1% Better in Midlife: Healthy Habits, Nutrition & Personal Growth For Midlife Moms
1% Better in Midlife is a podcast about healthy habits and personal growth for women over 40—especially moms who want to make everyday life a little easier and make room for themselves, too.
How do I stick with healthy habits when life gets busy? How do I follow through on goals instead of starting over? How can I make meal planning less overwhelming? And how do I figure out what I want for myself in midlife?
I’m Nikki Cheak, and these are the kinds of questions we talk about here.
From building routines and getting back into strength training to using AI tools for everyday tasks, raising teenagers, and making friends in midlife, we explore practical ways to work through what’s taking up space in your head.
Some conversations are about making dinner easier. Others are about finding time for a hobby, taking a real break, or finally doing the thing you keep putting off.
I share what I’m figuring out, what I’ve tried, what happened, and what I think is actually worth doing. There’s room for unfinished plans and changing your mind here.
You can love your life and still want to feel better in it. You don’t have to reinvent everything to make it 1% better.
Follow along for honest conversations, useful tools, and small changes you can try in your own life.

AI for Moms: How to Use ChatGPT to Actually Make Life Easier | Ep 52
Show notes
Everybody keeps saying ChatGPT and AI are going to save you hours. Nobody talks about what AI for moms actually looks like when you’re in your 40s with kids going in different directions and about a thousand things already on your plate.
The last thing you need is another tool that takes all weekend to figure out. The biggest opportunity I’ve found is much simpler. Use AI to spend less time figuring out the things you’re already doing.
In this episode, I walk through three ways I use ChatGPT in everyday life. We start with planning a week that fits your real schedule. Then we get into health goals, and why the plan is usually what needs fixing. Last is meal planning, which used to eat up my whole weekend.
I’m also talking about where AI isn’t the answer. Sometimes the setup takes longer than the task, and some decisions need your own judgment. I spent years in corporate teaching people new tools, and I still love trying them. Not every impressive tool saves you time, though, and I want to help you spot the difference.
What you’ll learn
• Why the hardest part of a task is often everything that comes before it
• Why another planner won’t fix a week that has too much in it
• How to get ChatGPT to tell you when you’re trying to fit 15 hours into 3
• The question to ask when you keep missing the same workout
• How to build a backup plan for the weeks that go sideways
• Why most meal plans fall apart in your actual family, and how I use AI for meal planning instead
• When AI is a waste of time, and what to keep private
• The easiest way to start if you’ve been curious but didn’t know where to beginChatGPT prompts for busy moms
Copy one, paste it into ChatGPT or Claude, and answer the questions it asks you.
Plan a realistic week
Help me create a realistic plan for this week. Ask me questions one at a time. First, ask about my work hours, existing commitments, and kids’ activities. Then ask what absolutely must happen this week and what I’d simply like to accomplish. Estimate how much time my priorities actually require, and tell me honestly if I’m trying to fit more into the week than I have time for. Help me choose what realistically fits, leave buffer time for things that come up, and suggest what can wait until next week. Don’t schedule every minute of my day.Make your health goal fit your real schedule
I’m working toward a personal health or fitness goal, but my current plan doesn’t fit my schedule. Ask me questions one at a time about my goal, the time I actually have, and what has caused me to miss planned activities. If I keep missing the same workout or activity, help me figure out what that’s telling me about the plan: the timing, the amount, or whether the goal needs to shift for now. Then help me create three versions: an ideal-week plan, a realistic busy-week plan, and a minimum plan for unusually demanding weeks. Keep the recommendations realistic and don’t assume I need to do more. If I mention pain, an injury, or a health condition, suggest I check with my doctor before changing my plan.Your next steps

What's for Dinner? Meal Planning When You're Tired of Deciding | Ep 51
Show notes
Tired of answering "what's for dinner?" every single night? If meal planning for your family keeps falling apart, this episode is for busy moms who are done winging dinner.
My worst dinner disaster isn't burning dinner. It's never making one. It's 6:45, nothing's figured out, and the frozen pizza comes out again. Everybody eats. Nobody is harmed. But there's still that little voice acting like the pizza is evidence you dropped the ball.
In this episode, I'm talking about why "what's for dinner" wears you out, and why it's not really about the food. It's dinner decision fatigue. Every day, breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner are all waiting to be invented again from scratch, and those decisions sit in your head while you work, drive, and juggle practice schedules. With the holidays coming, every party, school program, and cookie exchange adds more to that mental load.
I also share why the usual fixes (new healthy recipes, a big grocery list, a weekly meal plan someone else wrote) add more decisions instead of fewer, why Sunday meal planning keeps falling apart, and the personalized meal planning system I built for my own family.
What You'll Learn:
• Why running out of decisions, not cooking skills, is what sends you to the freezer on busy weeknights
• How the exact same frozen pizza can feel like a failure one night and a plan the next
• Why a generic meal plan doesn't work for real families (practice nights, picky eaters, the foods your kids won't eat)
• What happens when you try to "eat healthier" by adding more recipes and a longer grocery list
• Why Sunday meal planning with a blank page wears you out all over again
• Where the dinner guilt is really coming from (hint: it's not the pizza)
• How personalized family meal planning takes the deciding off your plateResources Mentioned:

How to Simplify Your Routine Without Lowering the Bar
Show notes
Your routine looks a lot less impressive than it used to. Same few breakfasts, fewer workout days, a tracker you stopped filling out. So are you making progress, or did you just lower the bar?
Honestly, that’s a fair question. And I’m not going to tell you everything you stopped doing was automatically the right thing to stop.
In the last episode, we talked about how to start when your to-do list is too long. This week is about what happens after you’ve made the plan and it turns into a lot to keep up with. More recipes, more prep, a tracker, a new workout plan, a morning routine that’s supposed to make it all happen before anybody else needs you. Taking care of yourself starts to come with homework. So we’re looking at what your simpler routine is actually producing, and whether you can let it count.
What You’ll Learn:
• The question to ask before you add one more thing to your plan
• Why a five-day workout plan you keep missing might add up to less than two sessions you actually show up for
• Why a boring routine (yes, the same few breakfasts on repeat) can make healthier choices easier
• The three places to look for progress before you decide you’re not doing enough
• How all the choosing, searching, and comparing before you even start eats your time, and which decisions you can make once
• How to tell whether you’re simplifying or avoiding, and when one skipped day starts turning into a pattern
• Why deciding to do more should come from what you keep noticing, not from frustrationResources Mentioned:

How to Start When Your To-Do List Is Too Long | Ep 49
Show notes
I have a list of things I keep saying I want to do. Get stronger, eat a little better, finish that project, figure out what I actually like wearing. And somewhere on there, stop being surprised that everyone needs dinner again.
If you have a list like that too, this episode is about picking one thing off it and finding a place to start that actually fits your life. Because "I need to get my life together" is a lot to put in the middle of the week.
Welcome to the very first episode of 1% Better in Midlife! If you've been listening to Real Food, Real Energy, Real Life, welcome back. You're in the right place.
I still care about nutrition and fitness, and we're going to talk about them a lot. But I kept noticing the same thing, including with a lot of my clients: women who want to feel better and struggle to stick with what they start. Sometimes the thing you picked doesn't fit your life, or you don't even like it, or the goal is just too big for everything you have going on right now.
So in this first episode, I'm sharing how "plan meals" turned into an entire project for me, and how you can pick one thing on your list and make the first step small enough that you'll actually do it.
What you'll learn:
• Why "I need to get my life together" is too big to start with, and the question to ask yourself instead
• What I ask when someone tells me they're not consistent with anything (hint: you probably brush your teeth)
• How meal planning turned into an hour-long project for me, and why winging it kept sending me back to the store
• How to tell if the version of the task you're picturing is the reason you keep putting it off
• Why you don't need to choose the thing on your list that sounds the most impressive
• What to do when sick parents, a crazy schedule, or just getting through the week leaves you with no room
• The one sentence to finish this week, and how to tell if your step is still too big
• The part most of us skip after we actually follow through
• What to do when something you tried didn't helpResources mentioned:

5 Healthy Eating Rules That Are Actually Wrong | Ep 48
Show notes
Five things about healthy eating I do not believe anymore.
One of them will make you rethink every snack in your pantry.
This one is different from my usual walk-through-a-framework episodes. After years of trying to make this work, both in my own house with three teenage boys and with the women I coach, five patterns kept showing up. Smart women who already know plenty about nutrition, stuck in exactly the same spot.
So here it is. Five things I have landed on, and the actual mechanism under each one. Blood sugar. Insulin response. Decision fatigue by 5pm. The part most healthy eating advice leaves out entirely.
In this episode:
- Why a "healthy" cookie can still wreck your afternoon, and what makes a plate hold
- The one rule about carbs that changes how your blood sugar responds to the identical food
- Why the scale is almost always the last thing to tell you something is working
- The afternoon craving, and what is actually happening in your body during it
- Why diets fail, and why it is not the diet
- The thing hiding underneath nearly every healthy eating problem, wearing a different costume each time
This episode is for you if you've searched:
- healthy eating myths
- why do diets fail
- why do I crave sugar in the afternoon
- blood sugar and cravings
- do healthy snacks actually work

Why Healthy Habits Fall Apart After Two Weeks | Ep 47
Show notes
You've started before. You've stopped. But here's what most busy moms get wrong about healthy habits and readiness: it never comes before you start. In this episode, we break the readiness trap that keeps women stuck longer than any hormone issue or schedule conflict. You'll discover why the plan wasn't built for YOUR life - and how shifting your mindset around "being ready" is the real game-changer for lasting nutrition and wellness changes.
In this episode:
- Why waiting to feel ready is the actual thing keeping you stuck
- The real cost of staying in the research phase
- Why every plan you started and stopped was a mismatch, not a failure
- How I went from reading a label in an aisle to building this, and what that has to do with your next step
- Why the plan gets built from the doing and not the other way around
- The EASY Plate: four letters covering protein, vegetables, carbs, and fat without turning dinner into math
- Why 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal is the fastest single shift you can make
- The difference between a plan and a framework, and why one breaks when life does not cooperate

Scale Not Moving? 5 Things That Matter for Midlife Moms | Ep 45
Show notes
The scale tells one story - but not the whole one. When estrogen shifts, your body stores fat differently and muscle drops fast if you're not protecting it. You could be losing muscle, gaining lean mass, and watching the number stay frozen. Here are the 5 things that prove you're winning, even when the scale doesn't move - and why your midlife nutrition strategy needs to measure them instead. In this episode:
- What the scale is actually measuring at 6:47am, and why it has no idea how hard you have worked
- Why two women at the same weight can have completely different bodies
- The muscle loss problem in midlife that most women never hear about until it is underway
- Why your clothes are a more honest tracker than any number
- The five signals that show change is happening before the scale catches up
- What my client noticed at twelve weeks that mattered more than the seven pounds
- The one Friday question that tells you whether this is actually taking rootThis episode is for you if you've searched:

Eating In Your Car Again? Here's What To Do | Ep 44
Show notes
You ate in your car again. And the voice in your head was not kind about it.
You left the house on caffeine and good intentions, it is somehow already 1pm, you are standing in a parking lot absolutely feral, and the drive-through is right there. So you go. Then you spend the afternoon feeling like you failed a test nobody told you about.
That voice is lying, and I am going to show you why.
Eating falls apart in summer because the invisible structure that was quietly running your nutrition all school year disappeared overnight. No predictable meals, cortisol all over the place, and by 1pm there is no mental bandwidth left to make a good decision with. That is a structure problem, not a character one.
Three shifts, and none of them require a Sunday you do not have.
In this episode:
- Why summer is structurally harder for eating well than any other stretch of the year
- What happens to cortisol and blood sugar when you skip breakfast and run errands until 1pm
- The five things to keep in the fridge so you can put together a real meal in minutes
- Why meal planning specifically fails in summer, and what to do instead
- Anchor meals, and how three of them can hold an entire week
- The one habit that prevents most drive-through moments before they happen
- What the reactive cycle actually costs you, beyond the food itselfThis episode is for you if you've searched:
- how to eat healthy on the go
- I eat in my car every day
- what to eat when there's no time to plan

What to Eat When You Have No Routine or Plan | Ep 43
Show notes
Summer blew up your schedule again. The gym is gone, meal prep is a memory, the kids are home, the fridge looks like it was stocked by someone who dislikes you, and you are three days into eating goldfish over the sink.
Same.
Here is the thing to hear before anything else: summer did not destroy your habits. It destroyed the scaffolding your habits were standing on. School drop-off was holding your morning together. Practice at 5 was deciding when dinner happened. Take those away and the habits do not have anything to hang on.
That is actually good news, because scaffolding is rebuildable and character is not.
Last summer I ran my kids to camp four times a day and made exactly one decision: summer was not taking my morning walk. That single anchor held three months together.
In this episode:
- Why losing the structure is different from losing the habit, and why that matters
- The one anchor habit that held my whole summer, and how to find yours
- The all-or-nothing gym problem, and what to do when a full workout is not happening
- Anchor meals, and why two or three is genuinely enough
- Why skipping breakfast makes midsection storage worse, not better
- The difference between a rigid schedule and a rhythm, and why one survives June
- How to stop hiding your habits from your family and build them in insteadThis episode is for you if you've searched:

In this episode:
- The afternoon crash, the 4pm mood shift, and the 3am wake-up, and why they are one story

- Why the "healthy" breakfast you are eating might be driving the midday fog
- Cortisol staying elevated all day, and why your brain is switched on when your body wants sleep

Eating Less and Still Gaining Weight? | Ep 41
Show notes
You are eating less than you ever have and the weight is still going the wrong way. That is not a math error and you are not doing it wrong. Less food is the thing making it worse.
When you restrict, your body reads it as a problem. Cortisol goes up. Storage goes up. You end up hungrier at 9pm than you were at any point during the day, and then the whole thing repeats tomorrow.
Your body needs steady food, not less food.
What I use with every client instead is one plate, four sections, no app and no weighing. It is the EASY Plate, and it takes about ten seconds to think through once you know it.
In this episode:
- Why cutting calories backfires after 40, and what cortisol has to do with it
- The 3pm crash, the 9pm craving, and the rage-hungry feeling between meals, all one story
- The EASY Plate: half vegetables, a palm of protein, a quarter carbs, a thumb of fat
- The naked carb rule, and why a carb eaten alone behaves nothing like the same carb paired
- How to get 25 to 35 grams of protein per meal without a scale
- What all of this looks like on a real Wednesday with a family to feedThis episode is for you if you've searched:
- why can't I lose weight no matter what I do

Why Healthy Eating Keeps Falling Apart | Ep 40
Show notes
My son called me Bad News Betty and honestly, he was not wrong. Here is the hard truth about why healthy eating keeps falling apart, and it has nothing to do with how badly you want it.
You started the week motivated. You did the prep. By Wednesday there was a 4pm practice, a 6pm game, an 8pm game, and the container of chicken you made on Sunday is still in the fridge.
That is not a discipline problem. Almost every plan you have tried was built for someone without carpools, teenagers, and a body that stopped responding the way it used to. When it did not stick, that is why.
The fix is smaller than you think, and less satisfying than a full overhaul. One thing, done repeatedly, beats a perfect plan every single time.
In this episode:
• Bad News Betty, and the story behind the name
• Why healthy eating keeps failing midlife moms, and why it is the plan and not you
• Overhauling everything at once, and why it is the fastest route to quitting
• Defaults, and why what you fall back on matters more than what you intend
