Aging, Identity and the Freedom to Change | Dana Larocca
Episode 326
Show notes
Dana Larocca spent decades asking whether biology could be changed, while keeping a fundamental truth about herself hidden. Growing up as a boy, she longed for a girl’s body. In the laboratory, she explored how cells could be reprogrammed. In her own life, she faced the question of when she could finally live openly as the woman she knew herself to be.
A molecular biologist and biogerontologist, Dana’s work includes a study in which researchers reprogrammed cells from a woman who lived to 114. That research could help scientists understand exceptional longevity and develop treatments for age-related disease.
Dana transitioned later in life, after years of building a scientific career and raising a family. In her book, Reprogramming Life: Beyond the Limits of Aging, Gender, and Identity, she brings those personal and professional experiences together.
In this conversation with Peter Bowes, she explores cellular reprogramming, biological freedom and the possibilities and limits of longevity science. She also reflects on what makes a longer life worthwhile: living authentically, enjoying simple pleasures and having more time with the people we love.

Why We Push People Away | Dr. Laura Dabney
Episode 325
Show notes
Why do we sometimes push away the people we most want to be close to?
Psychiatrist Dr. Laura Dabney joins Peter Bowes to discuss her book, I Need You…Now Go Away! Reclaiming Your Life When You or Someone You Love Has a Personality Disorder.
They explore the feelings that can be difficult to acknowledge—anger, sadness and needing another person—and how those feelings can shape recurring conflict. Laura also discusses parents adjusting to adult children’s independence, the stigma surrounding personality disorders and her experience working with people who are successful professionally but struggle in close relationships.
It is a conversation about connection, emotional wellbeing and the quality of the lives we share.
Laura's book: I Need You…Now Go Away!
---
This episode explores Dr. Laura Dabney’s perspectives on relationships and mental health. It is for general information and does not provide individual medical advice, a diagnosis or a substitute for professional care. Relationship difficulties alone do not establish a personality disorder; diagnosis requires assessment by a qualified mental health professional.
The communication suggestions discussed may not be appropriate where there is abuse, coercion or fear of retaliation. In those circumstances, prioritize your safety and seek confidential support from a domestic abuse service or qualified professional.
If this conversation raises concerns about your relationships or mental health, consider speaking with your doctor or a qualified mental health professional.

Are We Rushing Life? | Alex Snider
Episode 324
Show notes
Alex Snider thinks our constant rushing, and our obsession with being on time, may be costing us more than we realize.
For Live Long, this goes to the heart of a bigger question: if longevity is about living well, not simply living longer, are we actually giving enough attention to the life happening now?
Alex, author of Sometimes You Should Be Late, spent more than 15 years in high-pressure government roles before a cycling accident forced him to rethink urgency, productivity and what it means to be fully present.
I was skeptical. In this interview we challenge each other on punctuality, hard deadlines, wasted time, ambition and whether slowing down really helps us live better.
We also discuss the classic Good Samaritan experiment, the physical cost of constant rushing, Alex’s idea of “emotional punctuality,” and my own habit of leaving “white space” in the day.
This is a conversation about choice: how we use our time, how we show up for other people, and whether living longer also means learning to live more fully now.

More Capable in Midlife | Peter Clerkin
Episode 323
Show notes
What does it mean to be physically capable as we grow older?
For Pilates coach and educator Peter Clerkin, it means developing the strength, cardiovascular fitness, balance, mobility and confidence to participate fully in life.
A serious football injury at 15, followed by a long recovery and learning to walk again, changed Peter’s relationship with movement. He later completed marathons and triathlons and built a career helping other people improve their physical capabilities.
In this conversation, Peter explains why Pilates is only one part of a well-rounded physical life. He also discusses exercise after 40, the value of enjoyment and social connection, his decision to stop drinking alcohol and why our ambitions should not diminish as we grow older.
--
Bio: Peter Clerkin is an Irish Pilates teacher, coach and educator based in London. After graduating in Sport and Exercise Science, he coached soccer in Seattle before moving to London in 2013. Since then, he has completed more than 20,000 hours of teaching and coaching. Peter sees Pilates not as the complete answer, but as one part of a varied and active life. His approach to healthspan begins with what people want to keep doing, from travelling and playing sport to feeling confident trying something new. He is now developing Future Pilates.

Are Your Organs Aging at Different Speeds? | Paul Coletta
Episode 322
Show notes
Could your heart, brain and kidneys all be aging at different rates?
In this episode of Live Long, Peter Bowes talks with Paul Coletta, co-founder and CEO of Vero Bioscience, about the emerging science of organ-specific biological aging. Researchers at Stanford have been studying whether proteins in the blood can help estimate how quickly individual organs are aging and whether that information could reveal future health risks before disease develops.
Paul explains how proteomics, machine learning and organ-age clocks work, and why an unexpected result from his own kidney-age test helped draw him into the field. The conversation also explores the limits of biological-age testing, the risk of over-testing and health anxiety, and whether knowing your “weakest link” can genuinely help guide lifestyle changes or preventive care.
We also discuss healthspan, sleep, sunlight, self-experimentation, emerging longevity interventions and the difference between extending life and extending the number of healthy years we live.
Context for this episode
The personal health practices, supplement choices and off-label therapeutic protocols discussed by Paul Coletta in this episode represent his own monitored “N-of-1” experiments. They are shared strictly for informational and educational purposes and do not constitute medical advice or endorsement.
Individual responses to supplements, medications and lifestyle interventions can vary, and what is appropriate for one person may not be suitable for another. Some interventions may also carry risks, interact with medications, or require medical monitoring.
Always consult your primary care physician or another qualified healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet or health practices, or before starting new supplements or medications.

How to Outpoint Father Time | Gunnar Peterson
Episode 321
Show notes
For more than three decades, Gunnar Peterson has trained elite athletes and some of Hollywood’s best-known performers. But his approach to fitness is rooted in a principle that applies far beyond professional sport: exercise works best when it becomes part of everyday life. He argues that recovery deserves the same attention as strength, cardiovascular fitness and nutrition, particularly as we grow older. In this conversation, he discusses functional training, red light therapy and what high achievers have taught him about consistency. He also explains why longevity, for him, is less about perfection than staying strong, connected and fully engaged with life.
Gunnar Peterson is head of performance and a partner at Solbasium, helping shape recovery technology from a coach’s perspective.

Why Sleep Matters More Than Biohacking | Drew Griesel
Episode 319
Show notes
Most of us assume that losing energy, struggling to sleep and taking longer to recover are simply inevitable parts of getting older.
But what if they're not?
Executive performance coach Drew Griesel believes many people are paying what he calls The Hidden Performance Tax - a slow, almost invisible decline in energy, focus and resilience that develops over years and eventually feels "normal."
In this interview with Peter Bowes he explains why improving healthspan should come before pursuing longevity, why sleep quality may be the single most important driver of performance, and why the fundamentals - movement, nutrition, hydration and recovery - still matter more than the latest biohacks.

Hidden Drivers Of Longevity | Oscar Trelles
Episode 317
Show notes
Modern life asks less and less of our bodies, while placing ever greater demands on our minds. We move less, sleep poorly and fill every spare moment with stimulation—often without realizing the long-term consequences.
Oscar Trelles explores the connections between recovery, resilience and the way we age. His work—through the wellness and performance company Breathing Flame—focuses on helping people better understand the conditions that shape health and long-term wellbeing.
In his forthcoming book, The Human OS Manual, he argues that a longer, healthier life depends less on isolated interventions and more on the rhythms and routines that shape our days.
So have we lost touch with the conditions that help us thrive—and what would it take to restore them?

It's Never Too Late | Jeffrey Weiss
Episode 315
Show notes
What is still possible in midlife?
Many of us reach our forties, fifties and sixties assuming that the major chapters of our lives have already been written. Careers are established, habits are set, and the opportunity for significant change may feel increasingly limited.
Jeffrey Weiss challenges that assumption.
At the age of 48, he ran his first 10-kilometre race. In the years that followed, he completed Ironman Arizona twice, finished a 72-mile ultramarathon, and embarked on a successful new chapter in his professional life that culminated in a multi-billion-dollar startup exit.
In this conversation, we explore the power of healthspan, the value of audacious goals, how fitness can transform both body and mindset, and why it's never too late to embrace a new challenge.
Jeffrey is the author of Racing Against Time: On Ironman, Ultramarathons, and the Quest for Transformation in Mid-Life.

Can Science Slow Aging? | David Donnelly
Episode 313
Show notes
For decades, aging was seen as inevitable — a slow and irreversible decline. But a growing number of scientists now believe we may be entering a turning point, with research increasingly focused on extending not just how long we live, but how well we live.
In the documentary Forever Young, filmmaker David Donnelly — alongside producers Dr. James Johnson and Dr. Thomas Lewis — explores the rapidly evolving world of longevity science, from biological clocks and AI-driven research to the power of lifestyle, purpose, and social connection.
The film also confronts some of the field’s biggest questions: what aging actually is, whether it should be treated as a disease, and who stands to benefit if the science succeeds. In this conversation with Peter Bowes, Donnelly reflects on skepticism, scientific disagreement, and why he believes humanity may already be living through a longevity revolution.

Why Loneliness Shortens Lives | Dr Alan Rozanski
Episode 312
Show notes
Loneliness is increasingly being recognized not simply as a social issue, but as a major threat to public health.
Cardiologist and behavioral medicine pioneer Dr. Alan Rozanski says the evidence is now clear: meaningful human connection influences everything from heart health to longevity and emotional resilience.
In this conversation with Peter Bowes, he explains how social isolation affects the body biologically, why purpose and vitality matter as much as diet and exercise, and why modern life may be weakening our ability to connect.
He also explores the difference between being alone and feeling lonely, and the complex role technology and social media now play in our relationships. Ultimately, he argues that the strongest predictor of long-term wellbeing may not simply be how long we live — but how vital and connected we feel along the way.

The Truth About Retirement | Gregg Lunceford
Episode 311
Show notes
As people live longer and stay healthier for more years, retirement is being redefined. What was once seen as a relatively short closing chapter can now stretch across decades, raising deeper questions about identity, purpose and how to spend our time well. Wealth adviser Gregg Lunceford has spent years studying this transition and the gap between leaving work and living well afterwards. He argues that traditional ideas of retirement, focused mainly on financial security, miss the psychological and social role that work plays in our lives. The challenge now is not simply knowing when to stop working, but how to shape a fulfilling life beyond it.
Gregg Lunceford is a wealth advisor and researcher focused on how people navigate the transition into retirement. A Managing Director at Mesirow, he works with individuals over 50 to plan not just financially, but psychologically and socially for life beyond full-time work. Author of Exit from Work, he examines what he calls the “third age”: a potentially rich, 20-year phase shaped by reinvention, meaning, and a rethinking of what it means to live well.

Beyond willpower: The biology of hunger | Sarah Kennedy
Episode 310
Show notes
Weight-loss drugs that target the hormone GLP-1 have rapidly reshaped the conversation around obesity, appetite and personal responsibility. But alongside the rise of powerful synthetic injectables, researchers are also exploring whether the body’s own appetite signals can be harnessed more naturally. At the heart of the debate is a simple question: are we eating too much because of weak willpower, or because of biology?
As new approaches emerge, the challenge is to balance effectiveness, safety and long-term sustainability in tackling one of modern health’s most persistent problems.
In this interview, Sarah Kennedy, founder of Calocurb, a New Zealand company which has developed a plant-based compound designed to naturally stimulate GLP-1, discusses the science of appetite control and how it compares to injectable drugs.

Tracking Biological Age with AI and Blood Biomarkers | Tyler Smith
Episode 308
Show notes
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how we understand our health — not just how we feel today, but how fast we’re actually aging.
On this episode of Live Long, host Peter Bowes continues his personal experiment with Hundred, the AI-powered longevity platform that combines advanced blood testing, wearable data and personalized insights to track biological age and guide smarter health decisions.
After introducing the app in an earlier conversation, Peter reconnects with Hundred’s founder, Tyler Smith, to go deeper into the idea of a “health operating system” — essentially a personal doctor in your pocket. Together they explore how continuous testing and AI analysis could help prevent disease, spot risks earlier, and motivate lasting behavior change — while also addressing the realities of over-testing, false alarms, privacy concerns and health anxiety.
Peter also shares the results of his own first round of testing, what surprised him most, and how he’s using the data to shape his approach to longevity and healthy aging.

Quit Alcohol, Gain Clarity This New Year | James Swanwick
Episode 307
Show notes
Was it a boozy start to the New Year? What if you could gain more clarity, energy, and better health by giving up drinking? Imagine a day when alcohol no longer dominates our thoughts—at holidays, celebrations, or even a quiet night in front of the TV.
Alcohol-free expert James Swanwick says a cultural shift is underway, with alcohol slowly losing its grip on our social and professional lives. Even moderate drinking can quietly sap sleep, focus, and long-term wellbeing—especially for high achievers.
In this conversation, Swanwick explains the neuroscience of addiction, why going alcohol-free is gaining momentum, and how the stigma around teetotalism is fading. He predicts that within decades, alcohol could be viewed with the same disdain as cigarettes.

Pilates For Strength, Balance, and Mobility | Shebah Carfagna & Nate Wilkins
Episode 306
Show notes
Pilates is more than graceful movement — it’s a strength-focused, precision-based system that builds core stability, balance, and posture for people of all ages. In the final episode of our Move for Life series Peter Bowes explores how Pilates is can help us with lifelong mobility. Originally developed as rehabilitation for dancers, Pilates uses controlled, low-repetition movements on mats and spring-based apparatus to target stabilising muscles often neglected in traditional exercise.
Ageless Workout’s Nate Wilkins and Shebah Carfagna explain how it differs from yoga and weight training and how Pilates can be used as a valuable took to nurture our longevity.
