relationship between hyperfocus and neglected routines
-Common struggles with food, movement, sleep, and self-care
-Why perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking are so common
-Simple environmental strategies, including keeping important items visible
-How to create sustainable habits without relying on willpower
-Learning to work with your brain instead of against itIf you've ever felt frustrated by your inability to "stay consistent," this episode offers both understanding and practical tools to help.
