  1. Episode 103: Her Angel Babies Saved Her Life and Shaped Her Family: Arielle’s Story

    Show notes

Two pregnancy losses. A rare genetic condition. Open-heart surgery. IVF. And a journey to motherhood filled with heartbreak, difficult decisions, and hope.

In honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, Dani sits down with Arielle, a mom who has chosen to openly share her deeply personal story of loss, grief, and the journey to growing her family.

Through unimaginable heartbreak and challenges, Arielle and her husband faced decisions no parents ever expect to make. Today, she's a proud mom to her little boy and is expecting another baby boy in December!

In this emotional episode, we discuss:

    • Arielle's pregnancy losses and the difficult decisions she and her husband faced
    • Discovering a rare genetic condition and what it meant for future pregnancies
    • Undergoing open-heart surgery while hoping to become a mom
    • Choosing IVF and navigating genetic testing
    • Pregnancy after loss and the emotions of finally holding her baby
    • The beautiful tattoo honoring her two angel babies
    • How sharing her story has shaped her experience with grief and healing
    • Finding hope while continuing to honor the babies she lost

One of the most beautiful parts of Arielle's story is that becoming a mom and growing her family doesn't erase the love she has for her first two babies. Grief and joy can exist together. And there's no right or wrong way to grieve.

Whether you've experienced pregnancy loss, are navigating IVF, or are still hoping to grow your family, we hope Arielle's story reminds you that you're not alone. ❤️

  3. Episode 101: "I Don’t Even Recognize Him Anymore” - How a Pilot Lost 60+ lbs in a Year

    Show notes

“I don't even recognize him anymore.”

That's what Sam said looking at a photo of himself from just one year ago.

When Sam came to Pivot, he was 33 years old, just under 300 pounds, on three blood pressure medications, prediabetic, and had been trying to lose weight for more than 10 years. His biggest fear? “Failure to the point that quitting is easier.”

As a pilot, Sam travels frequently for work, eats on the road, loves going out to eat, enjoys beer, and considers himself and his wife foodies. He didn't need another restrictive diet. He needed to learn how to lose weight without giving up the life he actually enjoyed.

One year later, Sam is more than 60 pounds down and this time, he doesn't feel like he's just “visiting” a lower weight.

In this episode, Dani sits down with Sam and Pivot dietitian, Coach Samantha, to talk about what finally made this time different. They discuss navigating restaurants and work travel, breaking the all-or-nothing mentality, learning portion sizes, enjoying fun foods without guilt, and building the skills to maintain his results long-term.

Sam sums up his biggest lesson perfectly: “Everything has its place in the diet, but that place doesn't have to be every day.”

For all the men, dads, and grandpas who have spent years trying to figure it out on their own...it's okay to ask for help!

  6. Episode 98: From 3 Minutes to 3 Miles: Kristen's Inspiring 60-lb Transformation

    Show notes

One year ago, Kristen struggled just to walk from her car into work.

She needed help with everyday chores, constantly thought about food, and felt trapped in a cycle of guilt, binge eating, and starting over. Her doctor recommended a GLP-1 medication, but Kristen decided she wanted to invest in building lifelong habits and improving her relationship with food.

    Fast forward one year...

Kristen is down nearly 60 pounds, completed her first 5K, goes to the gym regularly, and says she has a running list of all the everyday things she can do now that she once took for granted.

In this emotional conversation, Kristen sits down with her dietitian, Sam, and Pivot founder Danielle to share what really changed over the last year. They discuss food noise, binge eating, mindset shifts, sustainable habits, and why this journey became about so much more than the number on the scale.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Kristen's life before coaching and the moment she knew she needed help
    • What food noise and binge eating felt like
    • The mindset shifts that changed her relationship with food
    • Why she chose Pivot over a GLP-1 medication
    • How she lost her first 40 pounds in less than six months
    • The non-scale victories that mattered more than weight loss
    • Advice for anyone who's waiting for the "perfect time" to start

If you don't recognize yourself or feel like you've been trying to lose weight "for as long as you can remember," this episode is for you.

  7. Episode 97: She Thought She Was Doing Everything Right…Arissa's Success Story

    Show notes

"I'm doing everything right... why isn't anything working?"

That's exactly how Arissa felt when she reached out.

In this client success story, Dani sits down with Arissa to discuss how one nutrition consult helped her get unstuck and transform her relationship with food. Just two months later, Arissa is down 10 pounds, feels stronger, has a healthier mindset around food, and even enjoyed her first vacation without gaining weight.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Arissa's experience with the Whole30 diet and why it wasn't sustainable
    • The simple habits that made the biggest difference
    • How food tracking became a learning tool instead of a punishment
    • The mindset shift that helped her stop making excuses and stay consistent
    • The donut story that perfectly captures what food freedom feels like
    • How she enjoyed pizza, ice cream, and piña coladas on vacation while staying on track

If you've been feeling stuck and wondering why your hard work isn't paying off, maybe it's time to get some answers. Sometimes it only takes one conversation with the right person to identify what's missing and help you start seeing results.

  8. Episode 96: Behind the Scenes: What Dietitians Actually Do on Vacation

    Show notes

Ever wonder what a dietitian's habits actually look like on vacation?

You might picture us ordering grilled chicken salads and drinking water all weekend.

Spoiler alert... that's not what happened.

In this episode, Pivot Dietitians Danielle and Sam give you a behind-the-scenes look at how dietitians eat, move, and make food decisions while away from home. No food rules, no calorie counting, and no "cheat days", just realistic habits that make healthy eating feel effortless, even on vacation.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    •

Simple ways to stay consistent while traveling

    •

How dietitians approach restaurants, snacks, and treats

    •

Common habits that make healthy eating feel effortless

    •

A surprising portion-size experiment that might change how you look at serving sizes

    •

The mindset shift that helps you enjoy vacations without guilt

    •

How to build habits that stick through every season of life

The biggest takeaway? You really can have your cake and eat it too. You can work toward your health and weight loss goals while still enjoying drinks, donuts, French fries, and vacations. Lasting results don't come from being perfect. They come from building habits that fit into real life, no matter the season. That's the difference between constantly starting over and creating a lifestyle you can actually maintain.

  9. Episode 95: We Tracked Our Food for a Week... and Even Dietitians Underestimate Their Calories

    Show notes

Think you're eating a certain amount of calories each day? You might be surprised.

In this episode, Pivot dietitians Danielle and Sarah share what happened when they tracked their food for over a week for the first time since becoming moms. From random bites while cooking to finishing toddler leftovers, they quickly realized those little things add up, especially when your focus is elsewhere.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Why awareness is the first step to change

    • The difference between what people think they eat and what they actually eat

    • How tracking improved Dani's relationship with food

    • Why tracking doesn't have to lead to restriction or obsession

    • Practical tips for tracking more accurately as a busy parent

If you've ever felt frustrated because you're putting in effort but not seeing results, this episode is for you. Our hope is that you'll walk away realizing that awareness isn't about judgment, it's about gathering information. When you understand your habits, you can stop guessing, stop starting over every Monday, and start making decisions based on facts instead of assumptions. Sometimes the most powerful changes come from simply paying attention.

  10. Episode 94: She Lost 33 Pounds…Then Stopped Trying to Lose Weight

    Show notes

In this episode, Danielle sits down with Pivot client Sarah to share one of the most refreshing weight loss success stories you’ll hear.

Sarah is a mom of two boys and former physique competitor who spent years trapped in all-or-nothing dieting, restrictive meal plans, binge/restrict cycles, and believing she always needed to push harder to be successful.

After losing 33 pounds through sustainable nutrition coaching, improving her relationship with food, and building a workout routine she genuinely enjoys, Sarah was preparing for another fat loss phase… until she realized something surprising:

She didn’t actually WANT to be dieting anymore.

Together, Danielle and Sarah talk about:

    • how bodybuilding impacted Sarah’s mindset around food and exercise
    • the emotional toll of restrictive dieting
    • binge eating, food obsession, and starting over every Monday
    • why sustainable weight loss feels different
    • learning to enjoy movement again
    • tracking breaks, flexibility, and food freedom
    • why maintenance is NOT failure
    • and the powerful realization that health should make your life bigger, not smaller

  11. Episode 93: We Ate 1200 Calories for a Day… That Was Long Enough

    Show notes

Someone once told me, ‘I’ve been eating 1200 calories for 2 years and I’m not losing weight!’”

That statement sparked this entire episode.

As dietitians, we hear this all the time—so Sam and I decided to put it to the test.

We each followed a fully planned, measured 1200-calorie day to see what it actually feels like—physically and mentally.

What we found wasn’t just hunger.

It was constant food thoughts, a scarcity mindset before the day even started, and already thinking about what to eat next before the day was even over.

In this episode, we break down:

    • Why 1200 calories is nearly impossible to hit consistently without strict planning
    • What it actually feels like to eat that little (physically + mentally)
    • How “food noise” increases when you’re under-eating
    • The “last supper” and “I earned this” mindset that leads to overeating
    • Why volume eating only goes so far
    • How this cycle keeps people stuck (restrict → overeat → repeat)

We also share exactly what we ate, how we felt throughout the day, and why eating as much as possible (while still in a deficit) is key for sustainable fat loss.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, frustrated, or like “nothing is working”… this episode will give you a whole new perspective.

  12. Episode 92: The Mental Load & Mom Guilt: How to Lighten the Load

    Show notes

Do you feel like you’re doing everything at home and still feeling guilty taking time for yourself?

In this episode, Danielle sits down with relationship identity coach Nicole Carney to talk about over-functioning, the mental load, and mom guilt — and how these patterns are keeping so many women stuck, exhausted, and overwhelmed.

    We dive into:

    • what the “mental load” actually is (and why it’s so exhausting)
    • why moms feel guilty taking time for themselves
    • how to start shifting that dynamic without nagging or creating conflict

We also talk about how to get your partner more involved in a way that actually feels supportive (not forced), and why taking care of yourself isn’t selfish… it’s necessary.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re carrying the load and have 100 tabs open in your brain, this episode is for you.

  13. Episode 91: From Food Fear to Food Freedom: When “Healthy Eating” Goes Too Far (A Mother-Daughter Story)

    Show notes

This episode is a really special one. I’m joined by a mom and daughter I’ve had the privilege of working with over the past year: Kristen and Brooklyn.

Brooklyn is a middle school athlete, and her story is one I know so many families are going to relate to.

One year ago, Kristen was working out listening to a podcast I was a guest on… and something just clicked. As she listened, she thought, “This is exactly what Brooklyn is going through… and maybe this is what she needs.”

At the time, Brooklyn was severely restricting. She was only eating “healthy” foods, counting calories, losing weight… and had lost her period.

As a mom, Kristen knew something was wrong, but didn’t know what to do.

In this episode, Kristen and Brooklyn share their full story — from how it started, to the early warning signs, to the turning points that changed everything.

    We talk about:
    • How “clean eating” can quietly turn into under-fueling
    • The pressure from social media and body image
    • What it actually feels like to have constant food noise
    • The fear of eating more and gaining weight
    • The moment Brooklyn got her period back (we all cried)
    • And what life looks like now — eating pizza, going out with friends, and feeling free around food again

This episode is for moms, athletes, and anyone who feels stuck in food rules or chasing the “perfect” body.

Because what looks healthy on the outside… isn’t always what’s going on inside.

And the goal isn’t just to eat more — it’s to feel free around food again.

  14. Episode 90: VBAC, Induction & C-Sections: An OB-GYN Q&A with Dr. Collette Lessard

    Show notes

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Collette Lessard, MD, FACOG, an obstetrician-gynecologist who is passionate about helping women understand their bodies and make informed decisions about their health.

Dr. Lessard believes every patient deserves the knowledge and understanding needed to confidently navigate pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Her approach is rooted in evidence-based medicine while treating every patient like she would her own family.

Together, we’re answering common questions women have about pregnancy and birth — and throughout the conversation I also share pieces of my own birth experiences, including having an unplanned C-section with my first baby and a VBAC with my second (over 9 lbs!)

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The pros and cons of VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean)
    • How VBAC success rates are calculated and what factors influence them
    • Whether induction lowers the chances of a successful VBAC
    • The pros and cons of a planned C-section
    • Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and risks with multiple pregnancies

Whether you're currently pregnant, planning to be, or simply curious about the realities of modern obstetric care, this episode is full of practical insight, reassurance, and evidence-based guidance.

🎧 Tune in for an honest and informative conversation about birth options, medical decision-making, and empowering women with the knowledge they deserve.

  15. Episode 89: I Went 100% Dairy-Free for 8 Days…Here’s What Actually Happened

    Show notes

When my 3 month-old was constantly spitting up, the most common advice I received was simple: “Try going dairy-free.”

Even though Remi showed no other signs of milk intolerance and my pediatrician said, “He’s just a happy spitter — it’ll pass,” I figured it would be a worthwhile experiment… especially as a dietitian.

So for 8 full days, I removed all dairy — no yogurt, no half & half in my coffee, no hidden ingredients. And for the sake of the experiment, my colleague Sam went dairy-free too.

In this episode, Sam and I break down what what going 100% dairy free was really like:

    • What was surprisingly easy — and what was not
    • The protein bar and dairy-free milk experiments (including some major fails)
    • The best recipe that unexpectedly came out of this experiment
    • How quickly hunger and food noise ramped up
    • Why certain “healthy swaps” didn’t actually satisfy
    • The unexpected impact on my weight
    • How dairy shows up in more family meals than I realized
    • And the bigger lesson this experiment revealed about restriction and sustainability

We also talk about where dairy actually functions as a super helpful protein tool, where it’s flexible (like cheese and pizza), and where it’s tied to routine and enjoyment — which honestly matters more than most people realize.

If you’ve ever tried cutting something out — whether it’s dairy, gluten, or anything else — and found yourself more hungry, more snacky, or just kind of annoyed… you’ll relate to this. We’re sharing what actually happened when I removed a major food group, from the hunger and food noise to the unexpected weight and digestion shifts — all while navigating postpartum life and breastfeeding.

Because sometimes the thing you try doesn’t fix what you thought it would — but it still teaches you something. And usually, even in the middle of something hard, there’s a silver lining.

  16. Episode 88: Breaking the Plateau: How Bri Finally Lost 25 lbs After Years of Being Stuck

    Show notes

In this lighthearted episode, I’m joined by my client Bri to share how shifting her mindset finally got her unstuck after years of not seeing results.

When Bri reached out in summer 2025, she was working a demanding job as a lawyer, training with a personal trainer three times per week for nearly two years, and feeling beyond frustrated. She was getting stronger in the gym, but her body composition wasn’t changing, and she felt stuck despite being in a calorie deficit most days of the week.

Over four months, Bri lost just over 20 pounds — even while attending concerts, weddings, enjoying margaritas, sushi, and Italian dinners nearly every weekend. After transitioning into a reverse diet and maintenance phase, she continued to lose weight, bringing her total to 25 pounds lost in six months — without burnout, restriction, or sacrificing her social life.

This is a real, honest, and fun conversation where Bri shares:
    • What finally clicked for her
    • The biggest factor behind her success
    • The lesson that stuck with her the most
    • Her favorite part about working with Pivot
    • The advice she’d give to anyone working out consistently but not seeing results

If you’ve ever felt stuck despite working hard in the gym and trying to “eat clean,” this episode is proof that fat loss doesn’t require suffering — it requires a smarter, more sustainable strategy.

  17. Episode 87: NEW (2026) Dietary Guidelines for Americans: Pros, Cons and Dietitian Thoughts

    Show notes

The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans are out and I genuinely can’t believe the food pyramid is back 👀

In this deep-dive episode, I’m joined by my fellow registered dietitians Sam and Hannah for an honest, real-life breakdown of the 2026 guidelines. We go page by page through the new 10-page document (link below), separating what actually changed from what just looks different, and what this all means for real people.

We talk visuals vs reality, protein targets, fiber gaps, dairy confusion, saturated fat messaging, gut health, grains, added sugars, alcohol guidelines, and the disconnect between what’s written and what the graphic is communicating.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • What the Dietary Guidelines are and why they matter
    • Food pyramid vs. MyPlate (and why visuals matter)
    • New protein recommendations
    • Animal vs. plant protein
    • Dairy: full-fat vs. low-fat debate
    • Gut health + fermented foods (and what’s missing)
    • Fruits & veggies: servings, frozen/canned options, and access
    • Healthy fats: omega-3s vs. saturated fat confusion
    • Grains, carbs, and why the pyramid sends mixed messages
    • Added sugar guidance vs. real-life eating
    • Alcohol recommendations (or lack thereof)
    • Conflicts of interest worth knowing about
    • Summary of pros & cons plus what we’re changing as RD's

    Bottom line:
We love the big-picture message: eat more whole foods, more fiber, less added sugar and less ultra-processed food—but execution matters. If guidelines are meant to guide the public, they need to be clear, realistic, affordable, and consistent.

  18. Episode 86: Building balanced meals: PCC vs PFF

    Show notes

In the But First, Pivot podcast, we talk a lot about PCC (Protein–Color–Carb) and PFF (Protein–Fiber–Fat) — two simple frameworks we use to teach clients and athletes how to build balanced, satisfying meals without tracking.

In this episode, Dani and Sam break down what these frameworks are, how they’re similar, how they’re different, and when to use each one. You’ll learn:

    • Why both PCC and PFF work
    • Which one is easiest to start with
    • Downfalls of PCC and PFF
    • How to level up from PCC to PFF
    • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner examples for each
    • How these concepts help with energy, fullness, cravings, and performance

  19. Episode 85: If I wanted to lose 8 lbs. by Christmas, I would...

    Show notes

We’ve got about 8 weeks until Christmas, which means losing 8 lbs or about one pound per week is totally realistic!

In this episode, fat loss dietitians Dani and Sam share exactly what they’d focus on if they wanted to lose 8 pounds by Christmas without cutting out pumpkin Reese's and Christmas cookies.

If your goal is to enjoy the holidays, feel good in your body, and still make progress, this episode gives you a simple roadmap to do it (if you're already doing these and they're not working for you, I hope you'll reach out!)

  20. Episode 84: VBAC Redemption: Rémi’s Birth Story

    Show notes

After a traumatic first birth with Chloé, I spent my entire second pregnancy hoping for a VBAC, but also being terrified of it. At 39 weeks and 3 days, I scheduled a backup C-section “just in case,” but prayed that baby Rémi would come early on his own.

In this episode, I walk you through the full story from the first contraction at 2:30 a.m. to delivering our big 9-pound boy at 12:15 p.m. the same day.

    You’ll hear:
✨ Why I wanted a VBAC (and how fear played into my decision)
✨ What those early contractions at home were like
✨ Me begging for an epidural upon admission
✨ How quickly things progressed once I got to the hospital
✨ The intense final moments - CODE PINK!!!
✨ A painful postpartum recovery (ice diapers, hemorrhoids, and all)

This episode is real, emotional, and a little wild (equal parts funny and TMI). So if you’re not up for talk about hemorrhoids and vaginas, maybe skip this one 😉
