Sleep Apnea: Why CPAP Isn't Fixing the Real Problem (This Does!)
Show notes
What if you're sleeping eight hours a night but your body is struggling to breathe the entire time? Sleep apnea can disrupt your breathing dozens of times an hour without you ever realizing it, putting your heart, brain, and metabolic health at risk. In this episode, I break down the warning signs most people miss, why sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed, and what you can do to address it.
Here's what I discuss in today's episode:
• Why you can sleep eight hours and still wake up exhausted
• The surprising signs of sleep apnea that have nothing to do with snoring
• How disrupted breathing at night can affect your heart, brain, and metabolic health
• Why even thin, healthy, and physically fit people can develop sleep apnea
• Whether CPAP is your only option and what else may help improve your breathing at night
• How to know if you should get tested for sleep apneaSleep apnea isn't just about snoring or feeling tired. Left untreated, it can have serious consequences for your long-term health. The good news is that there are effective treatments, and understanding what's driving your sleep apnea can help you address the problem from multiple angles. If you're constantly waking up tired, don't ignore it. Your body may be trying to tell you something.

Why Midlife Could Be Your Most Powerful Chapter Yet | Mel Robbins
Show notes
Most of us have been there. I know I have. You want to make a change, but somehow it keeps getting pushed to tomorrow. Why does getting started so often feel like the hardest part?
Today, I’m joined by Mel Robbins, bestselling author of The Let Them Theory and host of The Mel Robbins Podcast. We talk about what helps us follow through, how our surroundings shape our habits, and how to support the people we love without trying to control their choices.
Here’s what we get into:
•
How to catch yourself before you talk yourself out of taking action
•
Why healthy choices don’t have to depend on feeling motivated
•
How to stop letting other people’s reactions and opinions consume your energy
•
What you can try when someone you love resists your efforts to help
•
Ways to build a clearer picture of what you want your life to look like as you get older
I know firsthand how hard it can be to start again. During my recovery from back surgery, even the smallest movements took effort. Having something I wanted to get back to helped me keep going. Being able to play with my grandson gives me a reason to keep building strength today. Whatever your reason is, it deserves a place in the everyday decisions you make about your health.
Thank you to everyone who voted for The Dr. Hyman Show in this year’s Signal Awards. We won four awards, including two Listener’s Choice honors made possible by your votes. Your support means a great deal to me, and I look forward to bringing you more conversations that help you better understand your health and put what you learn into practice.

Normal Blood Sugar But Still Insulin Resistant? Here's Why
Show notes
Your doctor says your blood sugar is normal, so you assume everything is fine. But what if your body is already showing signs of insulin resistance and your routine blood tests aren't catching it? Today, I break down what your blood sugar numbers actually reveal, the critical markers most doctors aren't testing, and how to spot metabolic dysfunction before it develops into something more serious.
Here's what we discuss in today's episode:
• Why normal blood sugar doesn't necessarily mean you're metabolically healthy
• The overlooked blood test that may reveal insulin resistance years before your glucose rises
• What your fasting glucose, insulin, and A1c numbers actually mean and what to look for
• How sleep, stress, meal timing, and even the order you eat your food can affect blood sugar
• The surprising signs of insulin resistance, even in people who appear thin and healthy
• Simple changes you can make today to improve your metabolic healthInsulin resistance can develop silently for years before showing up on a standard blood test. The sooner you understand what's happening in your body, the sooner you can take action. And the good news is that many of the most powerful ways to improve your metabolic health start with simple, everyday habits.

The New Science of Brain Aging: What 200,000 scans reveal | Paul Thompson, PhD
Show notes
How well is your brain aging? Your birthday tells you one thing, but your brain may tell a different story.
Today, I’m talking with neuroscientist Paul Thompson, PhD, whose work with the global ENIGMA Consortium is revealing how brain health connects to what’s happening throughout your body. We get into what brain scans can tell us and why those findings matter to you.
We discuss:
•
What your “brain age” means and how it can differ from your actual age
•
Why your metabolic health deserves attention when you’re struggling with mood or memory
•
How sleep and nutrition support your brain’s ability to function and recover
•
What having an Alzheimer’s risk gene does, and doesn’t, tell you about your future
•
How brain scans, blood tests, and AI could help identify the right treatment for you
It’s so exciting to see researchers like Paul looking across thousands of brain scans and uncovering connections between the health of the body and the brain. For me, it opens up a bigger conversation about how we care for ourselves and how our everyday habits can help protect our memory and support our mood as we age.

How Do I Know If I Actually Need a Detox? The Signs Your Body Is Telling You
Show notes
What if the fatigue, brain fog, bloating, and cravings you've accepted as normal are actually signs that something you're eating isn't working for your body? You may not realize how much your food is affecting you until you change it. In this episode, I break down why I created the 10-Day Detox, what happens inside your body when you remove common dietary triggers, and how just 10 days can reveal important clues about your health.
Here's what we discuss in today's episode:
• Why you might feel tired, bloated, or foggy even when you think you're eating healthy
• The surprising changes that can happen inside your body in just 10 days
• Why the first few days of a dietary reset can be the hardest—and what happens next
• The common foods that may be quietly contributing to inflammation, cravings, and metabolic dysfunction
• What to eat during the 10-Day Detox and how to reintroduce foods afterward to identify your personal triggersThe goal isn't another restrictive diet or a quick fix for weight loss. It's to understand how food affects your body. When you start connecting what you eat with how you feel, you gain the information you need to make better decisions for your long-term health.

Why Younger Women Are Getting Breast Cancer at Record Rates (And How to Reduce Your Risk)
Show notes
A normal mammogram can bring a real sense of relief. But when it comes to understanding your breast cancer risk, what else should you know?
Today, I’m joined by OB/GYN and SHE MD podcast co-host Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi. Helping women get answers about their health has been central to her work for decades. Yet when she faced her own breast cancer diagnosis, she experienced the same dismissal so many of her patients had described.
You’ll learn:
•
How to understand your breast cancer risk, even without a family history
•
What to ask about your breast density and screening options
•
Why irregular cycles, acne, and weight changes may be connected
•
Why painful periods shouldn’t be something you simply learn to live with
•
How to approach hormone replacement therapy with your personal risks and needs in mind
Dr. Aliabadi made a point that really stayed with me. Understanding your health is part of advocating for yourself. You don’t need to have every answer. But knowing what to ask and having a doctor who listens to what you’re experiencing can help you make more informed decisions about your care.

Why Your Skin Isn’t Healing: The Gut, Hormone & Inflammation Connection
Show notes
Early in my career, I noticed that patients’ skin often improved as we addressed their nutrition and gut health. That changed how I approached skin concerns and taught me to look beneath the surface for contributing factors.
Today, I’m joined by triple board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mamina Turegano, co-author of The Holistic Psoriasis Management and Nutrition Guide and an advocate for Timeline’s approach to skin health. Together, we explore what your skin can reveal about your overall health and how that understanding can help you make more informed choices about caring for it.
You’ll learn:
•
How damaged mitochondria contribute to skin aging, and how urolithin A may support healthier skin through mitochondrial renewal
•
How your gut health, hormones, and insulin resistance may be contributing to recurring acne and other skin concerns
•
How menopause changes your skin, and what to consider if it becomes drier, thinner, or less resilient
•
How strength training may benefit your skin alongside your muscles
•
Which skincare basics to prioritize before investing in newer treatments and supplements
Like most people, I care about how my skin looks, but I also want to understand what helps it stay healthy and resilient. That’s how I approach aging more broadly: learning what my body needs and making those choices part of everyday life.

The Supplements, Foods, and Habits I Use to Stop a Cold Before It Starts
Show notes
Why do some people catch every cold going around while others rarely get sick? Your immune system isn’t something you simply “boost” with one supplement—it’s shaped every day by your sleep, diet, stress, gut health, nutrient status, and metabolic health. In this episode, I’m joined by one of my producers, Emma, to break down what actually helps you build a more resilient immune system before cold and flu season hits.
Here’s what we discuss in today’s episode:
• Why some people get sick constantly while others seem far more resilient
• What actually weakens your immune system long before symptoms show up
• What I personally do at the first sign of a cold or flu
• The most important habits and nutrients for supporting immune function through the winterYou don’t need a complicated immune protocol. The goal is to strengthen the systems that help your body respond well when you’re exposed—so you’re less fragile when cold and flu season arrives.

Nutrition Expert: This Is Why Eat Less, Exercise More Never Works
Show notes
Nutrition advice often reduces food to calories, nutrients, and a list of rules to follow. But the more we learn about how the body responds to different foods, the clearer it becomes that this way of thinking tells only part of the story.
Today, I’m joined by cardiologist and public health expert Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University and author of the new book Food Is Medicine. We explore what we still get wrong about food and what changes when we begin treating it more like medicine.
Here’s what we discuss:
•
Why eating less and exercising more may not lead to lasting weight loss, and what to focus on instead
•
How to choose foods that work with your appetite, metabolism, and microbiome rather than relying on calorie counting
•
What GLP-1 medications can teach all of us about hunger, cravings, and why weight isn’t simply about willpower
•
How much protein you actually need and why the source matters
•
What the science says about seed oils and which processed foods are worth avoiding
Over the years, I’ve learned to focus less on counting calories or chasing a single nutrient and more on the quality of the food itself. When you eat real, whole foods, the signals that regulate hunger and energy can begin to work with you instead of against you. Eating well should be less about following rules and more about understanding what helps your body function at its best.

Why Willpower Fails: The Psychology of Food, Cravings, and Weight
Show notes
You can know exactly how you want to eat and still find yourself reaching for something else when you’re stressed or exhausted. I’ve been there. Our relationship with food is influenced by far more than nutrition knowledge, and blaming ourselves for struggling doesn’t help us understand what’s actually happening.
Today, I’m joined by clinical psychologist Dr. Rachel Goldman, author of When Life Happens, to talk about the biology and psychology behind cravings, emotional eating, and food noise. We also explore how to care about nutrition without letting food rules take over your life.
Here’s what we get into:
•
Why you may reach for food when what you really need is rest, comfort, or a break
•
How to pause before an automatic food choice and figure out what’s driving it
•
How rigid food rules can turn one choice into a cycle of guilt and overeating
•
How GLP-1s can quiet food noise, and what they can’t change about your relationship with food
•
How to build other ways to cope when food has become your go-to response to stress
I know what it’s like to want the cookie even when I know it isn’t what I really need. Knowing better doesn’t make us immune to being human. My hope is that this conversation helps you meet those moments with more curiosity and less blame, so your relationship with food can become a source of nourishment rather than stress.

A Doctor's Honest Guide to The Grocery Store (What's Worth Worrying About)
Show notes
Trying to eat healthy has gotten surprisingly complicated. You pick up salmon and wonder about mercury, grab strawberries and think about pesticides, or drink from a plastic bottle and start worrying about microplastics. But not every food-safety risk deserves the same level of concern. In this episode, I break down what actually matters, what’s worth paying extra for, and the simple changes that can reduce your exposure without making you afraid of everything you eat. Here’s what I discuss in today’s episode:
• Which food-safety risks actually deserve your attention—and which ones may be creating more fear than necessary
• How to think about organic produce, pesticides, recalls, and foodborne outbreaks without avoiding healthy foods altogether
• What labels like grass-fed, organic, pasture-raised, wild-caught, and farm-raised really tell you—and what they don’t
• The hidden exposures that can come from packaged foods, plastics, cookware, and even common mistakes in your own kitchenFood safety isn’t about eliminating every possible risk. It’s about knowing which risks matter, understanding where small changes can make a meaningful difference, and having enough good information to separate a real concern from a scary headline.

• Explore the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen™ to help decide where buying organic may be most worthwhile: https://www.ewg.org

The Hidden Cause of Your Chronic Illness (It's Not What You Think) | Dr. Neil Nathan
Show notes
Chronic illness rarely fits neatly into a single diagnosis. Symptoms can span multiple systems, leaving people profoundly unwell even when standard testing appears normal. I understand this experience from the inside out because I’ve lived it myself.
Today, I sit down with Dr. Neil Nathan, a leading expert in complex chronic illness and author of Toxic, now in its second edition. We explore why these conditions are so often misunderstood and how identifying what is driving them can create a path toward recovery.
We discuss:
•
Why mold toxicity, Lyme disease, and long COVID can be so difficult to diagnose
•
How to identify the root cause instead of chasing downstream symptoms
•
What the Cell Danger Response is and why the body can remain stuck in survival mode
•
Why some people suddenly become sensitive to foods, chemicals, medications, light, and sound
•
Why the right treatment can make symptoms worse when introduced at the wrong time
I’ve been sick enough to know how quickly chronic illness can narrow your world—and how discouraging it is when no one can explain why. But I’m also living proof that the body can recover. The answer is not always more treatment. Often, it begins with finding the root cause, respecting what the body can tolerate, and addressing each layer in the right order.

5 Foods That Are Making Your Brain Fog Worse
Show notes
Brain fog isn’t just a normal part of getting older—and it may not be a brain problem at all. If you struggle to focus, lose your train of thought, forget why you walked into a room, or feel mentally exhausted after eating, your body may be trying to tell you something.
Here’s what I discuss in today’s episode:
• The five foods I most commonly see contributing to brain fog—and why some seemingly “healthy” choices may be working against you
• The surprising connection between your gut and your ability to think, focus, and remember
• Why certain foods can affect your brain even when you don’t have obvious digestive symptomsBrain fog is a messenger, not the root problem. When you start looking at what’s happening throughout your body—especially your gut, blood sugar, inflammation, and microbiome—you can begin uncovering what’s getting in the way of a clearer, healthier brain.

I've Had 6 Back Surgeries And Almost Died: Here's What 40 Years of Medicine Actually Taught Me
Show notes
This week, I’m the one answering the questions in a deeply personal conversation about my health journey. I speak openly about some of the hardest parts of that journey, the treatments I’ve tried, the beliefs I’ve reconsidered, and what a lifetime devoted to health has taught me about what matters most.
Here’s some of what I share:
•
How becoming the patient changed the way I practice medicine
•
How nearly dying changed what longevity means to me and what I believe a healthy life is actually for
•
Which wellness and longevity therapies I personally use, and how I decide what’s worth trying
•
Why the pursuit of optimal health can sometimes become unhealthy
•
What I’m still trying to understand about myself at this stage of my life
I’ve spent much of my life trying to understand how we can live longer and feel better. But nearly losing my own life reminded me that health isn’t the destination. It’s what allows us to be present for the people we love, remain curious, and experience our lives more fully. I hope this conversation encourages you to ask yourself what you want your health to make possible.

What We Got Wrong About the Gut Microbiome (And What's Actually Right)
Show notes
We hear a lot about improving gut health through food, probiotics, and supplements. But after more than a decade of major advances in microbiome research, the picture has become both more promising and more complex.
In this episode, I’m joined by gastroenterologist and neuroscientist Dr. Emeran Mayer, co-author of the new book The Mayer Model, to explore how our understanding of the gut-brain connection has evolved—and what we may still be getting wrong. We also look at what this growing field could mean for chronic disease and healthy aging.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
•
How your gut microbiome communicates with your brain, immune system, hormones, and metabolism
•
Why diet alone may not be enough to improve gut health—and how sleep, stress, exercise, relationships, and purpose also shape your microbiome
•
How modern diets and lifestyles have created a mismatch between our microbes and human biology
•
Why probiotics and microbiome testing may not provide the personalized answers many people expect
•
How fiber, polyphenols, fermented foods, and greater plant diversity help support a healthier, more resilient microbiome
The food we eat matters, but so do the ways we move, sleep, manage stress, and connect with others. Supporting gut health isn’t about finding one magic solution. It’s about creating a healthier, more resilient system over time.
Beginning September 1, Dr. Mayer’s team is offering my audience a collection of bonuses to accompany The Mayer Model. To learn more about the book and access the bonuses, click here.

ADHD Is a Whole-Body Problem: What to Look at Beyond the Brain
Show notes
ADHD is usually treated as a problem in the brain. But what if some of the factors making it harder to focus, regulate your mood, or manage your symptoms are actually coming from somewhere else in your body?
In this episode, I’m joined by one of my producers, Emma, to explore ADHD through a functional medicine lens. We look beyond the diagnosis to ask what may be happening “under the hood”—from the gut and microbiome to inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar, hormones, and the foods we eat. Because the brain doesn’t operate in isolation. What happens throughout the body can directly influence how it functions.
Here’s what we discuss in today’s episode:
• The surprising connection between your gut and your ability to focus—even if you have no digestive symptoms
• What I look for beyond the brain when someone comes to me with ADHD
• The everyday foods and nutrient deficiencies that may be quietly making ADHD symptoms worse
• Why two people with the same ADHD diagnosis may have completely different underlying drivers
• What caffeine, skipping breakfast, food dyes, sugar cravings, and menopause may mean for ADHD symptoms
• Where I would start if an adult came to me newly diagnosed with ADHDADHD may begin with symptoms in the brain, but that doesn’t mean the brain is the only place we should look. By understanding the connections between diet, gut health, inflammation, nutrients, hormones, and brain function, we can start asking a more useful question: What is making it harder for each person’s brain to function at its best?

How to Actually Calm an ADHD Nervous System (And Change Your Life)
Show notes
ADHD can go unnoticed for decades, especially in women who learn to compensate through perfectionism, overpreparing, and working under pressure. It often isn’t until the demands of work, motherhood, or another major life transition become too much that the underlying struggle comes into view.
In this episode, I sit down with ADHD counselor Jenna Free, author of The Simple Guide to ADHD Regulation, to explore what she calls the frantic-crash cycle. She explains how chronic fight-or-flight may intensify ADHD symptoms and why nervous system regulation can make other tools and strategies easier to use.
You’ll learn:
•
Why women and high achievers can compensate for ADHD for decades before their usual coping strategies stop working
•
How perfectionism, procrastination, and working under pressure can keep the frantic-crash cycle going
•
The physical signs of nervous system dysregulation, including shallow breathing, muscle tension, and rushing even when there’s no real urgency
•
Why calming your body is only the first step in creating lasting change
•
How you can move away from all-or-nothing behavior and build a more sustainable way of getting things done
A diagnosis can help you understand how your brain works, but it doesn’t have to define what’s possible. By learning to recognize and regulate survival mode, you can create the conditions for your brain to work at its best.
