Overlooked: Women's Health Can't Wait

Health & Fitness, Medicine, Personal Journals, Society & Culture

Immersive personal stories and conversations about women's health.

Overlooked is an award-winning women’s health podcast, hosted by journalist Golda Arthur.

In this podcast, we ask, what has been most overlooked, and where is the inequality felt more deeply?

The mission of Overlooked is to empower women by helping them advocate better for themselves, and we do this by featuring immersive personal storytelling, and in-depth conversations about women’s health.

Overlooked began as a series about ovarian cancer, told through the story of Golda's mother, Teresa. After that first season, the show broadened its focus to look at other topics and stories about women's health, including menopause, endometriosis, motherhood, and survivorship.

  1. What Brittany Chaffee wishes she’d known about abnormal pap smears and HPV

    Episode 69

    Show notes

Brittany Chaffee was in her mid-twenties when she was told her pap smear was abnormal, and she needed to come back for a biopsy. She found a stairwell at work and cried her heart out, filled with anxiety. What followed was nearly a decade of abnormal pap smear results, painful procedures, and almost $8,000 in bills. She learned the hard way about HPV, and procedures like a colposcopy and a LEEP, and pushes back against the shame and fear associated with women's health conditions.

  2. How to talk about pain in the ER, with Dr Jeremy Faust

    Episode 68

    Show notes

A sudden, blinding headache brought Golda to the emergency room in December of 2025, and that visit became the inspiration for this episode. Golda uses that ER visit as a case study to understand how we as patients can better communicate with our healthcare providers, and vice versa. The guest on this episode is Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and editor-in-chief of MedPage Today. Dr Faust explains what ER staff are listening for, why the pain scale matters less than you think, and which details of your condition do matter instead.

This episode is part of our series exploring the doctor-patient relationship: ‘How to talk so your doctor listens’. Maybe our next episode will come from you - write to us with your story, or reflections on your relationship with your doctor: email or send us a voice memo hello@overlookedpod.com.

  3. How to talk so your doctor listens, with endocrinologist Dr Gillian Goddard

    Episode 67

    Show notes

Your doctor is supposed to listen to you regardless of what you say - but most women have a story about a doctor’s visit that left them feeling dismissed and invisible. This episode kicks off a new series of conversations exploring the doctor-patient relationship, and how we as patients can improve it, and get the care and attention we deserve. Endocrinologist Dr. Gillian Goddard, author of The Hormone Loop: An Empowering Guide to Restoring Hormonal Harmony, from Puberty to Menopause, breaks down why patients and doctors often speak past each other, even when both want the same thing. She shares how to set a realistic goal before your appointment, how to push back, and what to do with everything you learned from Dr. Google at 3am.

  5. Cancer survivorship and its shadow, with Dr Mercedes Castiel

    Episode 65

    Show notes

There are many positive developments in cancer treatments right now, and the overall survival rate for cancer across the board is ticking upwards. But there’s a shadow here. Survivorship is overlooked, and it comes with its own weight, creating a range of challenges: difficulties that are emotional or physical, sexual or financial. In this episode, Golda talks to Dr Mercedes Castiel about the shadow of cancer survivroship, what 'quality of life' means after cancer treatment, and the kinds of resources survivors and caregivers need.

This episode was recorded with a live audience at the Canadian Conference on Ovarian Cancer, organized by Ovarian Cancer Canada, and hosted by the Gynecologic Cancer Initiative at the University of British Columbia. It also features the experiences of three ovarian cancer survivors: Jackie Cherwenuk, Jenny Graham, and Leslie Fletcher.

    Episode 63

    Show notes

'First Person Health' is a storytelling workshop, and this episode features two moving pieces from women who took the class:

Leah Wittenberg tells a visceral story about a stomach infection caused by H. pylori that caused complications and sepsis, an abdominal perforation and emergency surgery.

First Person Health teaches women how to tell their story powerfully in sound. This is small-batch storytelling, so that each participant gets attention and support as they process their health experience. Episode 58

    Show notes

Jasna Hodžić is a writer, researcher - and avid rock climber, and she's built a life around the sport she loves. When she was in her mid-twenties, her gynecologist ran a hormone panel and sent her for a bone density scan, and what came back was the last thing she expected. Jasna had the bone density of someone decades older. She was, as she puts it, 'crumbling from within' - and she had no idea. The condition is called Female Athlete Triad, now also known as RED-S: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. Jasna tells Golda her story, and what she wants other female athletes to know.

  15. The woman who helped make tampons safer, with Nancy King Reame

    Episode 55

    Show notes

Nancy King Reame, Professor Emerita at Columbia University's School of Nursing, has spent decades researching tampon safety. She was on the FDA task force that investigated the link between tampons and toxic shock syndrome in the early eighties - a deadly outbreak that killed dozens of women and affected hundreds more. Her research led to the absorbency scale printed on every box of tampons sold. Nancy King Reame says even today, we still don't fully know what goes into a tampon.

Nancy Reame is the Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Health Promotion, Risk Reduction (Emerita), at the Columbia University School of Nursing. This episode covers:

-The history of toxic shock syndrome and its link to tampon absorbency in the 1980s

-How tampons are still tested using a synthetic vagina and blue-dyed salt water — not menstrual fluid

-Why we don't know the specifics of what goes into a tampon

  16. Cesarean births: the surgery that changes everything, with Helena Grant and Rachel Somerstein

    Episode 54

    Show notes

Cesarean births are one of the most common operations in the world, and yet, we know surprisingly little about the impact and legacy of this surgery in our bodies.

Host Golda Arthur had two emergency cesarean births, and 20 years later, she's still making sense of their legacy. In this episode, she sits down with Rachel Somerstein, author of Invisible Labor: The Untold Story of the Cesarean Section, and Helena Grant, president of New York Midwives, to talk about why cesarean births are overlooked.

    They discuss:

    - The origin of this surgery, which in the United States was first practiced on enslaved women.

    - Why the rate of c-sections is so high in the US.

    - Why recovery takes far longer than anyone tells you.

    - What to know if you’re pregnant, or trying to have a baby, and want to know more about cesarean births.
